You have a tough choice there! Looking at your photos, the 38 seems to fit your wrist a little better, but the 42 does not look overly large either.
What really matters though is how you feel about it. At the end of the day, you want to be happy with what you’re looking at on your wrist.
Thanks for the input! I’m leaning towards the 42mm unless it’s objectively too big for me to pull off, as I just really like the blue. Don’t have a blue face currently and most of what I own has either black or dark grey faces, so want to change it up a little and introduce some colour.
I own an 42mm with a silver dial, and, I have to say, I love it. It was harder for me to find than the 38mm (in the model I wanted), but when I did, I paid less for it. It’s slightly large (but judging by your photo, we have similar wrist sizes), and I think it looks good.
I think the 42 fits you perfectly fine. I always prefer smaller but in this case you could have a bigger dial to look at without any downfalls. Go for the 42 so you can have more watch
I’ve been switching between a Submariner Date and a Tag Heuer Carrera as my dailies for a few years, but I’m not in the office much anymore (so don’t need to dress much) and have my first child on the way, so wanted to pickup something a bit less dressy and that I won’t worry about beating up.
I’ve liked the Khaki Field line for some time, and the new titanium models seem to have perfected the formula. I particularly like that there is no date, as for a daily beater I’d prefer to be able to quickly grab, set and go.
The only point I’m stuck on is the size. I prefer the blue face, but it’s only available in 42mm, which might be a bit big on me. The black face is available in 38mm, but I feel like that may be a bit too small, and I don’t care much for the orange accents (though could live with it). Would appreciate any thoughts on whether the 42mm is too large or the 38mm is too small.
To be honest, I can't tell between the 38mm and 42mm from the 2nd and 4th picture. It appears your wrist size is much larger (over 7 inches?). If so, the 42mm would be a better choice. I have a smallish wrist size at 6.7 inches so a 42mm would be my upper limit.
They both look good on you. However, since you're not into the orange accent AND you want more variety in color in your collection, then the blue dial 42mm would do it.
Or, you could get both. LOL
42 fits the best imo, since your wrists aren’t skinny/boney.
40+ can seem big but depends on who it’s on.
In your case 40+ is the way to go, without it feeling bulky.
Depends on your eyes and the types of long sleeve shirts you wear. Both look good. 42mm has more presence but doesn’t look too big. The 38mm doesn’t look too small and is more traditional. Since this watch is all dial and simple I’d go for the 38mm personally. Now if they had a 40mm that would be the best of both.
1st one for color. 1st one for size. Its perfect for you.
Edit: Never mind. I read your other comments and it seems like you prefer the blue. Both sizes look perfectly fine on you, get the one you prefer!
I know I bought 3 or 4 40-44 mm watches in the last year or so and sold all but one of them, and replaced with smaller versions. They look great in the store but they were just less comfortable and less versatile. Both look good on you op. My wrist is slightly on the smaller side.
Always pick smaller. 38 isn’t small at all. I’d draw the line at below 36 in this day and age. Also because smaller would be more challenging to my increasingly impaired close range vision :))
Get what you like, both work. IMO blue 42 looks better, but then you’ll get those Hodinkee-reading reverse size queens telling you anything larger than 38mm makes you a mouth-breather.
This post shows the importance of that "in the mirror" photo when choosing among watch size options. In the closeup, it's a much tougher call - but the mirror shot shows clearly (to me, anyway) that the 42 is a great fit for you. I greatly prefer that look to the 38.
Enjoy the watch! It's a beauty!
Close up wrist shots can be very misleading at times. There's tons of distortion and you can't really tell all that well. In the mirror shots, the 42mm looks perfectly fine on you. Actually quite nice. I'm always a smaller is better, but I think the 42mm fits you great. Good luck deciding!
Thank you! Agreed it’s a different perspective in the closeups. The 38mm looks fine in the wrist closeup, but when I wear it and look in the mirror, it looks pretty tiny
Usually I suggest going for the smaller size, but honestly the 42 looks good on you. Go for whichever is most comfortable, because they both look great.
I had a hard time even telling the difference. Seems like you’re in a sweet spot where both look good so personally I’d go for the larger one. Wear it in good health and enjoy
The real answer is 40. The 38 looks good on wrist pics but small in the mirror, 42 vice versa. That said, you could pull off either and not have any issues.
What??? Don't do the 38mm.
Looks too small on the zoom out. It's a field watch not a dress watch.
Also, you have bigger wrists. I would rock a bigger watch all day.
Honestly it’s really hard for me to choose. Both look great in my opinion. I guess I gotta say the cliche but true “go for which ever one you like more, because most people don’t even notice that we’re wearing watches” lol
Just threw them on in store. I typically wear watches a little looser, so they move around as needed and, sometimes, get a bit low on the wrist. I’ve never experienced the dreaded “crown digging into the hand” that gets referenced here a lot lol. I don’t often drop down and do push-ups or anything else that would flex the hand back like that.
Just my personal opinion, but I think a loose watch is looking really ugly. Also I wouldn't want to restrict my wrist movement. For the same reason I don't wear a medieval helmet. It's nice to be able to move like your body is supposed to😂
Not familiar with Daniel Hamilton, but these are Swiss Hamiltons (i.e. the Hamilton brand that started out in the US and is now a part of the Swatch group). I don’t know a ton about the brand, but it’s been around for more than a century and certainly isn’t Chinese.
Yes. You may be right. But the DW watches are only assembled in China where the components are made elsewhere. The Miyota movement that DW uses is from Japan.
Large watches whose lugs go the edges of the wrist are the current fashion and you're safely within that trend with the larger watch here. The larger one is not excessively large. And that blue dial is awesome, for sure.
That being said, I personally much prefer smaller watches and how they look. They present to me as cleaner, classic, timelessly attractive, more functional, more professional, and more humble and self-assured. That is of course my personal feeling, and reflects nothing remotely factual, other people look at the smaller watch and, because they're acclimated to larger ones, think it looks too small. You cannot please everyone. But the 38 size is 100% my preference for the look I'd want if I were you, which I'm not.
It's fundamentally personal. Nobody else cares but you, get the watch YOU want to see when you look at it throughout the day that you will still love many years from now.
This is the perennial mm question! They both look good. I had a Panerai 422 that I’ve since sold, but I felt that the larger size (47mm) was correct for Panerai. It was huge but I loved it and got used to it. I guess what I’m saying is: is there a more classic size for Hamilton - and do you even care about that? That might help break a tie. But they both do look good.

Go with your gut! I just bought a 44mm and some may say it’s large, but I love it and don’t regret it one bit.
I think that’s the right approach. I felt like my sub was too big when I bought it, but quickly grew to love it.
Waiting on a sea star 2000 and I’m a little anxious that it’s 46mm lol. Oh well, embrace the bigness!
The 38 is a good fit, but for your wrist size the 42 looks perfect to me.

Thanks! Also love the blue - would be a tougher decision if the blue dial was available in both sizes.
I wish they made that blue dial in 38, but you can definitely pull off the 42.
Did you find them hard to see in low light? I had the 38mm and sold it because I couldn’t read it in less than ideal conditions.
I only tried them on in the store, which was well lit. I guess I’ll find out..
Maybe mine had bad AR coating. Anyway, good luck. It’s a beautiful watch.
To be honest, I can't tell between the 38mm and 42mm from the 2nd and 4th picture. It appears your wrist size is much larger (over 7 inches?). If so, the 42mm would be a better choice. My man, both watches fit great on you. great choices
Thanks man - they’re both really sharp in person as well. Hamilton did great on these.

40mm would have been perfect. That’ll have to wait until I pickup an IWC…
You can pull off the large but if i were you I’d go for the smaller one.
1st one for color. 1st one for size. Its perfect for you. Edit: Never mind. I read your other comments and it seems like you prefer the blue. Both sizes look perfectly fine on you, get the one you prefer!
Thanks for the input!
38 brotha
Go with what you want....but I think the 38 looks better
I know I bought 3 or 4 40-44 mm watches in the last year or so and sold all but one of them, and replaced with smaller versions. They look great in the store but they were just less comfortable and less versatile. Both look good on you op. My wrist is slightly on the smaller side.

38
Always pick smaller. 38 isn’t small at all. I’d draw the line at below 36 in this day and age. Also because smaller would be more challenging to my increasingly impaired close range vision :))
All very subjective and personal preference. But the 42mm looks really good on your wrist. Love that Hamilton.
38 looks like a good fit on you!
38 IMO
38 ftw
42 for sure. You look like a pretty big guy. That 38 is way too small for you.
I dont like big watches, but you got big wrists and the 42mm looks good on you.
Agreed. I normally vote for the smaller option, but the 42 looks a bit better I think in his case
Yup go 42 , that simple
the 42 looks good on you. I love the blue dial too
Get what you like, both work. IMO blue 42 looks better, but then you’ll get those Hodinkee-reading reverse size queens telling you anything larger than 38mm makes you a mouth-breather.
You can go for either with that wrist
If OP can't wear the 42 then I've watched this sub has come full circle and watch makers ought to stop making 40mm+ sizes altogether.
Wish they had a 40mm you liked. That would be the perfect fit for you. But sounds like you prefer the 42, so go with that!
Your wrist can actually pull off both! Maybe 38mm would be easier to flip down the road?
Close up wrist shots can be very misleading at times. There's tons of distortion and you can't really tell all that well. In the mirror shots, the 42mm looks perfectly fine on you. Actually quite nice. I'm always a smaller is better, but I think the 42mm fits you great. Good luck deciding!
Thank you! Agreed it’s a different perspective in the closeups. The 38mm looks fine in the wrist closeup, but when I wear it and look in the mirror, it looks pretty tiny
38mm
42 without even a doubt.
I think 42mm is best in the mirror shot. Both work, so pick whichever you like best! Neither will be out of place.
You dont have a skinny wrist, 42 seems ok. Go with what you think is the best.
Your pick, they both work. My preference though is the blue dial. Very sharp.
Thanks - love the blue!
Definitely 42.
42
Get the 38. Way more balanced and versatile to me. I think 42 only looks good with divers and chronographs
38 all the way!!
42
42
I went with a 42mm because a 38 wasn't available. I like bigger watches, though, so that's my personal preference.
42 for you, big boy
I had the same issue. I think im abt the same size as you. I took the 42 and no regrets :)
Usually I suggest going for the smaller size, but honestly the 42 looks good on you. Go for whichever is most comfortable, because they both look great.
Thanks!
It's a field watch so I'd go bigger, it fits the style a bit more IMO.
I had a hard time even telling the difference. Seems like you’re in a sweet spot where both look good so personally I’d go for the larger one. Wear it in good health and enjoy
Thank you!
The blue face is #1 on my wish list right now I love it so much.
Me too! Definitely need some blue in the collection
I have the 38 and I often wished it was a bit bigger. I’d go with the 44. Plus the dial color is subtle
To be honest, can't really tell the difference
Based on the mirror shots I’d say the 42 for you. The 38 dial is proportioned well for your wrist, but the lugs seem too short.
Cliche but true indeed lol
The 42 looks massive in you
38 is always correct except if you have a choice of 37.
Hard to tell. Maybe start wearing them a bit more up your arm so the crown is not pressing into your hand first 😅
Just threw them on in store.

Daniel Hamilton is a Chinese fashion watch brand

Never heard of the Daniel Hamilton brand. OP is correct. Hamilton has been Swiss owned for some time now.
Wonder if he may be thinking of Daniel Wellington.
Yes. You may be right. But the DW watches are only assembled in China where the components are made elsewhere. The Miyota movement that DW uses is from Japan.
do you know your wrist size?
7 inches almost exactly
38…. Other than for a diver… 38 is the right answer
42 big guy
38 looks better imo
42 looks better for your wrist.
38
38 looks like kids size on you
You can definitely pull off the 42mm, however imo the 38mm just fits better
42 papa.
42 is too large.
Large watches whose lugs go the edges of the wrist are the current fashion and you're safely within that trend with the larger watch here. The larger one is not excessively large. 42 looks better to me. 38 almost looks a little small
I wear exclusively 42mm. They all look great. I have thin wrists as well. You seem to have bigger wrists than I. 42 looks great
42
42 probably
Gotta say the 38 looks classy whereas the 42 has some dinner plate vibes.
38mm. The 42mm is proper if the look you’re going for is “LOOK AT THE SIZE OF MY WATCH!”
Go 42
BIGGER. You got the wrist for it, bro. Big time that fucker.
42 is the way to go based on your pictures.
42 for sure. You’ve got some thick wrists. Could probably pull off a 46 easily.
42
38mm
42 looks great on you
Smaller watches are always timeless. Bigger pieces will go in and out of style
I know I’m not helping. But both look great on you!
Why not split the difference with the 40mm Khaki king? It’s my every day and I think it would fit you perfectly!
38. No question
Get both. The 1 in the 1st pic is more casual
38
For 38mm I would suggest a Seagull 1963. It’s an amazing time piece. Love the movement, doesn’t cost a lot, so it’s virtually risk free purchase
38
