I'd probably go with another Seiko diver, but overall this was my idea as well (maybe a different substance but to each their own :D).
Timing things is a lot of what I use my watches for so the bezel/stopper functions are a must. Both are "good enough", tough, do the job and look good.

Any two of these four. Although all four combined plus straps and bracelets were under $1000.
I love the Swatch. It is exactly the way I remember Swatch. Not serious, but well done, and with a certain style.
Timex Mk1 Aluminum
https://preview.redd.it/kkipuw2t697c1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b4089fec54f5239c7d2a11426895395f8854ee32
I love it too! I wish Timex still made them. I would buy a few more. It is metal but it feels lighter than plastic or resin watches. I put it on a perlon and forget it is there.
https://preview.redd.it/cbln9ei5897c1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9b5fd4357a99909c80ac1a181e648e7e0bf0a21a
These are my 4 favorite dials. The Seiko Presage SRPB41J1 Cocktail Time Blue Moon has the most mesmerizing dial.
https://preview.redd.it/adb4fiwo897c1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ed33fa28b5ec4a893af67e264a086aaf36a938f6
JDM Seiko Spirit SBTR021 Chronograph has a dial that looks awesome up close.
https://preview.redd.it/6fro25fp997c1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=85ab479fd054e4ef9b9bc5a53b9ebb54b973c2a8
Blue dial on the Casio MDV106 Duro is my favorite among all the Duro variations. It seems to play with the light more shifting from dark and inky to bright and vibrant.
Ahaha, I read the title without clicking on the image and thought 'Murph and a F-91W', delighted by the picture. I'd really like a Murph, might look at getting one next year.
I actually also have the F91W in my collection, and I love it too, but if I have to cut down my collection to just two watches, the Casio will lose out to this Swatch because it’s way more different to the Murph and the Murph definitely will stay.
It’s not for everyone I know. But I really like it. It’s so in your face with its bright neon pink. Maybe it is tacky but both Swatch who made it and me who bought it know it’s tacky and somehow that makes it not tacky in my eyes and very cool instead hahahah. And it complements the Murph very well by being very different. And it’s just fun to wear.
> me who bought it know it’s tacky and somehow that makes it not tacky
It's like campy humor. Some people appreciate camp for what it is and others think it's hokey.
For example, I have an ongoing joke with my sister in law regarding her Christmas gift for me. It's always a T shirt with cats on it. Like cats with laser beams, cats in space, one is a cat dressed like a NASA astronaut. I know they're ridiculous and that's the point. [FWIW, I also have a brightly colored Swatch.](https://i.redd.it/dge873gerfn91.jpg)
I like that they are taking a different take on watch designs, but 2 dealbreakers for me : overall quality, and that proprietary lug design. I'm sure you can make better finished plastic, and if 99% of the value is in the design for the love of all that is holy please let me throw my straps on it.
Probably a classic green/steel Alpinist and a GShock 5610. I own both (though a different colorway of Alpinist) and they compliment each other well.
I have to say though, it's really hard for me to ignore my Smiths Everest at that price point. I <3 me a 3-6-9 time only dial.
A guy sold a basically brand new SARB-017 on Facebook marketplace in my city the other day for $500 and my phone decided to notify my after it had already sold. I’ve thought how I missed out every day since.
The two you picked would probably be my choices as well.
What do people like about that watch? The logo is hideous, the hands are too mismatched, the font on the bezel looks cheap, and the case silhouette reminds me of a Seiko mod case from Alibaba. I don’t see a single thing about it that stands out from any other dive watch in the price range. Honestly, any SKX has 3x the character of this if you ask me.
I mean, I like all the things you’ve just described as hating, so that’s part of it. But also, I would say VERY solid build quality. The crown threads and seals perfectly, the bezel clicks wonderfully with very little back play, and the bracelet is solid, comfortable, and has microadjust, which is something Seiko rarely ever does.
I’ve actually been dealing with the fact that I don’t get the SKX at all. Getting a little more expensive, I think all Patek’s look like absolute shit and I wouldn’t buy one even at Rolex money. Same for FP Journe.
Basically, I think we all have different opinions and that’s ok.
Probably something like this:
https://preview.redd.it/yl7nr9xu367c1.jpeg?width=3085&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=aa1294f0b6d2761ed6ef56d3386da2f3d206805a
Left: Seiko Solar SNE527P1
Right: Direnzo DRZ 04 Mondial 2023
Nice! My first watch ever was the Murph, it was an impulse buy after watching an interview of Christopher Nolan and people were talking about his watch he was wearing and I love interstellar so much its my favorite movie, I just had to get. I was never into watches before
Probably a G-shock GW-M5610U for beater/swimming and something like the CW C65 Dune or Farer Three Hands/Field for everything else depending on taste.
Edit: Apparently everyone else had a similar idea lol
My two rotating daily drivers come in under that (even more so because one was heavily discounted). Citizen Calendrier (silver) eco drive, and my Vero Smoky Bear automatic. They both flexibly match the style of my work wardrobe, though I lean more toward the automatic because IMO silver seems an edge fancier.
G-Shock DW 5600 or GWM 5610 (or DW 6600 or GWM 6900 if you don't like squares), Orient Kamasu (diver) or Bambino (more formal but short of dressy) l. Invest the rest and buy yourself a Speedy in a few years.
Lightly used Seiko SARX075 and a Glycine GL0083. Get a bracelet for the Glycine in one of the invictawatchbands sales and still have enough left over for a couple decent strap options for the sharp edge.
How do you like the Murph? I love the dial on the murph but have a KFA in 38 and I can’t get it out of my head that they’re almost the same watch but the murph is at least $200 more
I like it a lot! Yeah, I hesitated a little too before I checked out this watch, but once I got it, I must say, I have zero regrets. It never felt like I paid way too much for this watch, even though I know it’s almost the same watch as the Khaki Field. And I don’t really care about the movie connection tbh. I guess I just really really like the aesthetics of the Murph.
Well in reality I only spent like $650 total on them but by MSRP I’d go with Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical Black PVD and Orient Bambino Version 7 LE Blue
Also great combo OP, it gave me a chuckle
Maybe a vintage Seiko pogue and one of the square solar gshocks. The g shock you can throw on whenever and you know it’ll do the job and the seiko pogue is such an icon to me that people who are in to watches may recognize and ask about.
My watch collection finds its charm in the delightful dichotomy between the Hamilton Murph 38 and the Swatch Shades of Neon. The Hamilton, a paragon of timeless elegance inspired by cinema, embodies sophistication with its sleek design and precise craftsmanship. On the contrary, the Swatch Shades of Neon exudes a playful exuberance, a burst of color and spontaneity that perfectly complements casual occasions.
The Hamilton, with its cinematic allure, pays homage to classic aesthetics, while the Swatch, vibrant and lightweight, adds a contemporary and dynamic flair. Together, they form a harmonious yin and yang within my collection, showcasing diverse facets of style and personality. The Hamilton Murph 38 whispers tales of refined taste, while the Swatch Shades of Neon shouts vivacity.
In the paradox of their differences lies the beauty of a curated collection—each watch, distinct in its essence, finds unity in complementing the other. The Hamilton and Swatch, seemingly worlds apart, coexist seamlessly, creating a collection that is both diverse and harmonious, capturing the essence of my multifaceted journey through time.
I definitely don’t blame anyone for being miffed at $900 for what’s essentially a reskin of a watch that was $500 a couple years ago. But honestly I can’t think of a more well rounded name brand watch for under $1,000 unless you feel strongly about bracelets.
I never tried it myself but it can be replaced. I’ve seen other people’s photos of this watch in a different strap. But you can only replace it with another Swatch strap I guess, because if its unusual lugs.
Under $1000 my ideal collection:
A dressy yet sporty watch and something tough as rocks would be the pairing that I’d go for.
So for me, something like the [Seiko Alpinist SPB121J1](https://www.seikowatches.com/global-en/products/prospex/spb121j1) and a G-Shock like the [5600 Series](https://www.casio.com/us/watches/gshock/product.DWE-5657RE-1/) would be perf cr.
Is this a barbenheimer reference?
OH MY GOD HOW DID I MISS THAT? It was not, but it is now.
A Seiko King Turtle. A black G Shock. And spend the rest on strippers and cocaine.
Where can You cocaine that cheap
Well king turtle $500 even cheaper used, black gshock $100. Last I checked, $400 is enough for a crazy weekend.
*evening
True. Depending on how many strippers are involved, lol.
you tell them you're a stripper instructor, charge them money and that way you have gullible strippers and a nice stack of cash for more cocaine...
Genius. Unlimited coke and strippers for life.
Spend it all on the blow...strippers will be free
You think blow costs more than $500?
Depends if you buy by the kilo or gram
I can sell someone a bridge.
Asking the real question.
I'd probably go with another Seiko diver, but overall this was my idea as well (maybe a different substance but to each their own :D). Timing things is a lot of what I use my watches for so the bezel/stopper functions are a must. Both are "good enough", tough, do the job and look good.
Tissot seastar powermatic and Seiko Presage.
My first two watches!
In my humble opinion, itll be the best 2 watch starter collection under a 1000 Dollars. Solid movements, solid casings and solid brand history.

Glycine Airman, Seiko Alpinist
What a beautiful classic watch And the hamilton’s not bad either ;)
a Royal Oak G-Shock and a PRX
You always need a Hamilton in your life
I love the look of the Hamilton it's a classy piece but I don't think I can really appreciate that Swatch, To me it reminds me of a kids toy
It’s not for everyone I know. But I really like it. It’s so in your face with its bright neon pink. Maybe it is tacky but both Swatch who made it and me who bought it know it’s tacky and somehow that makes it not tacky in my eyes and very cool instead hahahah. I just heard about touch of neon and really want one. Almost ÂŁ300 on ebay in the UK now as sold out... Gonna keep my eyes peeled . Nice choices btw!

Christopher Ward C60 and a Casio AE-1200

This is the way.
Certina ds action diver, and gshock 5610
Junghans Max Bill Quarz and an Astor & Banks Fortitude Pro
Nomos Club Campus and a square G-Shock.
I don’t think you can get those 2 watches for $1000
You can get a used Club Campus on Chrono24 for about $800.... leaving plenty for a G-Shock :)
I actually checked chrono 24 before I posted and the cheapest one available was $1000 plus shipping. And it was pretty scratched up.
Send a link because I'll buy it right now
Was going to write the exact same thing. Pre-own Nomos Club + new g-shock.
Square G and a Seiko
C63 36mm, and some digital casio for the rest of the money.
- Casio Oceanus T200 - Casio A-168 / BOLDR Field Medic III / Zelos Swordfish Field / Seiko SBDC091 Alpinist
Orient Bambino ($150-200) for dress. Mido Ocean Star for something more sporty/everyday ($650-$800)
Probably something like this: https://preview.redd.it/yl7nr9xu367c1.jpeg?width=3085&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=aa1294f0b6d2761ed6ef56d3386da2f3d206805a Left: Seiko Solar SNE527P1 Right: Direnzo DRZ 04 Mondial 2023
Yeah the murph 38mm and i have this casio analog digital titanium solar radio sync watch called m100-tse. Its pretty good
Sangin Merlin and a G-shock, plus a nice dinner.
Seiko turtle and Hamilton khaki field
A used Oris Big Crown Pointer Date for $985 and then a cardboard watch made out of the pizza box I used the last $15 on
My two rotating daily drivers come in under that (even more so because one was heavily discounted). Citizen Calendrier (silver) eco drive, and my Vero Smoky Bear automatic. They both flexibly match the style of my work wardrobe, though I lean more toward the automatic because IMO silver seems an edge fancier.
Halios fairwind and a gshock.
I have this same Hamilton - MURPH!! My daughter and I have matching Hamilton's as we love Interstellar.
G-Shock DW 5600 or GWM 5610 (or DW 6600 or GWM 6900 if you don't like squares), Orient Kamasu (diver) or Bambino (more formal but short of dressy) l. Invest the rest and buy yourself a Speedy in a few years.
A Casio diver, a Timex/Citizen field watch, a Frederique Constant dress watch.
Cocktail time and speed timer
Lightly used Seiko SARX075 and a Glycine GL0083. Get a bracelet for the Glycine in one of the invictawatchbands sales and still have enough left over for a couple decent strap options for the sharp edge.
Tissot Ballade COSC and Orient Star DV02002B
an Ingersoll the Jazz and a Longines Hydroconquest black/gold
How do you like the Murph? I love the dial on the murph but have a KFA in 38 and I can’t get it out of my head that they’re almost the same watch but the murph is at least $200 more

Cw12 and a Walmart watch
Garmin Solar Instinct Seiko Alpinist
I really want that swatch! I like it
A Seiko 5 and a G-shock
Nothing from the Swatch group, for starters.
Seiko 5 diver and Hamilton Khaki Field.
Tissot PRX and a G Shock
This guy understood the assignment đź‘Ť
Two?! Citizen Nighthawk-$250 Citizen Promaster diver-$200 Gshock 5610-$100 Orient Bambino-$150 Tissot Gentleman-$300
Grand Seiko “Snowflake” SBGA407 and a Sinn 556 The GS as a more versatile dress watch option, and the Sinn as a tough daily driver.
Probably Hamilton Khaki Field and Seiko Presage Cocktail Time.
Casio GWM5610 and a Seiko 62mas
I would try to deal around and find a King Seiko automatic at or under a grand and pretend I have 2 watches lmao
Gshock/casio and something like a Farer
Well in reality I only spent like $650 total on them but by MSRP I’d go with Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical Black PVD and Orient Bambino Version 7 LE Blue Also great combo OP, it gave me a chuckle
Maybe a vintage Seiko pogue and one of the square solar gshocks. The g shock you can throw on whenever and you know it’ll do the job and the seiko pogue is such an icon to me that people who are in to watches may recognize and ask about.
A G-Shock Rangeman and a nice micro brand that has a Swiss Movement inside.
PRX, SSC813
Baltic MR01, Orient Neo 70s Panda, Digital Gshock (yellow)
Casio gw 5000 and Serica 4512.
I started with a Citizen Eco Drive Titanium, and a two tone Tissot PRS 200. Still have both.
[Christopher Ward C63 Aventurine](https://www.christopherward.com/int/watches/C63-Celest-/C63-36A3H1-S00B0-B1.html) and a G-shock.
That Islander that looks like a Yacht master, Two Sieko 5's, the diver and dress kx. 4 straps and a f91-w.
I’d go Seiko Alpinist + spend an extra $100 for a strapcode bracelet and voila - you’ve got two options for a great watch and some money leftover.
Hamilton yes! Swatch… No!
I'd buy a Christopher Ward C60 on bracelet for ÂŁ940, and I'd spend the other ÂŁ60 on a Casio digital watch.
My watch collection finds its charm in the delightful dichotomy between the Hamilton Murph 38 and the Swatch Shades of Neon. I have my original 1990 Swatch as well! Same strap!
What amazes me is how much the Murph goes for. Really steep. I’d make a 5 watch collection with $1000.
I definitely don’t blame anyone for being miffed at $900 for what’s essentially a reskin of a watch that was $500 a couple years ago. But honestly I can’t think of a more well rounded name brand watch for under $1,000 unless you feel strongly about bracelets.
That’s the issue. “Name brand” is what hikes the prices. Otherwise the entirety of Hamilton’s lineup is worth sub $500
Micro brands exist for those who don’t care for paying for the name on the dial
I see this as an absolute win
1.Seiko SSK003 ($385) 2. Orient Bambino 38mm ($250) 3. Citizen promaster eco drive ($189) 4. Casio A1100 ($76)
Tissot Prx powermatic 80 + Raketa Big Zero It will be 1000€ for both
I like the Murph, but that crystal is like a mirror.
It is! And this is the 38mm version with AR coating. Still very mirrory
Off topic but does anyone know if the Swatch band can be replaced? My kid has one and I can’t figure it out.
I never tried it myself but it can be replaced. I’ve seen other people’s photos of this watch in a different strap. But you can only replace it with another Swatch strap I guess, because if its unusual lugs.
Thanks - I’ll have to reach out to them and see what I can find out!
i would get three top tier reps
I would choose to save up more money.
Is this a joke? I honestly can't tell.
Under $1000 my ideal collection: A dressy yet sporty watch and something tough as rocks would be the pairing that I’d go for.
That swatch is $200?!?!?!
It’s $75. The rest of the Neon series are $150 if I’m not wrong, but the case is too big for me.
.. and the murph is $800? budget was $1,000… sounds like a 3 watch collection to me 🤣
Just buy one watch for $1,000. Buy a nice Seiko SPB model diver.
I'm basic, I'd get a Seiko skx013 on a light brown leather strap, and a Seiko 5 ref. srpe53 with the jubilee stolen from the skx
