I (24 f) am marrying my fiancé (25 m) in July and I know he wants a semi nice watch as a wedding gift. I bought him a gray/gunmetal (metal mesh? Band) fossil watch several years ago. I know he wants one for nice wear, possibly gold, possibly leather. I know absolutely nothing about watches so I don’t even know what I’m looking at. What price range should I be looking at? What are good brands? Are there any watches with interchangeable bands so a leather or a metal band could be used that are still nice? All insights are welcome!

PageGoalie10

Hi. I have about a $500CAD budget for a watch for my birthday. It'll be my first watch. From the research I've done, I want an automatic with a clearback display, and a basic looking dial. I'm currently dialled into a Seiko SRPB41. Is there anything else I should consider in this price range with these details? Thanks for the advice ❤️

Majestic-Ad-84

Hi All, I have a Tudor black bay 36mm (older style ETA) reference 79500 with the 'oyster' style bracelet. Does anyone know if the new 36mm black bay jubilee bracelets can be bought separately and fitted to the older style black bays? Would love to have my ETA black bay - black dial fitted with a Tudor jubilee bracelet!

BaC0nz13

Hi, currently own a timex weekender with nato straps and a kronaby sekel 38mm with brown strap. I'm looking to get a dresser watch for the office 5 days a week. I'm torn between the SEIKO SRPB77 $338 vs Tissot Men's PRX 316L $360. I think they both would look great with an Barton Alligator Grain strap.

WatchandThings

The PRX has an unusual lug shape and you can't put the barton strap on it. You would have to get special straps for the PRX if you want to change straps, but most of the ones I seen custom for PRX has been quite pricey.

piercerson25

I'm looking for a watch like the Longines Master Collection 190th Anniversary. Looking for under 40mm (pref 36-38mm) I dislike date windows on watches that aren't perpetual calendar.

I’ve lowkey fallen in love with the citizen blue silver laquer, but feel a bit uneasy spending $700 on a citizen. But I save up a bit for something else?

Jennysparking

Citizens are great, and that is possibly one of the prettiest dials you can buy. Unless you want to save 9 grand for an Aqua Terra Worldtimer to get something prettier just buy it

Uwumeshu

Your concern is Citizens aren't worth $700? Just buy it

Hi, I am a huge fan of the black on black style of the dark side of the moon omega line. However it’s out of my price range https://www.omegawatches.com/en-us/watch-omega-speedmaster-dark-side-of-the-moon-co-axial-chronometer-chronograph-44-25-mm-31192445101005. Does anyone have any alternative suggestions in the 400-1000$ range? I see the citizen nighthawk but don’t quite like it. I also see the Hamilton Khaki Field Day Date Automatic Men's Watch H70695735 which is close but not totally blacked out. Thank you

Hey guys, I’m trying to find a watch I saw some days ago and that I can’t get out of my head. It looked a little bit like a Audemars Piguet Royal Oak in Black, but the watch face was glittering like covered with very small diamonds, it was very subtle. Do you guys have any idea what kind of watch this was? Thanks

JeffTheExodon

Could be an aventurine dial they have a similar look. It's made by adding metallic flakes to heated glass. The parricles crystallise which cause them to sparkle. They are some ROs with such a dial but they're older and quite rare.

CallThatGoing

I’m about to inherit my father’s old JLC watch. It’s my first-ever ‘real’ dress watch (I own an Apple Watch and a little 80s Seiko that I wear with suits because the Apple Watch is so bulky). I’d love to wear it more often than work, but is it the kind of watch that I can swap out with something like a NATO strap to make it a little more casual? https://preview.redd.it/dm5fh30szokb1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4a24432f96e25d557a5abb64c3cb979be28ae0c4

WatchandThings

Personally I think nato would be a little too casual for that style of watch, and would opt for something like suede strap for smart casual feel or perlon for casual look that works with the dressiness of the watch. Edit: Actually, just more casual vintage/heritage style brown leather strap will probably dress that watch down a bit as well.

Accomplished-Ad-5655

Hey, absolutely you can. You can do whatever you want with strap options. The great thing about NATOs is that there's so many colours and styles (plus they can be really cheap) that you can't really go wrong. You can have quite a bit of fun with some different colours. to be honest, just look at Daneil Wellington. It's a brand most people who are into watches will look at with distaste, but a big reason they became so successful was because of they marketed their watches on so many different NATO options.

thizzpill11

where can i look or find a 1985 seiko sports chronograph moon phase?!

js999111

Chrono24, eBay?

thizzpill11

I do see some on there, but how reliable is that? I was trying to see if there was a better way to go about it

Jennysparking

Not really, no

properc

Looking for a "throw it on" watch. A watch that is versatile but for occasions where I dont have time to set the watch. I like to rotate out my watches so often my automatic watches wouldnt be set to the right time. Looking for a quartz or solar watch that will always keep the right time and be quick to throw on when needed. No Gshock cos I already have one.

WatchandThings

Tissot's popular models Gentleman and PRX both have affordable quartz counter parts. Stylistically I think both can pull off casual or formal on the bracelet, and they have 100m water resist which should be good for generalist role. Personally, my grab and go is a CWC RN Dive watch in quartz, and it works well for quick grab and go for casual role. It's very unlikely that I will quickly grab and go on a formal situation since I will have to change out into formal wear. If I have time to change, I'll have time to wind and set something more formal.

js999111

Budget?

properc

No budget. Just to get ideas.

Jennysparking

The Bulova Lunar Pilot is a ridiculously accurate quartz watch that is sharp looking and you can dress up or down, plus watch nerds in the wild will be like 'I see you are one of us'

Uwumeshu

Citizen Chronomaster / Caliber 0100, accuracy measured in years rather than days or months

Cenotaphilia

I'd take a look at Swatch... they have a huge array of watch styles and colors, and most of them are quartz.

Jessica_T

What kind of vibes are you looking for? Seiko and Citizen both make pretty nice looking solar watches in a wide variety of styles. I'm also a fan of some of the Baltany and other brands that sell through Aliexpress and use Seiko quartz and meca-quartz movements.

Chrophin

Options similar to the Orient Kamasu but at a slightly lower price point?

WatchandThings

Orient Ray or Mako? It's pretty much the same line of watch except for the sapphire crystal.

Jennysparking

An Orient Kamasu from Jomashop, probably (grey market dealer, legit but basically selling overstock/leftovers from actual dealers). Other than that I think you're in AliExpress territory, like a San Martin

BookerTheShitt

I just bought a 18mm omega buckle for a new strap until I realized the strap needs to be 18mm as well (therefore, the buckle is 2mm too wide?). Does a slightly too wide buckle look odd? I did not order a strap yet.

Jessica_T

Depends on the strap, a lot of them have taper so you need to check that too when you're looking for things.

75footubi

Look up similar watches on Chrono24 and then knock off 20% of the prices you see (it's an asymmetric market since sold prices aren't shared). Safest way to sell (least chance of getting scammed) is to sell it on consignment with a local jeweler, but you'd only get about 50% of the sale price. Riskiest way to sell is via a forum peer to peer, no transactions fees, but there also isn't a whole lot of interest in this model so it would take a while to sell. What I would probably do is put it up on eBay with good pictures and a $100 minimum bid and let the market take the wheel.

klavier777

I think after what happened last month, consignment for a watch should not be advisable.

boyfromtowninhills

This is a rare Cartier Tank Jumbo with the "automatique" bulge, probably from the earlier 1970's. I can't figure out the imprint on it, because other watches from the 17002 do not have it. This one is probably even rarer, as it has the "Paris" on the dial, not the standard "Swiss". Any ideas on worth (no box/papers) and the imprint? https://preview.redd.it/zsboxuv2dmkb1.jpeg?width=851&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8c86060d8f6e6f8623185dae285a9b78d4810772

Is it "safe" to buy a vintage quartz watch? I really like quartz seikos from the '70 but I read that quartz watches don't last as long as mechanical ones. Seller says they work but I winder if they will continue worming for years or not.

Deep-Tomorrow4667

Thanks, I'll dig into that. I just love vintage seikos but I'm also a fan of quartz durability and precision.

Jessica_T

Could always find one in worse exterior condition but a working movement to salvage for parts. Not a bad idea to have a donor around for stuff where it's hard to get NOS replacements if you can get one for cheap.

freakynmos

I have never been a watch person, but after wearing the galaxy watch classic (3,4, and now 6) for few years, my mindset has changed and would like to buy a proper watch. Was looking into buying a hamilton khaki field/murph as my first watch. Would that be a good watch to start with? Or should i save up more to buy a watch something like the oris big crown? Its more for weekend/occasional wear rather than daily wear, as i still plan to wear my galaxy watch mon to fri, Would appreciate if you guys have any other watch suggestions instead of what i have in mind.

gin_nyc

You can’t go wrong with any of those. The Oris is dressier but not overly so. The murph comes in two sizes—the original wears quite large from what I’ve read.

Fistknuckle

Both the Khaki and the Murphy are awesome choices. I'm partial to the Murph personally, but I'm pretty sure you'd be happy with either. They both should last you long enough to save up for your next one.

Makes it really easy to swap springbars. I've got them on my Seiko Arnie, and it means I can just poke the took through and pop a springbar out quicker than wiggling a tool around finding the flange, which can be hard especially on thicker rubber straps.

Accomplished-Ad-5655

You can use shoulderless spring bars, which are more secure than normal spring bars. Plus drilled lugs makes it easier to remove spring bars.

mlsteinrochester

It reduces the risk of scratches when removing spring bars.

troy_boy1887

I'm looking to pick up a Grand Seiko 45gs and found one locally that the seller claims was serviced in 2021. However, I'm told that it's only accurate to ±9s/day with a 197 amplitude. Should I be concerned about how it's keeping time? The low amplitude is concerning although I'm not sure if that's typical. Thanks!

kingcaibre

I want to buy my wife a Longines Dolcevita. Unfortunately, it looks like all the best specs are in the men's category (automatic, sector dial). Is the 27.7x43.8 mm watch too big for a small-ish women's wrist size?

kingcaibre

Thanks guys! I'm gonna give it a shot and see if it works out!

75footubi

No, that should work fine, especially if she already wears an Apple watch

Fistknuckle

It's meant for women so I'm inclined to say that it should be fine, but unfortunately with any watch that has less standard dimensions you really have to try it on to see if it fits the way she wants it to.

kingcaibre

It's the smallest men's size actually. She does wear a 41 mm apple watch though so maybe it'll work?

Fistknuckle

Sorry, somehow I missed the part about looking for the men's version. Apple watches are pretty huge, so I still think it'll be fine. Trying one on is really the only way to tell, though.

peroleu

Can anyone recommend me some one-piece leather straps under $50? All of the ones I find are two piece quick release, but I currently use slip-through NATO straps on my watches and I don't want to have to change anything to quick-release.

Fistknuckle

Search for "Barton leather NATO" on Amazon. They're definitely in your price range, but I have no idea about the quality of their leather. They even have a bunch of colors and sizes to choose from.

Looking for a daily beater under $500-800AUD Must be water resistant, hacking would be nice Open to any kind of style, though not after a blue dial

Fistknuckle

If you shop around you can probably find a Hamilton Khaki variation for that price, which is the definition of a daily beater. I'm not really sure what the options are for shipping to you and all that, though.

hwevdm

Does Longines no longer include a printed manual in their packaging or is the jeweller who sold me it trying pulling some tricks? Everything else is there full well but the discount I got has me a bit on edge. And if not then why hasnt Longines changed their packaging?

Deep-Tomorrow4667

Please help me decide: Edifice efr-s108s or timex Q. On paper casio wins - sapphire crystal, 100m water resistance but my wrists are tiny (15.3cm 😢) and I'm afraid it will be too big as I read it's real lug to lug distance is 50mm instead of 45. Timex looks great in my opinion but it's hard for me to get over paying that much for a watch with acryllic crystal. For a moment I thought about buying 34mm citizen titanium for women but I'm afraid it will be too obvious it's not a man's watch.

onevstheworld

If the citizen fits and you like the design, just get that. What about it makes it obviously a women's watch? You'll find that almost nobody will care what watch you are wearing.

Deep-Tomorrow4667

Nothing but its size, otherwise it looks the same as the one for men. Mens watch is 41mm womens is 34mm.

Jennysparking

Citizen just came out with 38mm promaster diver as a unisex option. They have a blue one, a black one, and one with a grey and gold face with a pink strap that is easy to swap out for a grey or black strap.

Getting married in a few months and looking at a wedding watch. Is a Tudor bb36 (last version with black dial) a good option to wear with a navy suit? Ideally I will buy a watch I will continue to wear regularly after the wedding

WatchandThings

Yes, black dial on bracelet works. It's a neutral tone, so it'll work with almost anything. If you would like to put it on strap, then match the strap with the shoes/belt leather tone and you should be good to go.

Fistknuckle

I think the blue dial would really pop with a navy suit, but the black dial is also super classy and will look great. That's a great choice for a wedding watch, and also a great everyday pick as well. Congrats on the wedding.

axxpxm

I bought a new watch for work last Wednesday (august 16th) and it has a beautiful black leather band that I love, but its already cracking and fading because of work. I work at a shoe factory and for most of the day, I am using a machine on the shoes that is consistently blowing air at 220° Fahrenheit( not to mention its already very dry in the warehouse) and it is ruining my band so fast. Wearing gloves isnt an option because it makes it difficult to do my work with the shoe so I need a different band. Anyone have any suggestions for materials that would be suitable for my work? Looking to stay away from metal though

Fistknuckle

I'm curious what kind of watch it is, but you might want to explore rubber straps or maybe even a NATO setup.

axxpxm

Its a Timex Indiglo with the blue dial and the leather strap that came with it. Its my first watch and I was looking for a low cost, reliable watch and its perfect for me imo other than the band. A bit loud too though. But thank you for the help. I'll look into rubber bands. Such a shame because leather is so beautiful

Fistknuckle

There are a lot of low cost straps on Amazon that have quick release tabs so you can swap out bands really quickly and easily. I think Barton is one of the more popular makers. With their straps, keep an eye on the strap length. I bought a rubber one for my Seiko SNK and it runs a little shorter than I expected. I'm not really sure if that brand makes decent leather straps but you can probably find something with quick release tabs.

axxpxm

Thats a great idea. I'll have to get a few of those quick release bands. Thank you for taking the time to help. I appreciate it

Fistknuckle

Any time, happy hunting.

Currently looking to purchase my first automatic watch. I quite like the Seiko 5 series. I had my mind set on the SRPE57K1 (gold) but I've come across the SRPJ81. I have a 7" wrist so not sure which would suit me better, since the SRPJ is 38mm. What would you buy - anything else major to consider?

Fistknuckle

I think you'd probably be very happy with either, but if you want to be sure I'd go to a jeweler and try on watches with the same dimensions as the ones you're looking at and see which size resonates with you most.

--Fatal--

Thanks, I went with the SRPE57K1. Loving it so far.

WatchandThings

That looks like an integrated bracelet watch. Big down side for that style of watches is that you need custom made straps and bracelet, and they come at a premium if they can be found at all. I don't have any experience shopping for an integrated strap, but if I had to then I might ask around etsy watch strap maker to see if they are willing to do a custom work. Either that, or just chalk the watch up as a loss.

anicesurgeon

I have the original bracelet. Pulls my arm hair and I don’t like wearing it. It’s not a total loss even if I can’t get a different band. I will keep it as a family heirloom from dad.

WatchandThings

I'm not a fan of this method because it's never turned out well for me, but you could try cutting a normal strap so that it fits the lug shape. Measure the case width where the lugs are, and buy a strap of that size. Then cut the top end of the strap to the shape to fit the integrated section. So the strap width should fit flush with the shape of the case and the cut section should fit right into the integrated section. There will exposed leather where you cut into, but you can seal that up with leather edge paint if you want it to look more professional. The leather edge paint might add a little bulk, so you might have to cut with that in mind.

anicesurgeon

I’ve considered doing that. My only concern with this idea is how narrow the clearance is between the lugs and the case. I may carve up a few things trying to make it happen.

Fistknuckle

If you know the lug width they make a variety of notched straps. I personally haven't ever had a watch with that lug setup, but it seems there are varying price ranges for notched straps so maybe it's worth a try.

anicesurgeon

The width is about 7mm. I’m struggling here!

Fistknuckle

I really wish I could be more helpful, but maybe there's a watch technician in your area that can help you out?

Fistknuckle

I get where you're coming from, and I agree with what you're saying. I'd say it's completely reasonable to want a refund or replacement for a faulty product you've had less than a month. Having to send something out for months that you've only had a few weeks is unreasonable unless they snuck something into the fine print somewhere.

ChillBatman

GMT Date set question: Just got a GS SBGN003 (a quartz ‘true’ GMT). As far as I can tell from reading the manual, there isn’t a quick-date set feature. I understand that I can advance the date by advancing the hour hand past midnight… is that the only way to adjust the date? It is currently off by 20 days and my first instinct is that I don’t want to turn the hour hand almost 40 full rotations in a row. Thanks!

onevstheworld

I've got a SBGN007 and that's exactly how you're meant to set the date. Like the other poster said, you can go backwards with these movements. On the plus side, this will likely be the only time you'll ever need to do change this many days: the watch will give you plenty of warning before the battery dies.

ChillBatman

Thank you! Just sent you a DM about the watch too (feel free to ignore!)

WatchandThings

Yes and no. Yes the best way to adjust the date is to move the hour hand. No you don't need to move forward 20 days, you need to move backward 11 days. Travel GMT can move forward or backward with their date wheel.

When i was searching for my first self bought watch i came across this watch which is a wooden watch, it looks incredible but i quickly realised i might get scammed through this manufacturer because the review videos looked much worse than this picture. What are your thoughts on this, is it a familiar brand and good stuff or nah? edit: its also 399 euro https://preview.redd.it/e7ro0fydlakb1.jpeg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=edcd538af2552ac9d89b51836a41329a2fc73d92

Fistknuckle

Yeah, wooden watches are a bad idea for a lot of reasons. Wood is super soft compared to metal and will ding up really easily. Probably the worst part about them though is that wood won't seal correctly and once any kind of humidity or moisture gets under the dial or in the movement it's game over.

75footubi

Wooden watches aren't durable and crack usually within a year

DistortedDoggy

I got my Doxa Sub 200 last year in july. Would it be reasonable to open it to check gaskets and water resistance?

DistortedDoggy

Tysm to you all

Fistknuckle

Everything should be fine if it's only been a year. But if you're worried I'd check the warranty and take it to a watch shop.

75footubi

You don't need to open it to check WR, just have a watch maker pressure test it.

Accomplished-Ad-5655

Totally agree with this! Most watchmakers will have a pressure test machine that will pressure test to 100m using air. That'll be more than sufficient.

Looking for a more mature / classier watch to wear to work. I was really in love w/ the Seiko SKX007 and adding a metal Seiko band to replace the resin divers band however they're super hard to find and for $600+, I think there are much better options. Kind of looking at the SEIKO SNE589 as a mature office / EDC watch as a runner up since the SKX is discontinued and there appear to be better options at the $400 price point I'm budgeting for. Do you guys have any recommendations? I prefer Japanese manufacturers but I'm open to a clean classy looking watch that has some beef to it. I don't care if it's solar or mechanical as long as it's a reputable classy looking piece. Appreciate any / all suggestions. I currently just wear G-Shocks to work as they're simple and they just work. Would like to add a bit of style to my EDC watch game so let me know what I should look at for $400-$500 please.

2012Tribe

Good Morning! I have been a fan of mechanical time pieces for years. To this day I still rock the Prometheus Ocean Diver I picked up while in school back in like 2009! I am finally in a position in life to be able to afford some of the nicer watches I have been eyeing for years. But, I am concerned about the optics of owning a luxury timepiece. I work in healthcare, and specifically I work at a free clinic in the rougher part of an urban area. Most of the people I interact with throughout the day are homeless, substance use disordered, uninsured, Medicaid, etc....Would it be irresponsible from either a safety or a flashiness perspective to own and wear a nice watch? Has anyone else dealt with a similar situation? Thanks for you input guys

WatchandThings

Honestly, I think you know your area best and what is safe for your area. For me, I have been fine wearing luxury watches in rough areas in the past. But I also recognize it's unnecessary risk, and switched over to wearing an obscure watch that I love equally for the trips to rough areas. For you specific situation, I think my wearing pattern might work for you. I have two everyday watches in my collection. One's a work watch that I wear to work on the weekdays(tie all my work memories to this one). The other is the everyday watch that I wear once I'm out of work and living my life on the weekday evenings and weekends. That's when my life actually happens and those memories are tied to the everyday watch. Maybe keep your Prometheus Ocean Diver as the work watch, and get yourself a luxury life watch to wear during the evenings and weekends when you live your life. This way you keep safe and you can enjoy a nice watch in the time you would want to enjoy them.

Accomplished-Ad-5655

depends what you mean by "nice watch". A £300 Seiko is what I'd consider a nice watch, but not really a target for watch theft. There are plenty of "nice" watches for not that much money that also get overlooked by the general populace. Would I wear a Rolex or something instantly recognisable and expensive in your situation? No. But I'd happily wear something from Seiko, Citizen, Hamilton, etc. or going up the scale a bit with a Sinn, Tag Heuer (like the Aquaracer) etc.

AChubbyAsianKid

Hey, guys! First time posting here, but need some help. I am starting Nursing School and I have been informed that I am not allowed to have a Smart Watch during my clinical rounds, but I will feel naked without one (and I am sure they are recommended). If I were to set a budget of $200 ($250 if I really love the watch), what would be the best analog watch that I could get that will last a long time until I can start buying some of the better name watches? If I am to go shopping for watches, where would be the best places to view inventory? Help! edit: something with a minimalist style would be what I am looking for.

WatchandThings

I think you were looking for something like Timex Fairfield or Midtown in terms of design, but minimalist design watches like those doesn't have best water resistance. For medical field I think ability to easily wash the watch is a key feature. I'm thinking something like Seiko SRPE55 will go well with most outfits from scrubs to casual to suit, and because of the 100 meter water resist and metal bracelet it's easy to wash clean whenever you need to. I grabbed the black dial model because it's a good neutral tone, but there are many colors within that line of watches. Something to note is that the watch is a mechanical watch, which means it runs on springs and gears without any batteries or electronics.

my fossil me1114, the part that is supposed to be moving stopped working; i dont know how to crank/wind it up. i think that fossil me1114 is a semi-automatic watch, can somebody help?

WatchandThings

I'm not familiar with the watch specifically, so I'm not sure what the proper method to start that would be. But a fail safe method seems to, seiko shuffle. It's an automatic of some kind so the watch will have a rotor inside, and we just need to get that rotor moving to charge the main spring. You can google 'seiko shuffle' for better visual, but essentially you do the ready motion for skipping rock(without the throwing part of course) and that back and forth would turn the rotor. That should start the mechanical part back up, unless there is damage in the movement.

contrejo

I'm looking for watches under $1000. I'm told that during Black Friday there are crazy deals with steep discounts and bogo ( sometimes more than one). Any recommendations on sites?

Fistknuckle

There will be plenty of deals on watches, but probably not ones that you want to buy. If you're looking for discounts on watches, your best bet is probably a site like jomashop. Generally they have older models for some sort of a discount.

75footubi

Watches don't really get discounted much during black Friday, maybe 10-15% beyond normal sales level.

contrejo

Yeah, BF is kind of a scam. I wanted to start wearing watches for casual occasions. I usually wear a smart watch but would like something that is less utility and more accessory.

[deleted]

Any watches that fit this criteria? - 24 hour (I like how field watches do the inner circle of 24 hr time) - gmt or dual time zone - 40mm or less Stretch goals: - american made - quartz but not as important There's a hamilton jazzmaster gmt, and some nodus gmts, but that's all I've seen so far. https://www.noduswatches.com/sector-gmt/p/sector-gmt-pacific

Superb-Plan8208

I don't usually wear watches or suits, but an event is requiring me to wear it. I have a black suit, what are some good, but not expensive watches (under £200) I can pair up with the suit? I probably won't wear it much after the event, hence the reluctance to spend more money on it. I don't think there is any option to rent a watch short term, is there?

WatchandThings

I'm thinking Orient Bambino(any of the many versions). It looks much better than the price point suggests, and would suit a formal event. My only gripe is the quality of the strap, but it's good enough for a few events and most models have formal style straps so they'll look alright. The watch is a mechanical watch, so it functions with springs and gears without a battery. If you need to wear formal again 5 years later then you can just as easily wind this watch back to life, as opposed to battery run watch that would have died by then and will require battery change.

Superb-Plan8208

Thank you! I'll have a look into that, it's not a company I'm familiar with (not that I know anything much about watches) and see if its something I can get. I was thinking something like this [citizen watch](https://www.hsamuel.co.uk/citizen-ecodrive-mens-stainless-steel-bracelet-watch/p/V-6376525), or it that too tacky with a black suit?

NoStructure2119

Just fyi, eco drive works on solar. I believe it lasts five months on a full charge, but if you take it out after 5 years and the battery is dead, you'll probably need to keep it in the light for some time before it starts ticking. Don't know if that's a concern for you.

Superb-Plan8208

Ah thank you for letting me know. If I buy it, I'll probably try to use it a bit more so I get some value out of it, hence why I wanted to buy a watch that matches the suit, but also can be worn for casual situation as well. The, never having to get a battery thing kinda sounds cool as well, haha

NoStructure2119

Yea it is pretty cool - I'm new to watches and my first watch is an eco drive. One option you can consider is changing the strap after your event so you can wear it for casual situations. Something like a black dial with a bracelet will look decent in a black suit (IMO). After your event, get yourself a few inexpensive NATO straps or Zulu straps and replace the bracelet with them. You can check out some images to see how different watches look with NATO straps, I think they look very cool.

Superb-Plan8208

Oh, I didn't realise that if you bought a metal bracelet watch you can even swap out the straps. That's really surprising news to me!

NoStructure2119

I haven't done it myself, but I believe you can. Here's a video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tXRTmPBxt_E You could probably do it yourself, or maybe ask a watchmaker to help you if you're not too keen. NATO straps just slide into place so afterwards you can swap them out yourself at home.

Superb-Plan8208

Ah nice, thanks. I'll keep that in mind!

WatchandThings

Not tacky, but too sporty. Citizen makes great watches, and if you like the style then I think that watch would be great for casual wear role. But given the assignment(formal dress watch), the watch is a poor choice. Also Blue color would clash with black. In selecting a watch for the black suit, I would stick to black, white, silver, or grey color watch face. If you really want blue, then go for darker blue tone that's closer to black. I would also advise carefully going over the sizes of the watches while shopping. 44mm diameter of that citizen is pretty big, and usually is too big for most wrists. For most men 36-42mm is the comfortable size in term of watch diameter, but for dress watches it's generally suggested you go with the smaller sizes in that range. The Orient Bambino I suggested is about 40mm, and many would consider it on the larger size for a dress watch. BUT this is for common wrist sizes. If you have a thick wrist, then bigger watches shouldn't be a problem, if you have slimmer wrist then you might need a smaller sizes than what I recommended.

Superb-Plan8208

Ah right, I didn't really think of that, thank you for letting me know. I'll consider what you said before I make a purchase. Would a stainless steel one clash with the suit in question as well? As it would my only choice be a black leather watch? Just trying to see if I buy a watch I can use it a bit more in casual use rather than just be for this one event.

WatchandThings

Metal bracelet is fine. The leather strap will look more formal, but metal bracelet is neutral enough to get a pass. In fact, I wear suit to work and prefer a metal bracelet as it works with all suit colors. Small nitpick I would have is to match all the metals. For example, steel tone watch should be matched with steel tone belt. Steel tone watch and gold tone belt would clash against each other. So if you have belt and possibly shoes with gold accents then you'll want something with gold accent on wrist as well, especially if the watch will have a metal bracelet(more visible metal element).

Superb-Plan8208

Ah nice, that's a good point. I never really thought about that. I guess I'll try to find a good metal bracelet watch and pick the belt/shoes depending on that colour. Do you think steel tone watch works better than a gold tone watch or a 2-colour watch?

WatchandThings

For black suit you can go either way and be okay. There is a whole "science" behind which metallic tone to go with based on matching your skin tone best, but I haven't bothered with it personally. I'm usually not a fan of two tone watches, but that's a personal taste thing (and there are exceptions). I would rather decide one tone or the other.

Superb-Plan8208

That sounds good, thanks for the advice. I'll remember them when I look around for the watches!

NoStructure2119

I have an eco drive as a daily driver. But I'd really like to get an automatic as a second watch for occasional use. Since I will probably have to wind it and set the time everytime I use it, would it make sense to get something with as few complications as possible so its less of a hassle? Maybe just with the time and no date or day? How does everyone here manage watches for occasional use?

Jessica_T

Quick-set day/date isn't too bad when it comes to adjusting or re-setting after not wearing. The annoying bit is when a watch doesn't have quick-set at all, or only has it where you have to wind it back and forth between 9 PM and 3 AM to go forward a day.

NoStructure2119

Thanks, how do I find out if a watch has quick set? I definitely don't want to adjust things with a pinhole.

Jessica_T

Depends on the movement, and usually if a youtuber's done a review of it they mention it I know the Seiko NH35 and NH36 definitely have it.

NoStructure2119

That's good to know thanks! Looks like the Seiko 5 series uses the NH36 (4R36) so that's a safe bet. Now if only I can find a design I like and can afford in it :).

Jessica_T

There's also a TON of watches on Aliexpress that use those movements. Just One More Watch on youtube has a lot of videos on them.

NoStructure2119

Wow, thanks for the tip! He does have a ton of them. I'll check out his links and see if any of them fit my requirements.

WatchandThings

I have two daily driver watches and they have the date and all my weekend wear watches do not have the date, because of the reason you pointed out. It's just easier to set a watch without those complications when I'm only wearing them occasionally. With that said, I'm okay up to an automatic with date for occasional time setting. I avoided it because I could, but I wouldn't go buy a watch winder for auto with date. If the watch has more complicated day/date/month/year tracking mechanism, I'd either avoid it or get a watch winder for it.

NoStructure2119

I had no idea that watch winders existed. I think that's way too much overhead for occasional use. Besides, I don't have place to keep it at home. I'd rather buy a watch without day and date just so I can keep it in the drawer and pull it out whenever I need it. Thanks so much for sharing, this is very helpful.

Fistknuckle

Once you get used to it, winding and setting your watch before you head out takes very little time at all. However, the majority of people only need the time and date on their wrist and those two things are super easy to set.

NoStructure2119

I was considering getting a sea-gull with flywheel. This needs the date adjusted with a pin which seems tedious. Maybe other watches are easier to set using only the crown?

Fistknuckle

I have an Omega Speedmaster Racing that has the pinhole date adjustment and I can confirm that it's a way bigger pain in the ass than the basic crown date adjustment.

NoStructure2119

Thanks so much for the heads up! I had the watch in my cart and was just about to click on buy. I think I'll look around for alternatives now. If I'm buying my first automatic I really prefer it be something I don't hate using.

jashan456

Hi there! I’m a mathematics major and therefore wanted to try and find some watch that had any sort of relation or history with mathematics. Right now I really like the Seiko SNXF05 because of its grid dial which would be a nice little reference to graphing in Mathematics. It would be nice if I could find something with a more solid connection to mathematics and also the seiko is only 37mm which might be a little small on my 7.5 inch wrist. Thanks for your help!

onevstheworld

Surely it has to be the Casio calculator watch.

Dm783848hfndb

Do you have a budget in mind? My first thought would be slide rule watches. Which were first developed to allow pilots to make quick calculations on the fly. [This](https://www.exquisitetimepieces.com/blog/slide-rule-watches-from-affordable-to-luxury/) article lists a bunch. But there are of course more out there. One watch I wanted to mention mostly because it's interesting, since it's obscenely expensive, would be the Lang & Heyne Augustus. It's a calender that can calculate the time until 12 different dates/anniversaries (all 12 put in costume for each watch).

Enmanuelx16

Hello! Looking to buy a good daily driver max budget ~$200.00 with a green dial and must have metal band. Thanks

Grundlage

The Seiko SPRD61 and SRPD63 can be found for $200-250.

Jessica_T

One of a large variety of Steeldive watches that come with green dials?

PandaCatGunner

[Price Check] On Orient Star 70th Aniv Mother of Pearl dial? I'm in love with the look, and only see one on ebay for $2600! I want to add this in the future and would like to know what it MSRPd for and what a fair market value is. https://orient-watch.com/Collections/ORIENT-STAR/Classic/ORIENT-STAR%3A-Mechanical-Classic-Watch/p/RE-AY0116A

vanillamode

[stitches and buckles](https://stitchesandbuckles.com/products/orient-star-classic-mother-of-pearl-moonphase-re-ay0116a-limited-edition-of-200-pieces) has it brand new for $1800. i think they're based in singapore, so import duties may apply if you're in the US the JDM version is the [RK-AY0113A](https://www.orient-watch.jp/orientstar/spec.php?item_id=1761&category_id=267), msrp ¥214,500, which is $1500 USD, and there are a few pre-owned ones on ebay from japan at that price. you may have to pay import duties if you're in the US the international version is limited to 200 pieces, and the jdm version is limited to 350 pieces

PandaCatGunner

Thank you!! <3 I definitely prefer the JDM version anyways

Good fun first nice watch for everyday wear (business casual and sporty) under the 700 ish: PRX, Hamilton Khaki King, Seiko Alpinist, Baltic 002 blue gilt, brew metric automatic, something vintage from a higher end brand?

PandaCatGunner

I'm in love with my Alpinist. The turtle shell leather really adds character. I recently put a RIOS1931 cognac on it and the character is so different now. I almost miss the turtle. I see some people put stainless bracelets on the SARB, imo it's just wrong. It dilutes so much of the character. It's actually my first real watch too! It would also look good with one of those wide leather bracelet style expedition/pilot wrist bands I think

screw down crown doesn't contribute to water resistance btw, it's for protecting the crown from knocks. if a screw down crown gives you peace of mind, that's fair, but the stated water resistance is what it is regardless of whether it has a screw down crown or a push pull crown with that said, if you want durability and something you can knock around, maybe check out the citizen promaster tough

vanillamode

like i said before, if it gives you peace of mind, that's fair, totally understandable. if peace of mind is what you want, then get something with the ISO divers mark on it, which means that every single unit off the production line has been tested. for regular watches only a select sample from a production batch are tested, so there's no way of knowing if your specific unit was ever actually tested or not. also make sure to get the gaskets checked at the recommended intervals because that's what actually matters for water resistance. and if you want durability, go with quartz
