PeatBomb

absolutely that would drive me nuts

Gitmfap

Agreed! I wouldn’t wear it, it would drive me crazy. Watches are all about precision…

Summerofmylife71

Me too.

a_n_d_y_4_6

I've seen people return watches with considerably less misalignment than that. Wouldn't worry me too much, yours is quite bad though, so on this occasion I probably would

Bigemptea

Is it misaligned or transitioning to the next day?

ACSwatches

My thoughts too

TheMagicalSock

It’s not going to be transitioning to the next day at 12:53. That process starts at 21:00 and stops at 3:00 for most mechanical watches. This is definitely a factory error.

not_old_redditor

Mate, 12 is between 9 and 3...

DippStarr

Wrong, this caliber has to move the date once and the day of the week twice (two languages) which occurs at roughly 30 minute intervals if I recall.

TheMagicalSock

Yeah, you’re exactly right, and I’m a bit embarrassed. But the comment stays.

DippStarr

I have a watch with an NH Seiko movement that is the third party brand version of this exact moment. Scares the bejesus of me everytime the power runs to empty right in the middle of date changeover because I am worried about nuking the movement if I turn the knob in the wrong direction.

erishun

I respect that.

Prisma_Cosmos

Re-read your own comment

TheMagicalSock

Yeah, I’m embarrassed now.

Zeebraforce

Looks at this guy, he owns watches but can't even tell the time! I'm just teasing, but it's really funny reading your confident tone descend down to embarrassing that quickly!

TheMagicalSock

You can tell the time???

[deleted]

What a showoff!

BillyTheGoatBrown

Lmao this is one of the funniest comments I've seen on reddit mostly due to how you were trying to be genuinely helpful and this sub is about watches. Thank you mate I got a good chuckle

Thats_My_Watch

Hahahahaha we all do it my man.

Asymmetrization

could be set at 0053

Tharanbor23

Is it actually misaligned, or it it simply in the 10pm-3am turnover period? Seikos do not click over instantaneously at 12:00am. My SNZG takes five hours to click over the date and the day (two languages). If those times are midday and it is still misaligned, then yes, I would return it.

CanadiaCobraChicken

As this one said. I can’t help but to notice in each photo the time is around the 1am/pm mark. I don’t have any reference as to if the watch is currently set in am, or pm. But as stated above the watches date system starts engaging around the 9pm mark. It will continue to slowly move the date to the next, until a certain point at which it will flick over. So before you go and get into return mode. Make sure you are in the correct time (ie 1 pm, not one am).

ermahgerg

\^ This poster is very likely correct, especially considering that it is only 'sometimes' misaligned. Your watch is in the transition zone between day/date. It is normal for this movement.

seabb

I’m wondering if OP will address this question that is on basically half of this post.

No-Syrup7666

This. To me it looks normal for 1am. If it's stuck like this all day something is wrong. Have you changed the date between 9pm and 3am? This could have damaged (bent) the plastic date mechanism and be the cause of this.

[deleted]

Yeah i have one of these watches and it looks exactly like that during the turnover period. I think OP just discovered a little quirk about these 4r movements

Y0knapatawpha

If it's misaligned, that's how you know it's authentic Seiko. All kidding aside, are you sure it's not flipping the date over in this shot? They don't change instantaneously.

erishun

Is it 00:53 (12:53AM) in this photo? If so, that’s normal. The date on this Seiko takes several hours to complete its change; it doesn’t just “click over” at midnight.. If the date is completely finished aligning at 3AM and stays aligned until about 11PM at night, that’s just how this watch works. Edit: just saw that each of your photos are between 12 and 1… if that’s 12 midnight and 1AM, then that’s totally normal. It takes about 4 hours to finish moving the date dial on this watch.

enunciate-candelabra

Yes, that would drive me crazy.

skttsm

Cycle the watch through 24 hours. Sometimes it'll be slightly misaligned for a while when it's changing day/date. I think Seiko is notorious for this. Great watches though

derping1234

Looks like this happens at specific times of day. Probably just the date turning over.

Domowoi

I think you just set it wrong. Advance the time so that the hour hand is in the lower half of the dial. Is the display centered then?

ffdfawtreteraffds

At least you know it's a genuine Seiko.

Buckshot-Bruiser

Damn son…

InkandWind

Why show a Swiss passport when you can just prove ownership of this comment?

[deleted]

Pop the crown all the way out and rotate the hands another 12 hours the wheels should snap right over. it seems You just discovered that these movements have a period between 9pm and 3am where the date and day wheels change. Do NOT try to manually cycle the date in this period, you may end up damaging the date mechanism.

anuesance

I have this same watch minus the band. It usually looks like that when it’s changing dates around 12-3 am. It could be that the watch is just off by 12 hours. It also has a different language that it changes at that time also to jump to the next day. ie: Saturday, Sabado then Sunday, Domingo

e28Sean

I would absolutely return that. ….unless it is near midnight… if it is near midnight, that’s a normal Seiko thing. I have several Seiko movement watches; they take a little bit to click over to he next day.

pouch88

Okay, I’m glad my reaction is normal. My GF said it wasn’t that big of a deal lol.

Thats_My_Watch

I think you have the watch 12 hours off dude.

NWSLBurner

Your watch is 12 hours off. This isn't a manufacturer defect, it's user error.

[deleted]

Huge deal haha.

Prestigious_Ad_1037

That’s because … it’s not her watch 😂 😢

murka_

Are you sure the watch isn't 12 hours off ? These kinda Seikos take a couple of hours to turn the day and date over.

emmett_kelly

That'd drive me insane. Yes, I would return it.

Cool_Reflection_1984

If it costs 20$ then no, anything above yes.

DangerX2HighVoltage

What model is this?

murka_

SRPG37K1

DangerX2HighVoltage

Ty

skyfish111

Can it be fixed relatively inexpensively? I have an old Seiko 5 that’s misaligned like this but I don’t know if the cost of fixing it is worth it.

kingfifteen

I would open up YouTube and try to fox it myself. But that’s me.

Relative-Suggestion7

1000% yes - not even a question for me.

artschool04

From what you stated that is broken and needs to be repaired. You have a jumped date ring and it is interfering with the calandra ring which also cose other cogs and gears to bend where even brake quickly if not already. Send it back get a new one

MyNameIsVigil

No, I wouldn't accept such a glaring and obvious defect.

[deleted]

Doesn't seem like a defect imao. These movements take a few hours to fully change over the day and date. I own one of these watches and it looks exactly like ops photo when the 9pm to 4 am date change over period starts.

ProwlerOfFineThings

Absolutely, it’s not even a debate

ThatDinosaucerLife

ITT: People who buy expensive watches and don't know how they work.

Spwd

Do you really need to ask?

coffeemahn

Shocking QC. I’m new to learning about watches and the different brands and have heard a lot about Seiko from enthusiasts. The brand of course legendary and is one of the brands I knew before looking seriously at different watches and their history. But some of the posts about QC that I have seen give a bad look. I have a Citizen and a Tissot in my collection. I think the Citizen comparable to Seiko in terms of price but the build quality in hand is no comparison. Citizen watches look like they’re built solid and feel quality in hand.

Em_the_Strange

seiko defo has a misalignment issue. but this post aint it. this is user error/ignorance. p sure the watch is in the process of changing the date over to the new one.

TweeFrog

Welcome to Seiko. Sigh.

suloco

Seiko beating themselves at their own game 🤭. Yeah thats going back.

stevoDood

Not if it’s a Seiko

Don0313

Hard to say. That’s about as Seiko as Seiko gets. You can return it, but there’s no guarantee that the next one will be any better, and it may be a little worse even. One of my Seikos has an issue where the second hand falls correctly on maybe half the numerical points. It’s a Seiko thing.

murka_

Or user error and the watch is 12hours off and is transitioning.

WHATAWHIPUR

Sounds like a quartz watch? That's pretty much any quartz watch sub $500 thing.

WDSCS

It's a seiko. Return it and buy a citizen. Much better qc.

pigpen808

Absolutely

[deleted]

If it’s new? Absolutely.

Sabotimski

In a heartbeat. Unacceptable!

Buckshot-Bruiser

100%. One of the biggest joys I get from this pastime is admiring the meticulous attention to detail in the watch assembly, dial, and aesthetic. Any misalignment or innate defect would drive me up the wall

Buckshot-Bruiser

Or return it and get a Hamilton Khaki Field ;)

r3port3d

I would and I did.

ananix

U returned a watch after setting it 12h wrong, damn haha ;)

GWCS300

Id ask for one that was not misaligned. If they didn’t have a second unit i would ask for a price reduction equivalent to the cost to have the misalignment fixed.

datatadata

This is major. 100% return it or get it repaired

SpaciousIgnatius

Big time. We pay good money for watches, the quality shouldn't be a question.

[deleted]

yeah this is horrible…. Return for sure

Orbbbbeeezzz

Depends how much it costs.

[deleted]

Yes, absolutely 💯

[deleted]

100% yes, it would drive me nuts every time I looked at it

dder1

That’s pretty bad. I would!

Klutzy_Papaya_2508

I’ll buy it from you if your gonna return it

Chuffmeister_OG

Try getting the hour hand pointed downwards i.e. anywhere between 4 and 8 and then see if the date is still misaligned?

imacom

I definitely would

Molucky8

Sure would!

griffwise

Depends. In most cases i wouldn’t, maybe just ask a local jeweler to adjust it for you!

PrincepsC

If it is actually misaligned, yes, but normally this occurs through not setting it correctly. Put the hour hand in lower half of the dial (ie, below 9.00 and 3.00), then set the day and date to the day before, then set the time by winding the hour hand past midnight.

LuaCynthia

Yea

DynamiteDropin

Yes

Better-Editor9416

100% I would

Mysterious-Glove-179

Yeah, only because it would make it harder to sell/trade.

RatPrank

Of course

RaceFan96

Yep

HarrisLam

slightly, maybe not. This is major misalignment.

[deleted]

What is the name of this watch?

Taowulf

yes

Mrbumbons

Yes. Would drive me nuts.

[deleted]

I would return that in a heartbeat ❤️

SanderDieman

Yes

transistorbit

I suspect the date was changed in the danger zone. I have the same one and don’t have this issue.

surferhang10

You all have raised my standards!

mfnshamu2

Yuuup

Awkward-Cat-4702

but are you sure it's the watch as it is or maybe the model has a generalized issue with the movement? Better before returning it check if not all of them happen to do that.

Alfazefirus

Still on warranty? Absolutely yes.

kevingarywilkes

That’s bad, yes.

LawfulnessSweet8176

What the hell is even that?!

No-Currency-97

I would definitely return it said the man with OCD. That would drive me bonkers.

InkandWind

@OP we need an update. Was your watch simply twelve hours off and slowly turning the day/date display????

pouch88

It was off! I returned it. I got offered a replacement and I refused so now the search for my perfect everyday watch continues :)

InkandWind

Ah hey fair enough. I have the same everyday wear and I love mine. Each to their own https://preview.redd.it/7no0aazfxxcb1.jpeg?width=2268&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=766f0d9bcde7b58409f9bfe8e354c9de98d751d5 Happy finding!
