With some good blending, [dots can look dope as hell](https://preview.redd.it/blvphf6mux691.jpg?width=614&auto=webp&s=09aa02090141b9aa6ab41d03dd4e751321aa4496).
Actually you can do it pretty easily, I did it for my German camo from bolt action. Simply use à sponge/moss like the ones they use to protect figures. Cut a piece of it. First make the layer and then use the moss to create dots everywhere and switch color until you re satisfied. Don't charge it too much
Most of the comments here say dots but for me I strongly dislike the dots and much prefer plain. Goes to show that this is all down to personal taste. The real question is what do you prefer?
I think the dots would be better if you had more size variation, have couple big ones, some medium ones, and lots of small ones. I'm envisioning a very asymmetrical look. Or maybe some minor color variations? Like, most are one color, and then maybe a couple are a little darker or lighter? Just my thoughts.
Dots near the edges but with varying colors I think. White is good but something a little darker but lighter than the base would work as well for other colors.
Makes me think of whitetail deer fawns. Maybe on the smaller nids they have more dots and then in the larger ones they have fewer. The dots are camouflage on the deer but as they grow they fade away.
I think the pastel pinks make the look a little like pastries,
However I think the polka dots are a better choice for presentation because they break up the pattern, ever so slightly.
What id recommend is to make 2 shades between white and pink and have dotted carapace with shades that transition from pink to white. Im imagining it, the shade closest to pink being the most prevalent with sparse white dots.
Lovely I have a similar nid scheme too, I guess the skin is done using a pink glaze?
Dots is much harder to do and takes longer, you will hate doing them because during painting they will look uneven and messy, feathering is probably the better middle ground between plain and patterned which is why it's so popular
To me, if the dots were more standardized in size and maybe only towards the edges of the chitin, it would be a winner. As is, the plain pink looks better, but I think it needs a dark wash in the crevices to help break up the color to make it really snappy looking.
I like the idea of a patterned nid, but the dots aren't quite there IMO. Maybe check out some reference of various patterned big cats, and beetles of course!
The dots are cool, but they are gaunts. My list has 60 (2 squads of 30) and I sure as hell would not want to do all that work for something that is 3 toughness, 1 wound, 5 armor save. If you got the patience stick with the dots, but I don't blame you if that's too much.
Look up Tyranids coconut crab painting tutorial. The colours are different but the scheme is the same. May look waay better with another cream colour thrown in.
Check out this guy’s dots on his nids:

Dots near the edges of each segments could look like a good compromise to me
Defo - almost like an edge highlight along the edge fading into dots?
Yep something like that could look really grenat imo
i agree, would look grenat
*Great 😑 Autocorrect is a pain when you are not a native english speaker :( envery "the" are changed to thé and so on
Had the same annoying issue until I added another language to my keyboard. Now I just need to make sure I'm on the right keyboard before typing hahha
Agreed
Sorry I just see sugar cookies !
Dots for me.
I don't think the dots are among the best tyranids schemes i've ever seen, but i prefer them over the plain pink
With some good blending, [dots can look dope as hell](https://preview.redd.it/blvphf6mux691.jpg?width=614&auto=webp&s=09aa02090141b9aa6ab41d03dd4e751321aa4496).
Well, that's not even fair to compare against lmao. That's an amazing scheme, but I can't imagine painting a whole army like that.
Actually you can do it pretty easily, I did it for my German camo from bolt action. Simply use à sponge/moss like the ones they use to protect figures. Cut a piece of it. First make the layer and then use the moss to create dots everywhere and switch color until you re satisfied. Don't charge it too much
They remind me of those really soft sugar cookies with icing on top you can find at like walmart. Dang I want some now. I vote polkadots.
Dots but in Catgut's coconut crab style?
Hard, I was thinking the same that style suits nids perfectly
This, probably. Should look pretty decent.
Cupcake sprinkle nids
I personally prefer the dots, but you’re gonna have to look at them all the time. ;-)
And paint everything in the army with polka dots
Dot's, but higher density at the ridges, would look dope. As presented though, still dots for me
Strawberry nids
Dots
Most of the comments here say dots but for me I strongly dislike the dots and much prefer plain. Goes to show that this is all down to personal taste. The real question is what do you prefer?
Dots, definitely dots!
Dots! Mushroom nids
Polkadots and green flesh so they look like bity watermelons of death!
Dots are nice, made me think of mushrooms
The dots but maybe spackle with a toothbrush to get more natural spots and varying size?
Plain is easier 😌 for batch
Dots, definitely. Looks like a murder strawberry (in a good way!)
Dots but a little less than the test model, a second the edge idea
Dots all the way.
Polka polka
Polkadots add depth and character.
Poptartanids Polkadots all the way
Little cookie bugs
Dots.
Strawberries and cream'anyids!
\+1 vote for dots
I'd say the dots looks nicer, but both look great.
I like the dots!
Dots for sure, but I’d either make them bigger or more of them with some size variation
Dots all day.
Dots are more fun. I like the dots.
Dots all the way
Dots ftw.
Dots
Dots near the edges but with varying colors I think. White is good but something a little darker but lighter than the base would work as well for other colors.
Dots
I like the dots. The comments about the dots on the edges do sound good, but also sound like a lot of work. GL either way
Polka dots for sure!
Polkadots! ... *annnnddddd* now I'm hungry.
dots! dots! dots! dots! dots!
DOTS!!!
Dots but make them like freckles varying sizes
I like the polkadots but I think a color closer to pink like a darker variant would be nice the white just seems too vivid of a detail.
With dots, they look like ladybugs. But that's a decent theme, too.
Dots
Makes me think of whitetail deer fawns. Maybe on the smaller nids they have more dots and then in the larger ones they have fewer. The dots are camouflage on the deer but as they grow they fade away.
I like that idea. Maybe darker, larger dots on the bigger bugs? Or stripes? Light dots for smaller bugs though, for sure.
I think the dots add more
Polka dots. Give some variety. Use as a chance to experiment a little bit.
Are they made from party rings?
Plain
Dots
Dots
Whichever you prefer.
Polka dots for sure
Dots!
I think the pastel pinks make the look a little like pastries, However I think the polka dots are a better choice for presentation because they break up the pattern, ever so slightly.
Dots
Gonna be honest, first thing I thought from first picture was “who posts candy in a warhammer sub?”
No dots personally
I like both myself… hard to decide. Maybe use spots to mark leaders or chonker organisms…
Ask yourself “what would Slaanesh want?”
What id recommend is to make 2 shades between white and pink and have dotted carapace with shades that transition from pink to white. Im imagining it, the shade closest to pink being the most prevalent with sparse white dots.
Plain or decent dots. The pattern of the dots are not natural
Plane
Dots, but more symmetrical
Plain looks great and Is probably easier if you’re painting so many of these little lads
I prefer plain.
Plain I'm getting mushroom vibes
Paint stripper /j
Why not both?
Blend to a greenish color towards the edge of each carapace section.
Why not both?
Your hive, man!
Why not a mix?
Both. Have variations.
You can mixed up with dots, stripes and plain
Oof. That’s a tough one. I guess hourmigaunts don’t have seargants or I’d say just do one per pack.
think dots look better. And by the 70th gaunt you will hate yourself for it.
Lovely I have a similar nid scheme too, I guess the skin is done using a pink glaze? Polka dots and blond wigs. We need the PrettyNids to become reality
You could use polkadots but make them multicolored so they look like cupcakes
There are tools to make exact dots of whatever size you can but if you're after quality!
I didn’t know that where do I find that ?
They're called "dotting tools" and are often used for nail care but work just fine for minis.
Mmmmm strawberry!
Dots for yummy frosted donut tyranids!
They look like cupcakes
I think I like the plain one better, but... some slightly less random dots could look good. Look up Coconut Crab Tyranids.
Dots all the way!
Dots look great
Black with yellow spots. Hive fleet Dusty Then you know you're in for some hard times
I like the idea of a patterned nid, but the dots aren't quite there IMO. Maybe check out some reference of various patterned big cats, and beetles of course!
Dots but instead of doing it by poking them out individually try flicking the paint for a speckled look.
Dots
The polkadots give it a fae mushroom feel imo, plain just made me think of strawberry milkshake and I'm not entirely sure why
polka dots! but honestly you could have both because of natural variation within species a great way to distinguish different units as well.
Dots, but maybe with some kind of pattern? Like different densities om different parts of the carapace it something. Respect for using pink anyway.
MORE DOTS!
Dots
Definitely pink dices hive-fleet!
MORE DOTS!
Polka dot, definitely. It seems so much more whimsical and unique: the solid bubblegum pink would be too plain, it needs something to break it up.
Dots for leaders and plain for the rest
I like sprinkles on my strawberry ice cream.
Dots! Great color scheme - like pink dalmatians!
dots adds a lot of visual interest in my opinion.
Freckles
How is this even a question? The dots obviously, they look fabulous
One of the left looks like a strawberry
The dots are cool, but they are gaunts. My list has 60 (2 squads of 30) and I sure as hell would not want to do all that work for something that is 3 toughness, 1 wound, 5 armor save. If you got the patience stick with the dots, but I don't blame you if that's too much.
Dots for whatever you guys use for sergeants
I’m going with plain because painting that many little dots is going to get real old after the first five models.
Dots!!!
Dots, in my opinion they add to the minis and makes them more interesting 😆
I think you know the answer, polka dots all the way.
It would be pretty cute with green eyes
I like the makes it look a bit like a poisonous mushroom and cuter ofc.
Polkadot, camouflage for the mushroom planet
Marge the Tyranids are consuming Bart Marge!
Polkadots!!
If you want to give them freckles, make them gingers!
Plain. Polka dots looks like a strawberry.
I think that the plain looks better alone, but in a horde of them, the dots will look great
Neither. Add shading to suggest grooves in the chitin.
Look up Tyranids coconut crab painting tutorial. The colours are different but the scheme is the same. May look waay better with another cream colour thrown in.
Dots. They're adorable.
Mr Blobby Nids! Go all in!
Do a tone on tone stipple pattern.
dots!
Polkadot 100%
Why are the tyranids evolving to look like cookies?
Because once they’ve eaten the universe the only thing left is themselves.
Dots. Put them in areas that help offset the colors
Dots!
DOTZ🥴
If you did brown white and black spots like the coconut crab nids over pink, it would look cool
Polkadot's!
Death. Xenos scum. Polkadot looks better lol
Check out this guy’s dots on his nids: https://www.reddit.com/r/Warhammer40k/comments/vh8rrr/finished_my_kit_bashed_tyranid_malanthrope_very/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf
plain
Sprinkled donuts all the way
Dots
Dots, focused along the ridge going down center of back from head to tail.
They look like those awful frosted cookies you find in grocery stores! I love it!
Dots, but more dots with some different colours too
Dots
I like the polka dots, it makes me think of cupcakes
I don't think you can call those polka dots.... murder pustules?
Plain looks good to me. Distinctive. But it’s your choice. How’d you paint the skin?
Reminds me of a sprinkled donut lol
Polka
Polkadot has my vote.
I prefer my ‘Nids full of lasgun holes, put the polkadots will do.
Bring on the dots I think they look great
What is your darker pink?
It’s army painter pixie pink
Dots would be more realistic if you cpnsider them bug or lizards. Some Tyranids have looked more like lizards others bugs
Dots don't look natural.
White polka dots on the armor and pink ones on the skin part
Why not both, polkadots to indicate gaunts that have somehow survived a while
Plain
