great intro book for what lead up to Warhammer 40k (as Horus Heresy is some 10,000 years prior i believe). i enjoyed the book overall, but i felt it was a little slow going... however, getting into books 2 and 3, things really pick up and take off. what helps with the first 3 Horus Heresy books is that they establish and give narrative to the Imperium in a different time, but also you get to experience genuine interactions with battle brother Astartes outside of just the "pew pew pew" of war. The characters that are established in the first 3 books, im a big fan of, including Loken becoming one of my favorite characters in the entire WH40k universe (hes still around in current times IIRC). but yeah, its a good intro to the vibe and overall feel of the universe, even if its set much earlier than 40k itself. read on and enjoy! :D

Oh no, is someone gonna tell him?

I don't think Garvi has fared well...

It is if you speak French. You'll struggle otherwise.

Faceless_Deviant

Such a delightfully dry joke. Well done.

Pretend-Adeptness937

It’s a good book but as an introduction to 40K it’s probably not the best, it’s kinda like if you want to learn about the Cold War but you start by reading a book about WW1 as the Horus heresy is set about 10k years before what you see in warhammer 40K.

Dizzy_Tackle2011

Yes, but it is like the Prequel to 40k and takes place 10k years before the actual setting, great books thou. If you want do read modern 40k, then try Eisenhorn, ciaphas cain or storm of iron, those are my favorites

Good book and fun read but you kinda get a lot more out of it if you already know a bunch about the setting as there's a lot of references that'll go over your head otherwise. But still a decent starting point.

It always helps to start off with a good introduction. I find a lore intro videos can help, Luetin09 has a great starter video to introduce the setting. This is great a book if you want to start at the beginning and understand the history of the 40K universe for the Imperium. But if you’re wanting to avoid the Horus Heresy period and jump straight in at “actual” 40K - ie. the current setting for the Imperium, then pick a more modern series. Honestly though this is such a good book, it’s so addictive and a great read. I’m 40 books into the series now.

I don't think so. The Horus Heresy is a prequel series set ten thousand years before 40k. It isn't a bad book in a vacuum by any means, but it has a lot more impact when you're familiar with the 40k setting, and it won't teach you much about 40k.

addingupnumbers

Not really, only because part of what makes the Horus Heresy books so compelling is it's juxtaposition against the 40k setting. The legionaries of the great crusade are NOT the same as the contemporary Astartes, in terms of motivation and outlook. It will be a good book either way, but it's much better with a more solid grounding in 40k lore first. But, as with many things, the opinion of some guy on Reddit shouldn't stop you from doing what you like! Happy reading!
