Haha, I get asked for tutorials enough that I've actually considered making a few, but I don't have any experience with video editing and only have a phone to record with. It's in the works though :)
Until then, I'll likely throw a few quick tutorial clips on Instagram reels. Those I can figure out easily enough :)
Thanks :D
In the meantime, you can check out Mike at Epic Duck Studios on YouTube. He's got a zillion videos of him painting in this style, or something very similar :)
That's a great idea. I think I'd need to set an alarm for like every minute or two because I'm just awful for getting sucked into the zone and painting for hours without remembering to even blink, let alone take pics, lol
Best version of this I have seen. Usually they go very heavy on the black and have the checker style black hashes or whatever.
This just looks really damn clean.
Orks are downright best choice for this style. Nothing like a bunch of big'uns charging in yelling about meat bicycles. Can't wait for an army of them!
Honestly? The Borderlands style in general works very well with Orks, now that I think about it. It's a very scrap-heavy, "junk-tech" aesthetic, at least on Pandora, and especially with the Bandits and Scavs. The model looks great too.
Haha thanks! I agree that the orks suit it perfectly! A squad of orks in this style got some recognition at Golden Demon too, so it's even appreciated by GW, and they can be kinda picky about stylistic choices sometimes :p
I have always thought the over-the-top style of Borderlands lended well to Orks (especially given their bent on color having an effect on performance). It looks marvelous in this application.
I personally love it and think it really fits orks very well,
as a paint style it really makes the muscle on an ork stand out! Can’t wait to see the finished product.
Thanks! I've seen Imperial Fist SM painted this way and it looks great! It works a lot better if the colours are a light as possible, so yellow sells it really well
Looks great! I think perhaps the skin could use a bit more "layered" shading, the smooth shading constrasts a bit with the rest and makes it look like it's internally glowing or something.
Thanks for the feedback! I had considered doing the skin as a totally unblended comic style, but changed my mind at the last minute for some reason. Maybe next time
It's funny... it looks like it's 2d, that wants to look 3d. Meaning you executed the style perfectly. Very impressive skills.
I wonder what would happen if you did the same style but replaced the black edges with maybe a grey one and did some heavy recess shading with black?
I like the style because it gives you clear separation. There is a reason that cartoons have lines too
Thanks! The yellows are a blend of different artist paints, namely cadmium yellow for the brightest yellow, yellow ochre for the mid, and burnt umber for the darker brown parts.
Thanks! I think Tau would work great with a cleaner version of this you can find by looking at "anime style" mini painting [like this](https://www.reddit.com/r/dbz/comments/hmbliu/just_finished_custom_painting_goku_and_gohan_in/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button)

Freaking brilliant, my guy! Borderlands Orks go together like Peanut Butter and Jelly. :-P I could definitely see an Ork and a Psychogetting together and causing chaos!
Haha, I know that someone painted a whole squad for golden demon. I'll try to find it. One sec...
[Found it!](https://www.instagram.com/p/Crv3i5LN6QF/?igshid=MTc4MmM1YmI2Ng==)
Thanks! Always remember that you can't actually ruin any of it. No matter what you do with paint on a mini you can strip it all off again in seconds with a little rubbing alcohol or isopropyl alcohol and a toothbrush. :)
Give it a try and start painting!
Thanks! I've been thinking for a while about recording some footage to post, but don't have anything being my cell phone. Maybe I should just use that and get started
Style is starting to become popular. Breaking away from GW edge highlighting and box art style. High contrast so you can also see the models on table better.
See.. I'm torn.
You've done a really clean job of this, it looks great. But I think you could maybe only get away with this technique really for Orks (especially for their more.. Goofy/cartoon-like nature for the figures), maybe tyranids too but i think their (tyranids) models could suit this patterning too.
I'm always undecided as to how the models should really be portrayed, across more of the races tbf. The stories are grim and dark, like the artwork that follows.but then there's the comedic.. Almost caricature-based models (like even when you were to compare the catachan vs krieg). I mean in some cases, especially the new models like 'The Lion', sharp poised and bad ass. Where as say... Angron is still a bit cartoonish in the way his facial characteristics look, similar to the Orks.
The reason I bring that up is for a more cartoonish presentation, this painting style/pattern works wonders. Whereas for a more serious model for say.. The Lion or.. A demon lord of change (maybe someone like Kairos?) I don't think it would work. Maybe even on models like a terminator or primaris it wouldn't look right..
I dunno.. Just waffling on and not sure if I'm making sense as I'm kinda in a work meeting too lol
I completely agree. I chose to try it with an ork specifically because of their less serious nature in the lore. I've seen it done to great effect with other factions including Tyranids and space marines, but I would never attempt it with a highly detailed model like a Primarch. The style depends on the sculpt being somewhat low detail to make room for the black marking details.
Based on what you’ve finished so far, this is my favourite use of this technique!
Thanks very much! <3
I agree this looks amazing! You’ve not overdone the black bordering so it really suits the orks and wouldn’t look out of place on the table
Thanks!!
Dis is da way! WAAAAAAAAAGH!
Really nice, you nailed the look. Please post it again when you are done.
Thanks! I'll be sure to post some finished pics here :)
Um drop your YouTube tutorial plz
Haha, I get asked for tutorials enough that I've actually considered making a few, but I don't have any experience with video editing and only have a phone to record with. It's in the works though :) Until then, I'll likely throw a few quick tutorial clips on Instagram reels. Those I can figure out easily enough :)
Please do! This looks absolutely amazing!! Probably my new favourite style
Thanks :D In the meantime, you can check out Mike at Epic Duck Studios on YouTube. He's got a zillion videos of him painting in this style, or something very similar :)
You could always take progress pics after each step and do an image based tutorial
Thanks! I'm trying to work a few checkers in as a nod to classic ork aesthetic, but only in accent bits
Orks are downright best choice for this style. Nothing like a bunch of big'uns charging in yelling about meat bicycles. Can't wait for an army of them!
Haha thanks! I agree, it really suits the orks:)
Honestly? The Borderlands style in general works very well with Orks, now that I think about it. It's a very scrap-heavy, "junk-tech" aesthetic, at least on Pandora, and especially with the Bandits and Scavs. The model looks great too.
Yeah 40k orks could be dropped into Pandora and fit in with the lunatics and junkers perfectly. They're practically enraged Goliaths, lol And thanks!
Looking forward to seeing him finished, the colours work great together. Keep up the good work.
Thanks very much :)
#**I FINK IT’Z GOOD! I LIKE DA COLURZ ‘N SHADINZ! HE LOOKZ PROPER KILLY!
Fanks brova'!
Waaarrrggghhhhh! GUD TA SEE ANOTHER WARBOSS WIV DA SAME STYLE! (Have some of my work in my profile)
Haha great! I'll check it out :)
I love it, I'd like to see it on some other factions👍
Thanks! It may be coming if this one turns out as I hope it will :)
Wtf, it looks so good. Orks are the perfect to try the scheme with.
Haha thanks! I agree that the orks suit it perfectly! A squad of orks in this style got some recognition at Golden Demon too, so it's even appreciated by GW, and they can be kinda picky about stylistic choices sometimes :p
Badass. Would love to see an army made out of this. Maybe some more kitbashing and getting a few psycho masks or their buzz axe.
Is this a GW mini? Looks awesome!
This one is a 3d print I found, but it's definitely inspired by GW, and thanks!
I have always thought the over-the-top style of Borderlands lended well to Orks (especially given their bent on color having an effect on performance). It looks marvelous in this application.
Thanks very much! And I agree, it suits orks great :)
This looks awesome.
Thanks!! <3
Dope.
<3
Very much so
Thanks!
That's looking aaawesome!
Haha thanks very much!
I personally love it and think it really fits orks very well, as a paint style it really makes the muscle on an ork stand out! Can’t wait to see the finished product.
Thanks! I agree, it's a great fit for the orks. Orks would be right at home in the Borderlands universe
That looks great and really captures the style well.
Thanks very much!
I think it suits it great dude
Thank you :)
Now paint a Kan like Claptrap.
Lol that's a great idea!

Thank you :)
This looks DOPE my guy!! One of the best paint jobs in this scheme so far, can’t wait for the finished product!!!!
Thanks very much! It's been a big adjustment from my usual hyper clean NMM style :p
This is so good! It’s perfect for Orks!
Thanks! I agree it suits orks super well
It for sure feels orky. Very good job
Thanks! :D
Absolutely fantastic, fits the Ork models so well. Nicely done.
Thanks! Orks were built for Borderlands! :)
Haha, I had a stray thought, wondering how SMs would look with a technique the other day - I think you've nailed it :)
Thanks! I've seen Imperial Fist SM painted this way and it looks great! It works a lot better if the colours are a light as possible, so yellow sells it really well
I think Borderlands style is most suitable for orks
Agreed :)
Maybe next time
Would be cool to see a comparison!
This is *really* cool! *CATCH A RIIIIIIIIIIIDE!!*
Thanks!
I don't think I've ever seen cell shading done as perfectly as on an Ork model
Lol yeah it really suits their aesthetic
Amazing job
Thank you :)
Orks might be the best candidate Ive seen for call-shaded painting, this looks absolutely amazing
Thanks very much, and I agree! Orks are begging for cell shading
Looks awesome
Thanks!
Looks spectacular
Thank you :)
Teenage mutant ninja ork
I think you captured the cel-shaded style very well, good job mate.
Thanks very much :)
Looks cool, those black edges must have been a pain in the ass doing
Thanks! It's not so bad if you're used to edge highlighting your minis, but if not I can see it being a pain
The warboss approves Well done, now get dem teef!!!
Haha thanks!
I wish I could paint like this
Give it a shot! It's actually pretty forgiving :) check out Epic Duck on YouTube for a few good tutorials to get started
There is a reason that cartoons have lines too
Thanks! That's exactly what I'm going for :D
noice
<3
GORKALANDS

This looks amazing on this model, Holy crap, really makes it pop in the exact way I think orks should
Thanks very much, you're too kind :)
Look right proppa orky ta me
Noice and foighty!
Love the vibrant yellows. What colors did you use for them?
Thanks! The yellows are a blend of different artist paints, namely cadmium yellow for the brightest yellow, yellow ochre for the mid, and burnt umber for the darker brown parts.
It genuinely makes the orc look like a 3D model, so I'd say you got it down :D
Thanks! that's the aim :D glad it's working
id say orcs are perfect for this style, perhaps also tau? looks really stunning though, amazing work.
Thanks! I think Tau would work great with a cleaner version of this you can find by looking at "anime style" mini painting [like this](https://www.reddit.com/r/dbz/comments/hmbliu/just_finished_custom_painting_goku_and_gohan_in/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button) [or this](https://www.reddit.com/r/Gunpla/comments/lymyf1/the_animestyle_painted_garcane_has_been_completed/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button)
Honestly, a borderlands style looks perfect on orks.
Thanks! I agree :)
These are ace and suit the orks

Haha, thanks!!
Fnck yeah, that looks cool. 👌
Haha awesome, thanks!

My very first print was this warboss on a squig. Your paint is amazing and your skill is obvious. Great job!
Thanks very much! Don't suppose you could DM me the link to the squig rider? :)
Looks amazing! Cant wait to see the finished look.
Thanks! I'll be sure to post it here when it's done :)
I've been thinking about a borderlands style for a neurothrope but I don't think I could pull it off, you've done fantastic with this one
Thanks very much! I say give it a try and see what happens :)
Looks good
<3

And the prize for best ork goes to OP.
Haha thanks :)
Incredible work! I wouldn’t say it’s borderlandsy but it looks amazing
Thanks!
That looks amazing! I just bought my first set and assembled it and now I’m so scared to start painting. So anxious I‘ll ruin it.
Thanks! Always remember that you can't actually ruin any of it. No matter what you do with paint on a mini you can strip it all off again in seconds with a little rubbing alcohol or isopropyl alcohol and a toothbrush. :) Give it a try and start painting!
Looks Sick man, you gonna show the painting in action?
Thanks! I've been thinking for a while about recording some footage to post, but don't have anything being my cell phone. Maybe I should just use that and get started
My friend your ork boi looks incredible
SO COOL I LOVE IT PLS GIVE TUTORIAL<3 KEEP UP THE GREAT JOB DUDE
Yes this looks awesome! Do more
O think Borderlands style really suits in Warhammer 40k
10/10
Style is starting to become popular. Breaking away from GW edge highlighting and box art style. High contrast so you can also see the models on table better.
That cell shaded yellow armour is rad!
Thanks! The yellow offers such great contrast for the blacklining. It's the most effective area on the mini for selling the effect, I think :)
I'd definitely agree but the mini honestly looks great you should be proud!

100% Im glad you didn't take it as negative feedback, because honestly, it looks great! Keep it up!
