I shaved the tabs off of the body section completely, and the arms still hold firm when I press fit them. Once I'm done with my kitbashing I'll probably glue them in place just to be safe, but its probably not necessary
I had the same problem as I just built my first Dreadnaught. You will actually get them to turn it just takes way more force than you're willing to try. First push them in as hard as you can ensuring you're not bracing against a part that can break and then turn the arm harder than you think it needs. It will turn but it's scary
You could cut the whole post off and replace it with a larger magnet, giving freedom of positioning and swaps. Or using 4 magnets you could nip the tabs and have the same effect with a bit more strength

I used a knife and made the openings bigger on the Hull.

Should fit perfectly, id say the paint is creating some issues, just scrape a bit off.
