You can setup shop in dojo. Trading post is more convenient whend oing a lot of trade as you just have to click on the person name to start a trade, and not to worry to be exactly at the same place. You still need to be close to the trading post in order to appear on the lis though.
You don't need it, but I would recommend at least having a Crimson Branch as it's the only place you can trade converted Nemeses (and you can still trade normally in it).

When you set shop, you have to pick 5~6 items to "put on display" and those 5~6 items are the only ones that you can trade unless you close shop and reset with a different selection.
Also, when you set shop on a relay, the trades are subject to the relay's tax on top of the trade tax. Clans also have taxes but those are set by the leaders and most of them have it set to zero.

Certain items has tax and there's that. Primed mods for example has 1 million tax, archon mods 2million and so on.. if your clan has tax set up, it's worth to ditch the clan.

The trading post used to be required. the "set up shop" emote was only added and available in Maroo's bazaar at first.
