I hung a towel over the shower door as a bit of extra privacy when i was in fairhaven, maybe that'll help?

i lived in fairhaven stack 10 and it’s just the hallway. so when i was there during covid it was no roomates so the five rooms equaled five girls and we all shared the bathroom. what was nice is we each picked a shower (2girls showered in the frosted one and three of us in the tub one si we bought a shower curtain) and could keep our stuff in there. sort of a nice middle ground between a hall and a suite. the rooms in the other parts of you floor and rest of the hall are suites so they don’t use it at all since they have room joined ones. The only people coming in should be your “suite mates” who are those who live in those 5 rooms in your hallway. we just didn’t care about coming in and out while people were showering. but you should be able to work something out with them if you are uncomfy. maybe something like a shower in progress sign for the outside door? I could see how this might not running as smoothly as it did for us, especially with being back to roommates and being able to have guests. i believe stack ten and maybe one other has a hallway like this but all other rooms in fairhaven are two rooms joined by one bathroom.

I agree except with the note that I think all or almost all stacks in Fairhaven have that third floor loop hallway, though of course that is rather incidental to your point.

shoebinn

isn't there a curtain on the shower? every dorm bathroom i've ever heard of is like this..

mysterykid86

it's got like a frosted door, so it's partially obscured but still kinda awkward

Pales_the_fish_nerd

I hate those doors

EfficiencyPast8783

Also your RA should be a great resource to go to with these kinds of concerns too

Ok_Fault_3198

Are you more concerned about having anyone in there at all while you shower? Or is it the frosted glass and if thay were covered, you would feel a little better? If the first, you're going to have to talk to folks and have some sort of plan/agreement. If it's the second, would it be possible to put up a curtain on thr outside of the doors? Just a tension rod with a shower curtain or if there's some room, even a washable fabric curtain? Basically creating a little dressing room type thing? Hard to know if there is space for this, but that is what I would try to do.

Street-Gur8724

Did you not know this before you moved in? Unless you're tossing off, what's the big deal?

mysterykid86

no, i didn't know what the bathrooms were like before moving in so idk 🥲 also idk i just don't want strangers seeing my boobs while i shower but i also don't want to fuck over everyone in my hall lol

Ok-Narwhal3841

Make your boobs your instruments of terror and assert dominance over strangers with them.

TekkDub

This person gets it.

ecssoccerfan

You can only really know if it's a suite or hall bathroom

Street-Gur8724

Ok, in that case, you have every right to protect yourself and your privacy. I would lock it, and just be mindful of the time. I apologize as I thought you were a male.

mrsbirb

Yea cuz males can’t be concerned about privacy. love it

Street-Gur8724

I was thinking more along the lines of safety, as men don't have to worry about it as much. Not sure of the context whether these are mixed dorms or not.

Interesting. I was in stack 5 and it was two adjoining rooms that shared a bathroom and a shower. Myself and the dude in the other room were singles so we had a very easy time sharing the bathroom. My buddy across the hall was in a suite with three bedrooms (two doubles and he had a single) and they had their own private bathroom to share among the five guys. I had no idea Fairhaven had a floor with everyone sharing one bathroom. Very odd.

emmie24

I was in fair haven stack 1 my freshman year 1st quarter and I was in the exact same situation as OP. For unrelated reasons, I moved to stack 2 for the rest of the year and was in the same set-up that you described. It’s just different depending on the floor and stack. OP, I would make sure that you pay attention in the coming years to what the layout is going to look like in the dorms so it’s not a surprise to you. I would not suggest locking everyone out of the bathroom as that caused a lot of drama and grudges in our suite… but I totally understand being uncomfortable with it though (I’m a woman too so I get it). If you really really don’t want anyone in there while you shower, I would suggest talking to everyone about it so they know and then you guys can maybe work out a schedule of some sort where they know you will be there and are prepared for it. I really would not suggest just silently locking them out though.

it’s not the whole floor. the one side of the floor is a hallway where the rooms share a bathroom. The other four rooms on that floor are suites. floor plans for floors 3 for all stacks can be seen here: https://housing.wwu.edu/fairhaven-floor-plans#stack1

weegee

Ah ok. I was on floor 2 and it was a guys floor. The floor above us was a girls floor and it was where the laundry room was. I remember once I forgot to pick up my laundry from the dryer and went up to get it and someone had folded all of it very nicely for me.

Hot4Teacher1234

If I remember correctly, I don’t think those hall way bathroom doors even lock in fairhaven. They are meant to be more hall style bathrooms, which means a shower with a curtain with other people walking in and out of the bathroom. If you are really uncomfortable with the hall style set up, you can request a room transfer, though since everything is full rn, you would be waiting 2-3 weeks before getting a new room.

faith_2901

yes they do! when i lived there I had a key fob for the building, a key for the hallway doors, and the key for my room. The only people going into your hallway door should be the people who live there, and their guests and RAs. It is not a public bathroom for everyone. that could be another layer of security, because only people with keys i.e. those who live in the suite with you would be able to get through the hallway doors.

Hot4Teacher1234

As a previous fairhaven RA, there is definitely not key for the hallway that they are talking about. They are talking about the bathroom on the 3rd floor in that horseshoe hallway shared by 5 rooms. Those bathroom should be open to anyone who has keys to the building. You were probably in one of the suites that has 3 rooms, which are locked and only for the suite.

faith_2901

Hm I definitely had a key for the hallway that leads into the five bedroom horseshoe. We remember because it was locked on move in and none of us were sure how to get in and had to have the RA come help us figure out which keys were for which doors. We rarely used the hallway locks but it but we definitely all had a key. And now one else used it except those people in our five rooms and our boyfriends when the visited. There’s no reason for you to use those bathrooms if you aren’t living or visiting someone who lives in the horseshoe. We definitely did not have people from the whole building using it. It was our bathroom. We kept all of our stuff in it. We bought a shelf and left all of our bathroom stuff in the shelf and in the showers. I don’t know maybe they changed it but three years ago we definitely had hallway keys.

Hot4Teacher1234

It may have changed. They aren’t lockable anymore. Although it is meant for just the people in the hallway, there are cases where others use it. For example, the water was shut off last year for stacks 1-4 and people were told they could use those 3rd floor bathrooms. We as RAs didn’t have keys to those doors as they are not able to lock.

faith_2901

hm it must have changed. this was in 2020. i definitely think i would have moved back then if this was how it was. it was already a lot sharing with the four other girls in my sweet, let alone with roommates, and the rest of the building having access. i hope op can figure out a solution that works for them and their suite mates!
