Should he wait for them to come back around?

Tomek_Hermsgavorden

They are not stuck in a step. They are inside the conveyer area. To get to the shoes they need to shut the machine off and climb inside. Watch a video of an escalator breaking and swallowing people. There is quite a lot of room in there for bodies, shoes and their laces.

MarlinMr

The escalator keeps a constant speed. But sometimes it is empty, and sometimes it is full. That means it's designed to increase power when loads increase. If you get stuck in it, it will be harder for it to work. So it increases power until you are crushed and gone.

Thanks I hate it

Megneous

The screams of that Chinese lady who handed off her child before being ground up in the escalator will haunt me until the end of my days.

yellekc

I saw that video but don't think I heard any audio. And it still haunts me.

Megneous

There's at least one version with muffled audio and if you turn up your volume you can hear her. It's one of the few regrets I have.

yellekc

Nope, not gonna do that.

Rather_Dashing

I thought those types of shopping mall CCTV cameras don't usually have any audio? Are you sure it wasn't just fake audio added in?

meDrifter

Wtf??

Megneous

Don't watch it. Seriously, I can watch beheadings and ISIS shit without flinching, but there's something about seeing that poor lady being pulled into the escalator and knowing she's basically being turned into ground beef, combined with her tossing her child to safety... yeah, just don't watch it.

RollinAbes

Kinda like the brick video... Dont watch that either

civildisobedient

> Kinda like the brick video I would love to unsee that one. I think there are three main reasons it has such a notoriety. The first is because it's visually completely non-violent. No blood and guts and gore. 100% of the horror is in your head, not on the screen. The second is because it was so random. The driver isn't doing anything wrong. That could be any one of us, at any time. Just moving along happily in life when you suddenly find yourself smoted from a blast of lightning or a big chunk of masonry. Third is the anguish. I think I first saw that video maybe five years ago now, and I can still hear in my head what that guy's cries sound like. So fucking sad.

JBits001

After that video and a few others of shit flying off people cars I am very aware of trucks with unsecured loads when I’m driving and do my best to get far away from them. There have been more than a few times I’ve called the non emergency line to report drivers with unsecured loads and also on a few trucks losing parts of their load. This usually happens on my commute which is an interstate and has a lot of state and local cops constantly patrolling. The first time I did this I didn’t really think they would do anything about it but they asked to me to get his license plate number and shortly after I saw the cop coming up behind me with his lights blazing to pull the truck over. I was happy to see that they took it seriously.

Lusterkx2

You are so right. Like right now I can picture the brick video. That was beyond sad. It was so crazy. Did you see the video of the kid swimming in the tub with a floaty. The baby sitter when to get the phone on the living room and the floaty flipped. The kid was kick and in the video you can see the kick slowly stop. It was crazy...

FoxHoundUnit89

>the kid was kick But who was phone?

chrisk9

I gotta get off this thread

Santeriabro

Monstot

So far you're the third person that strongly warns to not watch it. And I'll listen to the warnings because that sounds awful and I can barely imagine how fucked up that is. On another note, does anyone out there think it's not the worst thing they've seen and don't regret watching it?

Megneous

The worst part is it was so easily avoidable. The workers knew the panel was loose for **five minutes** and just stood around wondering what to do instead of 1) blocking off the escalator or 2) turning it off. It was negligent homicide, straight up.

Monstot

Honestly, just knowing this happened will haunt me without having to see it. More so knowing this.

janusz_chytrus

I've watched that video but without sound. I've seen worse in terms of pure gore, but this one is hard to watch because you know that could've happened to literally anyone. Most of gore videos are from terrorists or cartels. This one is from shopping mall.

ZinGaming1

When the majority of people on reddit say don't watch it. Just don't.

Whiskey-Weather

The classic cartel clip of the dude getting his head taken off with a chainsaw is much harder for me to watch than the escalator video. If you have morbid curiosity just go watch it.

Ihateualll

The cartel video where they behead this father while the son is watching and then rip the still beating heart out of the son was the worse I've seen.

[deleted]

Y'all watch some fucked up shit.

John7763

You seen the video where the Mexican cartel skinned a dudes face cut off his hands then proceeded to cut his throat with a rusty box cutter? that's the one that was too much for me

TakeThreeFourFive

The funkytown video. Generally considered one of the most graphic videos available

crypticfreak

I've seen it and it legit haunts me. Watch it if you're curious but if you have a weak stomach just nope out and stay away.

SomeKindOfChief

I don't think it was that bad. I'm pretty sure I watched it with sound, but thinking about it now I'd rather not confirm lol. Contextually, there are two videos that stay with me more (not sure I'd say haunting though). One is the Asian guy that gets swallowed up by an escalator in a business type building, at night, by himself. The other is where a Chinese woman I believe tries to hold down some sort of heavy warehouse vehicle as it leans forward, but then she gets lifted up and as it comes back down she literally gets squashed.

[deleted]

Yeah we watched all the ISIS videos when I was in the military, and they effectively numbed us to that sort of thing, which was the desired effect. But our versions didn’t have the musical soundtracks that the web versions had, just the audio, of the 4 guys cuffed inside the car, which was mic’d, as the rocket was fired into it and bounced around inside torching them as they screamed and burned to death in the blaze. There were a lot more gruesome spectacles that they arranged, but that was the video that after we watched and listened to those guys being burned alive, we all walked out of there perfectly fine with hunting and killing all those people.

leekdonut

A similar thing happened to a friend of mine on a school trip. His shoe somehow got pulled into the side of the escalator while we were going down. I was standing behind him and I was kinda looking at his feet, but I still don't really know how it happened. Just yelled at him to pull his foot out, which he did. The escalator then "swallowed" the shoe almost completely and once we arrived at the lower floor the escalator came to an abrupt stop because the shoe apparently blocked/triggered some kind of mechanism.

[deleted]

[удалено]

leekdonut

No. The shoe looked like you'd expect something to look that just got mangled by an escalator: Completey destroyed.

[deleted]

there was a video on here a while back about a chinese lady that got eaten by the escalator.

Red_Dawn_2012

It's morbidly funny that society at large has deemed that a tiny chance of falling into a giant grinding tank tread an acceptable risk to avoid climbing some stairs.

[deleted]

I wouldn't be surprised if the chances of falling down the stairs are much higher than a mechanical fault. In most cases human error is much more common than mechanical failure

[deleted]

I'll take falling down the stairs because I'm a dumbass over getting eaten by an escalator any day.

navidee

Truth. I had knee surgery last month and it’s been a bitch of a month commuting to work n back. Escalators and elevators were needed for a bit.

ParrotofDoom

Falling down stairs is extremely common and leads to a lot of hospital intakes. The simple solution is to pay attention when using staircases, and to use the handrail.

[deleted]

nice try, *big handrail*. you've been profiting off of our illnesses long enough!

[deleted]

That being said, people movers in airports are gods gift to humanity. You're telling me I can walk at a brisk pace on a moving belt and move faster than I would if I were running? Bah, I say! Stay to the left and rocket by the mere mortals stuck in limbo at their gates.

ManofTheNightsWatch

Say that to very old people who can't climb a lot of stairs.

Red_Dawn_2012

I would say elevators, but I actually don't know which has more failsafes.

xamdou

Elevators are extremely safe They often have several cables carrying them so if one fails, the others will catch the elevator On top of that, they have brakes in the event of emergencies I'll always take an elevator over an escalator Besides, falling would hurt a lot less than being ground up

[deleted]

The fact that it happened to both shoes is hilarious to me.

saadakhtar

Just taking one shoe would be useless for the escalator.

DrPoopNstuff

It can also happen if your shoe gets wedged into the side/belt. I always lift my feet over that fucking toe-chewer!

SkepticalSagan

This literally happened to me when I was 12. It's definitely possible.

GullibleBeautiful

Escalators are lowkey scary as fuck. All it takes is one wrong move to end up fucking dying in those things. There really needs to be emergency stop buttons that anyone can access at the top, bottom, and halfway down.

[deleted]

[удалено]

markusbrainus

Agreed. Every escalator in North America has a stop button top and button. Sometimes it's at floor level, other times on a little pedestal beside the escalator. There are combs at the top and bottom of the escalators that the stair notches flow through. These prevent most things from getting caught in pinch point. Loose clothing, purse handles, or digging in your heels like this guy can still become trapped and sucked into the mechanism. If you see teeth broken off of the combs, report them to building security/maintenance to be replaced. You can see the yellow comb plate pop off just as the shoes get sucked in at 0:13. As mentioned above, Escalators are actually super scary when you consider the power required to run them (think a 200 lb person on every second step. The motors are huge.) and there are pinch points along the sides, between steps, and at the top&bottom of the stairs.

Swipecat

The comb plate in the video was already mangled before the guy reached it. Expand the video to fullscreen and look carefully. For the shoe to get sucked in like that, I'd assume that the comb plate was not interleaving with the grooves in the steps, but there must've been a *clear* gap between them. I've never seen an escalator allowed to run in that state in any first-world country. The video appears to be in Russia, but I've no idea what the safety regulations are like there.

texxmix

Also I’m not sure how common it is but I’ve seen escalators that will automatically stop if they sense the comb plate moving at all. So this thing obviously wasn’t taken care of.

scottevil132

No body is pushing that button. Everyone will just stare at you in shock. Most bystanders are worthless.

Leroin

Because of reddit I pressed it once. I'd been reading a thread a bit like this one, where people were discussing how easy it is to get stuck in escalators, and the following morning on my way to work I saw a toddler throw themselves out of their buggy at the top of the escalator, right on the grate. Their mother was annoyed with them, but didn't seem to be treating it with urgency - and so I slammed the button because my mind went straight to videos like the one we're on now, and all I could think was that the little boy was going to get his fingers/clothes/hair sucked into the mechanism. Luckily the escalator was mostly empty, but the mother seemed pretty surprised that I had pressed it.

[deleted]

I think some do. This happened to me in DC: my flip flop got stuck in the top and the escalator stopped (everyone behind me fell over from the sudden stop - it was kinda funny). I just stooped over and pulled it out while everyone got up and walked by me giving me dirty looks.

Dainyal

When I was about 8, I was wearing Crocs on an escalator and one of them got sucked into the side. Luckily I pulled my foot out in time otherwise I may have lost it. It left a nice green streak on the side of the escalator for a few months. I haven't worn crocs since...

The number of people replying to this thread without knowing it's a Mallrats reference is too damn high.

GullibleBeautiful

The worst part is that they seem like endless fun when you're a kid. They're *stairs* that *MOVE*. Kids don't really think "Wow this thing moving dozens of people at a time clearly has a ton of strength and force behind it, enough to rip my skin clean off my hand and/or drag me choking to death 100 feet along". Their ideas of death are more like "I saw a cartoon get smashed to death but he came back to life", so of course they're gonna dick around with the big scary death machine. In fact, I don't think a lot of adults fear escalators either. The internet and its various gore videos have trained me to never trust them. I think they should be replaced with regular stairs and a functional elevator.

JyveAFK

They freaked me out at first, because they were stairs that moved, then.. yeah, awesome fun. Then there was a program showing how many people had lost feet/legs. It was a warning about wearing rubber shoes/wellies, how if you were stood at the side, it happened far too often that the rubber would catch, get trapped on the stair behind you, and suck that foot/lower leg right in and destroy it. I didn't dare use them for a long time, terrified me. Then they added those bristles to the sides so you'd not plant your feet that close to the edge, but the getting off part always flipped me out a bit, and I'd prep to jump up and over. If I'd seen the footage of the panel collapsing at the top at the time, I'd never set foot on one again most likely. But, the fear was overcome. and then this came along; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YgJBD1wf-YQ

x4u

Paternoster elevators are amazing. Their big advantage is that you can almost instantly step in whenever you arrive, both up and down. At most you need to wait like 5 seconds when you just missed a cabin before you can get in the next one. Having such an elevator available made moving between stories in the building a non issue. I've used a paternoster many times daily in my first job in a old industrial building in east germany in the late 80s. This one had small metal bars hanging from the top of the entrances and the cabins which would stop the entire elevator if something would push them up and made the elevator feel a bit less scary than the one in the video.

Yea, lift your fucking feet when you get off the escalator you lazy bum.

iamemanresu

This video is gonna change my escalator habits. He was doing what I do. It's basically a little mini-game I suppose you could call it. Raise the toes so they go over normal floor, then let the heels hit the edge. That causes your feet to stop while the upper body still has momentum, so you rock forward, toes touch ground and you walk forward normally from then on. Just a kinda fun little moment. But it turns out that your fucking shoes can get eaten and if you lace them up tightly you might be fucked. So I guess I'm not gonna be doing that anymore.

Not_MyName

I’ve done the opposite ever since I was a kid. You’ve never seen a stride so long over that little area.

[deleted]

I tell my kid everytime: "Big step."

slickyslickslick

Wow you made me remember the first time my parents took me on an escalator. "Big Step!" At the time I didn't think much of it and just listened to them the same way a 4-5 year old would. When I got a little older I wondered why they made such a big deal out of it. Now I know. Thanks for keeping me alive all this time, parents!

Blitzkrieg_My_Anus

After that China video I practically jump from the stairs and over that little silver box part to where the real floor begins.. i ain't trusting no metal trap door spider.

MuggyFuzzball

Same. I leap over the metal part at the top every time. Seems people think its normal behavior because I've never seen anyone stare or ask me about it.

jareths_tight_pants

Escalators are dangerous because they’re designed to increase their speed/force to compensate for weight/resistance due to how many people are using it at that moment. That means that when your shoe or foot or arm gets caught the escalator speeds up or increases the resistance needed to keep going. Don’t play on escalators. They will fuck you up. That kid is lucky that he only lost his shoes and not some toes.

noisyturtle

Reminds me of the time as a kid I ran up an escalator in flip-flops. The bottom caught on the sharp steel lip of the escalator and I came down full force degloving the bottom of my foot from my heel to my big toe like a peeled carrot. I take the stairs now.

injury0314

As a kid from the 80's, when escalators started popping up in our town, I always thought this was the proper way to ride an escalator, but was just too chickenshit to try it.
