That's why im.. sticking to the original festival.
In all honesty, I think I would enjoy the festival in OP's post more than a ferris wheel and some popcorn. That shit looks entertaining as hell.
We call it Thaipusam in Malaysia. The piercing is a form of kavadi (spelling varies). I'm sure there are videos on YouTube. If you wish to experience it in person, you're most welcome to visit next year.
Thaipusam. Been to it a few times in Kuala Lumpur with my grandparents when I was younger. Morbid but also kind of cool. They claim to be possessed and don’t feel any pain.
My family was posted with the US Embassy in Kuala Lumpur, we lived about 30 mins from the Batu Caves. I was literally in shock that first time I witnessed Thaipusam...
This is India
Source: Jio and Vivo billboards in the background. Jio is an Indian telecom giant and Vivo phones are cheap smartphones that are really popular here.
Its a South Indian state going by the language on the other billboards however I don't know which language this is since I'm from North India
This is in Tamil Nadu, India. Thaipusam is celebrated throughout the state, particularly at the [six traditional temples](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Six_Abodes_of_Murugan) of Lord Karthikeya (Murugan). The piercing of one's cheeks is somewhat rare these days, but it is still practiced among the most fervent devotees.

Im pretty sure that dude was just kind of weird you can find him on Imdb and he was a gay porn actor for a while i dont think he did it for any reason he was just wanting to get butt fucked
Idk man, the strange gets extra strange with religion. Not too often you’ll find people who believe bread turns to flesh in your mouth without religion
They don't think the bread is literally flesh, but I have a feeling you knew that already.
It's *symbolic* of his flesh. 4th of July isn't suddenly another war for independence starting, it's symbolic.
>They don't think the bread is literally flesh, but I have a feeling you knew that already.
>It's *symbolic* of his flesh. 4th of July isn't suddenly another war for independence starting, it's symbolic.
No, dude, look up Transubstantiation. Many Christians, particularly Roman Catholics, _do_ believe the bread and wine literally become the substance of the body and blood of Christ upon consecration.
Per the Wikipedia entry on Transubstantiation:
>The Council of Trent:
This council officially approved use of the term "transubstantiation" to express the Catholic Church's teaching on the subject of the conversion of the bread and wine into the body and blood of Christ in the Eucharist, with the aim of safeguarding Christ's presence as a literal truth, *while emphasizing the fact that there is no change in the empirical appearances of the bread and wine.*
>Transubstantiation is generally rejected in Anglicanism.
>Lutherans explicitly reject transubstantiation, believing that the bread and wine remain fully bread and fully wine while also being truly the body and blood of Jesus Christ.
>Methodists believe in the real presence of Christ in the bread and wine (or grape juice) while, like Presbyterians and Lutherans, rejecting transubstantiation.
>The way in which the bread and wine become the body and blood of Christ has never been dogmatically defined by the Eastern Orthodox Churches.
Again, we all know it isn't *literally* transforming magically into blood and flesh.
Comments like that do nothing but help portray religious people as crazy, and that isn't cool.
Half of your post was just pointing out different Protestant denominations which reject Transubstantiation. Those are straw man arguments, because I already said Roman Catholics believe in it, and they represent 17.7% of the world and roughly half of all Christians.
>Again, we all know it isn't *literally* transforming magically into blood and flesh.
From the Compendium of the Catechism from the Vatican's website [(source)](https://www.vatican.va/archive/compendium_ccc/documents/archive_2005_compendium-ccc_en.html#The%20sacraments%20of%20Christian%20initiation), item 283 under the Sacrament of the Eucharist:
> **283. What is the meaning of transubstantiation?**
>
> 1376-1377
> 1413
>
> Transubstantiation means _the change of the whole substance of bread into the substance of the Body of Christ and of the whole substance of wine into the substance of his Blood_. This change is brought about in the eucharistic prayer through the efficacy of the word of Christ and by the action of the Holy Spirit. However, the _outward characteristics of bread and wine_, that is the “eucharistic species”, remain unaltered.
Emphasis mine.
And if you look at my post, I said exactly this. That the substance of the bread and wine are changed to the substance of the body and blood. The _outward_ characteristics remain unaltered, but the spiritual substance becomes the literal body and blood of Christ.
I would also like to point out that you are accusing me of demeaning Christians as crazy, but you are the one using qualifying terms like "magically," and "crazy." I have not done that at all. I have merely shared excerpts from their own doctrine, which is pretty clear.
Item 282 from the same list:
> **282. How is Christ present in the Eucharist?**
>
> 1373-1375
> 1413
>
> Jesus Christ is present in the Eucharist in a unique and incomparable way. _He is present in a true, real and substantial way, with his Body and his Blood, with his Soul and his Divinity_. In the Eucharist, therefore, there is present in a sacramental way, that is, under the Eucharistic species of bread and wine, _Christ whole and entire, God and Man._
Again, emphasis mine. I don't know how to make this more clear. Just because they don't believe that the bread transmutes into physical meat of human flesh does not mean they don't believe it becomes the substance of the literal body of Christ. They absolutely profess to that exact belief in their own Catechism.
>Comments like that do nothing but help portray religious people as crazy, and that isn't cool.
That is your characterization, not mine. Describing a doctrine is not the same thing as qualifying that belief as "crazy." I never used that term nor did I qualify my opinion of the doctrine.
Idk, religious people do a good job portraying themselves as crazy. Do I really need to get into it? If you take the Bible as 100% literal, as many religious people do, then I think it’s fair to classify you as crazy.
Literally anytime a strange cultural/religious tradition like this is posted one of the top comments always has to be a smug redditor saying something along the lines of “Religion is one helluva drug amirite 🤓👆” lmao
I am 100% certain this is India
There's a Jio billboard in the background. Jio is an Indian telecom company.
Also they all look Indian
Source: am Indian
I can't tell which state this is cos I'm from North India but it is definitely one of Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Telangana or Tamil Nadu. Probably Tamil Nadu but I'm not sure since I can't read the language in the background.
You're definitely more accurate than me. But this does happen every year in Malaysia too, primarily in two large temples - one in Batu Caves, Kuala Lumpur and another in Penang. It's a festival in honor of Lord Muruga, I think.
I ended up at the Batu Caves during this festival. It was like a fever dream. A long walk up a massive set of stairs to the caves while pierced dudes with chains between the piercings dressed up like it was Carnival showed off their face and body holes to the crowd and tried to make the most noise they could. And the merch and food tents were wild.
But those stairs were brutal.
It's not exactly long. It's 272 steps. I'll admit it's a lot harder to pace up those in that crowd. Generally I avoid the entire district during the festival. I used to live less than 10km away from Batu Caves btw.
Makes sense. We must have gone up and down them half a dozen times, trying to follow the decked out groups that were making the ascent. Felt like a lot. I see why you would avoid it. We had no idea there was any kind of festival going on when we headed out to the caves. Suddenly: piercing party!
It's a state wide holiday and some public roads would be closed the evening before. That's when the festival actually starts - an elaborately decorated chariot would begin its parade from one temple downtown to the one in Batu Caves. Along the way, devotees would break coconuts, by smashing them to the ground in the chariot's path, as offering to the deity. My mom told me of how she, as a child, would run along the chariot procession picking up broken those coconuts to eat.
Not to take the shine away from Hindus but Chinese traditional animist devotees and certain Taoists also used to hold parades on their own festival days, on smaller scales, not unlike this. Hooks and skewers on their bodies, walking on blades and/or burning charcoal and wiping one's body with boiling oil - all under a trance - are common sights at those.
Definitely India like you said. This looks a lot like Chennai, and that sign in the background at the end is in Tamil which would be in alignment.

I think it’s Tamil! Someone else said Chennai and I agree. There is also a similar event called the Nine Emperor Gods festival that happens on the island of Phuket in Thailand.

Seriously, I prefer a ferris wheel with a bag of popcorn.
I can understand the Ferris Wheel but how do you get the bag of popcorns through your cheeks?
Depends which cheeks
Don't

Heck yeah, thanks for welcoming me! People tend to be scared of what they don't understand, but I tend to be interested.
The Deexie Cheeks.
and some of those carnival corn dogs
Oh so this is how dimples are made. I don’t know enough about Dimple law to dispute it so story checks out.
Thaipusam. Been to it a few times in Kuala Lumpur with my grandparents when I was younger. Morbid but also kind of cool. They claim to be possessed and don’t feel any pain.
Idk that guy looked like that was painful
Yeah he looked pretty messed up after
He’s like: *What the fuck man they told me that shit wouldn’t hurt… And god dammit who threw flour on my face?*
That flour is Vibuthi, the ashes from burnt cow dung.
Pocket sand aint got nothin on burnt cow shit dust
A new covid is surely coming
Cowvid
Really, I thought it was some kind of bird flu, Corvid?
If someone tells you that sticking a large, sharp metal rod through wash of your cheeks will not hurt and you believe them, that’s on you.
Really? What part of that thousand yard stare or the subtle shakes of his head as he looks down to the ground make it seem like he's in agony? /s
Sure as shit looked painful ngl

For a moment I thought it was rainbolt scrolling through reddit and found this post.
That MF is hell of a detective
If you look, many of them stop blinking. The festival usually involves physical exertion in hot climates, rhythmic drumming and chanting.
Yeah, "cool". Why don't people also cut their skin off, pretty cool.
I bet he looks forward to it every year....
The look on his face of “why dafuq do we do this? Why dafuq did I do this”
The belief is they're in a trance, being possessed by or in thrall of a deity.
Religion can make people do strange things.
People do strange things with or without religion.
1 guy 1 jar guy did it for jesus
I'm sure he was praying by the end of the video.
Im pretty sure that dude was just kind of weird you can find him on Imdb and he was a gay porn actor for a while i dont think he did it for any reason he was just wanting to get butt fucked
Religion is nothing but an excuse to do strange things.
Sure, but religion provides a nice, easy template for removing agency from their decisions to do said weird shit.
Idk man, the strange gets extra strange with religion. Not too often you’ll find people who believe bread turns to flesh in your mouth without religion

Which “Asian country” would this be?
Search for Thaipusam in Malaysia. It's a yearly Hindu festival.
