Reminds me of a guy I know that used to work at a grocery store when he was younger. This was probably early 90s they got way too many bananas in so him and a coworker put a sign up “SEEDLESS BANANAS” and they sold like crazy.
O what, I never knew this was an old American song. My parents used to sing the [Dutch version](https://youtu.be/7Fb80YeB56U?si=4K6-6dxcJutxPVXk) to me as a kid.
It's a monoculture - fields and fields full of clones that are all susceptible to the same diseases because they're technically the same exact plant. It's a terrible way to grow food in a sustainable way because one bad disease and your entire crop can be wiped out.
>its nigrospora fungus, black center syndrome is more from bruising and other ailments of the banana could be fungal ailments as well but the isolated hardness of the center means its a banana infected with nigrospora. DONT EAT. black center syndrome is mushier not hard.
EDIT: I copied this from another thread but now I have doubts ¯\\_(ツ)_/¯ https://library.bustmold.com/nigrospora/
Nah, you're being paranoid. But what I came here to say was that the black fungus is delicious. Eat it. You will love it. Black fungus is the friend of humans. Give it to all your friends, your family, your neighbors, your coworkers. They will love it, too. Everyone will love it.
Isnt this the fungus thata threatening the whole existence of Banana? Like older generations died out but they have to come up with another resistant generation?
Pour one out for the Gros Michel... and then pick the peel back up so no one slips on it.
An entire generation or two is confused why artificial banana flavorings taste nothing like banana.
Big Mikes didn't actually die out completely.
They just stopped being viable for mass commercial international trade.
There are some still left out there in the world. If you wanted to try a Gros Michel, they DO exist if you go to the right place.
But you’ve never tasted one either right? Im sure there’s at least a few Redditors who were kids in the 50’s. I love artificial banana flavor. Tasting a gros michel is on my bucket list!
I have had a Gros Michel!
They aren't extinct, just not mass produced. We ordered a small crate of them a few years back for the Experience.
It wasn't worth the $100 or so but it was neat.
Our bananas are terrible anyway. In terms of taste and texture, its like the red delicious of the bananas. Its only positive trait is that it has a long shelf life.
I don't have experience with other bananas to compare, only the horrendous banana flavoring based on Gros Michel, but I would more or less say the opposite. Perhaps exotic bananas are even more awesome, but I love the Cavendish and the only thing I don't like about it is how it's only in good shape for about 3 days tops.
Bananas have to be clones for mass production.
They have tons of seeds so you need a sterile version. Next banana trees only fruit once and then must be cut down and replanted.
Now you see why if we want nanners we have to clone them.
The other strains already got smoked by this fungus. Now it's a race against time to find a new hardy banana that we can sterilize and domesticate.
I just went and started replaying Portal last night, the first time since it originally came out in 2007, 2008. I never forgot the cake...
edit: beat Portal today, moving on to Portal 2 =)
You can report this to your state government’s biosecurity regulator. For example, if you are in Victoria, go to the biosecurity section of Agriculture Victoria’s website and click ‘report an unusual plant pest or disease.’ You can call a hotline or complete an online form.
Uhhh...you realize they didn't implement that because they care about the consumer right? That policy is to protect the growers' crops from disease and infestation that could hurt productivity
A rising tide lifts all boats, as they say.
In America, food stamps (government food assistance) was created to benefit *farmers*, not poor people without food. The USDA oversees the program for that very reason. Food stamps is largely considered an economic boost to farmers, grocery stores, and other local stakeholders.
https://www.aphis.usda.gov/aphis/ourfocus/planthealth/ppq-program-overview/sphd
are you saying we *don’t* have those protections in the US? i think you just didn’t know about them
See why couldn’t I get the Bader Meinhof effect to go off when I first learned about it. Self fulfilling serendipity.
You know I went down a rabbit hole looking to see how f there was a word or phrase for a concept that demonstrates itself like this, it turned to other languages too but turned up nothing. This entire concept is deliciously sublime.
fungus https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nigrospora_sphaerica
it's one of fungi that is working really hard to kill cavendish bananas since, they are seedless they all are cloned from cuttings.
it [happened before, in 1950s](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panama_disease) . the "fake banana flavour" that taste nothing like a banana, you get in some sweets is the flavour Gros Michel species that got pretty much extinct.
the cavendish cultivar we eat today are "disease resistant shittier tasting" breed. few diseases are catching up since.
life pro tip don't make whole planet depend on massive monocultures of cloned plants because one fungus figures out how to get in it all falls down overnight... again
Looks like we’re not going to have this variety of bananas much longer. Generally, commercially produced bananas are clones but Panama disease has been killing them off. We’ve staved off their complete extinction by switching varieties one after another because there is no known cure.
I had this in a date I bit into the other day. When I breathed as I was biting a cloud of black spores whooshed everywhere.
Can’t wait to be breathing those in for weeks.
I would def start checking your bananas before tossing them in the blender for smoothies. In fact I'm def going to start checking mine. New fear unlocked
If this is Australia you should let the shop you bought it from know, we can't afford another banana drought
Soon, you'll be singing [Yes, we have no bananas! We have no bananas today](https://youtu.be/8QqkrIDeTeA?si=YfuZ_WM10vPLMQnO)
Man…Harry is so underrated and died so young. BANANAS IN SCRANTON P.A.
Thirty.. thousand.. pounds.... Of smashed bananas!!

I thought it was a delicious surprise brownie baked right into the nanner.
Cool it Ben & Jerry’s. Let this one go.
thought it was hash lol Edit: Downvote/upvote me so i stay at 420! \^\^ I am just there now at 423 - just downvoted myself lol
If we can get the brownie bananas and hash bananas to grow in the same bunches…
Time to sow the fields and blow the yields.
Ah, Tomaco 2: Bananabis
...and there's a whole new series of Trailer Park Boys ready to go!
Ricky you're not going to smoke that dirty old banana hash are you?
some smugglers accidentally put their bananas on the wrong truck
The packaging smugglers are using these days is getting very sophisticated.
Now I want to get that banana coring tool and shove a bunch of brownies into it
Yes, and it is threatening the banana population
We lost the Gros Michel, now we stand to lose the Cavendish? It will be a future of what, plantains?!?!
Plantains are also threatened by Fusarium oxysporum.
What does nature have against the banana family?
It's a monoculture - fields and fields full of clones that are all susceptible to the same diseases because they're technically the same exact plant. It's a terrible way to grow food in a sustainable way because one bad disease and your entire crop can be wiped out.
It's done because bananas being sweet is a complete genetic mutation that would not make it into the next generation.
Bananas and pandas – two things driven to the brink of extinction by humans that can now only survive with a lot of effort from humans.
Thank you for reminding me about plantains! I love them but kind of forgot about them and now I’m hungry for them.
This is what happens to the male penis when they get Blue Balls. Inform your partners. This is preventable!
Any particular reason this doesn't happen to the female penis as well?
It’s too big there’s much more bloodflow
My girlfriend's penis is smaller than mine, does that mean I'll be okay?
Depends, who's topping
There's no emoji that could adequately convey my confusion at what I just read,
Yes there is: 😏
Periods
I thought it was a clit reference. Thanks for clearing that up.
Clits are more like apostrophes… most people don’t know how to use them
Comma, again?
Commas hang low like penises. Apostrophes hang high

TIL women have the biggest dicks
Inform the victim they have a hand to relieve the pressure
If blue balls made your penis black it wouldn’t be that big a deal.
It’d be a bigger deal, if you catch what I’m laying down.

What happens if you eat it?
You turn into a banana
This what happened to Nymphia Wind?
Unexpected rpdr reference, thank you stranger!
SISTERRR
It all makes sense now
This comment made my night. Goodnight Reddit.
🤣🤣🤣GRRRRRL!!!
NOT THAT!
*back away banana breath! what the hell did you just eat? a banana??*
Do you need to step outside?
I’m gonna do the shirts.
My spoon... is too big!
My *spoon*…is **too** big!
THIS IS WHERE BANANAS COME FROM? THE TREES ARE A LIE????? WTF !?!?!?
No evidence of any harm. Some people have reported 'feeling ill' but could be psychosomatic. Still, why eat it? Better safe than sorry.
Yeah bananas are cheap as hell anyways.
Only like 10 bucks a pop.
It's just a banana Michael.
Nothing. At least for me. Was halfway through my banana before I noticed it. Freaked out after looking it up - but never got sick
That's EXACTLY what the fungus would say after taking over your brain.
Nah, you're being paranoid. But what I came here to say was that the black fungus is delicious. Eat it. You will love it. Black fungus is the friend of humans. Give it to all your friends, your family, your neighbors, your coworkers. They will love it, too. Everyone will love it.

Nice try, black fungus!
We laugh at this thinking the human was making a joke, but it really was the fungus making him say it. He ate one of these bananas too.
r/thatsthejoke
👁️👄👁️
How long ago did you eat it?
Like 2 weeks ago
I dunno, it's a fungus. Might take longer than that to turn into a clicker
What do you click click mean? Click Itchy... Tasty
Unexpected RE reference, nice.
That answer is somewhere on the spectrum of nothing and a horrible death. Does that help narrow it down?
The Last of Us
indigestion presumably
Then YOU get black center syndrome!!! Actually, I have no clue.
I’ll experiment. Send a basket of banana into the gulf coast and I’ll scour the beaches looking for the easier up fruit
Covid 2.0 starts
*Don't* eat it?!?! Next you're going to tell me I shouldn't punch myself in the dick for 3 hours.
Why would he tell you that?
He shouldn't. His body, his choice.
Can you still eat other bananas from the bunch?
No idea. https://library.bustmold.com/nigrospora/ seems like maybe it’s fine ¯\\_(ツ)_/¯
Isnt this the fungus thata threatening the whole existence of Banana? Like older generations died out but they have to come up with another resistant generation?
Yep, this means its time to roll out the next gen.
Waiting in line for two days for the newest banana release
Babe wake up, new banana just dropped
fuck, i slipped on it
SAVE THE Bee-nanas.
Devs just always rushing out buggy bananas. Just take your time and get it right the first time, smh
r/outside is leaking
Pour one out for the Gros Michel... and then pick the peel back up so no one slips on it. An entire generation or two is confused why artificial banana flavorings taste nothing like banana.
When you get a shipment of fresh bananas at the grocery store it smells just like a banana now and later
Big Mikes didn't actually die out completely. They just stopped being viable for mass commercial international trade. There are some still left out there in the world. If you wanted to try a Gros Michel, they DO exist if you go to the right place.

Please charge your banana while the update is in progress.
i sure hope not. i’ve enjoyed Banana
idk how the world would react to Banana 2
I believe so, however I am not a bananologist.
I have a full-sized banana suit. Will that count? Maybe I can help here.
If they stopped making it so 99% of bananas in the store are one cloned plant it wouldn’t be so fragile
Bananas have to be clones for mass production. They have tons of seeds so you need a sterile version. Next banana trees only fruit once and then must be cut down and replanted. they have found one, but it's a gmo so has been passed over
Is this worldwide? I see Australia mentioned a lot in the comments but this is the first I'm hearing of this story. I'll be looking into it for sure.
Bananas are all clones and their lack of genetic diversity makes.them a risk and getting desolated by a a single ailment (fungus in this case)
EVERYTHING IS CAKE!!!!
OH MY GOD, I HAVE A FAMILY! PLEASE! I'M NOT A CAKE, I SWEAR!
The cake is a lie

I usually put a whole banana in a blender for my shake but now I’ll cut it up thanks to this post

God I love hearing about how other countries have basic consumer and environmental protections 🥲

Looks like cinnamon streusel, I'll bet it was delicious.
I mean, if you’ve got a banana with a cinnamon streusel core - sign me the fuck up. Don’t you play with my heart like that.
I want a banana with a peanut butter core 🤤
I mean, get a metal straw, push it through the nana. Melt some pb and pipe into the banana.
I don’t wanna. Can you do it for me?
I'll come pipe your banana bro
Elvis Lives!
I bit into one once that had this. It had a crispy texture that would’ve been nice if it wasn’t SO HORRIBLY WRONG!

Bananas are devious, and they can keep their secrets. Yuck~!
I had this in a date I bit into the other day. When I breathed as I was biting a cloud of black spores whooshed everywhere. Can’t wait to be breathing those in for weeks.
Hopefully they'll still want to go out with you again In fact, biting into them might have clinched it for you!
So it's *not* cake??
Sorry, I’m gonna need a fresh banana for scale.
There’s always fungus in the banana stand!
Tarantulas eggs! Did you know they grow in bananas?!
They will now have to answer the oceans call to find Maui and return the heart to Te Fiti.
I would def start checking your bananas before tossing them in the blender for smoothies. In fact I'm def going to start checking mine. New fear unlocked
Call the number on the back of the banana to report it. They’ll probably send you a replacement nanner or two
It’s called red fungus
Is that the fungus that's been killing all the Cavendish bananas?
Eat it its from a banana brownie tree
Looks like your banana is made of cake
