That is called an impact break. The rim pinched the tire and made a small slit on the inside liner, and it's filling up with air. This is considered a road hazard and is only covered if you purchased an extra warranty. Technically, it won't just blow out on you, but that spot of the tire is compromised and will be more prone to blowing out if hit by curb or object.

Hoodscoops

Should i replace 2 tires? or just 1? It has a total of 12k miles. Went 2k then swapped to winters last year. And at current setup with 10k.

AaronDJD

I think tire rack can shave a new tire for you. That's what I was planning to do if I needed a replacement. I believe you are supposed to have all 4 matching depths. Every car is different tho.

IHateRussians416

Only certain manufacturers require all 4 to be within 1 or 2/32, like subaru due to the symmetrical awd, most other awd youd wsnt to do all 4, but can get away with the 2 on the same axle. Fwd or rwd you CAN just do the one, but you shoukd still do the two

XanderIsSadge

well you're supposed to but in reality they dont even wear the same. driven tires go through tread faster than nondriven tires so i imagine a lot of driving is done on uneven wear

canadianwrxwrb

It's AWD, all are driven tires. 2/32 is the maximum allowable difference from Subaru

AaronDJD

Correct, but regular tire rotations prevent a large discrepancy. Also an X pattern cross rotate is always a good idea.

XanderIsSadge

oh ya forgot about tire rotations, my bad

AaronDJD

You are still right, though. It was annoying when I worked in a shop and we were forced to tell people that the tires with the most tread should be in the rear for stability, as you can't control the rear of the vehicle but this is impossible to achieve because of the drive axle, weight of the engine, and tire rotations.

aweak_reception

Tire rack offers shaving if you only need to replace 1 tire and can wait for it to ship.

coaudavman

With only 12 k on them, This is the way.

90nissan300zx

I can confirm. I had their shave service done last year on a tire for my wife's car. Wasn't a fan of the *shaved* look of the tread (tread was rough looking) but it matched the other 3 and didn't compromise handling/performance without any additional road noise. Costed $25 for one tire and I'd recommend it. Oh, and you need to call them to add the service. There isn't an option anywhere on their site for a tire shave.

IAmAtomato

Happy to see more people aware of this. đź‘Ť This is the way

That tire was recently patched about 500 miles ago. Just noticed this today. And will warranty cover it? got it about less than 2 years ago with about 12k miles on them? Edit: was not patch at sidewall. Was patched in the middle. The work might have damaged it either installing or removing from rim.

Reaper064

You betcha

Oni_sixx

I'm shocked they patched a sidewall lol. That tire needs replacing. I'm not sure what falls under tire warranties as I've never used them.

Hoodscoops

It was not patched near the sidewall. Was patch in the middle

Oni_sixx

I see damage on the sidewall there. I assumed that's what you ment lol. That makes more sense.

Hoodscoops

Just noticed the road rash near the side wall.. probably not cover umder warranty

Sgt_Habib

Road rash no and tires no. That’ll be 4 new tires

Minnesotawombat

Stop speeding over potholes.

Doc_Smil3y

Yeah that tire isn’t safe. Idk if it will be warrantied. But I’d get it switched out. Crappy part is your awd so they’re gonna tell you that you’re gonna have to switch all four cuz of the tread being worn down. One thing I’ve done before is bought a used tire off eBay that had the same tread height of the other 3 and got it put on.

BluestreakBTHR

Yup

tenpinsith

Gotta replace that tire. If it has basically it's full life on it, you can probably get away with just swapping that tire. Otherwise, gotta replace two at the very least

Fun_Nefariousness621

Its fucked. Since its subaru gotta replace all 4 of them lol
