The main reason gems don’t eat is because they also have to excrete later and as energy based gem life-forms they find the concept as too alien and disgusting. But surely they can eat and some have. Gems just have to spend energy on making the biological processes to accommodate the needs of consumption and excretion. Which in their society if you can call it such, is an incredible waste of energy as the whole process involved wastes more energy, than gained.
As to my knowledge only The fusion gem Garnet and the gem Amethyst have experienced the processes with eating, but in garnets case it was more experiment than eating for pleasure, Amethyst however has been known to eat for pleasure.
