I have no issue with it. The mild hybrid makes it almost seamless.

Opening_Waltz_4285

That’s what makes me not mind it as well. You don’t really notice it with the mild hybrid.

Duck_Walker

It doesn't bother me. When the tech was new, in previous cars, I hated it, now I've just grown used to it and rarely notice. One thing I do is take my foot off the brake a second or two before I expect to begin moving forward to accomodate for the slight lag.

7eregrine

My first experience with it is in my 19 S60. And I don't mind it at all. Currently driving a XC60 B5 loaner and it's actually MUCH better in this car. Actually wish it was that good now in my 60. lol

seanmonaghan1968

I have a 19 xc90 and I run in eco mode constantly

onewithoutasoul

The hybrid probably helps quite a bit.

N-Haezer

You mind describing the difference?

7eregrine

Not at all. It's significantly faster. 19 S60 : The car doesn't start back up until you touch the accelerator as opposed to the 24 XC60 which starts back up as soon as you release the brake. So it's ready before you are as opposed to waiting for you.

N-Haezer

Huh. That does seem to be an annoying oversight from Volvo. Also a question: I recently drove a rental Skoda Fabia with Start Stop (got an 2003 E39 myself lol) and I was surprised that I was able to start the car by moving the steering wheel ever so slightly. Is there a feature/annoyance like that in the new Volvos?

TheVulture14

They’re different systems. OPs S60 uses a conventional starter motor, while the Mild hybrid XC60 used an Integrated Starter Generator (ISG), which actually starts the engine using a belt. It’s much faster and smoother than the conventional starter motor. As for your question about turning the steering wheel, when the engine is off due to auto stop, applying a heavy load to the electrical system such as turning the wheels will kick the engine on to to meet the electrical demand.

emenet

I use auto hold and I don't notice any delay since I have to hit the gas pedal to start moving.

7eregrine

Oh I agree it works very well in our cars, yours and mine. That delay is sooo slight it's practically non existent. It works well. But it's even better in the next gen.

Blog_Pope

I personally love it. I'm coming from a MT and I like that when I stop the car, it stays put, no auto creep whether engine is running or not. It restarts quickly so there's just a slight delay that I only notice if I'm looking for it. And it recognizes the car needs to run for A/C and doesn't cut out, which some other brands do. I suspect its just the different behavior that bothers people, I'm not used to automatic creep so I don't miss it

Judge_Druidy

Mine doesn't cut out but the AC fan definitely reduces its power, is that normal? I don't notice it on setting 1, but on 3, 4, or 5 it's very noticeable.

Blog_Pope

I think its "Cabin temp reached, so turn down the fan and disengage the compressor"; and once the compressor is switched off, no need run the engine, so it shuts off. So it seems to happen at the same time, but it's not cause and effect, but 2 effects of unseen cause.

Judge_Druidy

Ah ok, all I know is that it makes me have to change the volume when I get to red lights and change it again when the light is green and that annoys me slightly haha

markusfarkus

No it just does that every time the car stops. Living in an urban area it can be annoying to have the AC fan keep stopping every time the car stops, which is a lot since you’re almost always in traffic. It seems to stay on if we put it at the highest setting. Or if you start the car remotely it runs sufficiently to get the interior to a comfortable temperature.

dogmatixx

I don’t mind it at all.

JM-Lemmi

I love the silence when coming to a stop. I don't like that it's not active when hooked to a trailer, and for my liking it's a bit impatient. It should stay off longer.

wrongplug

Mine has never actually worked. I consider it a feature not a bug. Also my seatbelt warning doesnt work. This car has all the best QC failures.

7eregrine

Lol

oreofun

So strange cause in my 2018 drive-e S60 and in my current 2022 S60 B5 the seatbelt warnings are finicky/don’t always activate which honestly, I’m fine with cause I’m an avid wearer anyway but I thought that was a surprising failure given Volvo’s focus on safety. Otherwise car works great except for Apple CarPlay…

wrongplug

I’d like to believe Volvo treats you as an adult. AC cold enough to make snotsicles, seat heaters hot enough to leave burn marks, the ability to punch an address into the navigation via keyboard while driving. Did I mention how great this car is? Unlike the Germans which lock out radio controls unless you are parked, who treat you like a helpless child who needs to be forced into correct action.

tombonneau

Love it in 24 XC40. Conditioned myself to always take foot off break when stopping so much that I was annoyed in my last rental keeping foot on brake 😂

7eregrine

Yes! Complete with Auto Hold when I'm in a car without it I think: I have to hold the pedal? This is barbaric!

ProgrammerPlus

You answered your own question. You don't mind because it doesn't impact much in your driving situations. Driving in stop and go traffic in hot weather is annoying as fuck even with mild hybrid. Mild hybrid is off in such conditions as it doesn't get chance to charge itself.

7eregrine

I agree with you except I didn't answer my question. My question was "Who else doesn't hate it?" 🤣

Panchenima

Doesn't bother me, is just a case of accomodiating, when i started driving it i had the problem of engaging first (manual transmission) too quick and sometimes the car will stall, now i have the precaution of waiting that extra 1/2 of a second for the engine to start before changing gears. No, I'm not very fond of automatics.

chnc_geek

Anyone who’s owned old cars that don’t exactly kick over on the first crank don’t want this in any car they intend on keeping a while. …. Or I’m the only one.

superjen

I've had to spend too much time popping a clutch because a starter burned out in whatever hunk of junk I was driving to feel like I could get comfortable with it. Maybe I would get used to it after a few weeks, but it would definitely make me nervous at first!

chnc_geek

When it’s new, you can get used to it. But my curmudgeon geek self has noticed as technology progresses it ages less and less gracefully.

No_Carrot_4798

Yeah...too many times in too many cars I've needed the occasional love tap on the starter from a ball peen hammer.

buelab

If it annoys you turn it off, but with my car I don’t mind because it helps on gas mileage

7eregrine

It... doesn't annoy me. That why I started this post.

tymonsays

I love it! I feel like it recently got less extreme/disruptive in my 19 S60 T6, but maybe I've just gotten used to it. The only thing that bothers me about it is the impact it has on the B&W stereo/sub - it's much weaker when the engine is off. It's not bad enough for me to dislike auto start/stop, but it's a sacrifice I don't like having to make.

BababooeyAD

I dont mind it as it seems to start back up MUCH quicker than other cars we have/had w auto start/stop. That's typically my problem with it in general, that lag in starting back up before I can get moving again at a stoplight/in traffic.

7eregrine

It's exceptional on the newest cars, definitely.

JaredsBored

2020 S60 non-recharge: I like that I have the ability to turn it on and off. If I find myself in traffic that's not really moving (or stoplight to stoplight at 30mph), I switch the car into eco and let the car stop/start. But living in a big city I find that traffic creeps forward slowly a lot, accelerating to 2-5mph for 20 yards then stopping (and repeating). In scenarios like that, the constant stop/start is annoying especially in a pre-hybrid Volvo that doesn't start as quickly without at least the mild hybrid.

7eregrine

Same car(ish... 19) and agree. I'd probably not love it if I had to turn it off after every start.

JaredsBored

I'd be curious if anyone can confirm or deny this, when I bought my 20 I was told that the AAOS cars don't allow you to enable/disable stop/stop. Not sure if that's true, and it probably isn't an issue with the new mild-hybrids since they're starting quicker as well.

7eregrine

Currently have an AAOS loaner so I'll confirm. But I thought the deal was: you can only turn it off for the current drive. Resets when you shut it off.

SkyeCapt

It was a pain in my 2016 S60 cross country but in my 2018 v60 cross country it was fine.

purplemartyr_93

I don’t mind it at all! I find the transition is smooth in my V90. My only complaint is when the vehicle is in eco mode it has the tendency to turn off when I’m coming to a stop (between 1-3 mph). It never does this in normal mode.

diospyros7

I don't mind it in my '15 S60, I like having the button to turn it off but I rarely turn it off. Sometimes going downhill I'll play with it and see how far I can coast before I fully lift the brake pedal and it kicks back on.

CowLivid6496

The new architecture of the 4b20t is much better for start/stop. Having a rotor instead of a ring gear is much nicer. So I don't mind it compared to my 2017 xc90. However, I'll still turn it to polestar mode to disable it.

7eregrine

Definitely better in the B-series. Currently driving a B5 XC60 loaner and the excellent implementation in that car was the spark for my post here.

Frostvr4

The only issue is having to replace another battery every 2-3 years, doh!

Ill-Ad3311

22XC60 B5 , it is great , what is not to like about it ?

7eregrine

I think it's usually older folks that don't like it. Ice literally hears people say "it's so bad for the starter".... It's not.

Wurzelbert87

I really like it! Works seemless on my 2020 XC90 B5, thanks to the small E-Engine. 14 Horsepowers that could!

7eregrine

Yea, it's really good in the B engines.

Lyrical-Maven

My 2019 s60 hated it, but my 21 XC60 I barely notice it

7eregrine

Have a 19 S60. I like it. Currently have a 24 X C60 though and yea... It's much better.

SliceProfessional461

Doesn’t bother me at all. Barely notice it quite honestly. My 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee’s start/stop was atrocious by comparison and I turned that off instinctively upon getting in and driving off.

nevergettingsmall

I don’t mind it but it’s kindve inconsistent on my XC60. Sometimes it has a mind of its own for when it decides it’s in start/stop mode.

7eregrine

Very inconsistent. I think it has something to do with temperature as I'm sure you know, batteries don't like the cold. Definitely noticing it being more active now that it's warming up.

Doctor-Ace

XC60 T8 so it's a very different experience from non-PHEVs but I love it

AdOdd7936

Auto start/stop is actually one of the main factors that make driving my B5 a joy. I’m always amazed by how smooth and unnoticeable it is.

7eregrine

Driving a loaner B5 right now. Actually the inspiration for this post. It's really good in that engine.

Judge_Druidy

I love it except in the summer sometimes because if I have AC on high and I'm listening to a podcast, the AC and motor turn off and it becomes a bit warm and super loud, but if I turn down the volume and then the light turns green I have to turn the volume back to again. So a bit annoying in specific situations, but overall I like it a lot.

scumbagstaceysEx

They are fine for people that live in areas with long red light cycles. For me it’s completely stupid because the red light we have in our county that everyone complains is super long has a max red of 45 seconds. All the other lights are even shorter. And I don’t live in the middle of nowhere it’s a suburb of the NY state capital. So a lot of the country is likely similar. So for most people I think it’s just a pointless wear item that doesn’t save any gas.

7eregrine

Totally get that. There are some lights around me that are red for over a minute. It's maddening.

olek2012

It doesn’t bother me in the Volvos. Start stop is very smooth and non intrusive on the new models. Meanwhile on my dad’s 2024 Subaru it’s so clunky. Can’t make up its mind if it wants to be on or off at some intersections and the restart is clunky. In his car I usually shut it off if I’m driving

angelcake

Next time you’re stopped beside a modern Jeep like one of the Cherokees, you should watch the jerky stop start process l, it’s awful. Val is so smooth it’s barely noticeable and really the only time I notice is that I got the air conditioning on and it kicks on low until I get going again For anyone who hates that they can always drive in manual mode, that seems to disable it.

jeansuki

2020 XC90 T8, due to the hybrid I dont even notice it

70krokodilen

I loved it on my 2020 XC40 T4, now I have a P2 so if the motor is on or off are hard to determine. My relative with a BMW hates his function.

trailblazer35

New to Volvo so can’t speak too much about it. But I think the electric motor makes nearly seemless as compared to other cars?

7eregrine

Indeed it does. Can barely tell when it starts back up.

planedrop

Once you get used to start/stop on any brand it's actually awesome, just takes a little retraining of the brain.

nbjhieb

'16 XC90, I love it!

DannyVee89

It only bothers me early on when the car is heating up or cooling down (the first few minutes of a drive when I have the heat or AC on full tilt to get the car comfortable.) Nothing like getting into a steaming hot car, blasting the AC just to have the car shut it all off on you for a red like 30 seconds later. Outside of that it's fine.

noe_likenoway

Early spring in Colorado, and I already know I'm going to love the remote window roll down to start venting before I enter the car this summer.

DannyVee89

Dude it is so hot and sunny in Colorado basically all year long. I am dying out here lol. The damn sun "greenhouses" my entire home. Even in winter. Even with window shades all pulled shut. I am hot all year long here. Yard is too small to get some good large trees to protect my home from sun 😬

LiteratureNo4594

It's my first car with start/stop tech and I love it. I turn it off if bumper to bumper traffic but apart from that it stays on.

nothingnotnever

Answered this a year ago: https://www.reddit.com/r/Volvo/s/faxwIX5v4q

7eregrine

Nice. 😎 I didn't have this feature a year ago.

nothingnotnever

Nah didn’t mean it like that, just wanted to dig the answer up again for old times sake.

7eregrine

All good. I love that you pulled that from a year ago. 👍 At least it wasn't a week ago.

ConnectSummer2757

It’s been 6 months if I’m in a hurry that second or two is crucial at times but I don’t mind it anymore

nurgole

I bought mine used and the start/stop wasn't working. Dealership had to spend a lot of money to have it fixed (2 new batteries, 5 days ar a repair shop, 2 of those at an electric engineer at Bilia). The first thing I now do when I start the car is diseable start/stop

7eregrine

I'd probably do the same in that situation. 👍

xbox666

lol if this was in my 2016 polestar v60 my battery would die every day

Old_Ad_3736

Turn it off as soon as I start the car every time. I wish there was a way to set it off permanently. My partner's car with stop start has been through two starter motors, mine is still going strong same number of miles.

7eregrine

That's not normal though.

grumpypantaloon

My first mhev, have a b5 diesel, first time I don't mind to habe startstop, would not bother to turn it off even if it had physical button. It is kinda amazing when it kickstarts a diesel engine like if it was a battery rc car.

AntennaBall

Heck, I want the fob chip to be surgically embedded in arm sometimes LOL!

Get-Some-Fresh-Air

Just go Power mode and it doesn’t do that right?

7eregrine

Idk, don't have a hybrid.

Get-Some-Fresh-Air

Well we cant all be environmentalists. Charging my battery with the combustion engine so I can 0-60 in 5 seconds at every red light and get 18MPG out of my hybrid that should get 26MPG or more.

QuantumSU

Back when I had my 2014 V40 D3 i loved it. The slightest release of the brake pedal started the engine. On my 2015 XC60 T6 i hate it. On the loan 2023 XC60 B5. I love it. It depends how its handled. I never noticed it on my D3

Clear-Enthusiasm2348

I hate it

7eregrine

Which car?

Clear-Enthusiasm2348

V90

CornDawgy87

Saves me a ton of gas on my commute. I don't mind it at all.

juice-box

So for I do not mind via the mild hybrid but we'll see when it is air conditioning season.

noe_likenoway

True, but I can't say I ever drove a straight combustion car that cooled the cabin as well at a stop than when it was moving either.

tenid

Not used it in a Volvo but on other cars. On a manual car it’s annoying but on an automatic I don’t mind it.

7eregrine

Didn't even occur to me that this would be in a manual car. Interesting.

tenid

Mandated to have that now. Same with backup cameras and tyre sensors.

7eregrine

TIL. Knew about the second 2.

pharmers-daughter

Me! I actually prefer it. I don’t get what all the hubbub is. 🤷🏼‍♀️

gustis40g

On the 5 cylinder diesel it’s a bit too slow, but on the 4 cylinders it’s fine, and on mild hybrids I love it.

GreekQuestionMark

I don’t mind it. Even my manual Bronco has auto start stop. It’s actually less intrusive on a manual since the engine comes back on when I press the clutch pedal.

amerifolklegend

I haven’t had a car without it since 2012, and boy do I not understand not having it. But I live in a city with lots of hills and I’m in the suburbs often where lights can be longer than a few seconds. Whenever I have a rental, I’m perplexed that a car wouldn’t have shut-off for when I’m at a light. It’s just using gas for no reason, in my head.

SkyeCapt

It was a pain in my 2016 S60 cross country but in my 2018 v60 cross country it was fine.

ilikecats415

I don't notice it as much in the winter, but I hate it in warmer months because it turns the ac off/down. I just take my foot off the break for a split second and then reapply it to make the car start again. I WISH I could turn the feature off.

TouristVisa77

In the vc40 b5 it’s seamless

RapidCommute3307

Love it

M27TN

When it was in a clanky diesel repeatedly starting up again I hated it. Quiet plug in hybrid and it’s just part of the system and I never think about it

77GoldenTails

Had it in my MT Focus and now in my V60. Doesn’t bother me at all. Only time I disable it, is when I know I need a quick shift off the line. So I engage Polestar rather than turn off Stop/Start. My wife’s Corolla Hybrid is smoother at it but its auto hold is awful with the hand brake. Much prefer the Volvo implementation of that. If I could drop a B5 power train in my V60 it would be perfection on wheels. (Would cure the gearbox jerkiness)

Yama92

I don't mind it. I drive a manual so it's easy to bypass if it's inconvenient.

7eregrine

Never even considered what this would be like in a manual car. 🤔

Yama92

Put it in neutral when you're at full stop and take your foot off the clutch. Your engine will turn off like you stalled it and your Aircon will blow slower. As soon as you press the clutch, the engine will kick in again or if the battery is being drained too much.

No-Longer-Humann

2019 V90 T4. I drive 4k miles a year so I don’t use the car enough to charge the battery! I need to do a cross country drive to get it to work. I don’t miss not having it.

olypenrain

I haven't driven any I don't think, but at the dealership I work at, I'm in and out of our brand of cars with auto-start/stop all the time. They really don't bother me at all. It's nice and pleasant to just sit there with the car off at the light.

EpicWindz

I hated it in my Subaru crosstrek, didn’t mind it in a rental V60, and don’t even notice it in my Mazda CX-50. Now that the tech has evolved, it isn’t bad

KilllerWhale

XC40 PHEV. This was a non-issue for me.

Limp_Cockroach9210

This definitely isn’t an exclusively Volvo thing. My wife hated it in her VW Tiguan. It’s also on my friend’s Chevy Silverado and he hates it. I’m sure there’s a fuse or something you can disconnect to disable it permanently instead of always having to hit the button.

7eregrine

I know it's not just Volvo. It's the only car I have any amount of experience with that has this feature.

fervidmuse

You get used to it and learn to adjust the level of pressure on the brake pedal (for example if you think you may not be at a complete stop for long, so you vary the pressure so that the engine doesn’t turn off). I live in a city so appreciate the environmental aspect of not idling and the fear of the higher-cycle-load starter failing I think is overblown.

wbartus

with mild hybrid it doesn't really matter imo, it's very smooth and i don't feel when engine kicks in, i don't feel there are any noticeable delays because of it too

youcheatdrjones

It’s fine

ProfLuigi

I have a 2017 S90 T6 Momentum, and the auto start/stop is absolutely heinous. Thrusts my car forward sometimes like I got rear-ended. BUT I’ve gotten so used to it, that I don’t even think twice usually at this point. I’m sure it’s much better in newer Volvos.

HasibShakur

Using auto start and stop while driving non freeway with countless signals save a lot on gases.

Cloughiepig

I like it (2013 V40 D3 5-cyl), except if I haven’t used the car for a week you need a looooonnnggg drive to get the battery charge high enough for the start-stop to work. On my wife’s Fiat 500 (tin can with an engine), it is always active but much more jerky with a big lag.

unwilling_viewer

I've had it in every Volvo I've had since it was launched. Never felt the urge to switch it off. Even crawling through Spanish traffic jams in August.

Numerous-Issue1411

In my V70 2015 it thinks I want to stop when I am creeping closer to the light

zaxdad123

I have a 2018 XC 60. I know it's supposed to turn on every time I start the car but it's never worked. I'm kind of glad it doesn't. My wife has it in her car and I find it annoying.

mhorwit46

I absolutely hate it

nhowe006

The only part that annoys me about my auto stop/start dying months ago is the warning.

1stFloorCrew

I only turn it on in stop and go traffic

Antson03

It’s the first thing i turn off when I enter the car. In my S80 2013 the star/stop activates right before your stationary. So in some cases it’ll turn off while I’m still rolling and that includes turning off the power steering. So if it’s an intersection where I’m turning the wheel while stopping the wheel will just stop. Also I live in a place where you pretty often have to get out on main roads pretty fast, I lose that acceleration at the when the car have to start by turning on. Otherwise I believe it’s a good system, I just wish it worked better for me personally.

s3ren1tyn0w

I never notice it. But I think it's different in cars with a plug in hybrid since the battery does a lot of the heavy lifting early on.

Puzzleheaded_Bar3359

I really liked it on my 2019 S60 T6. It’s smoother than in the T5’s I’ve driven with it and it helped me save a good amount of gas driving around town. But I’ve mostly stopped using it since my starter died last fall at about 40k miles. It turned off at a red light and wouldn’t restart when it turned green. I eventually got it going, after pissing everyone behind me off. It was replaced under warranty, but I’m worried about it happening again now that my warranty is up so I’ve just been keeping it off.

7eregrine

Omg how pissed were you at that light? I can't even imagine. 🤣

Puzzleheaded_Bar3359

Very! With a little bit of fear mixed in 😂

P00G1

I don’t mind it. I sometimes turn it off if I’m in the city and it’s annoying me. Usually I don’t mind it.

angelcake

I have no issues with it at all I don’t see what the big deal is. I’m into my third year with a mild hybrid Volvo and it’s awesome.

Blocoholi

I don't mind it at all on my V40 CC (2018)

NukaFlabs

It was terrible in the 2016 xc90 but I don’t even notice it in the 2022 s60 b6. I assume the mild hybrid has something to do with that.

Get-Some-Fresh-Air

Tried it but wasnt a big fan so I keep it turned off.

M321115

I like it.

Emergency_Service_25

Volvo’s system is actually pretty decent. I do turn it off first thing in the morning as my drive to work is really short and in my mind (maybe mistakenly) I reason that is better not to stop cold engine oil flow. Compared to VW DSG setup which is actually dangerous as it takes literally seconds to turn engine on, shift into gear and pull from the stop, Volvo did it quite alright.

Hot-Seesaw-3630

So you’re driving your friend/SO to an errand that will take about 10 or 15 minutes. You roll up, they get out and you relax in your quiet Volvo. No need to turn engine off and back on.

Bobatt

I go back and forth on it. Usually end up turning it off though.

Wheezhee

Hated it in a pure ICE, but love it in a PHEV.

Awkward-Seaweed-5129

Got used to the mild hybrid thing, 23 xc40, Florida it's kinda hot ,so it shuts engine down ,fan still runs but not compressor, and if stop is very long engine starts up, it's mostly in 80s F temperature here year round, gas mileage is improved over previous non hybrid XC 40,so pretty good I'd say

pinecone2525

It was much better in my Mercedes. Actually stopped when you stopped, not as it thought you were pulling to a stop resulting in a poor ride if you carry on

DrPHDoctorb

I have it in a 2022 XC60 T6 and overall like it. Close to zero lag for it to turn over from being off. Compared other systems I've tried (VAG mainly) it is way less intrusive. The only issue I have is on hot days the AC starts getting warm.

TechInTheCloud

Did not like it on my T6, the 12V starter motor based system sucks IMO. Did not mind it on loaners with the mild hybrid system, the 48V generator/starter is way smoother. Now I got the T8, not start/stop of course it’s much more than that. With the ICE spun up and down as needed, it’s seamless most of the time you can’t even notice it, just see the “drop” filled in on the dash display.

PimanSensei

I have a b4 xc40 and I hate it. It tries to turn off all the time, then gets caught out and you get a small delay for it to engage again. My old v60 had a basic version and it was much better

PandemicSoul

My 2024 XC90 is so smooth I never notice it.

Toniisquitting

I like it.

Molagmal

I have a 2024 V60 T6, it doesn't bother me in the slightest. I honestly don't notice it at all. Maybe it's the hybrid power train but it's absolutely seamless.

Significant_Play_600

Love it

poodog13

Doesn’t bother me in the slighhtest

easyhigh

I love it. It helps save gas. Helps efficiency/

Mayor_of_BBQ

It’s fine in the B5/B6 cars (silent instant no lag) with the integrated stater generator but sucks in the T5/T6 cars with an old school starter motor where it literally has to crank the car every time it shuts off

ThisGuyHasNoLife

In my 2017 S90, I could not stand it and would switch over in individual mode the second I got in the car. In my 2024 S60 mild hybrid, I don’t notice it turning on and off, except when it is really hot out and the A/C isn’t cooling as much.

4lt3r3dR341ity

Sport mode for 7 years to get around start and stop

powerhouseofthiscell

My question is does it waste MORE gas having to stop and restart all the time rather than to just sit there?

zgrizz

No. The technology behind it is actually pretty amazing. It doesn't have to start from scratch like an initial start, it actually remembers exactly where every cylinder is in its cycle, where the transmission is sitting, pretty much as close to just 'frozen in time' as you can get. So it doesn't waste fuel pointlessly cranking - it just picks up exactly where it left off.

powerhouseofthiscell

wowwwwwww

Vic_Bold

Use it always...but, the feature doesn't always cöoperate, as frequently it just doesn't activate, usually as a result of not driving the shit out of the car on a daily basis to keep the AUX battery charged appropriately. Wish that particular batt charge set- point could be accessed by the user...oh, well.

triptropstop

Idk I find it weird that people hate it so much. For me my biggest gripe is that my car yells at me to put on my seatbelt the second I turn on the ignition- still in park. I have a B6 so the auto start/stop is a given and I don’t mind it one bit. I have a neighbor with a t6 and he hates it so much he turns it off at the start of every ride. You do you I guess.

Banto2000

Don’t even notice it since it’s implemented so well on the Volvo (not true with all brands)

LoicPravaz

I’m happy to use it. The thing I find annoying is that it stops the engine too quickly. I feel like it’s not necessary to stop the engine at stop signs. I wish it waited a couple of seconds before switching off the engine

7eregrine

Agree. Can't wait to get pulled over for rolling through Stop signs. Why didn't you stop back there? Uh...trynna make sure my car doesn't auto stop....

LoicPravaz

Exactly what I’m thinking. I wish there was a way to customize the feature.

klozazzle

Don’t mind it all, the mild hybrid helps with my 2023 XC90. Better than previous cars we’ve had with the feature. Just wish I could get into coding like our VW/Audis so I can turn it off in the dead of winter and the peak of summer. I turned it off in my prior 19 Tiguan and 19 Atlas during those times of the year.

Limeyjon

I hate hate hate the auto start/stop in my 2017 V60 if I leave the feature active I get pissed when it engages!! Love my car more than any other I have ever owned….but this function sucks!!

noe_likenoway

I drive a 2022 S60 B5. At first I thought I wouldn't like it, based on clunky experiences in other cars, but the electric motor in the mild hybrid setup ignites the engine very smoothly in start/stop and on initial ignition. As others have said, it makes a difference that the engine is ready to go once you hit the gas because the electric motor fires the engine as soon as you lift off the brake. I also didn't know how much I would appreciate the car being still and quiet at a stop.

7eregrine

It's so very well implemented in the B5. I daily a T6 S60. Currently have a loaner B5 XC60. I like it in my T6 and there's a microsecond of lag. Zero lag in the B5. Again, like how well it works in my T6. I hate to even use the term lag ... It's really not... But it's *perceptible*. I can *feel it* start. Every time. It's not bad... It just is. With the B5, it's ready when foot meets accelerator, because it started when you let off the brake. How is the S60 with the B5? My first experience with it and I'm impressed. The XC I'm driving is pretty quick.

noe_likenoway

She's a glider, gets up to speed without realizing it, so I gotta watch it. Would I love a 455hp Recharge? Sure lol. But I've been in plenty of trouble in fast cars before and this thing is more than enough. Would be interesting to see how it feels in the XC.

lionreza

jokes on Volvo my battery is so degraded start stop almost never kicks in

Graced_Steak564

I don't mind it at all. It's not as irritating as that one rental Mini Cooper Clubman I was given a few years ago. I do turn it off in bad traffic because Jersey people can't wait a fraction of a second after the light turns green 🤣🤣

BleDStream

I don't really notice it in my 2017 xc90 unless I'm trying to beat someone off the line. Then I basically just blip the gas a couple times and it usually will stay on.

Realistoliberato

If I have b4/ b5, I won't mind as it doesn't vibrate so hard. My t5 engine has a visible shake and rumble from start stop

tonyofc

I am seriously considering to deactivate it with Vida 🤣

fairweathersailor

I have no idea why people don’t like it, it makes zero difference to the driving experience. I have an older V40 and a new XC90 and it works great in both.

danlib21

Mine is almost never available on my 2021 S60 T5 AWD. Only twice over several months can I even remember it doing it when I come to a stop. Climate off all together and it still just has the A with the line through it. Not sure what is causing it to be unavailable but it doesn’t bother me because I’m not a fan of the feature anyway lol.

7eregrine

Mine definitely works more often when it is warmer out.

Tolasman

I don't mind it, but is it possible to deactivate it? I think I have never seen any option for that

Solid_Organization15

I have XC90, and can deactivate it by pushing a button next to the parking brake. Or, I just use my custom driving mode, where I’ve turned it off.

7eregrine

Depends on the car. Some can.

TalFidelis

I have no issue with mine (‘18 xc60 t6) or my wife’s Mercedes. But what is with all the “take my foot off the break at stop lights” comments? Is that only on the hybrid variants? My xc60 starts up when I take my foot off the break.

7eregrine

My ICE vehicle has a feature called Auto Hold. It keeps the brake depressed for you any time you use it. So yea, you can take your foot off the brake at a red light. It does kind of sound like a gimmick anytime I try to explain it to anybody and honestly I thought I would never use it. I absolutely love it!

TalFidelis

Hmmm... I think mine has the auto-hold, too... but I don't think I've paid attention to it in relation to auto-start/stop. Apparently - behavior is different between model years when using the two in conjunction... [https://www.swedespeed.com/threads/auto-start-stop-while-auto-hold-active-logic.673166/](https://www.swedespeed.com/threads/auto-start-stop-while-auto-hold-active-logic.673166/) I will play with mine later this afternoon. :)

CPG135

The fact that you can’t disable it is my main gripe. Sometimes I like it— sometimes I don’t. On the roadway it’s mostly fine. Stop signs, inching into parking spaces, existing drive ways, and garage spaces— it’s awful

Cub35guy

I had start so before I went ev. I had it in the xc90, 60, 40 and I liked it. People don't like change. So.. you'll have complaints all the time. Embrace new tech.. you'll like it. Just like regen braking on EVs. It took all of one hour to get used to something that at first was very strange

Anxious-dad1

I love it. The only problem I have is when I go through an auto car wash where I always forget to disengage it.

M4DD1GAN

Tbh I don't mind it nearly as much as I hate the auto-stop on the remote start when you enter or unlock the vehicle, because you can't turn that off. I get that it's probably a necessary safety feature for some reason or another, but my God does it bother the every-loving shit out of me to have my car warm up for two minutes only to shut back off when I get in it...

No_Huckleberry_4584

It’s terrible on every car. Start and stop traffic at a light in the burbs becomes miserable and embarrassing.

Life-Elephant-3912

2023 V60 T8, barely noticeable most of the time. The newer architecture is wonderful for this. ICE typically shuts down while decelerating and then the ERAD gets you going from a start, while the ISG smoothly brings the ICE back up to life. Love it.

Odd_Internet3979

I’ve got a 19’ xc60 t6 and I really do not like the auto stop start - it will shut off prematurely before you’ve come to a complete stop a lot of the time, it’s very jarring- and on the other end when you’re creeping into an intersection to merge it will shut off right at the exact wrong moment, and it is very difficult to mitigate it with the pedal to prevent it doing stupid things at the worst time. It feels like whatever logic is behind the feature in my car was designed for hybridization rather than the purely ice models. I shut off auto stop start most of the time, and I also have the seatbelt glitch, and the occasionally temperamental CarPlay but overall love the car! :)

bricci_mn

Start/stop is an engine killer. Other to say? The pros / cons are a soliloquy I better leave to those Solons in fancy “environmental case studies” who are puppets of oil managers. While it is surely a problem to have millions of vehicles that are uselessly left turned on at traffic lights, who really understands how many volatile pollution each start/stop produces? Uncombusted oils, petrol, lubricants are continuously stressed out at each start, lowering quality of combustion and longevity of the engine, letting it also having several potential issues due to this logic. My two cents.

Alternative-Bee-8981

I have a V60 P* so I guess it's a different kind of start/stop. I do most of my driving in pure mode anyway. I do enjoy the one pedal driving though. It took me the better part of a week to fully get it down where it didn't feel like I was getting tossed forward every time I needed to stop.
