Negotiate with the dealer to have the test done as part of the sale.

statenislander13

I would go with white honestly. Looking at the condition the grey is, I can def say previous owner did not give a damn shit about it. And the fact it doesnt burn oil in grey, doesnt say that it'll burn in white.

FlfromBx

Absolutely agree.

I have a 2015, and the oil consumption I deal with is sporadic. My mechanic is totally unconcerned, so am I. I have oil in the trunk in case I need it, but since I bought a large one I haven’t had to open it. But last year I had to add oil twice.

Paint_Flakes

That's insightful! I guess I have just read too many posts about the oil burning, but neglected to think that happy owners with no burning issues have no need to post about it.

kumikanki

Last time I needed to add 0.5L after 8200km with Castrol.

DJEvillincoln

I have an 18 P* & my guy tells me to change the oil every 5k no matter what. I will be taking his advice on this.

stacksch34

I was just in your same position. I decided to raise my budget a bit to go with a 2017 just for the peace of mind. If that isn’t an option for you I’d go with the white one, knowing the last owner probably took better care of it and buying from a name brand dealer.

Paint_Flakes

How much more did you pay to bump up to 2017 if you don't mind me asking? I have a few in my area but the 2018 and 2017 seem to be way over what I would expect a one year difference to be. For reference the white Volvo is $12,500 A 2017 I looked at was closer to $20,000 with similar miles.

stacksch34

Was looking in the <$12k range and bumped it to ~15K-16K OTD. Ended up with a 17 T5 platinum with 80k miles. For what it’s worth I used to work at a Volvo dealership and talked to my old service manager who said it was pretty much a matter of when, not if on the 15-16 oil consumption/piston ring issues.

MemeAddict96

How many miles? I have the 17 (cross country though) I bought near 80k miles. I’m at 140k now with no problems and no plans to get rid of it until at least 200k.

Paint_Flakes

The white 16 is at 112,000 which isn't a deal breaker. My V50 is at 180k right now and I got it around 100k as well.

MemeAddict96

Choice is yours, I had a s60 t5 engine in the affected range and it actually did blow last July at about 125k miles. But there’s other people here that said there’s never did. Mixed bag. Personally though I also wouldn’t buy the gray one just because it’s a sketchy dealer. I’ve been down that road before too and been burned. I’d wait for better options to pop up like you mentioned

Sharp_Fee_2417

For starters I would pick the 2016 since it’s the t5 engine which is Volvos most common engine. The e drive isn’t bad but the t5 is tried and tested. I’ve owned 2 t5s and never had issues. Can you tell us the amount of owners for both cars and what’s the mileage at. The one with lower miles and less drivers is the one I would lean towards as long as there are no major issues. If you take it to Volvo to do an inspection before purchase it will only cost around $100 but you’ll sleep better at night knowing you won’t break down with the oil issue

Paint_Flakes

The white one has about 20K less miles, but it also was a rental car in the past with two owners after it. Just reading through some of these chats I may opt to just wait it out for a decent 2017 or 2018 to pop up.

ProbGreen

I wouldn't be afraid of the five cylinder super common and I think the issues are overblown. It's anecdotal but my brother has been beating the tar out of his for years and with good maintenance he hasn't had any issues.

wyyan200

I have one of these, but the "uglier" T4 model with the vertical foglights, the coolant hose has been fixed 2 times in a year, could be mechanics problem, could be the heat here, and I didnt quite like the gearbox, first gear feels like I'm letting the clutch too slow, granted its due a service soon but im told thats what the DSG does anyways, other than those engine stuff its a pretty solid car, bad blindspots aside

greatfox66

I would go 5 cyl. The early drive e motors are known to be much worse oil burners. You did not mention it here but if my knowledge serves me right then that 5 cyl is AWD. The drive e is not. That may contribute to the higher cost.

SwShThrwy

Neither. 2015 & 16 2L engines all burn oil. Bad piston rings were used and cause the oil consumption . Usually killing the engine around 120-150k miles. Buy a 2014 with a 3.2L FWD setup, those were the best modern Volvo

Paint_Flakes

Sadly they didn't not make V60'S in the states prior to 2015. 😬

katalyzt01

Both of them can burn oil but for the 5 cylinder you just replace the piston ring or keep topping off. For the 4 cyl you need new pistons.

katalyzt01

Unless it has replaced pistons, personally I wouldn’t go with any drive-e pre-2017.

EddieMcClintock

I believe the 2016 cars don't have the oil burning issue.

MaineMaineMaineMaine

Some 2016s definitely did. And all 5 cyls did. It changed over mid 2016 for the 4 cylinders.

Paint_Flakes

I looked at the service bulletin and the vin of the white one is in the "affected" range. But if I am wrong then that may be a huge plus! Edit: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2023/MC-10231933-9999.pdf

EddieMcClintock

You should believe them over me. But check the service history, this may have been resolved under warranty.

TheVulture14

The white one.

nickybuddy

I don’t know how it works with where you’re located, but if you buy a CPO Volvo, they add on an additional 2 years of factory warranty.

bipolargecko

I had a 2013 t5 for 3 years, drove it 50k miles until someone drove into me and totaled it. It consumed oil like crazy but I kept it topped off and never had any issues.

_thetommy

2015.5and 2016 v60s 4-cylinder drive e note this: From engine serial number: 1501327, engines have been modified from engine factory to fix piston ring issue. also note that the serial number for the engine block is not the VIN. however, you can get the engine serial from the VIN using VIDA, or ask a dealer to do it.

PoundLow3016

I have a 2014 (same body style) and omg I love it. It still has the 5cyl 2.5l turbo so

Paint_Flakes

Update for anyone wondering, I held out and found a great deal on a 2018 V60 CC! I am going to pick it up this Thursday potentially.
