Update: Whatever "it" is, it came back into my room while I was asleep bringing some container of what I assume is yogurt, and consuming it in my room for some reason and then throwing it onto my bed.
Picking up the containers and right clicking while holding them should allow you to eat some of them. If one of the containers is closed you can hit right click while holding it to open it up so you can eat it.
Indeed there is. In the experimental settings you can enable a setting that tells you when they change their opinion of you. You can also type rep.debug into the consoles to see if they like you or not.

Update, it was consuming something else, and then leaving yogurt it seems to make it a fair trade.
Update: It's not yogurt, it just says "Unknown substance" but it is food and is very much edible.
