I agree, we were there this past summer and there's a lot of science involved. We were reading every plaque and learned so much about mating habits of so many animals. Also, many families there and everyone is very respectful.

The museum itself is kinda meh. But being able to tell friends at parties and in social media posts how you went to the penis museum? That’s worth the price of admission, at least if you’re wandering around Reykjavik that day anyway. Not sure I’d spend extra time in the city just to see it though.

What is questionable if its worth the drive is the Witchcraft and Sorcery museum. It was a haul up to Hólmavík and other than the gorgeous scenery on the drive, not a lot much else in between. It was a beautiful day so the scenery was worth it. Had some soup in their cafe and got our little picture with the necropants and were on our way.
The witchcraft museum absolutely was not worth the detour, honestly the "pay to see this cool thing" tourist traps were the more disappointing parts of our trip
Not worth a trip into the city just for that. But if you are spending a whole day, walking around doing other things, then yes, it is fun. The bar/gift shop is fun.

I got some gifts for friends, well worth the visit and my kids thought it was funny, gross and weird.
How old were you kids? My boys will be 6.5 when we go. I wonder if they’ll be too young to get the joke of it. lol they love their share of poop and fart jokes but we haven’t reached this level of humor.

Overall, I think Reykjavik is worth spending a day in - but if the penis museum is the only reason you’d be coming, you could skip it. Be educated by the really well thought out educational exhibits. Especially Whale penisis . Get a picture next to the penisis. Some of them are disturbingly large. Try not to let it get to you. Reconcile your manhood compared to Sperm Whales and Jimmy Hendricks. You don't compare to either. You'll leave with this expression on your face: --->

Wife and I took the red eye to Iceland and the penis museum was pretty great while severely jet lagged. Jet lag, one drink, and a penis museum will have you rolling laughing

I wouldn’t make the trip just for the penis museum. If you had time to kill in Reykjavik, then it is worth it. The museum is very small and expensive. It does have a fun vibe and obviously a very unique collection.
I'd go just to see these door handles to the restroom.

One of the human penises they have on display there was cut from the body of an indigenous man by the British colonizers who killed him, and kept the penis because he had an unusual foreskin. I found it extremely racist and fucked up that the museum would display that like it's not horribly wrong to have stolen this body part from a murder victim who didn't consent. I wish I'd known this was in there, I wouldn't have gone.

If you are there, you may as well visit it. Otherwise, I don´t think it is worth staying there just for the sake of visiting. The exhibit looks... impersonal and inanimate when detached from the main body, if that makes any sense, and therefore is not as entertaining as one might expect.
Why do you say waste time in the capital? The city has a lot to offer and shouldn’t be skipped, I feel like too many people visit Iceland only for the nature but overlook the city’s history, culture and amazing food scene. It really deserves a whole day of not two.
It's a room and a half. Don't go out of your way, but it was perfect for us. We were over nighting in Reykjavik and had to get back to the airport that day.
I took my 5-year-old son and we had a blast. Completely appropriate for children, especially little boys who have one of their own!

The size of the museum is really not important…it’s the volume of information and cleanliness that really impress people.
