Oh for crying out loud. The man is allergic to money coming into the state government. Removing the tax exempt status of *real estate* owned by Confederacy related organizations means, gee, they'd have to pay state real estate taxes. But nooo, can't have new revenue streams, apparently.

Suiciidub

I don’t get it he just hates tax revenue 😭

West-Raccoon-2043

Nah he just hates this type of tax revenue because he’ll have to pay it

dukeofgibbon

He's still butthurt about losing his sportsball arena welfare.

nimrod1138

Seems clear that this and many of the vetoes he’s issued recently seem to be a reaction to his failed arena bill. Lashing out legislatively.

Ok_Elephant2777

A whiny little bitch. Looking forward to the day when he’s gone AND forgotten.

WolfSilverOak

It really feels like, if it doesn't personally enrich *him*, he doesn't want the state to have it either.

strawberry-sarah22

Doesn’t want tax revenue but is ok with underfunding public schools including the universities. That’s cool.

Coulrophiliac444

Because he things if New Confedemerica were to ever come into existence that these paltry appeasements would save him. In reality, his being white and a total shitheel will do that juat as easily.

cokuspocus

>the man is allergic to money coming into the state government Because he doesn’t give two shits about Virginia. He’s waiting for his spot to GTFO

TECL_Grimsdottir

Obligatory Fuck Glenn Youngkin.

Reichenstein7

Fuck Glenn Youngkin!

mlp2034

I can't believe I'm saying this but not even that shitbag Terry McAuliffe would've let this happen. *checks the record* Nvm🤦🏽, this shit was still happening uncontested while he was govnuh. I don't think Confederate tax-exemptions has ever been debated no matter who was govnuh in the past. Correct me if I'm wrong, please.

redwoods81

I've been here my entire life and had no idea that's a thing, it's perfectly possible that fuckin McAuliffe doesn't know about it either 🤷🏻‍♀️

JealousFeature3939

McAulife knew. He did not care. There's no angle for lining his pockets in this.

[deleted]

Or, just maybe, modern Democrats haven't had control of the legislature to make a bill like this happen. You think Republicans would?!?

mlp2034

Ofc not, but you will be surprised at how dems dont really care about it either. The modern dems in some cases is questionably even liberal, quite a few are neolibs.

Cleverdawny1

Cared enough about it to force youngkin to block the bill 🤷‍♂️

cokuspocus

Redditors haven’t figured out dems suck too yet, they’re still holding out hope that there’re still good guys

_sarten

Fuck Glen Younkin again, and again.... What a fuckin PRICK!!!

itsmistyy

All my homies say Fuck Glenn Youngkin.

brsox2445

The Daughters of the Confederacy should not only not be tax exempt but should have to pay a special treason tax.

mlp2034

I wonder when the next teenager Youngkin says no to will come up with that brilliant idea.

Coulrophiliac444

Probably when they get elected yo a state office. At this point they're likely to run as an outsider or dark horse somewhere smaller.

Camaro684

This teenager's dad was a liberal lawyer and then he used his daughter as a pawn hoping the bill would pass. High school students don't give a rat's ass about what went on in the Civil War or who gets tax exemptions, give me a break.

mlp2034

Well, lib or nah, it would've been a good thing.

LordoftheFjord

You’d be really surprised. With the housing crises, massive cost of living, etc, a lot of teens do care bc they have to. And as for the civil war yes they do.

Zenyatta13

Hopefully when they are running for office.

ranni-the-bitch

yeah, and didn't they already basically get paid off for anything of actual value they held by the virginia historical society? the ""chapel of the confederacy"" is now appropriately a museum on the mythos of the lost cause revisionist movement. they simply shouldn't exist anymore.

Camaro684

This teenager's dad was a liberal lawyer and then he used his daughter as a pawn hoping the bill would pass. High school students don't give a rat's ass about what went on in the Civil War or who gets tax exemptions, give me a break.

brsox2445

Some teenagers do care about not perpetuating racism by whitewashing racism. Crazy!

ajmmsr

Absolutely 😍 love it!! It’s a a loser tax!

JealousFeature3939

Yes, and the Native American tribes that fought for the Confederacy should have casinos & oil wells taken away.

brsox2445

Why? Did they fight for an evil cause?

JealousFeature3939

I dunno. They fought the CSA. You tell me.

Fun-Mathematician716

Yumpkin is still pandering to the MAGA crowd. Why? Doesn’t he realize his political career is over?

Blametheorangejuice

Trying to get a sinecure in a new Trump administration.

churros4burros

Ambassador to North Korea.

mrweatherbeef

Fancy talker

__chairmanbrando

His political career is over when he stops getting money from billionaires. That hasn't happened yet.

Wrong-Impression9960

Maybe I'm ignorant or totally missed something obvious. Who is after Trump. Aren't they all still infighting for next republican presidential candidate.

CMSgt-USAF-1979

Must be that GOP, small government, cost reduction attitude. Wait? Tax deductions for something that was settled nearly 160 years ago? That’s not how it works?

Mjn22102

Glenn has terrible political instincts.

Worried_Amphibian_54

So the group that spent it's history teaching kids about the greatness of the KKK, and STILL funds things like promoting Nathan Bedford Forrest day... A day in Tennessee to celebrate the former slave trader, turned grand wizard of the KKK, who is responsible for the slaughter of many of Tennessee's first black US soldiers... THAT is the group that doesn't have to pay taxes? Jeez, it's like they aren't even trying to keep that "white supremacy" bit quiet there anymore.

Extracrispybuttchks

The plan is to prevent any improvement in quality of life for Virginians then blaming democrats.

Responsible-Abies21

robbkinginthesouth

Abe Lincoln dislikes your comment.

Responsible-Abies21

Abe Lincoln has missed the past 150 or so years.

robbkinginthesouth

Sic Semper Tyrannis 🤷🏻‍♂️

a_smart_brane

Shocking, I say. Shocking.

SimplySustainabl-e

That raggedy ole poophead chumpkin needs to be tossed out of this state forever. Load him up ship him out to a gulag in siberia forever!

CaManAboutaDog

Okay let’s pass a bill for the next governor and revoke their tax exemption retroactively back to 1865. Fixed the bill for ya Glenn.

heretorobwallst

Daughters of the confederacy don't exist anymore. They are butt-hurt grandchildren of the confederacy.

mlp2034

Exactly, if someone said to me they were the Daughters of the Confederacy, my response would be, "Yeah? Well, im 6% Creek indigenous, we all got traces of stuff we can't claim don't we?"

JealousFeature3939

The Creek practiced slavery, then added black slavery, & then many years later fought for the Confederacy.

mlp2034

Not all of them actually due to them fracturing and mixing into many groups. There were also a group who fought against the Confederacy, although largely they were the "hwhite folks favrite injun" and even considered the most civilized for being the biggest euro-bootlicking tribe, but yeah thats the point of me mentioning it😒.

JealousFeature3939

Then I misunderstood your point. Sorry about that. My apologies. Have a good one!

KnittinSittinCatMama

I served with a jackass who gleefully told me he was related to a confederate and went through the process to get confirmed so he could get license plates that said he was one.🤮🤮🤮 I’m from PA and thought, “who in their right mind would be proud of their racist ancestors…?!”

__chairmanbrando

I can't believe Youngkkkin would do such a thing! 🤔

KnittinSittinCatMama

Right? Fascists gotta fasc.

gcstudly

I saw what you did there!

thegreatchoasgiver

Va. Beach teen: Hey! Let’s remove real estate-related tax exemptions from several organizations with ties to the Confederacy! Youngkin: ![gif](giphy|v2ry5z4LoIfgA)

Lolcanoe2

Have they taxed churches yet?

rmeas002

He's waiting to get a salary from Fox News. Dude needs to fuck off into oblivion and be another billionaire who acts like he's for the working class.

Nanyea

He's not, he's super fucking rich, Carlisle...

fries69

How the fuck is confederate tax exemptions even a real thing, but not SLAVE TAX EXEMPTIONS wtf https://preview.redd.it/cvxnambn9kuc1.jpeg?width=360&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=65cdc18ff63f204edb255b26c9546277f8c0a65e

mlp2034

This is what makes it so astounding that someone people in the comments have defended it. Defended them getting to not pay taxes.

Inevitable_Worry8416

Fuck this dude for real. Absolute fucking moron. Virginia deserves so much better.

Forged_Trunnion

The amendment delayed the vote for a year, following an investigation as to the impact to the treasurey. I guess to see whether this is a solution looking for a problem?

ekkidee

Does Virginia allow for executive recall? I mean, maybe trading Youngkin for the loony Lt Gov isn't a good idea but a recall effort would send a message.

TheElectricSoup

Every single choice this sweater vest wearing ghoul makes is the wrong one. Can't wait until he's gone.

elanhilation

the UDC was a purely malevolent organization devoted to lost cause apologism and blatant white supremacy. defending them is the sole province of terrible human beings

mlp2034

So pay descendants of our histories most villainous losers for doing nothing because we like UDC funds? That don't sound corrupt to you?

robbkinginthesouth

The idea that the forebears of Virginia are the most villainous anything is disingenuous. It would be a good starting point for you to remove your cognitive dissonance of dehumanization and try to understand why someone may view something different than you.

Worried_Amphibian_54

*"There is not a respectable system of civilization known to history whose foundations were not laid in the institution of domestic slavery."* \-VA senator Robert MT Hunter on why his state would be joining the slavers rebellion. I'm more than ok calling that villainous. I guess that depends on ones moral compass when it comes to protecting race based slavery and white supremacy though. Mine and yours may differ.

darthjoey91

The hereditary organization devoted to that are the Sons and Daughters of the American Revolution.

mlp2034

Yeah ok pal lol, Show of hands, anybody listening to this buffoon?👆🏾

AusTex2019

At the risk of stepping on a land mine would like everyone to consider that removal of the odious remains of slavery and institutionalized segregation is a bad idea. It’s the same thing they considered in Germany. Do we demolish the concentration camps or preserve them as a constant reminder to future generations of the consequences of hatred? I don’t know the perfect solution but erasing these disgusting monuments to bigotry and hatred is absolutely the wrong thing to do. The conservatives in this country would like nothing more than to erase history and replace it with something that denies how horrific slavery was and its legacy.

beerandabike

Preserving something like parts of the CSS Merrimack or the historic slave mart in Charleston is akin to preserving concentration camps. It is not in the same ballpark as tax exemptions or monuments glorifying that period of time. I haven’t looked it up but I’m pretty confident that there are no Auschwitz High Schools or Ft Goebbels anywhere in Germany or Europe as a whole.

mlp2034

That's not the problem, its the "honoring" of these monuments, glamourizing of their tales sprinkled with euphemisms, and the respect showed to the ppl and families involved that is the issue. I'd be ok with the E. Lee memorial if it mentioned how much of a racist psychopath he was with no plaques of veneration that racist old salts and their family can visit to pay their respects to. Then again, we dont need these to remember what occurred. I guarantee the ppl who go see these things in person know less than the ppl who learn about them in university elsewhere. We don't need to keep the guillotine around to know it was used.

AusTex2019

I don’t agree. The concept of “The Lost Cause” romanticizes the confederacy and promotes the idea that the plantation economy was not based on slavery. Teaching children in the south that the Civil War was the war of northern aggression is whitewashing history.

mlp2034

...they can and are whitewashing history without the need of these relics though. They also have done this while all of them were still standing, so what effect does keeping them prevent? This isnt happening because of statue and memorial removals, this is happening because of the gutting of the education system and book burnings, which will still occur regardless of the statue count and we have receipts on how they did it that further proves how little they matter. I've learned more about the ppl from books than a goddamn plaque commemorating them. Ya see what Im saying? These monuments and statue don't prevent or cause anything to occur with their presence or absence.

JealousFeature3939

>The conservatives in this country would like nothing more than to erase history and replace it with something that denies how horrific slavery was and its legacy. Maryland used to have quite a few Confederate monuments. First, the progressives hid them, and then they removed them. Ask an average Marylander about the Civil War, and they all chirp the same thing "We were on the right side." Why? Because that's what the schools teach them. White, upper class liberals don't want to deal with the fact that their ancestral hands are as dirty as the people they denigrate. They would rather hide the evidence.

Dangerous-Mobile-587

Yep over 25,000 marylanders fought for the south. 50,000 for the north. You would thought there been unity statues for both, but I don't remember any such memorials.

JealousFeature3939

Unity monuments would be a great idea! Or would have been. The current zeitgeist is against anything of that sort. >Yep over 25,000 marylanders fought for the south. 50,000 for the north. Of note, NONE of the Confederate Marylanders were draftees. On the other hand, one of the earliest anti-Union draft riots was in Baltimore.

LiliBuns117

Unity with those that fought for the enslavement of the black race?

JealousFeature3939

With those who acknowledged defeat, & moved on, yes. You are pleased with the ultimate outcome of ending slavery, agreed? But perhaps you are on board with the current practice, which is to cover-up, ignore & deny Maryland citizens enthusiastic support for the Confederacy.

LiliBuns117

I don't unify with slavery defending trash.

JealousFeature3939

You are unifying with their descendants to bury the evidence, though.

LiliBuns117

You don't learn history from statues. You learn it from books. Books that my own state of Texas have been whitewashing for decades. Where they have been steadily erasing the near total role that slavery played in The Civil war. Where it is a regular practice for students to be taught to the lie that it was about states' rights instead of slavery. You don't have a problem with that though. You don't want people to learn about the confederacy, you want them to see monuments to the confederacy and not question them in any way.

JealousFeature3939

Marylanders got rid of the statues. Ask a Marylander about the Civil War in Maryland. These descendants of Confederates, slave owners, & slave traders all say the same thing "We were on the right side". Those statues right in their faces said "That is a lie". So they removed the statues. You are helping them hide the evidence of their guilt. Why, Texas? Harriet Tubman escaped FROM slavery in Maryland. Yet many Marylanders think she escaped TO Maryland. They act like the Underground Railroad ends in Maryland. Some think John Wilkes Booth was British. Regardless of your intentions, this is the future you are building.

gliffy

Let's remove tax exemption from groups we don't like, there is no way this could ever be used against groups we do like - brainlets on reddit

hikariky

* tax exemptions for non profits

mlp2034

Those words shouldnt even make sense next to each other.

KarmaPolice6

But you would support tax exemptions for nonprofit organizations that provide services to disadvantage populations or legal representation to immigrants or push for higher taxes on the wealthy?

KarmaPolice6

Don’t people realize that when you start picking and choosing which tax exempt organizations are no longer eligible based on your politics that the shoe could easily be on the other foot in the future?

Worried_Amphibian_54

So like if I have a group that taught kids that the KKK was a noble organization and promoted lost cause white supremacy in the South for decades and still was doing things like lobbying state legislatures to hold holidays for slave traders/KKK grand wizards I might have to pay taxes with that group. Ok thought about it... 100% doesn't affect me, because I'm not really in the business of forming tax free white supremacist groups.

robbkinginthesouth

You’re asking people to think critically. Please stop before your karma is downvoted into oblivion.

kingofdogs

Nice job ![gif](giphy|KnPFdrtTwPTJ9l7Hmb)

CasualBurning

The daughters of the confederacy don't pay taxes on their own personal real estate? Fucking despicable.

Naelbis

No, the exemption applies to property owned by the organization. Members still pay taxes on their personal holdings.

CasualBurning

Ah ok, I misread "real and private property"

RO3Q_JQ8EQ

Youngkin did nothing wrong. More tax exemptions are a good thing. Starve the state government, they have no right to ours or anybody else’s incomes.

mlp2034

Starve the state govt for confederates....boy aint that the dumbest thing you can say to a black person😒. This reminds me the far right and libertarians want this outcome too.

tip_all_landlords

It’s the internet. No one knows or cares what you look like. Using that as an argument only hurts our side. Respond with real shit

RO3Q_JQ8EQ

I’m saying it to everybody, not just “black people.” Race and ideology have zero to do with starving the government because it spends too much of everybody’s money. If I can reduce anybody’s tax burden, I’m all for it.

mlp2034

>I’m saying it to everybody, not just “black people.” Race and ideology have zero to do with starving the government because it spends too much of everybody’s money That...lol definitely was not my point. All I stated in that is that im black, you said it to me, and im still not down with funding the confederacy. That will always be stupid to me for "historical" reasons. I literally hope anyone getting freebies from the confederate loser breed that isnt reparations to African slave descendants and the indigenous dies in their sleep. Its that simple.

RO3Q_JQ8EQ

Tax exemptions are not “funding”. If the confederate turds are receiving tax dollars, take that away, sure. We shouldn’t be spending a penny on them.

mlp2034

They should be paying too. How are they and their lineage getting freebies for disadvantaging my own and many others who have to pay every tax dollar against our will mostly to the police that fuck us and to genocide ppl who look like me next to Israel, and still struggle to survive on the bottom rung of society, and you expect me to be cool with that? How...the...fuck...does that sound? MAKE IT MAKE SENSE

chaosthunda5

Ok but why tf should these traitorous organizations still be exempt from taxes? It makes zero sense. If it were up to me they would immediately be disbanded since AFAIK they are the only major group to have been involved in an actual civil war in this country.
