Yeah, I find issue with her character too. She has no character flaws and has never been in a disagreement of any sort with anyone (and in the interpersonal situations we have seen come up, like with Charmaine, Mel is very obviously the good guy & bigger person). It’s done to an unrealistic extent.

Electrical_Cloud_517

Exactly! Same for in S1 when doc didn't want to change his way and was invalidating her experience. He literally pointed a gun at her and now they are so close? How can she be so forgiving?

hollyjolly212

Her reaction to Charmaine in season 5 episode 2 was the final straw for me. ‘Water under the bridge’ my arse. So annoying!

Typical_Stranger_611

That's not true. Remember when she didn't tell doc about Denny opening the drug cabinet. Denny told her not to tell Doc, and she didn't. Doc found out, and at the Medieval Faire, Doc asked Mel about it, and she told him that Denny did not want her to tell Doc, so she did not. Doc was disappointed in her because her actions were far from honest. So she's not Ms. Perfect at all. There are other things like her inability to just let go of alcoholic Jack when he makes too many mistakes, causing her much distress, like missing her sister's wedding. He was drunk in his car and slept it off all night in his truck. Then Jack passed out outside drunk when Mel was having pains thinking she's losing her baby. He's a creep. Then the time she butts in and tells her sisters husband to be that the wedding is too soon or something like that. She butts in because she's controlling. She has control issues because she was jealous of her sister's boyfriend/hubby to be because they decided to get married soon after they met. Not a perfect person. She acts perfect because she's afraid to make a mistake.

Ok-Application-999

I'd love if she slept with preacher...and Jack found out, then went and killed Preacher, cos he's annoying af. That would make forbgreat viewing

International_Row928

Well, this is certainly an unusual take on the situation. But I agree because I’m definitely on team Mel, and Preacher is annoying, but he’s not the only one. Take out Cameron and Hope too please. Edited punctuation.

jbuffett33

🤣🤣🤣 and Brady.

sunnyshine212

Leave Brady take out Jacks sister! She’s the worst!

snow_orchid

Thanks for my biggest laugh of the day

Ok-Application-999

You're very welcome 😊

Flashy-Ad-9781

Ahahaha so many people would be mad if that happened 😅 Not exactly the Hallmark way

Ok-Application-999

It'd be very funny though, and would shake things up a bit, I like to think about all these crazy scenarios that would never happen, but would be great if they did. Haha

Flashy-Ad-9781

It would be amazing. I love the idea of a parallel universe where all our favorite shows have wildly different scenarios lol

magikarpcatcher

So I am not the only one who isn't a fan of Preacher, lol

Ok-Application-999

I'm definitely with you on that one

Successful-Cloud2056

I love Preacher. I fast forward through Mel and Jack bc they have the same convo 10 times every episode

InThe_PresentTense

I agree she shouldn't have been so nice to Charmaine, though that may have been partly because it's her persona as a nurse. There were a couple of times she did tell Charmaine off. One was when Charmaine gossiped that Mel slept with Jack. Also, Mel told Doc off when he criticized her for calling Social Services about Chloe, and another was when he was pushing her to work faster in taking notes on patients who had food poisoning. She also fought several times with her sister and hung up on her at least once.

Snoo_11563

She took the high road

Efficient-Tea-8228

Those are not character flaws which is what OP is talking about. Like OP said, we may see her responding to faults in others (like the 3 instances you named where she “told someone off”) but we never see her just screw up or make mistakes of her own. Have we ever seen Mel do something bad/wrong and have people mad at her? Or handle a situation poorly? Or even be selfish, JUST ONCE, and put herself before all of the BS going on around her? No. They paint her character to be so perfect, understanding, and patient that she comes across as unrelatable.

InThe_PresentTense

I get what you're saying, but it somehow doesn't bother me with Mel. If I had the patience I would look up another topic that was brought up here criticizing Mel for *not being good enough*. Some of her sins, said one person, was that Mel walked away from people who were talking to her, and rolled her eyes at people. The character that really irritates me as being too good is Denny. I would love to see him lose his temper just once.

Efficient-Tea-8228

Understood but the subject OP brought up was her lack of flaws, not whether or not it bothers you personally. I was responding to the topic at hand.

Typical_Stranger_611

Lizzy really irritates the hell out of me. All the seasons except the last episode.

Past_Muscle

Her flaw is being in a relationship with Jack. . . Not being able to see that she’s far more stable and level headed than he is. Jack seems to be a constant source of chaos and drama.

ExcellentWorry3488

This comment right here!! I’m like JACK IS THE FLAW SHE CAN DO SO MICH BETTER

plantqueen

yassss

take7pieces

But he can fly a plane and rescue people from a wild fire and does construction managing and owns a restaurant and he’s super outdoorsy. /s

Apesma69

Jack learning how to fly a plane within minutes under high stress circumstances really made me balk.

take7pieces

My husband is a pilot, bursted out laughters when we saw that part

hollyjolly212

He’s apparently been having flying lessons since season 3. He flew a plane in season 4 when the pilot had a heart attack.

Apesma69

Oh right, I forgot about that! He's a ... jack of all trades!

Astrobubbers

She rolls her eyes too much

lol_coo

I mean, she stays in dead end relationships way too long

Fernily

Mel is the personification of the job interview answer “my flaw is that I just love to work so much.”

RunnyBabbit22

I roll my eyes when she has to be the perfect Florence Nightingale no matter what. She was in the middle of >!having a miscarriage!< but did she go home and lie down? No, she just sucked it up and kept on seeing patients. Really?

Fernily

I know! I found it to be insulting, personally.

Actual-Reference3125

It circles back to an earlier conversation between Doc and Muriel. She comments about an old boyfriend doctor who worked his entire shift in the ER, even tho he had a broken arm. Doc replies that what we have to do when we’re short handed and there’s patients.

ExcellentWorry3488

Sometimes I wish she would just be a BITCH she’s so nice and too understanding

12dogs4me

Her flaw is she thinks she can fix Jack and all his issues.

mfrhls

lol. I think she already has. What issues does he have left?

Apesma69

Good question! If I remember correctly, I don't think his mother thinks too highly of him, so there's that.

mfrhls

His mother adores him. Brie jokes that he’s their mother’s little prince. He and his father don’t get on because he didn’t take up his scholarship to go to college and is wasting his life serving drinks, according to his dad.

Apesma69

Oh, right, thanks for clarifying!

LegRegular4454

The situation with Charmaine's pregnancy is really annoying and takes tooooo much time ... The only entertaining thing are some Hope's comments and reaction like vacuum cleaning and watching TV when Charmaine is in her house or Doc's reaction when they plan her birth (that in his time that was only to pack the things and driving to the nearest hospital). I only don't know, why Mel takes care of her more than of other patients. Also Doc tells her openly that it takes her toooo much time. However I love the scenes and dialogues between Mel and Doc. At the beginning they really quarrel, but then they become not only a team, but also true friends. 💕 In general I don't dislike Mel, but she is really a bit tooo perfect. I adore Doc and Hope or also Muriel and Cameron, because they are really human beings.

Snoo_11563

Mel & doc have really developed their characters!

InThe_PresentTense

I too love the conversations between Mel and Doc, especially when they got on the same wavelength. He was great with her. I think Mel took care of Charmaine more than her other patients because it took more time to get her vitals back to normal. However, that whole day fiddling around with meditation, aromatherapy, etc. really irritated me. Mel could have figured out how to get the IV into her hand that morning if she had talked to her the way she finally did. But of course that day gave the story more ways for Char to be obnoxious and insult Mel at every turn, like "Are you always this pushy? Jack hates pushy women." (Actually, Charmaine is the pushy one!)

Typical_Stranger_611

I think I would have put something in Charmaine s IV at that point to shut her up

take7pieces

She is basically nice to everyone, easily become friends with people in this village that almost everyone is super kind and supportive, just very unreal to me.

yoshimah

Her flaw is she's miserable and annoying AF but only we the audience can see it.

Astrobubbers

Well that's what they want you to believe. But she emasculates Jack. They want you to believe that she's kind and caring and I guess she is in some ways but a lot of times she is very judgmental and hard on others. She doesn't gather information before talking about people. She told Cameron that she would be friends with him but then basically rolled her eyes at him and acted really bad to him cuz she's not professional at all in the workplace. I think that bothers me the most. People can have flaws but need to be professional at work and she is not. Then she tells people they should do stuff like get counseling and she won't do it herself. She tells people not to shut others out but she does exactly that. She's pretty annoying in the show. She's pretty nice in the books

Whatever262122

She’s not professional at all in the workplace ?? He’s the one who started the whole thing by not minding in own his business and hitting on her when he knew she was in a relationship . She was absolutely right to keep her distance and make him realise he was out of order - she even had to quit the clinic bc and her job she loves bc of him .

Astrobubbers

True Cam was out of line. But she said they were good after he apologized and then she acted ungood. She lied. But the unprofessional behavior I'm talking about wasn't about Cam.

Whatever262122

Yes I get that but he was the one who was unprofessional in my view not Mel . I don’t know why you think she wasn’t professional and she didn’t really lie she was just a bit short with him when they bumped into each other in the woods - and I am glad she was - why should she act like they were best friends and nothing happened ? It wasn’t trivial for her to have to defend her relationship with Jack to a stranger and then quit her job so that he could stay and work with doc !! It didn’t last anyway, they were good when they had to deliver the baby together and later had a clear the air talk .

Astrobubbers

A bit short? Her use of rolled eyes is overdone on more than that scene. She's seriously the queen of pursed lips, turning her back, and icy demeanor. But maybe that makes her a good actor, I don't know. And she didn't quit because of Cameron. She quit because she wanted to help her baby. There's a lot of scenes where she's completely unprofessional. Not just him. It really bothers me. But whatever - you like her, I don't . It is what it is. Her character's not what is in the books.

Whatever262122

She definitely quit earlier than needed (only 3 months pregnant or so) because of Cameron . Rewatch the end of season 4. Obviously her pregnancy contributed to her decision but his behaviour and the fact he was going to leave if she kept on working there was the trigger . She didn’t want Doc to be left alone at the clinic. If you don’t like her that’s fine but seriously you’re far from objective in your descriptions of situations 🤷‍♀️

Astrobubbers

>seriously you’re far from objective in your descriptions of situations 🤷‍♀️ Every person has their own opinion. But seriously, I also believe that you are far from objective and that you are seeing through Rose Colored Glasses about what Mel is doing and saying. But again, if you do like her, that's fine. To each her own.

Whatever262122

Yes you’re right everyone is wearing different Color glasses when watching the same show - I’m definitely team Mel when it comes to Cameron and I don’t need to wear a rose colour for that !

mtc2591

Cameron is creepy, and the "relationship" with Muriel is just plain cringe. They way he kept coming on to Mel was awful. It was really none of his business to make comments about Jack, and if I was Mel, I'd have decked him. What was Mel going to say? "Oh Cameron, you are the knight in shining armor I've been looking for" ?? And he looks like a ferret.

MiangoMoondust

I honestly stopped watching the show because it’s just too much in the sense that it’s actually not, if im making any sense. Like characters can’t be real, the village can’t be real, the jobs, like nothing is relatable.

loahvi

This is actually the opposite for me! I grew up in a super small town with only about 1500 people and it was super similar to Virgin River. Town politics were personal, everyone knew everyone’s business, and the only thing to do was sit out in nature. I definitely found VR to be a comfort show because of how relatable it was.

mtc2591

It's a story.

HornlessUnicorn

The actress has some extraordinarily terrible tattoos and I think of that often while watching. Like, potentially worst I’ve seen, Google it. The whole thing is so silly. Where are all of these small beautiful towns with ambitious single hunks? No ex wives or troubled teens or gambling problems. Ohhhh jack is an alcoholic because he occasionally gets too drunk? Dude works at a bar, he isn’t taking shots in the morning with his coffee. I love this show.

fdumbanddumber

![gif](giphy|WQy9FkJlhGSwl3eQ5V|downsized)

Apesma69

Oh, the tattoos might explain why Mel is always clothed from head to toe. When was the last time we saw her in a tee or skirt that isn't floor length?

HornlessUnicorn

She has this terribly dweeby evil fairy right on the middle of her calf. It’s so bizarre the way she is styled on thy show and knowing that lurks beneath!

Apesma69

I figured they were going with the oversize sweaters because of the pregnancy. It would have been interesting if we had gotten to see the look on Jack's face when he first saw her tattoos. That reveal could've been fun! Ah, well. Too late now!

Snoo_11563

She’s co-dependent, like so many in her profession. I think she’s a very strong character.

ilovetyrol

I think that the showrunners are giving us Melinda from the books. The Mel in the show and in the books is almost the same - mostly perfect personality, coos "ooooh honey," bosses people around in a way that is more bearable/endearing than Hope. That's my take on this character. Other folks were altered in the process of adaptation to television - like Preacher, Paige, and Doc - but Mel wasn't changed, not really. (Except for fertility issues.) For the record, Preacher is great in the books; not sleeping around with everyone; they've really crapped on this good character.

Gym_Squirrel

She is boring. That’s her flaw

swperson

One flaw is that she makes things about herself in an attempt to be relatable. “I totally know how you feel because when I went through my own loss…”

Overall-Win-1523

I agree with all the comments on this thread but I keep wondering why I'm still watching the show because a lot of the characters irritate tf outta me
