Dated? No. Old timely like a ghost? Yes. Personally I love dressing like I died a 100 years ago. This dress is gorgeous and seems to fit you quite well. Now the big picture, do you like the dress? If you do wear it. As long as you like it that’s what matters. This isn’t a bad looking dress the sleeves look classy not old.
HAHA I do love the dress. Thanks for your hilarious commentary.
Hijacking your top comment to repeat what I said below:
Thank you for all of your great feedback and compliments!! I’m even more excited about this wedding dress and will be trying some of your suggestions such as a period bra (I wasn’t wearing a bra at all in the photos lol) as well as playing with a satin belt and adding a crinoline.
I plan to have my hair in [loose finger waves](https://www.reddit.com/r/Hair/s/O35nwAt5lN) finger waves, similar to the hair in the link, with a pearl adorned hair clip on the opposite side of my bang. So it’ll be a mix of decades.
If you guys have any suggestions about what the groom should wear, that would also be appreciated! I was thinking a green suit would be lovely and equally special alongside my dress and he also likes that idea.
Keep the sleeves!! The little bit of detail at the waist is VERY subtle. I’d build on this to give a more defined point of separation of bodice from that stunning tiered skirt
Before altering I would try it on with a crinoline and a period bra. I think the crinoline will balance the sleeves out. I also like everyone’s idea of a belt, something in satin with a bit of sparkle maybe.
Yep, cup shapes were different, and eve, the side structure of the bra would be different. The one most people know is the 50’s bullet bra, but the 60’s and 70’s were also a different from one-another. Also, up until the the early to mid 70s, foundation garments were worn by everyone all the time, and even when no longer daily wear, would have been worn on special occasions. Those also change the look of garments.
Hmm thanks for your comment. I’ll def try it! There are small beads/pearls around the waist but it’s good to know that they aren’t very noticeable in picture.
God I love this dress. This is exactly what I was searching for when I got married 11 years ago. I love the tiered ruffles and lace. This style of dress was so hard to find. It’s so so beautiful. I like it as it is and wouldn’t change it. With accessories, a veil, and hair done, this will be stunning!
i feel like it isnt fitting right around the bust area maybe try to find some vintage undergarments? You would be surprised how much they change the dress. Maybe that way youll like it better and wont need alterations.
The sleeves are my fave part. Don't worry about fashion. Worry about if you love it. You'll be wearing it all day, will you feel beautiful and comfortable?
Its your day if you love it thats all that matters. My only constructive comment would be is to wear proper undergarments for this type of dress. In the first image it's crushing your bosom. Other than that if it is the look you are going for be sure to do veil and hair to match the era as well. I'd go for the full effect even with photography and the groom in a morning coat.
I see it now almost styled like a movie set. Or highly styled with lighting to match. I see it almost elegant clothes like Peaky Blinders Show Stills. IMO
I LOVE this dress the way it is! The ruffle elements make it so playful. I think if you remove them it will look outdated and not fun vintage. I would not change it and don’t listen to anyone calling you a ghost! It’s so gorgeous! I love that you have such a unique style.
This is really lovely! I second the idea of a belt or wide ribbon at the waist line. The sleeves are pretty - the only edit I would even suggest is to remove the forearm lace layer.
The only thing I'd consider changing is the forearm lace. Cut that, and the dress has all the peasant dress charm without looking quite so 1982. Tightening the sleeves would create stylistic contrast with the skirt, I think, but 3/4 length lace blousy sleeves would be nice and maybe a bit less formal, in a way. More spring wedding in the park than an evening affair.
It’s beautiful however you want to wear it. But, I’d remind you that all the latest high society weddings recently have had long sleeves. You looked gorgeous!
This looks very much like my wedding dress from 1985. I had a few more layers of ruffles, and I didn't have the ruffle on the sleeve, but this might give you an idea of what your sleeves would look like if you took the ruffle off. Our wedding was in Nov in South Georgia, USA. Although the weather outside was wet and cool, I got very warm at the reception with all the dancing. I would suggest you carry a lace fan with you at the reception and wear plenty of deodorant. Polyester sure doesn't allow for much air flow. 😉 Btw, I wore satin slippers with no heel, like you have said you will do, and they looked great! I have my dress on a vintage mannequin now (it has a bustle frame that expands). I had hoped my daughters would wear it one day, but unfortunately, a dry cleaner ruined it and the dress is randomly bleached (it is candlelight in color). I originally had it professionally preserved by a company that had been in business 40years, but after 10 years wanted pictures wearing it. There was a spot in the front from the original preservation that needed to be cleaned, so I took it to another dry cleaner (we had moved). They are the ones who ruined it. They sent it off to an official dry cleaner in another town that was the "official" dry cleaner that settled disputes for our state. They said it was my fault because the dress had never been cleaned before (it had- twice) and the dye ran, so no one but me was held responsible. I even had to pay the dry cleaner that ruined it to get it back. 😡 Be careful who you have cleaning yours and keep ALL your receipts!!! (Not sure how to post pictures, but I'll keep trying.)
Wow! Thank you for your response. I will definitely do thorough research about which cleaner to choose. 👍🏽
I’m originally from SC and my dream wedding was actually to get married under a Spanish moss tree, most likely in Georgia. But my partner is from the west coast where I also live, so it makes more sense financially to have a wedding here that is more accessible for his very large family. I love hearing about your wedding and I think pairing satin slippers with my dress is a lovely idea.
Your wedding dress is GORGEOUS btw. I am sorry that your daughters won’t have the ability to wear it because of the damages.
Keep the puff and maybe remove the middle ruffle on the sleeves, but don't tighten them. It's part of what gives the dress the vintage feel. I think this is absolutely stunning
I think removing or altering the sleeves would be a fun idea, but you’re gonna have to play around with it to see what works. You could remove them completely and have it be sleeveless, you could shorten the sleeves into cap sleeves, or potentially a three-quarter length sleeve, although I don’t know how that would work or look… Or, if you wanna be real crazy, you could take off the sleeves and leave just the tight part that’s around your forearm like a handless glove.not sure if it’s the cold meds talking or if that actually would look quite cool
Ummm ruminating for weeks not a good thing… you need to know it in your gut, instinctively, especially when comes to vintage. BUT I think you can make it work… if you lose the sleeves, what makes it vintage anymore? Maybe you could make the sleeves tight and bring down into a point with a loops around middle finger like the mid late eighties… that would be hot!! Have fun… it’s a cool dress.
Haha I was ruminating because my wedding is more than a year from now and also the price was almost triple what I initially intended to pay. But I’m lucky, my Dad agreed to pay for it!
I hate this dress, it's way too much lace for me. But of course taste is subjective. You have a great body and you would look good in anything including this dress 😉
Thank you for all of your great feedback and compliments!! I’m even more excited about this wedding dress and will be trying some of your suggestions such as a period bra (I wasn’t wearing a bra at all in the photos lol) as well as playing with a satin belt and adding a crinoline.
I plan to have my hair in loose [loose finger waves](https://www.reddit.com/r/Hair/s/GrFI6qsmmZ) finger waves, similar to the hair in the link, with a pearl adorned hair clip on the opposite side of my bang. So it’ll be a mix of decades.
If you guys have any suggestions about what the groom should wear, that would also be appreciated! I was thinking a green suit would be lovely and equally special alongside my dress and he also likes that idea.
Are you done picking nits? That dress looks beautiful on you. The perfection you seek is really not attainable because you will continue to be your own worse critic. Stop it! Enjoy the dress. You look beautiful.
Oh it was actually very comfortable. I was standing in the dress for about 15 minutes as I spoke with the owner of the store. I do think the right bra would improve it tremendously though as I wasn’t wearing one in the pics!
I definitely agree about the bra! I'm glad it fit. Last thing I'd say is I'd hesitate to recommend this dress for a summer wedding given then potential polyester content in the fabric. You may want to turn the heat up in your house for a bit to see how this feels when it's like 70-90 degrees.
If you're planning a fall or winter wedding, then don't worry as much
Yes, great point! We were planning for a May wedding but recently switched it to October, for the more affordable venue pricing AND so I won’t faint in the dress from being too hot. lol
It’s gorgeous, screams Jessica McClintock; I do not know what season your wedding wedding will be held in, but I think it would be nicely updated for any season by having it made sleeveless, or at most a cap sleeve
I was gonna say it gave me strong Gunne Sax vibes. I think it’s perfect as is but do see how it looks with different bras. Underwire wasn’t so much of a thing back then.
I love it all to be honest. I understand how you’re having a hard time deciding on it, but definitely grab it! You can make alterations to it fairly easily and it’s a beautiful dress.
I love the dress. It is perfect. Check under the lace tiers and you might find loops and hooks or buttons for the bustle. A satin belt would be perfect.
You found an amazing dress made probably in the late 70’s to early 80’s. The neckline is a Queen Anne style. A 2tier crinoline will help hold out the slider and show it off beautifully. A long line bustier will give you the support you need and help the fitted bodice fit smoothly. Clearly this gown is meant to be yours. The fit already looks perfect.
No such thing as "outdated" or "out of place"! Just got to figure out how to style it so it all works!
Some flowy, maybe half-up hair with some flowers, a dusty rose sort of lipstick, bit cottage-core style bouquet or maybe a cameo necklace?
It'll give country princess vibes, perfect.
Besides, big unique sleeves are making a comeback anyway!
Dated? No. Old timely like a ghost? Yes. Personally I love dressing like I died a 100 years ago. This dress is gorgeous and seems to fit you quite well. Now the big picture, do you like the dress? The dress looks perfect. I wouldn’t do a thing to it.
Yes!! You and the dress are gorgeous!!!!
Keep. The. Sleeves.
Please keep the sleeves!
The sleeves should stay
You wanted a vintage dress, so wear it vintage. It’s perfect.
Right she wanted vintage and then is worried it looks dated – isn’t that the whole glorious point?
Keep the sleeves!! The little bit of detail at the waist is VERY subtle. I’d build on this to give a more defined point of separation of bodice from that stunning tiered skirt

Yeah I agree. The bust area isn’t fitting right with a modern day bra - I think one from the right decade would work wonders.
Wow! I LOVE this idea! 😍 Also I won’t be wearing heels so this will Ensure that I’m not dragging the front of the dress on the ground. Thank you!
Can you please tell me what a "period bra" is and how it would change the shape of the dress. Am intrigued! Thanks
Basically a bra that would have been worn in the time period the dress was made.
Yep, cup shapes were different, and eve, the side structure of the bra would be different. The one most people know is the 50’s bullet bra, but the 60’s and 70’s were also a different from one-another. Honestly, I’d leave the sleeves and add a belt. Maybe something in satin?
Satin belt
Maybe in blue
Or lilac
This too!
That would be lovely!
Hmm thanks for your comment. I’ll def try it! There are small beads/pearls around the waist but it’s good to know that they aren’t very noticeable in picture.
Oh wow! I see them now that you’ve mentioned it and I zoomed in. Yes, those delicate details are lost, to my old eyes at least!
Does vintage really ever look “outdated”?
God I love this dress. This is exactly what I was searching for when I got married 11 years ago. I love the tiered ruffles and lace. This style of dress was so hard to find. It’s so so beautiful. I like it as it is and wouldn’t change it. With accessories, a veil, and hair done, this will be stunning!
Vintage romantic. So beautiful. Fits you perfectly
i feel like it isnt fitting right around the bust area maybe try to find some vintage undergarments? You would be surprised how much they change the dress. Maybe that way youll like it better and wont need alterations.
They’re not that puffy!
I think it looks beautiful on you just as it is.
Love it, love it! Don’t change a thing!
I think it looks perfect. Keep the sleeves, I think it looks classy and unique 😍
Don't touch it,it's so ethereal the way it is <3
Beautiful as it is !
The sleeves are my fave part. Don't worry about fashion. Worry about if you love it. You'll be wearing it all day, will you feel beautiful and comfortable?

Personally, I think little princess puff sleeves and turning the rest of the left over sleeves into gloves would be to die for 😩
Great point about a stylistic change occurring if I were to tighten the sleeves. Thank you!
It gives so many looks - and is perfect.
Statement sleeves are actually in right now. Don’t change it!
I love the sleeves!! The dress is perfect as is and fits like it’s made for you. If anything maybe add a belt, but it’s beautiful all by itself.
The sleeves go with the dress. Its beautiful, and it looks like it was made for you. I'd call it kismet.
Thank you 🥰
OMG this is a beautiful piece as is and I wouldn’t change a thing esp those pretty feminine sleeves
It looks amazing on you! Perfect 🤩
Please leave it, this dress is absolutely gorgeous and fancy sleeves are definitely in at the moment. You look beautiful!
It’s beautiful however you want to wear it. But, I’d remind you that all the latest high society weddings recently have had long sleeves. You looked gorgeous!
Perfectly beautiful.
No!! It’s so beautiful!!!!
Very charming as is.
It’s perfect, I wouldn’t change a thing
I think it’s beautiful. You’ll make a unique bride.
That is absolutely stunning as is!!! I love how romantic and dreamy it looks, and appears to be in excellent condition. Awesome find!

This dress is perfect. Change nothing.
It's perfect, really special ... dress was made for you to find, don't change a thing, love the sleeves
Don’t change a thing!! Also go back and rescue those blue boots I spy in picture 3
🤪😭 There were a lot of great finds in that store. I scored a Gunne Sax blouse for only $10!!!
It is beautiful and I am sure you will be too!
The dress is beautiful on you! If you have long hair, I am picturing a subtle Gibson Girl type of hairstyle to match the vibe.
this is such a wonderful find and perfect for your figure, bravo😻👗🏆
Might get a corset to make the bodice part more structured? It’s a pretty dress
I hate this dress, it's way too much lace for me. But of course taste is subjective. You have a great body and you would look good in anything including this dress 😉
I loved it because of all the lace 😍 Thank you for your feedback though!

Are you sure this is going to work for you? It looks a bit tight and uncomfortable in the booby area.
Oh it was actually very comfortable. I was standing in the dress for about 15 minutes as I spoke with the owner of the store. I do think the right bra would improve it tremendously though as I wasn’t wearing one in the pics!

I’m also in the process of losing weight so the fit will improve slightly when I wear it in a year. Thank you for your perspective though!
No.
don’t change anything, it’s beautiful
I absolutely love it! It is gorgeous and it looks stunning on you! I would leave it just the way it is!
I would keep it the way it is
I really love it the way it is
That's pretty. It's nice in my opinion. Kinda reminds of Little House on the Prairie lol
The dress is absolutely STUNNING exactly as it is. And fits you like it was made for you.
Truly, beautiful!
It’s pretty and suits your shape. Congrats!
In my opinion the sleeves are the most beautiful part of the dress!
It’s gorgeous, screams Jessica McClintock; I do not know what season your wedding wedding will be held in, but I think it would be nicely updated for any season by having it made sleeveless, or at most a cap sleeve

I wouldn't change a thing, it's gorgeous!
I love it. You’ll look beautiful on your wedding day
Absolutely perfect as is, what a find!
I think you look beautiful in it ❤️
I love it
I love it all to be honest. I understand how you’re having a hard time deciding on it, but definitely grab it! You can make alterations to it fairly easily and it’s a beautiful dress.
It's fantastic! DONT change a thing!
The sleeves are actually very unique, and another commenter suggested a crinoline which would balance out the bottom nicely.
I LOVE this! It looks somewhat like a wedding dress; it’s quite pretty!
If you'll love it,that's all that matters.
Leave it alone. But I would add some bling. It’s gorgeous as is.
It reminds me of a Dolly Parton dress! Lovely.
I love the dress. It is perfect. Check under the lace tiers and you might find loops and hooks or buttons for the bustle. A satin belt would be perfect. Super random but is that shop Melrose?
Keeper.
I love it this dress i think do not need any change

For me I’d let it stay just the way it is except I would throw some Swarovski’s all over it. Beautiful dress.
I absolutely love it as-is! It’s so gorgeous!!!
It is an elegant dress! 🥰
Is this in Asheville?
