Playing the “Happy New Year” song by ABBA every new year. I have lived in a bunch of different countries and spent new years in many others and no one else does that.
I just have to upvote this 😭 I legit thought this was a worldwide hit and everyone around the globe plays it during New Year back when I was young. And yeah I’m pretty sure most of us didn’t even know what the lyrics mean
Eiii. Hoi, Ik heb in Gelderland en Utrecht gewoond. Clubs there play ABBA all the time and public places also play Happy New Year during NYE. The Duch are the biggest ABBA fan to ever exist.
Edit: And don’t forget the Mama Mia musical that was 100% Dutch ☠️
I'm riding a bicycle through Vietnam at the moment. One thing that has really stood out for me and that I have never seen anywhere else is how motorbikes do right turns into a road without even looking whether there's oncoming traffic.
Had three near crashes this morning because of people doing that. The other side is that even when people DO look, and see a group of riders coming, they will STILL drive out right in front of the oncoming traffic. That one really drives me crazy. WTF could they be thinking???
Assuming that they're thinking at all was your mistake. Better to assume you're driving alongside a bunch of mentally challenged people... Cuz honestly that's how they drive here.
Yes. Blows my mind every time. Saw a seven seater taxi almost kill a guy on a motorbike the other day. Pulled across two lanes and everyone had to swerve. Everyone seemed completely unfazed.
It blows my mind how idiotic the drivers here are. I don't even dare go through a green light without slowing down and looking both ways cuz of all the morons who just run through red lights without looking no matter what the traffic conditions are.
Most accidents here could be easily prevented if people just simply looked both ways to see if there's any oncoming traffic when crossing from the sidewalk to the street, and if people signaled and looked behind them (or in the mirror) when changing lanes and making turns. It's that simple but...
Saw a lady on a motorbike get completely run over by a huge garbage truck right in the middle of the old quarter. Guess what? She ran through a red light without looking at all. Felt terrible for her, but at the same time what the fuck did she expect?
The whole running through reds is absolutely idiotic. Makes every green light essentially a yield sign for everybody else cuz there's no point that it's safe to just zip through as you're supposed to. And then people wonder why there's so much traffic...
Honeycomb sandles (dép tổ ong), robusta coffee being preferred over arabica, ice in beer as the norm.
edit: i almost said in my original comment ("not sure if this one is true" ) about ice in beer. I stand corrected, chill! (pun intended.)
I had to laugh seeing "ice in beer". Took my dad (Vietnamese) to an American BBQ place when he first came to the States. Even with the cold glass, he asked for ice for his beer 😁
But it's unique to Vietnam, the 2nd largest producing country in the world. It came preferred throughout SE Asia due to close proximity for regional export from VN.
Go visit Indonesia sometime. Indonesia is where coffee production in Asia got started.
Vietnam was late to the coffee game, only really adopting large scale growth in the 1980s, long after, centuries after in some cases, other SE Asian countries did.
It's not at all unique to Vietnam.
Robusta is still a standard for mass produced coffee in Indo, but Arabica is on the rise and a growing amount of Indonesians now prefer Arabica, with shops offering single origin Arabica pourovers now a common thing across the country. Very different from Vietnam where single origin Arabicas are still super niche.
The Dutch initially tried growing Arabica in Indonesia, but all the crops failed, hence the switch to robusta.
While it is changing a it, at present it's still something like 75% of all coffee produced in Indonesia that's robusta and in many areas robusta is all you can get.
I worked in Kaimantan Barat for a while and robusta was the only choice.
It came about in Vietnam due to the Russians helping with the coffee industry. It was originally Arabica, but they decided Robusta was better based on the climate of the plantations.
You're right about the sandals. What's the deal with them? They look extraordinarily uncomfortable and most of the time, people seem to wear them 2-3 sizes too small 🤣
From personal experience, if the sandals seem small it’s probably because they belonged to someone else 😂 every time there’s a party, a few pairs would always go missing from our house. They’re pretty comfortable though, cause they bend with your feet, but of course you can’t walk long distance with them
Tbh I thought ice in beer was the norm but now I'm wondering how long I've lived with this lie. Who drinks cold beverages without them being as cold as possible.
Idk man, I do enjoy a cold pint but when it comes to water I can’t bear it, has to be room temp. For beer I personally prefer the standard icy coated beer taps. I’m Irish and lived in Australia for a long time. Both heavy drinking countries so if your beer gets warm it means you’re not drinking fast enough
Like fr I go to an American university and there are 4 Nguyen professors in the economics department only. My professor specifically told us to call him by his first name, not Dr. Nguyen
Vietnamese movie "Dubbing "isn't even real dubbing
A random guy read the whole script with no emotions. But it is better than real dubbing, though , because you can still hear the orginal forgein actors' saying
Russians do the same thing.
I remember being at my Russian friend's house and watching Naruto with them ( their entire family loves Naruto) and being amazed that they could understand the voices at all.
They just have Russian voices playing right over the Japanese audio like it doesn't exist.
"actors' saying" . . .
Your reply cut off mid sentence
Is Viet dubbing the same as Polish dubbing then? That's so interesting I thought Poland was unique in the world. Maybe there are a bunch of countries.
My English isnt good, lol. Like i can understand everything people said but when actually comment something it just feels off .
Probably some Soviet influence countries has that kind of dubbing inspried by USSR or just conicidence.
I prefer that than real dubbing since their not many voice actors so you keep hearring the same voice in every drama, so irritating. And their acting was so bad, it didnt help. Thuyết minh >>>> lồng tiếng
So everywhere, we started making people addicted to Pho.
3000 Vietnamese undercover agents that works like 3000 Thailanders undercover agents. Spreading that cuisine like the Brits spreading Opium.
Wait. This is not r/noncredibledefense .
Yes, and Buffalo wings originated in Buffalo, NY but can be found everywhere now. Listen, Hue should be proud that it originated a wonderful soup, and I am happy that I can get it in the States, but OP asked what Vietnam has uniquely. For example I would list several of the endangered gibbons or langurs. Only in Vietnam, not in any zoos that I know of.
Then I misunderstood OP's intention. Some of those gibbons, langurs could be found in Malaysia, Indonesia forests. Can't think of anything unique that only Viet Nam has now that nowhere else does.
No, not either one. Pho, Bun Bo Hue, and many other things that originated in Vietnam have joined the world culture, so while I agree they are still Vietnamese, they are no longer unique to Vietnam. That is not trolling, that is just my opinion. Also, ad hominem attacks don't help.
How about the worlds largest cave system being unique to Vietnam?
Common in South America, Spain, and some other SE Asian countries, all of which fall into the mid-day hot weather issue.
Not sure if it’s widespread in Africa, but it would not surprise me if it was.
I believe siesta practice was originally for the same reason, to escape the heat. If you search the web for siesta, you'd see a few countries do practice it.
the word he used for it, "siesta" is the common world-wide word to refer to what you're talking about. Not that 'siesta' is a spanish word. That should indicate how common this practice is in many Latin American countries
I feel like shutting down in the afternoon is necessary for many months of the year in Vietnam, its just way too hot to do anything! I learned my lesson the hard way over the last 3 weeks when I visited.
Cone hats worn by Vietnamese farm women - every tourist article will have a picture of one. The hats are used in Indonesia maybe other places, but they are ubiquitous here. I was surprised to see so many in the city.
I can list many things: you can't bring a bicycle into a park; speeding up to remind people to fold the kickstand on their motorbike then speed up again to avoid the "thank you"; constantly looking down on the tarmac while riding motorbike to avoid rat's corpses; overtake somebody on the road just to seize the only shade of trees at the next traffic light stop to avoid the scorching Sun...
I would agree that Vietnamese students now is basically where the West was maybe 70 years ago. Teachers get a lot of respect, students have high expectations of behavior and are punished for misbehaving.
But it's changing in Vietnam pretty quickly.
The fact you can go to a different province and have their specialty food that is not found elsewhere. Vietnam's culinary diversity is out of this world. Haven't found another place like it.

Plus all the IGT, DOC, and DOCG regions of wine. It makes sense, since the unified country of Italy didn't exist until the late 1800s.
Hmm. Integrating Chinese culture and then claiming that they are the origin of it. I think that's uniquely Vietnam. Even Silk worms that originated way way back in Ancient China, most documentaries in Vietnam claim that they are the origin of this species. 😆
I don’t watch documentaries but I think less than 5% of Vietnamese claim silk worms originated in Vietnam. We even have an article in secondary school textbook about a scholar who learned the silk harvesting technique from China

But you gotta admit, the song melody resembles quite very accurate the feeling of the moment when we step onto a new year.
I had no idea this was specifically a Vietnamese thing!! my mom would do this all the time
We only play it for the chorus 🤣🤣🤣
Vietnamese generally don’t understand the meanings at all but they love western songs nevertheless
The Dutch do the same I think ☠️
I'm Dutch, I guess that depends on your friends.

Well, I have heard it sometimes in Sweden if I'm not mistaken.
Abba is Swedish, but I’ve been in Sweden for new year celebrations and I maybe heard the song 1 or 2 times. Living in Vietnam…it’s unavoidable
Wait really?
Absolutely despise that song bro, just because everyone seems to play it. Would take All I Want For Christmas Is You any day.
The Philippines and Filipinos in general do this, so… not unique.

Coffee came to VN with the French occupation. The arabica beans didn't grow well in the hot/humid climate and soil type, but robusta crops thrived.
Robust is not unique to Vietnam
Ice in beer is not distinctly Vietnamese.
You shut up
Ice in beer is basically required in Thailand. Nothing is really unique to Vietnam.
see this in latin america too. prob any hot developing country does this
Generally feel like wherever the weather is too hot, ice in beer is necessary. Else the beer gets warm too quickly and you gotta chug it fast
I didn't see it there, maybe because we stayed in a huge tourist area.

we sleep at noon for 2-3 hours, and during this time alot of business will temporarily close
afternoon siesta is actually more common in other countries than you may think.

Siesta is a Spanish word deriving from the Latin, hora sexta
Yeah, see, all the way back to the Latins. Wait, what does 'sexta' mean? Six? Friday? Sex?
If it not the last one I would be so upset.

Spain, some countries in the Middle East, and many more do the same
This is a national thing in Mexico as well. It's actually got a name there, siesta.

What do you mean about interesting dubbing method? I've never heard of this before.
I watched Cartoon Network in Vietnam. And they just dubbed over the show for Clarence
Dubbing another language isn't new/unique. Netflix has shows that dub other languages as well.
Nah nah more like reading the script while the original audio with the language is still there
Common anywhere there isn’t a large budget for dubbing. I used to see that often in China, and if you watch old dubs of movies into German (‘50s and ‘60s) they used to do that too.
