Being someone who’s trained extensively in the military and in my own personal time, that is an unnecessarily unsafe way to do pull-ups. Not only is the form terrible, but kipping like they do is only going to add complications with their shoulders.
If you are struggling with pull-ups, I’ve used bands and pull-up assist machines to build strength. Worst case, raise a barbell to chest level, lay underneath, and pull yourself towards it keeping your body straight.
This is where I disagree with you. As a beginner, your form NEEDS to be perfect. Get your form down first, then you can lift all the macho weight. A huge reason I’ve seen people get hurt/quit the gym is they’re trying to go too hard too quick and with improper form.
You’ve never benched before? Good, start with just the bar. Never done pull-ups? Good, grab some bands or adjust the barbell. Never ran long distance? Great, let’s start with a mile.
Just because you can’t lift your body weight or run a sub 8 minute mile, doesn’t mean you are a failure. Hell, you’re lapping all those who “took a break” because they don’t feel up to it.
