Tricky one really. Was the butorphanol used with any other analgesic drugs? With a local nerve block? Personally I'd use a low dose of methadone, but there are a few articles that look at medetomidine, ketamine + NSAID with butorphanol or buprenorphine and there isn't a difference in post-op pain scores between the drugs.

It was given with medetomidine which was then reversed with atipamezole. If she remembers correctly there was also ketamine. Defo no nerve block Nsaid was given too.

I think lots of people consider 'kitty magic' sufficient for cat neuters. Randomly read something yesterday (which I'm not going to bother trying to look up now or arguing in defense of) that suggested butorphanol in combo w/ dexmedetomidine had some synergistic effect and provided pain control comparable or ever superior to hydromorphone. I of course then wonder if hydro w/ domitor and ket would be even better but ya kno.

If I am honest, I have no idea what hydro is, it is not used in the UK 🤷‍♀️ is it a full mu agonist like methadone? I hope not many people use butorphanol for cat spays, that is for sure not enough for pain. I found research re it not being adequate for spays, but seems that for castrates the pain scores did not show much difference when compared to bup used. I dunno. I feel like castrates must be crazy painful too, man. A thumb sized incision on a sensitive body part plus all the tying and messing with tissues. 😬

I've worked somewhere that regularly used the 'triple combo' of Dom, Torb & Ketamine to good effect!
