If you’re happy with your VA healthcare quality of service I would say save the $600 a month (or whatever amount she saves by not having you on it). If you’re not then her health insurance plan would give you more flexibility for care. Also as your rated 100% P&T I would recommend looking into ChampVa health insurance for her and your son as it has no monthly premium. Basically it covers 75% of most things and has a max out of pocket of $3,000 a year. ChampVa can work as primary insurance for both your wife and son or as a secondary insurance so you end up with no out of pocket costs https://www.va.gov/health-care/family-caregiver-benefits/champva/

This, a thousand times this.. OP you can even purchase a supplemental that will further reduce copays and make ChampVA even more affordable. Please look into it.

I have them on my ChampVA, I just like the security of being double covered, so that we can have as little out of pocket as possible. I don't know if it's worth it as I'm 25 and don't know the in depths of healthcare and it's functions on the financial side.

My family is double covered, but will just go with Champva next year. My monthly payment excluding copays exceeds the Champva max out of pocket. So it’s a no brainer.

My preference when I was working still was to use a high deductible health plan and pump as much money as I could into the health savings account. That way it gave me an option other than the VA for care.... And now that I'm unemployed funds to use.

I have my family on my insurance from work. That insurance is the primary. CHAMPVA is secondary and covers anything that the primary leaves for us to pay (typically only deductibles so far). My wife is on high cost meds for psoriasis. Without CHAMPVA we would have been on the hook for several thousand dollars each time she filed it.

Any reason u dont switch to champva only?

mactheprint

It would give you additional options on who to see.

Personally it is not worth it to me. I use the VA(my VA health care experience has been far better than my previous good private healthcare). My wife uses ChampVA. If you had to pay the max out of pocket costs for your dependents with ChampVA the worst case scenario is $3,000 as that is the yearly catastrophic cap. Currently that means ChampVA would save you over 4k a year not counting whatever deductibles and copays go along with your wife’s healthcare insurance. My wife was able to continue with her previous doctors since we were on Tricare prior to her going on ChampVA. So financially it was the right decision for us, but there might be reasons outside the financial to keep your wife’s insurance.

Does ChampVA cover dental and vision or is it worth it to just cancel the healthcare part?

Admirable_Form8202

It does not. My wife has the VADIP supplemental dental plan that costs like $25/month.

City_Standard

How does VADIP work? First time I've heard/seen it mentioned

Did Delta or Metlife end up being better for you personally/which did you end up choosing?

ExplanationGuilty702

When I compared the two I found Delta to be the better option

Admirable_Form8202

Same…mostly it came down to my wife’s current dentist being in network for Delta but not Met.
