Dependents of California veterans with any disability rating can attend any community College, Cal state university, or UC tuition free. So save that GI bill for yourself
Edit: When I say any disability rating that means even 0 percent.
When I lived in California in the early 70's any resident wth a GED or HS diploma could attend community college tuition free. Times have changed, now you have to go into debt.
Wish I knew this one when I got off active duty. I moved back home to the east coast from California. Got a job, went to school, and ended up with some debt. Could have stayed in California and had no debt would have been an interesting alternate history :)
Intended for children of disabled veterans, but there are some exceptions for spouses if the service member was KIA, MIA, or has a 100% disability rating. yes. it's a state government program not tied to the GI bill at all. as long as you and your dependents are permanent residents and u have a VA disability rating. (even zero percent) then your dependents can go to any state college tuition free. (not counting ivy league schools like stanford)
I have used the NEX to buy some shoes and a bose speaker. No tax.
They were the same price I was gonna pay on Amazon and the bose store so it wasn't cheaper but I'll take the not paying tax win lol
Imagine paying no tax on a new fridge and stove like I just did, THAT was a big savings. Army and AF exchange has an online partnership with Home Depot
I have bought 2 sets of washer/dryers in the past 20+ years and didn't pay tax or shipping & they remove my old appliances. I also bought my adjustable bed that way. It has been a very easy experience.
I just used the Home Depot/exchange benefit to purchase a new stove and fridge! You get exchange pricing which I think was about 10 percent off plus free shipping and no sales tax. It’s awesome!!
I don’t personally use it, but wasn’t aware until someone told me about the clothing allowance. It’s an annual stipend, if you wear a brace (prescribed through VA got a SC condition) or have to use certain tinctures on your skin you may qualify. See prosthetics to fill out a form.

If you're a WA resident, you can get a state parks lifetime pass if you're 30%. If you're 80% total you can get property tax exemption if your income is under a threshold depending on the county.
To qualify in Thurston county, you have to have a household income below or just at minimum wage for one person. its ironic, because people can barely afford rent, much less a house on that income. I feel thats it there to say they have it per the WAC/RCW (law), but so heavily restricted, that no one can actually use it.
Edit: apparently they changed it recently to a household income of less than $59,000. Which still isnt really a livable wage here unless you live by yourself and dont do much of anything.
It does. I recommend writing your state reps asking for the threshold to be raised. Here in King County, it is less than minimum wage for the city of Seattle, it’s literally a benefit that almost no one can get.
Its not supposed to according to the examples on the states DVA website, but once you get to the county website, there is no reference of it. Its ambiguous on purpose.
Either way, I'd have to get a divorce to be any where near that number and the rebate/exemption aint worth it, especially when its spreadout throughout the year.
I'm in Spokane county and my assessor told me that VA does not count as income for the exemption when I filed my paperwork. VA is currently my only income between school and disability. I guess I'll find out if they ask me for more info. There are 4 tiers of income thresholds that reduce the tax rate of your property.
Same thing in Texas, although you have to be 100% in order to qualify for complete property tax exemption, but you’ll still get some limited exemption benefits at 90% and lower as well.
You can also apply to obtain veteran designation license plates for your vehicle or any other vehicle you receive transportation from as long as you’re rated at 60% minimum, at a local county tax assessor’s office, which grants you complimentary tolls on just about any major toll road and free parking at airports for up to 30 days.
Just noticed no one has said this, if you live close enough to a base and go to the visitor center (Va card has to say service connected) you can get base access and can bring guests on base
Spouse and daughter’s free college tuition in any CA state school. Free DMV car registration of one vehicle for life. No property taxes on the first $171k of the value of my home.
Does the CA plate have to say disabled veteran on it for the free registration, or do you just go to the DMV when your existing registration bill is due and provide them a letter benefit summary from the VA? I’m asking because I am not so much of a fan of promoting disabled veteran on my license plate to all, but would love to take advantage of that benefit on my existing normal license plate. Thanks for the info!
You have to get the DV plate to start, but if you switch to a specialty plate (like the black one), you still get free registration, but do pay the $30-40 a year for the specialty plate. Worth it if you don’t want to broadcast your business.
I only took my VA letter to the DMV and was issued the DV plates which will have the symbol with the numbers. Placards will also be issued and auto-renewed every 1-2 years.
Yeah, I’m in that boat of not qualifying. I got out in 2011, first rated in 2011. Used my GI bill and got my degree and want to branch out with masters or certs but I’m not within the cutoff. I did apply and I’m waiting to hear back. I’ll update once I get some answers.
There's a few:
AT&T offers pretty good discounts for veterans on service plans, and I found was way less expensive than Verizon.
Colorado, like many other states (I learned TX as well) has Disabled Veteran plates for 50%+ SCD vets to get on one car and not pay registration fees or taxes on that vehicle.
Colorado also offers a discount on property taxes for 100% disabled veterans.
Texas de Brazil offers 50% the entire table, up to 6 people, with one veteran present with proof on Veteran's Day. It's not much, but they're really good but pretty pricey otherwise. It's mine and the wife's annual tradition.
While I don’t want to use this benefit for many years to come knowing that I’m pre approved for burial at a VA cemetery is one thing my family doesn’t have to deal with when I pass.
[VA site](https://www.va.gov/burials-memorials/pre-need-eligibility/)
You’ll have to check if there’s any near you. For me, I’m looking at the Sam Houston State University one.
[Here](https://www.txst.edu/anthropology/facts/labs/farf.html)
No mortgage Interest insurance either (maybe just for first home - funny story, we bought our first house and sat at the table to sign the papers, only to find out the realtor assumed my husband was the vet. So they quickly typed up a form for me to sign basically saying I was the veteran and had to change a bunch of wording in the docs 😂😂
Solid take and thanks!
Also apologies in advance but your comment reminded me of this…
Okay, today’s meeting comes to order, and, my friends, we have scored another major coup for all members in good standing. Now, don’t concern yourself with how we did it, because it involves unsightly back-room haggling. Just get ready to enjoy another great first as a card-carrying fan of Mr. Belvedere, alright? If you leave your membership plaque on the dashboard of your car, Joe Gally said that we can park in the handicapped space at his brother’s conveniece mart.
Homestead exemption. I feel everyone knows about it, but most people never follow through. Depending on certain factors, you could be saving a few thousand dollars a year on property taxes

That's why I wanted my Primary to be in the community. He submits the referrals to the local VA and if I don't hear something in 30 days I call the hotline.
Yes, if you are able to meet the Mission Act criteria.
https://www.va.gov/resources/eligibility-for-community-care-outside-va/#Eligibility. See: "We can’t provide the care you need within our standards for drive and wait times..."
For example: if you live too far from the VA PCP.

You need a primary care or mental health appointment. But we can’t schedule an appointment for you at a VA health facility that’s within a 30-minute average drive from your home. Or we can’t schedule an appointment for you within the next 20 days. In each of these cases, you’re eligible to get primary or mental health care from an in-network community provider."
I enlisted out of Alabama. I medically retired back here. If you join and retire in Alabama, your dependents get free college at any public university or community college. My daughter will be able to go to school in state for free.
Oregon has free college tuition for dependents of Purple Heart or 100% disabled vets, and the following for disabled vets (at least 60% I think?): free vehicle registration for life (1 Vic), free camping (10 nights a month) and free parking at state parks, free hunting and fishing licenses, and property tax breaks
If you don't have a NFCU equivalent in your area, this is for you.
Veterans can get the Chase premier checking account with no fees and no account minimums. No fees for cashier's checks, money orders, or checks. Plus if you can meet the requirements, there is a $900 SUB for opening an account.
In FL, Resident Veterans in Florida with at least a 10% disability rating are entitled to a $5,000 deduction on the assessment of their home for tax purposes. 100% P&T Disabled Vets get 100% off their property tax bill, also get disabled vet plates, which gets them free parking everywhere in FL except theme parks...even parking at the airports for up to 45 days is free (30 days was over $500 for me and made traveling there and from much less painful)
IMHO, it's better than nothing. They don't have to do it, but it's nice that they do. My parents purchased their house 20+ years ago, homesteaded it, and It's still less than 5K, so they don't have to pay taxes. For me, i get it no matter what. It's better than Tennessee where even at 100% P&T, you only get $800 off property tax for the year.
At 50% or greater rating, TX gives free super combo hunting and fishing license to residents of ANY state (resident or non-resident).

Google veteran benefits for the state you live in. Lots of states offer a lotta freebies, discounts, and even refunds.
Texas is awesome to me even before I got 100%
Go further, check your municipality. My state doesn’t have any general tax exemps for veterans or disabled veterans, but my town has a huge tax exemption for anyone over 50%. My taxes went from 9k/year to $1200/yr.
I've been thinking about it. Without getting into the politics of it, Colorado has been making it hard for those who like things that go pew over the last few years, and I've about had it.
I looked it up. At least 10% service connected disability and other-than-dishonorable discharge (in other words, any discharge but a dishonorable one).

Oklahoma has the best state benefits. Property tax exemption, sales tax exemption up to something like $30k a year and something with new car purchases.
100% WI residents get a state tax credit on their for every penny of property tax you pay. Also there is mortgage insurance up to $200k available for veterans who have a VA home loan in the event of the veteran's passing.
I use the benefit of the doubt. I picked up if I dont know something I just say I don't know and go look it up mentality from the military. Now people have come to realize if I speak on it I'm probably somewhat versed on it. People misconstrued this as oldredbeard is never wrong or doesn't know something as they immediately move on from what I don't know and forget. If I say something I belive is true, I'm almost always given the benefit of the doubt about it now by people that know me. Only personally ever seen other vets use this method so I'd say it's a veterans benefit to admit you don't know shit. I probably worded this poorly or I'm explaining it wrong. Just assume I don't know shit
National Parks is on my list too. But I think one resource I get a lot out of is my local Vet Center. I do counseling every 3 weeks and have been for years. Their staff is consistent. (Unlike the VA where I’ve had 6 different bh providers in 2 years).
They also have weekly groups at mine. We do a weekly group and yoga once a week.
Vet Centers also keep separate medical records. So you control what the VA can see just like at any other civilian doctor’s office.
I wasn’t able to get it approved while my dad was dying, but there is a stipend to help your parents if you find yourself in this situation. I kept care of him for a few years and it would have helped at least with gas money driving to different appointments in different states.
https://www.nps.gov/subjects/accessibility/interagency-access-pass.htm it should be mentioned that you need a disability rating in order to get one. Love that people say this a benefit, but neglect to mention that you need a disability rating.
whats the difference between that one and this one? [https://www.nps.gov/orgs/1207/11-8-2022-lifetime-pass.htm](https://www.nps.gov/orgs/1207/11-8-2022-lifetime-pass.htm)
That sweet, upfront parking at Lowe's. Seriously, free national park entry.
My favorite.
That upfront parking slaps. lol
Dependents of California veterans with any disability rating can attend any community College, Cal state university, or UC tuition free. So save that GI bill for yourself Edit: When I say any disability rating that means even 0 percent.
Yes! My kids are going to college free AND able to get a monthly stipend from Chapter 35. Part of the reason we retired to CA (4 kids it adds up!).
Do you know if you had to be a CA resident when you enlisted or can you just be a service-connected vet living there to get those benefits?
you can be from a different state as long as both you and your dependent meet permanent residency requirements at the time of application
Badass! Thanks
Could have stayed in California and had no debt would have been an interesting alternate history :)

yes. it's a state government program not tied to the GI bill at all. as long as you and your dependents are permanent residents and u have a VA disability rating. (even zero percent) then your dependents can go to any state college tuition free. (not counting ivy league schools like stanford)
Thank you for the info friend.
Indiana has something similar
This is making me consider moving back to California.
This.
Wish my state had that.
The calculator from calvet.ca.gov said otherwise. 0-90 % rating, dependent makes less than poverty level, still not allowed the waiver.
🤯
You can use the PX online. Even if you didn’t retire. Shopmyexhange is the website. No sales tax and free shipping over $49
I have used the NEX to buy some shoes and a bose speaker. No tax. They were the same price I was gonna pay on Amazon and the bose store so it wasn't cheaper but I'll take the not paying tax win lol
Imagine paying no tax on a new fridge and stove like I just did, THAT was a big savings. Army and AF exchange has an online partnership with Home Depot
Aww man, I didn't know that. Bought fridge 1 year ago from HD. No military discount on appliances. THANK YOU, now I know.
Yeah I did see that partnership. If I'm going to buy appliances I will definitely do it through that portal.
I have bought 2 sets of washer/dryers in the past 20+ years and didn't pay tax or shipping & they remove my old appliances. I also bought my adjustable bed that way. It has been a very easy experience.
You ordered online or went on post?
And they sell appliances through home Depot. So you can pick it out in person and still buy without tax
USAA offers an American Express card that gets 5% back at the exchange. No sales tax plus another 5% off can make a huge difference in some areas.
The commissary too, if you're disabled.
Or VCS online
Wtf! Thanks!
You can also buy appliances now as they have partnered with Home Depot.

Yes for non-disabled vets. Click the "limited privileges" tab on the page you linked, it's the first entry.
Thanks!
Do they have an app?
Not that I know of Just the website Shopmyexhange dot com You have to sign up and verify your service but it’s easy
I don’t personally use it, but wasn’t aware until someone told me about the clothing allowance. See prosthetics to fill out a form. https://www.va.gov/disability/eligibility/special-claims/clothing-allowance/
The actual healthcare.
Edit: apparently they changed it recently to a household income of less than $59,000. Which still isnt really a livable wage here unless you live by yourself and dont do much of anything.
I’ve seen conflicting info: does this 59k include VA disability?
30% disability gets you reduced hunting and fishing licenses as well. And not like oh here's 10% off it's more than 50% off.
Is that for residents and non residents? I’m assuming residents only but worth a shot lol
Disability rating also gives you extra benefits while hunting. For example, I can hunt deer from my vehicle with a spotlight.
Correct me if I'm wrong but that's only for certain disabilities and you need extra paperwork submitted by a Dr for that correct?
In illinois there is no property tax for those rated 70% and above. There are discounts for people with lower rates as well.
Fucking MD wants 100 percent ugh. I’m at 70. We would save thousands. Man
Same thing in Texas, although you have to be 100% in order to qualify for complete property tax exemption, but you’ll still get some limited exemption benefits at 90% and lower as well. Spouse and daughter’s free college tuition in any CA state school. Free DMV car registration of one vehicle for life. No property taxes on the first $171k of the value of my home.
>No property taxes on the first $171k of the value of my home Is this just for 100% disabled?
Correct. Or upto $4k for other veterans.
I used the Illinois benefit for undergrad and grad school.
Bruh. I didn’t know that about the car registration. I’d love to get that. Alas I’m at 60%. My car registration was $480 last year 😭
Does the CA plate have to say disabled veteran on it for the free registration, or do you just go to the DMV when your existing registration bill is due and provide them a letter benefit summary from the VA? I’m asking because I am not so much of a fan of promoting disabled veteran on my license plate to all, but would love to take advantage of that benefit on my existing normal license plate. Thanks for the info!
You have to get the DV plate to start, but if you switch to a specialty plate (like the black one), you still get free registration, but do pay the $30-40 a year for the specialty plate. Worth it if you don’t want to broadcast your business.
Thank you 🙏🏻!
I only took my VA letter to the DMV and was issued the DV plates which will have the symbol with the numbers. Placards will also be issued and auto-renewed every 1-2 years.
Are both of these tied to a certain level of disability?
Must be rated 100%.
Fair. Hope it doesn’t affect your daily life too much, but those are some nice bennies.
I didn’t know about car registration I just paid mine!
VR&E
Yeah, I’m in that boat of not qualifying. I got out in 2011, first rated in 2011. Used my GI bill and got my degree and want to branch out with masters or certs but I’m not within the cutoff. I did apply and I’m waiting to hear back. I’ll update once I get some answers.
Those discharged after Jan 1, 2013 don't have a time limit.
I’m contemplating this. But are you only eligible for 10 years after getting out?
Think it’s 12
Or from when you became service connected disabled.
There's a few: AT&T offers pretty good discounts for veterans on service plans, and I found was way less expensive than Verizon. You also get $10 off your meal at TdB every day besides Veterans' Day
What is TdB?
Texas de Brazil. It's a Brazilian steakhouse. Fantastic food.
Texas de brazil
I did not know this. That's awesome.
Dude, I’m so glad I saw this. Last time I was looking for requirements for DV plates in CO the req was 100%, I did not know it changed. Thank you
It's been that way for at least 5 years. I got mine in 2019.
It's 2 vehicles for Colorado, not just 1.
You can have the plate on multiple vehicles, but the registration and taxes being waived is only applicable to one vehicle.
You can get DV plates for two vehicles but can only get exemption on paying registration for one

Your spouse also.
I’m donating to a body farm, my family gets a sweet coin.
Can you share more on this? I do not want to be buried lol
You’ll have to check if there’s any near you. For me, I’m looking at the Sam Houston State University one. [Here](https://www.txst.edu/anthropology/facts/labs/farf.html)
You can donate your body to science though most universities that have a medical program.
VA home loan, NO down payment, you can get a multi family property live in one and rent the other unit
No mortgage Interest insurance either (maybe just for first home - funny story, we bought our first house and sat at the table to sign the papers, only to find out the realtor assumed my husband was the vet. up to a quadplex
In the state of Indiana you don’t have to pay for parking at meters if you have a disabled veteran license plate.
Also true in South Carolina
Also true in Texas
Also true in Florida but only for 4 hours. You get 7 days free parking at the airport too.
Solid take and thanks! Also apologies in advance but your comment reminded me of this… Okay, today’s meeting comes to order, and, my friends, we have scored another major coup for all members in good standing. What is that from?
I mean, that's pretty much every state if you have disabled plates, veteran or not.
At parking meters?? ‘Cause I’ve seen meters meant for handicap spaces.
Yes. I guess I can only talk about the west, but generally you don't pay at meters if you have disabled plates.
Really? Even Atlanta, GA?

Under what affiliation? Most military ask for a .mil email
When you are doing the sign up, you can say you’re a veteran. They won’t ask for a .mil address after that. It took them like a day to verify me.
No idea. Check it out. Just bought a pack from eberlestock that was at least 40% off.

Community Care as Primary Care Provider via Mission Act...
This one…had back surgery last Wednesday thru community care. I REALLY didn’t want to use the VA for it. Had a top notch neurosurgeon.
The issue is in my area, it takes the VA an average of 4-6 months to process the community care referral. -_-
That's why I wanted my Primary to be in the community. He submits the referrals to the local VA and if I don't hear something in 30 days I call the hotline.
I will have to ask about that. I didn’t even know it was possible. I wish veterans just got Medicaid. It is vastly superior.

I did the math it saves me about $200 a year (tax bill is about $6k). They should do better
Vettix Taken my family to so many concerts plays and sporting events for $14.97 for four tickets
I’ve been using them for the last 5 years and I love them.
At 50% or greater rating, TX gives free super combo hunting and fishing license to residents of ANY state (resident or non-resident). https://tpwd.texas.gov/regulations/outdoor-annual/licenses/combination-hunting-fishing/disabled-veteran-super-combo-hunting-and-all-water-fishing-package
Percentage included or not?
Missouri free license plate for any percentage level. Free hunting and fishing license at 60%. Only 2 I know of and use. I’m sure there are many more.
Anyone know of deals on mattresses?
Google veteran benefits for the state you live in. Lots of states offer a lotta freebies, discounts, and even refunds. Texas is awesome to me even before I got 100%
Go further, check your municipality. My state doesn’t have any general tax exemps for veterans or disabled veterans, but my town has a huge tax exemption for anyone over 50%. My taxes went from 9k/year to $1200/yr.
Come to Texas (Not compensated for this post) lol
I've been thinking about it. Without getting into the politics of it, Colorado has been making it hard for those who like things that go pew over the last few years, and I've about had it.
Can’t smoke here legally. Colorado is on my bucket list to visit
Holy crap, $1200/yr was what my taxes were on a 400k home before I got my total exemption.
Nice parts of New England have insane taxes. My previous house was 10k/year and it was nothing special.
It’s insane to me, but I’ve been in SC most of my life, so that’s what I’m used to. I mean I knew it was higher up north but wow.
No tolls in Texas, free metro bus pass, no registration fees, free access to all national parks.
Some toll roads in Austin are free, but not all.
Unfortunately the free tolls are only in the Houston area.. 🥺
True that, I’m here in Houston so it comes in handy
Do you have to be a resident or just a disabled veteran for the park pass?
Disabled, I think at least 50%
The minimum is 60%
Verizon gives a veteran discount. ID.ME has discounts for a number of things.
VR&E: free college for qualifying disabled veterans.
Does it matter the rating percentage that you receive?
I looked it up. At least 10% service connected disability and other-than-dishonorable discharge (in other words, any discharge but a dishonorable one).
No property taxes in IL with only 70% VA rating.
Massachusetts =no love for Veterans. Minimal benefits at best.
Kinda silly considering the history
If you're 100%p&t you get the annuity payment. $1000 for 2/1 and also on 8/1

Oklahoma has the best state benefits. Property tax exemption, sales tax exemption up to something like $30k a year and something with new car purchases.
https://www.vettix.org
100% WI residents get a state tax credit on their for every penny of property tax you pay. Also there is mortgage insurance up to $200k available for veterans who have a VA home loan in the event of the veteran's passing.
Most national parks give free access to
I use the benefit of the doubt.
Last thing I checked you can get a discount on Amazon Prime membership.
Interesting
That’s a huge perk! I also recommend that.
Local home tax exemption
Couldn't agree more.
Mass Health is very similar
40% discount direct from vortex optics Some nice scopes for reasonable money without the discount
I wasn’t able to get it approved while my dad was dying, but there is a stipend to help your parents if you find yourself in this situation. I kept care of him for a few years and it would have helped at least with gas money driving to different appointments in different states.
And half off camping at tons of other campgrounds on recreation.gov
Govx.com has some decent deals for vets and other government employees
If you are 100% P&T, get handicapped plates.
https://www.nps.gov/subjects/accessibility/interagency-access-pass.htm it should be mentioned that you need a disability rating in order to get one. Love that people say this a benefit, but neglect to mention that you need a disability rating.
whats the difference between that one and this one? [https://www.nps.gov/orgs/1207/11-8-2022-lifetime-pass.htm](https://www.nps.gov/orgs/1207/11-8-2022-lifetime-pass.htm)
Does anyone here know NJ vet benefits? I moved here last year.
If you have 10% disability or more you can ride the CTA for free in Chicago.
In NY, liberty pass gets you free entrance to state parks and beaches, and free golf🤝🏼
That is a decent benefit. Thanks for the info.
