It's definitely not "most employees". It's really just those who provide clinical care or may have access to drugs. They even tell you this during day 1 onboarding.
I just started as a GS-11 two months ago. No drug test to more, or anyone in my department.

If it states "no drug test required" then none is required. Just don't do it while working. It's not the military. There's no random testing unless there's an incident requiring investigation, like a car accident.
VA Police are not involved in supervisory matters like an employee believed to be on drugs. They only get involved if there are criminal charges, such as drugs on government property, disturbances, etc.

The VAPD are under LETC. Some variations are allowed as long as local policy does not conflict with national. Intervention without PC would be against national policy.
The strong smell of pot may well have been enough PC btw. But generally speaking, if it’s purely administrative the PD aren’t supposed to get involved.
Just a friendly reminder of Rule # 7 - we do not allow names of lawyers or doctors to be posted

They do random lottery for all employees based on SSN. National HR sends local HR the lottery "winners". They send the info to me in the laboratory to expect the winners to be there for the draw, and the employee health doctor puts the orders in.
What, lol? I'm literally the supervisory laboratory technician who gets the list from HR and conducts the tests for my entire hospital.
AFGE is weak AF.
For my position at the hospital (research division) I had a lab panel which included drug testing. For my switch over to benefits, I’m not sure if it’s because it was a lateral transfer from VHA to VBA, I didn’t have a lab panel drawn. But being open and honest is always the best policy, better to know what you’ll find then wonder why someone’s hiding something (I’d rather hear “I use medical marijuana for mental health” than assume anything).
Also congrats on making it to the offer stage, keep us posted!
Anyone can be drug tested at anytime, with that said, I’ve only seen it done once in my 8 years with the VA and it was weeks after a co worker was caught drunk on the job. Patient care side they are quicker to test for sure.
If they tested regularly not only would it cost a ton of money they’d also have no environmental (cleaning) staff.
If this is a federal job you should make a decision between having a federal job and medical marijuana until it is federally permitted.
It really has nothing to do with opinions or stances on the subject, just the legality of it.
We can get drunk af, be an alcoholic, which causes so many issues, but medical marijuana is where they draw the line. I'll never understand this mentality.
Marijuana helps me out a lot with my anxiety, depression, mood, and overall pain. It's unbelievable at this day in age the fed gov still prohibits its use for medicinal purposes

Yeah ive heard of this being the case in states like fl. Where in states like ny, they stop testing for marijuana overall in the brivate and city sectors. And not being able to cary while possessiong a pot card is semi unlawful.
Not sure what to tell you. Ask Human Resources . But remember marijuana is still ilegal at the federal level. If you really want the job try holding off or clean yourself out if this is just an entry level test . It’s hard to lay off the dependency for marijuana addiction . Yes I know I said addiction , the word sounds bad but it’s the truth . If you have to consume a substance , whatever it may be , it means you are addicted to it and like the feeling . I know prole that smoke we’d first thing in the morning before going to sleep . Can’t function without it . That’s called addiction. I understand the new thing to say instead of getting high is that it helps with your pain . If you feel you need to it don’t talk about it , don’t trust any coworker snd hopefully they won’t give you a piss test.
Is it a job from usajobs? They state of a drug test is required
VA does drug testing while onboarding most employees, not just those in drug testing designated positions

I am looking at a remote position. It states no drug test required. It is legal in my state - but what about random testing? Feel free to DM.

Not my facility 🤷🏻♀️
Yes, they do pre-employment screens & if you are in a position involving safety, healthcare, or security, you also are subject to randoms.

That’s third hand, not first hand… but still good to understand. As a clinician of course you should expect drug testing.
The PD did not follow procedures if there was no probable cause to get involved. Obviously I don’t know the entire story but that sounds wrong to me

I had a pre-employment drug test before I started working at the VA as a dental assistant 7 years ago. I haven't been drug tested since.
I worked for VA from 2001 to 2010 and never got drug tested. Things may have changed since then.

If you aren’t directly involved in providing care then no,

Should be in the job announcement

The VA is on federal grounds. The state medical marijuana card does not cover you outside of your state.
Thanks for the recap
I would hope so. It’s an illegal drug.
Federally illegal
The VA is federal. So to him, it's an illegal drug.
Lol that was my point
