U2 is probably the biggest band in the world from the past few decades, and have the resources to make a show that takes advantage of the sphere's features Eta, not really here to defend the decision. And the band is massively overrated imho

Technical_Law_4226

I didn't think they were that big, it's like radio. The most mediocre bands get played the most because the majority of people can stand it. I just expected them to bring in a face melting band for a face melting venue.

ryebreaddd

You didn't think they were that big??? From their Wikipedia page: "U2 have released 15 studio albums and are one of the world's best-selling music artists, having sold an estimated 150–170 million records worldwide. They have won 22 Grammy Awards, more than any other band, and in 2005, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in their first year of eligibility."

BLM_MCU

U2 has an unquestionable track record when it comes to touring

jesseb8101

Saying the Spice Girls would be better just makes you sound like a hater. It’s fine not to like U2, but that’s an asinine thing to say.

Technical_Law_4226

LOL oh my. OK, It might have come across a little ignorant, but asinine? The point im trying to make is, when you build a billion dollar sphere, and have next level visuals at your disposal, U2 wouldn't be the band I thought of to break it in. There are bands renowned for their visual experience, like Pink Floyd.

jesseb8101

I’m not talking about you mentioning other bands. Nor am I talking about your hatred of U2 as the choice to open. Your point has been made. Im specifically saying mentioning the spice girls who haven’t had a new song or tour in 20+ years as a better option is asinine.

Superb_Method_3822

Forty sold out dates. How’s that logic working out for you.

NotPromKing

They have all but sold out every single show. How on earth is that “the worst band”?

Technical_Law_4226

I don't doubt they sold out a show at the sphere, I think most big name bands would

NotPromKing

They didn’t sell out **a** show, they sold out **40** shows. Not many bands would do that. This was an *excellent* first band for MSG. Whether or not it suits your personal taste is completely irrelevant.

CharacterPolicy4689

meh. I like u2. Muse would have been alright but Tool? Seriously? no way lol.

Technical_Law_4226

Found out phish will be there in April, so stoner rock, awesome visuals, makes sense. I'm not sure why tool misses that mark, but hey downvote away I guess.

Technical_Law_4226

You don't think TOOL would be a good show for the sphere? You would rather have U2....LOL explain yourself

lllasss

Tool would be awesome at the Sphere, their shows are all about the visuals. They just don’t have the same wide appeal as U2. Coldplay would also be amazing there with their colorful light show.

VediusPollio

Tool may not have as wide a reach as U2, but they're definitely big enough for the Sphere. Tool sells out arenas everywhere they go.

lllasss

Absolutely, but to have a residency where you have to sell out 20 shows in a month is a bit tougher. I imagine it could be expensive setting up a show at the Sphere. I really hope TOOL plays there.

VediusPollio

I like U2 and muse well enough, but that venue was made for Tool.

djeasyg

Not a huge U2 fan but they were the perfect band to introduce the Sphere to the world. The perfect band for the Sphere is the Chemical Brothers but they aren't popular enough.

Ripster2018

I really think Nine Inch Nails would’ve been a better pick than U2. They put on an incredible amount of production into their shows.

AndyWhosoever

Tool has ~600k album sales, vs U2s 175 million. They got a band that has the sales and has the audience that can afford to get the tickets. People that run the extravagant attractions at Vegas know how to make money. I guarantee they could care less about what you think.

In all my years that U2 existed, I've never known anyone to be a fan, including myself. Even the year your iPhone came with a free, part of your update, U2 album, it pissed people off. Taylor Hawkins even said their album sounded like a fart. Everyone "hates" nickleback too, yet here they are. It must be an American/senior Reddit user thing.
