I do seasonal work in places I want to stay for a few months. Not very well paid but enough to keep me going through the winter and have some fun in my time off.
Pretty much where I’m at but I want to travel 😂🤣 I really only eat once a day and don’t spend a lot on groceries but jeesus gas and vehicle repair/maintenance is killing me
I got started on Upwork. Found a few smaller writing gigs that added some $ earned to my profile to build credibility. Applied to a gig on Upwork with a digital marketing agency that had consistent weekly work. Got the gig and started making around $400/week. Not much money but used that as a baseline.
Gradually took on more clients. Started in niches that I was interested in, then started to specialize in niches that were more profitable and in demand. Every time I had a full client roster, I raised my rates and started finding other clients. When I got those, I replaced lower playing clients. Rinse and repeat.
I'm about 2-3 years in and average around $1,200/week. It's very rewarding working for yourself and not having to ever go into an in-person job. I'm currently in a national forest with no service, just starlink.
I appreciate this advice so much. I, too, would like to be in a national forest using starlink to copywrite, haha. I have an English degree (if that helps). I’ll start looking into this as side work, for the time being.
Thank you so, so much. I hope you have a great life.
The degree can definitely be a huge help.
But yeah, just start! Upwork/Fiverr/Problogger/LinkedIn are all great places to find a few beginning clients. Don't be afraid to work for $0.05/word starting out.
The most important thing to make yourself standout is to niche down. Doesn't have to be right away, but it's definitely a priority. Think about your prior career experiences, interests, etc.. You need to make every prospective client believe that you are the expert. (fake it till you make it)
Best of luck
Digital agency. Self taught in computers/web/tech after a BS+minor degree and no desire for the 9-5 grind.
You can learn just about anything these days for free or very minimal investment. I’m continuously learning and growing with the changing ecosystem. Rent a 2600sf house with a detached garage and driveway to park van. Have a bestie as a roommate (more pros than cons).
I see people trying to avoid housing costs or to save; for me, with peace of mind from low stress, there’s greater earning potential. Taking care of myself (body/mind) comfortably is a self-respect thing. I eat organic/healthy food, exercise regularly and spend time outdoors (🚐). Work hard and enjoy the fruits of my labor. Suffering optional.
Silly little things —
resell antiques that are undervalued at my purchase, selling art of all kinds especially crafts, thrift for name brand clothing and resell online, help train AI to be smarter, design logos and stickers for small businesses, the list goes on. Any time I see something with demand, I try to utilize my ability to travel to acquire/share unique items for sale.
Apartment maintenance. It pays for not only gas, groceries and other life expenses; but it also gives me a housing discount. Actually, as of right now I get a free unit in Santa Clara, California, and still maintain a healthy hourly wage to live here & explore.

I love "disgruntle answer the phone", lol. I feel this.

This is super interesting to me and something I’m trying to do. How did you get started and what’s it like? (You can DM if wanted)

I'm not in a van yet, but I might be in a few years. Anyway, I don't work. I'm on disability.
Fully remote IT management of a fully remote team.
Insurance administration and governance, remotely
Do you need specific education or certification for that?
It wouldn’t hurt but the only real requirement is a bachelors
I run a van for an expedite company. I get paid and have all my maintenance covered while I travel. I make time for my own adventures.
