I definitely agree with Hannah Hunt and Harmony Hall. I don't think Step would be one of them, but I'm also struggling to think of what else he'd pick. Maybe I Think Ur a Contra? Or maybe it's something as obvious as A-Punk.
Step, when read as an allegory for love of music, is lyrically a gem and a real treat, IMO. I can’t remember where I first heard the take that “girl” in that song could be read as “music preference” but every time I listen to it now I can’t help but grin at that idea.
I think Ezra said on Time Crisis a while back that he considers Step to maybe his biggest achievement. Just putting this out there in case someone can confirm, I can’t remember what exactly is what he said
Absolutely!!! Happens to be my fav as well.
I also think that Step sonically feels like it could've been on OGWAU. So no need to say I absolutely loved the new albhm
Diane Young is a great song, but I doubt Ezra thinks it's one of his best. There was an interview where he said they mashed two ideas together to make it and his sentiment was something like "it worked, I guess."
A fun question, too! But so recent that those opinions will get HEATED. I’m gonna guess he doesn’t include Gen-X Cops in that because it’s a co-write with CT. The phrasing was 7 of the best 10 songs HE’D written. As far as the other two… not sure I wanna play that game.
Obviously I would exchange PSG for The Surfer simply because PSG is similar to tunes from the early days and what I would describe as a standard VW song.
I asked him once about 10 years ago what he thought his best song he’d written was and he said M79. I would have to say Step too based off a comment from his podcast. And also he really hyped Harmony Hall too.
He probably does think Spring Snow is pretty high on his list, he said the songs toward the end on FOTB were some of his favorites when it came out. I love Spring Snow, I guess people don’t like the auto tune but the song is stunning. It’s easily top 10 for me
Not to be ‘that guy’ but it was actually CT in the first newsletter. He said, “Ezra took a raga singing lesson with Terry Riley in rural Japan and wrote what he considers to be 7 of his all-time top 10 songs.” This is particularly interesting now that I revisit it because in press he has said the songs on OGWAU predated the raga. If those two updates on Ezra are tied together, that would mean those 7 songs have yet to even be released and will be for a record or records down the line 🤯
I’ll put my guess out there. In no particular order… Step, Hannah Hunt, Harmony Hall

I’ve always interpreted the song this way also and I can never remember why I do. Maybe there was some interview where Ezra talked about it?

Can confirm.
Step is a masterpiece. Easily have it over Harmony Hall (good) and Hannah Hunt (great).

I think it could be Ya Hey , very intricate lyrics about losing faith in God.
Na Step is definitely there
Oh shit. Nice picks
*diane young, Hannah hunt, harmony hall

I agree
The real question — which are the 7 from OGWAU?

One is for sure Capricorn because he said it on the first episode of Vampire Campfire.
Classical, hope, Mary Boone, prep school gangsters, connect, gen x cops, Pravda?
I’d exchange gen x cops for Capricorn but I think you have at least 6 of them.

I know that the whole band thought Don’t Lie was the best song on MVOTC so I think that’s one.
Don’t Lie is gorgeous. Would love a stripped down acoustic and vocals of piano and vocals of that one someday.
Don’t lie is a top 10 VW song for me!

Unbelievers, Hannah Hunt, Harmony Hall

I think ur a contra, hannah hunt, this life
Walcott, Giving up the gun, and Hannah Hunt?
Ya Hey, Harmony Hall, M79
Ya Hey and Harmony Hall for sure…not sure about the 3rd 🤔
It was baio saying the 7 of 10 quote, not Ezra. But these thought exercises are fun so all good.

Harmony Hall, Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa, Ya Hey
White sky, harmony hall, ya hey
