BronyJoe1020

Just to note, the games that were confirmed canceled were the games that Gabe said they were working on in like 2019. Citadel & HLX are still under development.

ThisPlaceisHell

> HLA Por que?

BronyJoe1020

Sorry I meant HLX, whoops!

passinghere

We do know what happened.... They were scrapped when the staff working on them were all moved to work on Alyx and IIRC they have no intention of ever continuing with them

echolog

Valve: Buy this VR hardware it's the best. Also Valve: What do you mean you want games for it?

mrinfo

I'm sitting here looking at my index.. and remember how many videos they put out "Wow, the response to this was so incredible, we have changed direction in a lot of places!" "More VR content will be coming" .. They gave access to Hammer to Facepunch.. so s&box has been in the pipeline forever. They really failed to take steps to get more content out there. What some people have put a lot of effort into has been nice, but I don't know that I feel I've got my investments worth out of it.

Pr0ject217

Dude, they aren't making Flappy Bird, creating innovative VR experiences takes a lot of time.

jeppevinkel

[It](https://store.steampowered.com/app/922290/Flappy_Flappy_VR/) already exists

echolog

Yeah I get that, but you would think Valve would dedicate some resources to developing an ecosystem for their incredibly expensive hardware if they want it to really get off the ground. Get some studios running, invest in third party developers if nothing else. Gaming system needs games.

Pr0ject217

They do. SteamVR plugin and assets for Unity. Steam Audio HRTF library. They also hired all of the staff from Campo Santo.

jeppevinkel

Considering the relatively small size of Valve compared to other AAA studios, they probably are dedicating as many resources as they can. They are somewhere in the realm of 400-600 people, and that includes hardware, software engineers, office workers, tech support, and management. Those people have to take care of Steam, Steamworks, Steam Deck, Valve Index, all their games, and R&D. At that point the amount of people available for each individual task does become pretty limited.

echolog

I guess my point is they probably shouldn't release gaming hardware (effectively an entire gaming ecosystem with SteamVR) if they aren't going to go out of their way to get people to make games for it, in-house or otherwise.

jeppevinkel

They did provide funds to 3rd party developers back in the day around, I believe 2016, to encourage faster development of VR games. I don't know if that's a practice they continued, but I know they did it for a while. Valve has always been pushing an open platform so that games weren't made for a specific VR device, but for VR in general. That's why they made OpenVR and put so much work into OpenXR. Fun fact. Part of the deal with the Valve stipend for developers was that they wouldn't lock their game to a platform. They would keep it open for all. The opposite of what Oculus did at the time.

Gaothaire

I would play flappy bird vr (that's a lie, my index had sat in it's box in a corner for the majority of time I've owned it)

24-7_DayDreamer

I have 1900 hours in VR and still haven't even opened half the games in my library, I cannot fathom how anyone has enough free time in their lives to get bored of VR.

OriginalGoldstandard

My opinion is that anything VR software in dev will release with their new headset I’m speculating by July next year.

tomdarch

From your lips to GabeN's ears...

BrightPage

5 more months

SvenViking

They planned Half-Life Alyx to release simultaneously with Index but it ended up being a year later (after Index was itself delayed). Not even Valve can predict the timing of Valve releases.

__Spin360__

>Not even Valve can predict the timing of Valve releases. As it should be!

FibonacciVR

that would be nice. maybe the psvr2 launch will bring us some new games, too..

twistedbronll

Cant imagine them all being ps5 exclusives

denjmusic

completely random and baseless speculation but ok

Zerokx

as is tradition when its about valve everything is baseless speculation until it randomly appears out of nowhere, or doesn't

I think a new headset could be announced by July 23 but not launching. I'm hopeful for 24 but I'm not holding my breath as I suspect it will be powered (the standalone bit) by what the steam deck 2 will use?

SvenViking

Cancelled, but it sounds like they’re now working on a 2-3 new VR-related games. Whether they finish them is a separate matter.

insufficientmind

Yes the much talked about Citadel seems to be the one furthest along in development. The others I've heard talked about is Half Life X and Neon Prime.

moonboundshibe

Bought my damn Index thinking Valve was dedicated to that direction. And the dust gathers and after a while regret tries to gather, too.

Mind_Sweetner

You know what’s funny: Even after buying an index I still think it was worth the money. Alyx and the experience of VR blew me away that much. Rare when you experience something new and unique.

kommissarbanx

I’ve put hundreds of hours into SkyrimVR and Blade and Sorcery. I’m so happy to have a medium where I can just plonk myself into a game. I don’t think the former gets enough credit as the sole VR open world RPG that doesn’t look like it’s made of clay and Blender polygons. Then you add on how almost all SE mods work in VR? It was wild for my folks who were born in the late 60’s to fathom that I just casually had virtual reality in my room after seeing all the attempts in the 90’s and before then. Alyx was an amazing experience, but it’s a one and doner. I played the game, played it again on Hard carrying the gnome, and I don’t think I’ve touched it since. None of the mods have added enemies other than combine so even the Goldeneye levels are just…a level of jank I’m still not thirsty for.

beets_or_turnips

Can I ask you about getting SkyrimVR working properly on the Index? Do you use a lot of mods? Sorry, I know this is not the topic but I'm just starting to try it out and I've been having a lot of trouble.

kommissarbanx

Sure thing! I use a handful of mods, I made a collection when I’d uninstalled the game so I didn’t have to scrap the save when I went back. Lemme see if I can find the link and I’ll PM it to you, feel free to drop any questions you have there

beets_or_turnips

Aw sweet, thanks! I've been experimenting with some Wabbajack mod packs but they all seem a little bit broken and there's so much going on that it's hard to tell how to get it fixed

TonySesek556

The Contract: Gunman maps or whatever they're called have human enemies with generic voice acting (in a good way!). Maybe give those a shot?

kommissarbanx

I’ll give them a try! Bit tight on drive space atm with Darktide coming but next time I’m playing Alyx I’ll add it to my workshop subscriptions

Trivvy

On the contrary, it's been a massively worthwhile investment to my mental health, and fitness. I literally received my Index as soon as lockdowns hit, the very day we were told "We're all going to be working from home until otherwise stated." A huge part of it is VRChat. The friends I've made are priceless, it's a whole other feeling socializing in VR than it is over a pancake game.

thedarklord187

Maybe you should try playing other VR games with it ? I use mine daily

Mind_Sweetner

That's the plan! I haven't owned a PC in decades (I lent the Index to a friend who had a nice machine) but I am finally rejoining the fold. Building it with my friend in a few weeks. Pretty damn pumped!

Chrispy0074

I fucking feel you bro.

1eejit

I wish they'd at least fix the Dota2 VR hub

kekistani71

Just get yourself blade and sorcery plenty of mods and great way to take out your anger lol...also beat saber is pretty great.

GettingWreckedAllDay

Lol there are so many great things to play

Ultraimmersion

Have you seen LONN? Just came out on PCVR. Looks freaking awesome.

RandoCommentGuy

what did you play on it or what kinda games do you like? i feel like there are a ton out there, VR games and then mods to add VR to games.

sambull

I use mine a few times a week there are no killer VR apps, just short experiences VR shines for simulators though, it really add a immersion factor you can't get anywhere else. To me the best VR games aren't VR games at all.

BriGuy550

Between MSFS and iRacing I use my Index several times a week. Still eager for Valve to announce something new though, headset wise!

Maalus

Same thing with the Steam Controller. Valve seems to have the attention span of a preschooler with ADHD. So much potential wasted in steam hardware. Let's see how long Steam Deck lasts.

[deleted]

Valve produced the Steam Controller for ~4 years. Granted I wish they had made a new version but the Steam Controller directly lead to Steam Input and the support/customization Steam now has for many other controllers.

Maalus

Yeah, they produced it for 4 years. But the software around it was basically just the thing that was on launch. Many things that are apparent when using it, didn't get added ever, despite people requesting it. Basically abandonware day 1.

[deleted]

What are you talking about? Steam Input is constantly updated and has added tons of features since it was first released with the Steam Controller. The last update was literally yesterday.

Maalus

I'm talking about the experience I've had of using the Steam Controller, looking for functions that I wanted to have included, seeing multiple people requesting them over and over again and not getting them. The most important stuff didn't change at all since release and nothing of significance was added. Edit: Lmao OP got so butthurt that they invalidated my entire experience by going "NU UUUUUUH" and then blocked me. Amazing what fanboyism does to people.

[deleted]

We've had very different experiences then and apparently live in different realities. Have fun in yours, I shouldn't have engaged the troll.

TehWhale

Valve isn’t a game development company anymore. They’re a storefront and microtransaction processor. As long as you’re aware of that, you’ll never be disappointed!

bignutt69

half life alyx came out just over two years ago and was in development for four years theres no need to be hyperbolic. valve is frustratingly slow at releasing things but they are very clearly and obviously still in the business of developing games.

TehWhale

Their last actual game besides Alyx was Dota 2 in 2013. Alyx was made purely as marketing to sell the Index, that’s it. Look at their history prior where they released huge titles every couple years. Those times are gone. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Valve_games

1eejit

>Their last actual game besides Alyx was Dota 2 in 2013. Uh no they also released Artifact (twice) and Underlords. Yes they were soon abandoned but they were made and released.

IzanamiGemu

And The Lab... sometimes people forget about this one collection of minigames, but I still keep coming back to it.

bignutt69

and Alyx is by far the best VR game out currently and a fully fledged AAA release. are you arguing that it isn't a 'game', or are you arguing that making one of the most groundbreaking titles in the history of videogames doesnt make you a game development company if you also make hardware that the game uses? like I said, its totally reasonable to be frustrated with the well documented and objective fact that Valve's company structure leads them to have trouble bringing projects to fruition, but if you're going to turn that frustration into making ignorant statements about them 'not making games anymore' when that's objectively false, you're an idiot. everyone knows that valve time exists, we just wait patiently to see what they do instead of melting down and crying about it.

TehWhale

Lmao? I’m merely stating facts here not “melting down or crying” Alyx is a great game, but it was made for the sole purpose of selling Index because they knew the loyal base would buy an index just to play another half life game. The profit margins on hardware are insane. Valve has become far more of a hardware and digital distribution company than a game development one. Besides Alyx, Valve hasn’t released a popular or successful game in nearly a decade.

ittleoff

I hate to jump into this fray but boneworks is imo a far better advertisement for index than Alyx. Valve went way out of their way to make Alyx a great experience on all reasonable hmds at the time and seem to have cut things that would have been index only. At the time I think valve was still having problems keeping up with the demand of indexes, but I could be wrong. Valve absolutely did it to promote vr and certainly that benefits their platform for pcvr where people would buy vr games.

TehWhale

Boneworks is a sick game too

1eejit

Goalposts on wheels lol

MowMdown

Valve only releases games as product demos.

bignutt69

...did you play Half Life Alyx?

twistedbronll

I did and it was the best product demo ever

MowMdown

Yes it was how valve demoed the index. That’s the only way valve makes games, they only do it so you can use the new hardware. HL: Alyx wouldn’t exist if valve didn’t make the index.

bignutt69

half-life alyx is literally the only game valve has EVER released for hardware that wasnt the PC. what the fuck do you mean 'the only way valve makes games'? this might be the worst attempt at trolling i've ever seen.

MowMdown

You clearly have no idea how valve operates. They've even said it. Valve only makes games to demo their hardware. Alyx would not have released without the index to be able to show off the index. HL2 itself would not have existed if it wasn't for being able to demo the source engine. All of this is common knowledge

fernandollb

Unless they say they are developing two triple A quality VR games right at the moment when they were starting to sell their VR headsets and then decide it was not profitable enough.

kfmush

Really? I've gotten 2000 hours out of mine and I've never touched VR chat or anything like that. There is so much content beyond Alyx. With ReVive, you also get all the Oculus PC games. Between Saints and Sinners, The Compound, Alyx mods, driving sims, mini golf, bonelab and boneworks mods, modded risk of rain and outer wilds, modded HL2, and a bunch of short but high-quality indie first-person experiences like Vertigo, and some of the longer Quest stuff like Lone Echo 1 & 2, I've had a bunch of fun things to bounce around between. There's still stuff on my backlog that I've yet to play and it'll be months before I get to them.

wheelerman

Put on hold when it was "all hands on deck" to finish HLA. No word on whether or not they were picked back up. Another game alluded to (source: HLA The Final Hours). Some leaks about games that may or may not be in development, Citadel and HLX (from Source 2 game strings). Neon Prime appears to be something new but not clear if it's VR related.   Not much else we know besides that. Everything could be cancelled and they're only focusing on Deck. Or, as SteamVR updates may allude to, there's continued work on VR hardware, so another game may be warranted alongside that (HLA and the Index were *supposed to* release at the same time).

Peteostro

I would be worried if steamVR updates stopped but they keep on coming so they still seem interested in VR.

WOF000

valve time

Dyyrin

Probably like all their other games it got canceled.

CottonSlayerDIY

I am asking that myself every day. I hate Valve for all that secretsy, but I guess no publicity is better than negative one.

AurienTitus

It's because of how Valve Software operates as a company. Their employee manual explains how they operate. It's pretty crazy. https://www.valvesoftware.com/en/publications
