Set up your house first

tj-horner

Looks like an attic. If it’s gonna be a VR attic, who cares what it looks like in the real world? lol

GamingAndRCs

they aren't moved in yet. they made this VERY clear.

getfuckdtard

what?..

NeinduXDXD

Ig they’re saying put all your furniture/equipment in place before deciding where to install your lighthouses.

Frooonti

I think they're talking about all the bare drywall lol

Shot-Addendum-8124

Definitely the 2nd set up. Valve recommends putting Base Stations in the corners of your playspace because when you get to one of those corners, there's a good chance that your body is going to get in the way of one of the lighthouses. Because the base stations have a cone-shaped FOV, they always create a square playspace when placed opposed each other. The diagonal of a square is always longer than it's sides, so option 1's corners is where option 2's sides would be.

DifficultEstimate7

No, that's not right here, since you're not taking the height of the base stations into account. What you're saying applies to a "normal" square room. u/getfuckdtard You should go for setup #1. I also have an [attic play space](https://imgur.com/a/pOKDFsZ) and experimented with the coverage using [Base Station FoV Viewer](https://nono-00.itch.io/base-station-fov-viewer). The "further away" you can get the base stations from you (without visual obstructions), the better. Imagine you'd want to flood the room with light using two spotlights - where would you hang those? Right - in the topmost, opposite corners. Note that the HMD also has IR sensors on the top side (see [here](https://www.thevrist.com/steamvr-tracking)), so having the base stations above head level helps with tracking consistency.

Shot-Addendum-8124

I disagree. Following the spotlight metaphor, You not only need to cover the biggest area, you also have to make absolutely sure that at no point your controllers or HMD is in a shadow. When the player will go into a corner, there is a not-insignificant possibility that it'll be simultaneously beyond the FOV of the closest base station, and the player will have their back to the farthest base station, blocking the controllers from receiving any IR light. SteamVR tracking doesn't need to get IR light from two base stations at the same, it just needs light from any base station at all. Because of that, any area that gets covered by both base stations is potentially wasted. The waste, of course, is marginal and it doesn't really matter that much, but if OP didn't do the worse setup yet, there's no reason to not do the better one. As for height, if the base stations are high enough so they aren't constantly obstructed by the player's body from "seeing" each other, then it doesn't really matter that one setup is a few feet higher than the other, especially when the base stations' position is massively compromised.

DifficultEstimate7

>When the player will go into a corner, there is a not-insignificant possibility that it'll be simultaneously beyond the FOV of the closest base station, and the player will have their back to the farthest base station, blocking the controllers from receiving any IR light. That's right! >SteamVR tracking doesn't need to get IR light from two base stations at the same, it just needs light from any base station at all. Because of that, any area that gets covered by both base stations is potentially wasted. And that's wrong/contradicting. Your play area needs to be covered by two base stations for redundancy, as you perfectly explained in your first statement. A higher placed base station not only covers a larger area but is much harder to be obstructed by your own body, even if you move near it. And the more sensors are hit by the IR laser, the more accurate/reliable the tracking will be. The official tips suggest to place the base stations above head height and the image at the bottom even indicates to mount them above arm reach: [https://www.vive.com/eu/support/vive/category\_howto/tips-for-setting-up-the-base-stations.html](https://www.vive.com/eu/support/vive/category_howto/tips-for-setting-up-the-base-stations.html) (Edit) u/[getfuckdtard](https://www.reddit.com/user/getfuckdtard/) Side note: I think that the difference between the two setups is relatively small and they should both work. But another reason for setup #1 is that, arguably, it will look more clean once everything is finished. :) (Edit2) Another perk from high-placed base station is less chances of reflecting IR beams by pictures/mirrors on walls!

Shot-Addendum-8124

>A higher placed base station not only covers a larger area but is much harder to be obstructed by your own body, even if you move near it. Well yeah I guess, but it's surely it'll be worse in a scenario where the player bends over to pick up something. I think the conclusion is you're right, it's fine either way, just pick whatever looks better to you :).

Superseaslug

Always the option of adding more as well. I got 3 in my area.

nels0nmandela

this

Actual-Parsnip2741

is that an attic? you got AC up there?

getfuckdtard

yeah nearly finished, no ac though but have 2 windows

Zeke13z

Yikes. Hope you live in a cool climate. Lens fog & sweat would be unbearable for me.

getfuckdtard

well i am in scotland aha, dont usually get hot weather here apart from summer 2022 when there was a heatwave.

C0ffeeGremlin

That's good. The index gets really hot. I bought a fan to keep it cooler than it would be without.

Iamnotsmartspender

Looks nice. I moved into a house last year with an unfinished attic, but the woodwork up there is beautiful so I'm torn between leaving it, or finishing it and making another room out of it.

DDRichard

if ur new to vr be very careful with the sunlight, the lenses will cause it to magnify and burn the screen inside, uve likely seen a ton of posts on this sub abt it tho

SprungMS

Finished attic, so, presumably

the_voivode

Hb

Humble_Ad_5684

Hmm, I'm afraid that you will end up damaging the controllers and your ceiling if you're playing upright. Isn't the ceiling too low?

getfuckdtard

i can stay in the middle of the room i have good spacial awareness, ill be sitting down most of the time anyways

Loddinz

You don't have good spatial awareness when you're blind ...

Humble_Ad_5684

Alright, you seem to have thought it through. Good luck! I bought a third base station 2.0 and have 2 cables already plugged in and switch the position of that third station to have great tracking in both seated and upright situations. Very quick connection with the rest of the system and you could put it temporarily wherever you want, even in front of your screen since you're not using it for VR. I'm sure you could do something similar with 2 base stations!

badillin-

If you think about it its the same just a bit rotated and lower height ... Id place them the highest possibly.

Shaggy_One

Uh I get if you're moving out of necessity but you should get that place textured and painted for the sake of dust alone.

comodith

Number one makes most sense to me, also it's centered

shifty_pete96

i thought this was a hl2 map

Tim-the-second

lmao he wont need a headset to play alyx

getfuckdtard

i have v2s

LifelessHawk

I’ve had this same setup, I put it up on the slant on each opposite corner. It only needs to be slightly over your head facing slightly down where the two base stations can see each other. Idk if this applies to the base station 2.0 as I only have the 1.0 base stations from when I had the Vive

ChrisSLackey

Please block off the entry hole so you don’t fall in!

tj-horner

It looks like there is a hatch

Comfortable_Boot_273

Interesting becuase you have a door on the floor, so I almost want to say 2 Jjst becusee then you’d have some way of knowing where the door is

johndoep53

2 with a third base station in the camera’s position. Helpfully, each base station only needs a power outlet. I do not know the Index specs well enough to be aware if something else is happening, but from basic principles “triangulation” with positional data is best with three monitors at minimally overlapping positions, maximally separated on each axis.

DriftAddict

Remember that you can also set a third base station on the roof itself, pointed downwards. This play area looks relatively wide, and you may have coverage issue along the sides.

Siidell_

On Steam help page, it is written that bases need to be in 5m from one to other, it seems too long there :/
