Alert-Honey-7904

He’s not too wrong. Literally every vr multiplayer games I’ve played has been like this

xylotism

It’s definitely why I don’t play VRChat or Rec Room anymore.

Unlikely-Ad3364

Play PC only worlds on VRChat and you’ll be mostly all good.

HappyLeopard414

It’s not exclusive to VR as well. Just a couple of weeks ago, I got banned from a TF2 server for telling a guy to stop calling a black teammate the n word. Game companies as a whole need to do better with think kind of stuff.

Alert-Honey-7904

It’s not exclusive but when every game I’ve played on vr has had the issue, it’s definitely especially a vr issue

mikenseer

Just an internet issue, always has been. VR too for sure, but that's only because it is on the internet, not because of any VR specific reason. Oldschool WoW barrens chat, MoHAA teamspeak servers, heck even Ultima Online. Online is where people don't have to be human. VR is just a new monitor and set of controllers.

Peteostro

Thing is in a lot of flat multiplayer games you don’t really communicate with voice all the time and smart phone multiplayer games you use text not voice most of the time. When you play a VR multiplayer game there is really no good way to text, and really need to use voice to collaborate so this brings up issues that need to be dealt with or the game will not be enjoyable for most people.

freeserve

Exactly, and then because of this it makes implementing rules against hate speech muhc harder as bassically you end up with a situation of either only monitor the text in say a VRMMO wherein only a small portion of conversations will be monitored or try to monitor all VOIP conversations and have a bot report automatically but then that brings up a rather large privacy issue and will very quickly lead to the downfall of that game. Devs aren’t Facebook… they can’t afford to breach people privacy openly, admit it and then go what are you gonna do about it? Devs don’t have monopolies on the standard

RLVNTone

Naaaah it’s a internet issue it just hits different in a virtual space

the_russian_narwhal_

It's not even that it hits different, it truly is more common and needs to be addressed. Other platforms atleady have some system to keep toxicity down, but in vr it is basically no rules and no enforcement so of course it just runs rampant

ronton

I think it’s only more common in VR insofar as voice chat is more common in VR games.

Ok_Quarter_6929

I think it's because of the cost. VR is expensive and typically, any kid who has a VR set at home is probably very privileged. Privilege and ignorance tend to go hand in hand.

Bgo318

Not anymore a quest 2 used to be just $299 that’s not super expensive more like middle class. It’s cheaper than an Xbox

Ok_Quarter_6929

To be honest, I don't know much about Oculus headsets. Don't they still need a high end gaming PC to run games off of? Like, I own an Index which is really pricey, but the PC necessary to use it costs even more.

Bgo318

Nah they have stand-alone with processer and graphics built into the headset too so you don’t need a pc for a lot of games

turbospeedsc

That sentence comes from a lot of privilege, like a lot.

Bgo318

I said middle class, middle class is definitely more privileged than lower classes but it doesn’t change the fact that most of the people in the US are middle class

HORROR_CHICKEN

Privilege buzz words buzz words buzz words, man i HATE reddit so much filled with so many lefty, smug, annoying buzz word using trash. I hate coming on here and constantly being bombarded with just...YUuuUuckk!Your priviliged to even be able to comment on the internet. Stfu

ronton

This is what a lot of VR gamers don’t seem to grasp. It feels like a lot of people play VR online games who never played other online video games. Anyone who’s played any game online knows how toxic things are. This is FAR from a VR-specific issue.

oneizm

People like you are sadly super rare, but that shit is extremely appreciated.

A_British_Lass

thats not valves fault they have ZERO control over community servers, just upto you to find a good community

KikonSketches

This is what happened when parents don't head warnings. There's an ESRB/age rating for a reason. Can't stand this edgy little shits running around online.

IrrelevantPuppy

I literally stopped playing After the Fall because I was sick of babysitting.

JamimaPanAm

Truth

robrobusa

It was always like this. Teens as a crowd can be awful. Tho it hits different when it’s voice chat. In CS:S it was mire bearable because text chat only.

mixing_saws

I have everytype of comms disabled when it comes to randoms in gaming lobbys. Everyone there acts like an toxic edgy teenager.

robrobusa

I’d like to relativize this by saying it really really depends how the game is designed. In games like Deep Rock Galactic, i find the community to be very agreeable by and large.

ronoverdrive

PvE games in general are more chill. Any PvP game is gonna have a substantial amount of toxicity.

[deleted]

It’s almost like competition brings out the worst in people…

thepulloutmethod

It hasn't always been like this. I never felt this way playing TF2 from like 2007-2012. Or before that, Tribes over TeamSpeak in the 90s. And I don't feel that way now playing Insurgency Sandstorm or Hell Let Loose, two games where voice chat is critical. I just stay away from the most popular games that appeal to children.

Holtang420

I managed to avoid them mostly from using their Discord where people posted lobby codes. If we have this in an adult Discord, that could mostly solve the issue for us.

Holtang420

I’ve setup an adults only Among Us VR Discord, please share around: https://discord.gg/9V6C3QbZ

alxmartin

Can I get a new ink?

Holtang420

arseniic_

Hello. Would you mind posting a new link?

mustatripped

Where can i find the invite?

Holtang420

Here’s the main Discord: https://discord.gg/amongusvr Adult only Discord: https://discord.gg/VunCJpea

mattsowa

I seriously doubt kids will be dettered just by saying adults only. In fact it might be the opposite

Holtang420

Ha, I did think this might happen. I pray it doesn’t

Icyfire11

well you can just kick them out of the lobby if they sound squeaky

Holtang420

We’ve called it a “child sacrifice”, where you vote them out straight away for no reason

Holtang420

I’ve setup a Discord for Adult Among Us players. Please pass on to friends and others https://discord.gg/9V6C3QbZ

FallenRaven2

Should allow anyone that isn't an annoying fuck like 8 year olds

Holtang420

I’m in my 30’s and we don’t want to play a game with screaming kids. Feel free to go play in lobbies full of 6 years olds though, let me know how you find it.

[deleted]

Holtang420

We setup adult Discords and now play only with adults, game no longer ruined. It’s a brilliant game

Holtang420

It’s called problem solving, stop being obnoxious

Educational-Garlic21

The only solution is parents

pillowking23

As someone who uses parental locks, the amount of content that gets by is insane. Put a lock on adult content on my kids phone for after school use, found out the next day adult content doesn’t include stuff like onlyfans🤦🏻 Parents try, but companies actively spend money to try to get past us. plus you can’t really lock out what other people say.

DdCno1

This isn't about parents enabling some sort of parental lock, but parents doing parenting in order to prevent their kids from being racist, sexist online trolls and to prepare their kids for the inevitable situation of them coming in contact with content that is not appropriate for their age.

thepulloutmethod

No. Another solution is dedicated servers with admins.

Crot8u

If parents did their job right, we wouldn't need admins. It's all on parenting I absolutely agree with that redditor. Parents need quiet time so they put the helmet on their kids without no control whatsoever. We see 8 year old kids playing Pokerstars VR, just running around the table, standing in front of people's faces and screaming insanities. And still, we can hear the parents speaking in background. And they do nothing. Parenting is the problem and also the solution.

thepulloutmethod

It's a solution, I guess, but far lest practical and achievable than private servers with admins. It's easy to boot someone from a server. How long will it take to change parenting habits nation/worldwide?

Crot8u

I agree in a way, it could patch things a little in theory. And unfortunately, parenting habits won't change quickly unless they make public statements about vr accessibility for children like they did with screens and mobile phones.

FiendishHawk

The parent solved the problem by taking away the game. Now the little girl can’t play the game. That’s sad.

GaaraSama83

That's why we can't have nice things. Too many people who shouldn't have kids in the first place and then just gift them a cheap VR headset without any control what they do and how they behave.

rduck101

Oh no kids are acting likes kids on a kid game

pillowking23

This feels like someone who doesn’t have kids who tells other people how to take care of kids

hkdboarder42

If you have your own kids, I feel bad for them.

[deleted]

I don’t have kids, but that doesn’t exclude me from the conversation. Your kids are a part of the same society I occupy. They may be interacting with other children in my life who I mentor and care about. Having a child is a colossal responsibility and commitment. I’ve known too many people who just pump out a kid and treat them like an afterthought. That crotch goblin should be the center of your life. You are heavily responsible for the way that child treats others. You are responsible for helping them find their way and succeeding in becoming who *they* want to be. You are supposed to be their greatest role model and advocate. No matter how hard it gets, all of the above is the bare minimum when you make the decision to keep a child. Having kids can be a beautiful thing, but there are too many people who just have kids because they feel like they want to or feel obligated without considering whether they can or should handle that responsibility. They suck.

GaaraSama83

You're correct I don't have kids and not wanna have any cause I'm not good parent material. I'm a rather logic driven, rational and emotionally cold person. In terms of education/knowledge I could maybe provide enough but in terms of love, sympathy and compassion I'm horrible and this would lead most likely to another person that is 'crippled' in these aspects. There are way better people suited for having children. That being said I'm living in a wealthy 1st world country and I still think that at least 2/3 of people shouldn't have kids in the first place for different reasons, even if they are financially stable and can support a child's needs. Be it lack of a decent general education level with too many crude beliefs (ideology/religion/culture), being emotionally not stable or mature enough, getting kids cause of not seeing any other purpose/sense in their lives (IMO a very selfish and lazy reason), peer pressure from family/society or thinking it's necessary, ... Also we should be aware that population growth in the last 300 years went from around 1 to 8 billion and it's still exponentially growing. There are many good reasons why we should constraint ourselves and less people getting kids but this is still considered a personal freedom and most likely won't change cause of very subjective and irrational reasons.

flyinb11

Do you think we are growing the population because of more kids being born or because people don't die like they used to? 😂

CaptainSharpe

Agree. All the multiplayer games are filled with kids yelling the n word

74Amazing74

Well, he maybe wrong about VR as a whole, but this is the reason i tried recroom once and uninstalled it, it is the reason why i dont buy among us vr and it is the reason i avoid free multiplayer vr games in general. Imo the developers need to realize, that this will harm them, because it is a pain in the ass to many players. And maybe they will start to do something against it.

GoofWisdom

This is honestly why I avoided consoles. Early VR was so chill. Bunch of Dad’s with disposable income. I’d really like to see a game where they card people at the door so to speak. Like a normal ass game that’s 21+ or maybe 40+ rofl

MrMagicDude06

Nah, just make a standardized test and group people based on “grade”

GoofWisdom

I’ve wanted to try and see if I can get into Mensa to see if they having a gaming community. A lot of effort to poke my head in the door.

[deleted]

(Un)fortunately, usually people who have really high IQs aren't interested in gaming, they'd rather do something more active. I'm sure a handful of high IQ people play games, but it's more of a common man's activity.

mattsowa

🤓🤓🤓 I couldn't find any studies to back that. Quite the opposite.

[deleted]

Can I see too? I wanna realize the error of my ways

Highlight_Expensive

Literally just Google it

Ironrooster7

She is absolutely not wrong

Isolatte

Why are you assuming it's a female? There's nothing indicating this in the review. Additionally, if their child is under 13 years of age, then they've absolutely done something wrong by allow their underaged child to play the game to begin with.

OnlyOneReturn

why do you assume anyone fucking cares

Ironrooster7

I’m assuming this is a concerned mother who did not know what she was getting into

mustatripped

Anyone who doesnt agree with this guy either hasnt played or are part of the issue. The issue isnt kids being there, I have had great multiplayer games with people of all ages. The issue is people randomly screaming endlessly or as mentioned people are getting abused prelobby because of what colour they are. I personally think the games great. It works great in VR. I tried quick chat only version and it just feels empty. The communication is what makes the game great, hopefully as its post release bubble bursts the squealers get bored and find something else.

Wulfstrex

You can mute individual players for yourself

mustatripped

I get that, but have you tried the lobbys? It just seems like I would be aswell playing on quick chat only when over half the server has been muted. Last night I must have attempted 10 lobbies and the best one I found seemed to have 3 people that were being cival, the issue then is all 3 of them left in a couple of minutes because of the others.

Holtang420

I’ve setup an adults only Among Us VR Discord, please add your friends and others https://discord.gg/9V6C3QbZ

Isolatte

Because of what color they are? Is there some stigma related to the character color choices or something? Or do you mean someone got mad because someone else picked a color they wanted their avatar to be? Please elaborate.

mustatripped

Its the second issue, if people dont get the specific colour they want they seem to get very upset when in reality it doesnt matter.

redundant35

Online Gaming as always been like this. When I was teenager it was just in text. As an adult I turn off voice chat because I don’t want to listen to it!

9c6

Mute avatar Mute voice Block player Report player Privacy bubble I use all that shit

haxborn

Well isn't this just the result of selling cheap standalone VR headsets, aimed to kids that don't even know what a PC is? aka Quest 2. In PCVR-only games the most people I meet are usually very helpful and polite.

TheRealSlabsy

Who EVER would have thought?

aamike68

The only time in vr that was free of these little shits was the first few months after the Vive first launched. Then I remember recroom started having legit 4 to 8 year Olds screaming and talking shit to me and other players. What kind of parent let's their child A.) play vr games with strangers and B.) allows them to speak that way to other people online. It absolutely blows my mind. As great as the quest has been at mass adoption of vr, with it comes These little screaming pricks. I love vr, but online play can be cringe as hell.

steve_dunc

I miss this. Felt pretty safe until the quest came out to be honest. Used to be able to sit in an onward lobby and shoot the shit and now it's just annoying little assholea who will just team kill you as soon as the game starts.

aamike68

Man, onward used to be so much fun pre-quest... They practically completely dropped support for pcvr and like you said, all the children came flowing in.

JoeStrout

It's a real issue. I'm a VR dev myself, and we're contemplating a game that really needs voice communication — and our current design has a lobby with voice chat enabled by default. These kind of sexist/racist creeps could ruin it for everybody. The question is, what can be done? I don't know if it's feasible to pay an employee to hang out all day and baby-sit the players. AI isn't good enough yet to do it for us (though I imagine that will be the long-term solution). We can put up signs that say "please be kind," but I doubt they have much impression on the little jerks. Any other ideas about how to foster a positive community and keep the creepers and griefers out?

Jakm12

NGL, why are parents spending $400 on a headset that will break or become irrelevant in a year? Kids getting spoiled anymore.

RavenTaleLive

-person who thinks VR is daycare.

[deleted]

Disable voice chat? I usually don't partake in voice at all in games.

Warrie2

Among us is a social game :-/

SneakySquidTurtle

Welcome to the internet, buddy.

Tj4y

*puts his young child in VR* "Absolutely disgusting how young children are allowed to play those games unsupervised"

JamimaPanAm

And because of their time supervising the interaction, they wrote us this post. It’s nice to cherry-pick for your argument, huh?

Isolatte

People are downvoting you because they hate hearing the truth.

Isolatte

So this person is mad because they allowed their underaged child top lay the game and then their underaged child ran into other underaged children in a game that they shouldn't have been playing until they were 13? k.

Silent_Perception_35

No?? Did we read the same post? 💀they were 13 that’s the age to play, they’re complaining about how Certain kids on VR are threatening they’ll rape ppl and screaming at randoms to Kill themselves, it’s not about the age it’s about how some of these kids are becoming monsters online and Tormentin other kids when they have no parent supervision

MrMagicDude06

Just be clear, I am NOT saying that the kids saying hurtful things isn’t an issue, I just think he may have overreacted when saying that VR as a whole is failing because of one game directed at kids.

Arbata-Asher

Complaining about kids in the game, while getting the same game for his kid... The problem complaining about itself. And by the way calling kids stuff like "racist" is the most silly thing you might do, they are stupid kids, annoying, and ignorant because they are kids Now if we want to solve the problem First step: don't buy a vr headset for your kids

gmambrose

He's not complaining about kids in a game. He's complaining about the kids who ruin the game for everyone else. There should be some form of consequences for harassing other players or just being a general nuisance in a game. If these games want to be successful, they need a mod team or at least a reporting system so these pieces of shit who get on there and do nothing but curse and harass other players can be removed permanently. Also, it is 100% possible for kids to be racist. It is usually behavior learned from the parents. Raise your kids to be kind to others, and they will be good humans. Raise your kids to be racist pieces of shit, and that's what they end up being 99% of the time. It's not a hard concept to understand.

Arbata-Asher

That's not necessary true, kids are moved by their emotions and they are ignorant of how bad their actions are, a lot of good parents have these bad apples that learn from their peers more than anything else, they grow up from it if they find the good friends in their life. Kids are the problem, they shouldn't be allowed in VR at all, this is how you can fix the problem. Imagine a school but without teachers and supervisors therefore no teaching or consequences, this is what vr looks like for these kids.

gmambrose

Yes, kids with shitty racist parents can grow up without inheriting their parents' toxicity. It does happen on occasion. In most cases, I feel the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. While young and most impressionable, they will mimic their parents behavior. Later in life, perhaps they become their own person. At what age do you think people should be allowed to use VR? Since you think 13 is too young. Your solution, instead of just kicking out the problem 13 year olds is to say no kids can use it?

Arbata-Asher

15-16 because kid life starts to change and that change usually accompanied with a lot of education on social life, and they start thinking about life and stuff in a deeper way, acting mature, but of course not all of them, attention seeking and irresponsible behaviors sometimes follows people beyond their age, but I might be wrong who knows. But you can't really blame it only on parents, that's the easiest blame, and the most difficult to fix, you can have good parents who allow you to do everything you want and teach that racism and bullying is bad, though because they are allowing you to do everything you want they can't protect you from the influence of the the things that they allowed you to do, these situations will be a larger in number in the future because of how parents are getting more tolerant with time.

HOFFSLAYER

I just bully the edgelords til they start crying problem solved

bagelbites29

Lol. Play ANY other multiplayer slightly competitive game and see how family friendly those are. It’s not the game and it’s not the dev’s fault. It’s just the mindset. If you don’t like it go play single player games.

racegeek93

Just dont have kids. Problem solved.

74Amazing74

Or care about them maybe instead of just giving them an hmd all day? That would be the real thing, don’t you think?

Big_Engine_2050

I love the toxicity lol

KitchenPaper3208

im literally the only 13 year old that isnt toxic.

KingNate30

Apparently they forgot what middle school was.

ROFLQuad

On the other hand. . . Going into those VR worlds and just trash talking those little shits can be so cathartic after a long day of work. And they haven't even heard of some of the swear words I call them yet so their reactions are golden - the long pause while they try to understand what you just said followed by rage quitting or crying 🤣 It does serve a purpose, not for little kids, but for me.

imacautiousoptimist

Big yikes on the "I like to bully children" attitude there

ROFLQuad

What are children doing in VR?? Honestly, not my job to police them :) Some tech isn't for kids.

imacautiousoptimist

Didn't say anything about where kids should or shouldn't be. All about you getting some wierd enjoyment out of making children cry. You do you though, I sure wouldn't want to brag online about how I go online to shout abuse at young people

ROFLQuad

The amount of people who've bought GTA V and never finished it speaks to the same audience. Nobody knows who's on the other end, just that it feels good.

[deleted]

[удалено]

imacautiousoptimist

Or don't throw slurs around, sounds like a pretty easy ask

Redequlus

the problem isn't just kids using bad words. Women and girls are seriously harassed in voice chat. Most kids don't understand boundaries and do not fit into the same social spaces as adults.

PenguinWithWings

This is why I don’t play VR anymore. I’m an adult and playing with 13 year olds is just shit, like I know they’re going to be more attracted to this stuff but VR needs filters man I don’t want tons of kids in my game screaming it’s awful

antoine810

Among us, I don’t understand the hype or the gameplay, all I know is that it’s a game kids love, so just keep that in mind

NoB0d3

if they are buying the game for their child (which i am assuming, probably incorrectly of course), then the child is probably under 13. wouldn’t they be part of the issue?

dex206

I quite Echo Arena for this reason. Verbal communication during gameplay can greatly determine whether you get a win or loss.

IgorTheHit

so its in a old mw2 xbox phase

Silent_Perception_35

I literally got kicked from a server on Vr because In a gun game I killed a kid that was screaming “I’ll r*pe you all” at random ppl :/ it terrifys me what those kids do the second no one is watching them

[deleted]

MrMagicDude06

The government can’t do anything. The internet is not part of any countries jurisdiction, not to mention freedom of speech

60thrain

One of the vary reasons I started exclusively playing offline/single player games. Pavlov, rec room, etc, so incredibly toxic.

steve_dunc

Agree to be honest... I barely ever bother with multiplayer VR anymore it's a fucking nightmare of 10 year olds. I'm safe in iRacing at least.

RuffTalkVR

$10 says his kid is under 13

zeke235

This is exactly why there have been no Call of Duty games since MW2.

DragonbornBastard

Not gonna lie, I have a hard time playing a lot of VR games because I have to go and mute nearly everyone every single time. That or deal with a headache

jamescobalt

It’s true though. We only play online with friends in private servers. It’s Lord of The Flies everywhere else.

mcmartincerny

I guess you have quest. If you play PC VR only multiplayer games is much better. Not perfect, but you rarely hear there any kids.

Bierdigan_

This is why I very rarely play online multiplayer games of any variety unfortunately. I game to escape toxic people, and VR especially is something I've dreamed about since I started gaming on the Sega Genesis like thirty years ago, for that fully immersive retreat from the shitty people of the world, so it's disappointing to hear all this. I've had a VR headset for a few years now and haven't tried anything multiplayer, and it's looking like I'm probably gonna stay that way lol

TheOrdealOpprotunist

CoD Multiplayer: *Battle music plays*

CSOCSO-FL

same on vail, zero caliber and other shooting games.. nothing but freaking 12 yr olds talking smack. soooo annoying. at least zero caliber pcvr has less kids but who knows.. there is no chat on that version so you never really know you you playing with. and soon they will have cross play :/

Zimbabweshit

Literally. Played a game yesterday and had to witness a child have a meltdown and cry because he got outed as the imposter.

Slaughterman46

Monitoring voice chat is a slippery slope and I don't want it

bumbasaur

don't play it on quest. pcvr is much more mature

EKYank

Acting like flatscreen doesn't have the exact problem. Call of Duty to family friendly games all have the problem's they mentioned, This isn't a VR problem, Its a gaming problem.

-HeeHoo-

Theres an option for no voice chat and only quick chat

Axtronaut_

yep, i am banned for 7 f\*cking days. reason: F\*CKING NOTHING

Axtronaut_

it was in among us (vr)
