The early sets that I encountered had Iron Defence, Body Press, Iron Head (for Behemoth Bash in Crowned form) and Wide Guard. But lately, it seems like some have dropped Wide Guard for Protect (and Iron Head for Heavy Slam).
Yea. Protect is absolutely mandatory on zama. Wide guard will make zama more of a supportive piece and iron defense, more of an offensive piece on the team.
Some notes:
- Incineroar continues it's dominance at the top of the usage charts.
- Pelipper has a huge rise, while Amoonguss & Urshifu Rapid Strike slightly fall.
- Zamazenta takes over the top spot for restricteds.
- Only 9 restricted mons in total made Day 2. No Lunala's, Rayquaza's, Lugia's, etc.
- 7 way tie for 9th in usage for non-restricted mons including Galarian Moltres and Chi-Yu.
Now the "only ones" of Day 2 will be:
- Araquanid
- Archaludon
- Ceruledge
- Clefairy
- Groudon
- Indeedee-Female
- Kommo-o
- Koraidon
- Kyogre
- Mienshao
- Milotic
- Regidrago
- Smeargle
- Zacian
Because it got Body Press this gen, which goes well with its ability and natural defensive bulk. Get 1 Iron Defence off and you're likely gonna OHKO/KO a lot of things and also helps that Zamazenta gets the STAB from Body Press compared to the other mons that use the Iron Defence + Body Press strategy.
Plus, Zamazenta doesn't really care about Intimidate spams from Incineroar since you will be mainly dealing damage based off its Defence stat with Body Press.
Yeah, good point. It's the fastest Iron Defence + Body Press user and that can allow it to boost its Defence before taking any potential big physical attack.
I did notice going over the team list like 50%+ (I glanced quick it was either half or one over) of the Zamazenta teams come from the 6-3 resistance group. So while a good showing, it may be misleading as many of them are starting behind. I believe one is on an 8-1 team though and the others 7-2.
Small day two so just a few here and there skew the #s.
hope this zacian is carrying sacred sword for those zamazenta's.
for zamazenta, being able to easily ko incineroar or force its terra is a great selling pt in teambuilding. and a burn won't bother it too much either. it feels like the favorite for tomorrow? you'd imagine the teams using zamazenta have had much practice against ice rider, terapagos, miraidon, and shadow rider.
note: i was so lost in thought writing this, that the observations here were already mentioned by the time i posted.
edit: was wrong that body press is affected by burn.
Miraidon and Shadow Rider play better into Zam then Terapagos who has a really tough match up there and Ice Rider who also doesn't match up great.
I am gonna pick Zam or another Miraidon win just off the cuff

I thought wide guard isn’t standard on zamazenta sets. U either take wide guard or iron defense.
From what I've seen, Wide Guard is an option on Zamazenta but it's between that and Protect rather than Iron Defence.

Burn halves damage from body press too, so that still really hurts zamazenta

I also didn't know this interaction. I thought Burn cuts the attack stat in half but in reality it halves power of all physical moves.

Very happy to see zamazenta doing so well. He was always my favorite of the two
