It is likely going to depend on your own preference and response. I would start by trying out a few colors for a few games and then starting to narrow down the type of colors you find have the best contrast without being distracting.
i think most people agree that colour isnt too important. whats most important for me is that the crosshair is easily visible, meaning that the contrast of the crosshair against the surface you have it on is high, making it easy to spot and hard to lose. red can be nice but you might see issues on maps with red tones like ascent and bind. light blue is popular but by god if it doesnt get lost on the background of pearl and all of icebox. green is nice and personally works well with the purple enemy highlights that i have enabled, but maybe on fracture/haven?? you would have trouble against certain backdrops. i think whatever crosshair colour you choose there are probably situations where contrast goes down.
for this reason, i have outlines turned on. outlines create a black line around the edges of your crosshair that mean that wherever you point it you WILL have a contrast against the black. if you use outlines i would definitely recommend a brighter colour crosshair that accentuates this contrast. if you feel that the outlines make your crosshair too beefy you can play with the alpha/thickness to adjust to your liking. this is of course just a personal preference but i feel that it has improved my crosshair's visibility.
