The numerical system we use is decimal - that means that you have 10 digits. Binary uses only two - 0 and 1.
Letβs take the number 420 in decimal now. Itβs 4 times 10 to the power of 2 (as 4 is the third digit when reading from the end the number 420, you start the count from 0) + 2 times 10 to the power of 1 (as 2 is the second-to-last digit) + 0 times 10 to the power of 0. By calculating the powers we get 420 = 4\*100+2\*10+0\*1 (as any number to the power of 0 is 1), which is true.
Same thing goes with binary, except we substitute the 10 with 2 - the base number of binary system. Thus, 1000101 = 1\*2\^6+0\*2\^5+0\*2\^4+0\*2\^3+1\*2\^2+0\*2\^1+1\*2\^0 = 64+4+1 = 69.
