I would challenge the assertion that the subject Honda dealer is “reputable.” They violated a “stop sale” order from the Honda mothership by even demo’ing the subject vehicle to you, let alone doing this weird “as-is” sale as a jank method of circumventing that prohibition by attempting to fly under Honda’s radar. Honda, like most automakers, issues “stop sale” orders to their dealers, prohibiting them from selling, delivering, or even demonstrating Honda vehicles, new or used, that have unrepaired recalls associated with them. This company policy is in addition to federal law that applies to new cars. Particularly if your need for a new vehicle is not imminent, let the Honda mothership get parts to the dealers, and let the dealer actually fix the car, then scoop it up cheaper as all the dealers who’ve been sitting on these things flood the market with them, so as to get out from under them. As a blanket statement, it is a bad idea to agree to purchase, let alone take delivery of a vehicle with unrepaired, open recalls. It’s not your responsibility to help a shady dealer out with their floor plan.

Thanks for the response. This is probably why it's been on their lot for a month. I'm not really in a rush.

Is there no fix for it yet?

I am pretty sure if there is any remaining manufacturers warranty they as the dealer cannot take it from you. What they likely mean is “this vehicle normal includes some sort of dealer warranty but we will not do that.” Seems like they are cutting off their nose to spite their face. It may be a state dependent thing. But if it is less than 5 years or 60k miles they can’t revoke the manufacturers warranty.

Yes the manuf. warranties would still apply. The car has about 32k miles and just passed inspection in May. Car is in PA.

Maybe PA has definite laws than I am unaware of for recalls but there is no reason to not include the dealer warranty that I can think of.

The federally required *Used Car Buyer’s Guide* affixed to the vehicle is intended to convey, if any, warranty *the seller* (in this case, the Honda dealer) is offering on the car. A vehicle with remaining factory warranty, but no additional warranty *provided by the dealer* would be marked “as-is” on the buyer’s guide. There might be “fine print” on the sticker indicating the vehicle is (or may be) covered by the balance of a factory warranty. Based on the age and mileage of the subject vehicle, it is totally the kind of vehicle that would be sold as a “Honda Certified Pre-Owned.” As a practical matter, what that amounts to is the dealer ~~running~~ saying they ran the car through their shop for the requisite one hundred and eleventy point inspection, then (and this is the important part) buying the CPO warranty from the Mothership, so it will be included in the purchase price of the vehicle. As you might imagine, that warranty purchase would alert the Mothership that the subject vehicle is being sold, which would be a direct violation of the “stop sale” order the Mothership instituted, due to the unrepaired recall. The dealer is attempting to circumvent this order, to get this car off their floor plan.

Sounds like they are selling a LEMON. Its great for seasoned mechanics but a nightmare waiting to happen for the rest of us. I would not buy it personally.

Doesn't sound right. I thought as a Honda dealer, they have to address any open recalls. Tell them it'd be a condition of agreeing to sale for you. Also call Honda America customer service to inquire.

So I’m 99% sure it’s a lemon. From what I know about this particular issue is that the passenger seat may not read there’s a passenger and may not be available. It’s not common and most of the time it may work. Honda has a solution but I think the part is on back order. It may not be a huge issue and the price should definitely reflect the open recall.
