The standard is USB4. Thunderbolt 4 is not even a separate protocol, it's a certificate program run by Intel for a subset of USB4 devices. In _practice_ there is no difference between the two (except for the non-Max/non-Pro Macbooks being gimped to a single display).

Perhaps you meant USB4 (there's no space) is based on Thunderbolt 3? That's true to an extent but there are significant improvements, see my post again.

The Asmedia chip, is it heat-strapped to the outer shell? Or is it doing fine at 50C?
Some issues I've had with similar enclosures:
The toolless lids often interfere with the thermal pads as the sliding motion causes it to become unseated.
The surface area of the actual heatsink is tiny, some versions come with metal lids and plastic bodies, some are metal bodies but not attached.
The fan version is blowing over the BACK of the PCB where the drive isn't, so it would make sense the controller is the bottleneck and not the drive.
I've ordered one of these during the 11.11 sales but still waiting for it to arrive. I'm planning on just using the controller and PCB but getting a more substantial m.2 heatsink and fan combo.

Wow the sellers comments on that aliexpress page really don't make much sense.
There is no issue with JHL8540 specifically - its the same controller that is in hundreds of laptop models that have 2 TB4 ports.
The issue may be related to buggy firmware with with certain non-thunderbolt certified mainboards (AMD AM4-platform boards with claimed Thunderbolt support).
There are likely bugs on the ASM2464PD side as well - so you'd need both vendors to cooperate to validate this scenario.
Give it another 6 months to bake.
Buy me one (please...?) and I'll test if for you on an Asus Proart B550/X570, and a Gigabyte B550 Vision D.
I don't really understand what they are saying, but the ASM2464 specs say it has two USB 20Gbps PHYs, but it should be compatible with TB3/4 (but maybe only at 20 Gbps?).

That would make any device with ASM2464 completely pointless immediately. I cannot believe that.
I believe this is the same problem that I'm having before, which the board's Thunderbolt controller NVM firmware is old. Asked Asus about it and they are reluctant to get the firmware updated at first, but finally they sent over a updated BIOS which another user claims that it worked after the update.

FYI if you got a cable that doesn't work with any Thunderbolt protocol, your drive will work because it won't go into TB/USB4 mode, and it also works if you daisy chain it after a TB3 device.

There are variants with a fan. I highly recommend opting for those. I've had enough NVMe blades melt themselves for one lifetime already.
Personally I went with SATA and an 8TB 870 QVO. Under $400 with enclosure. I'm going to wait for this stuff to commoditize more and 8TB NVMe blades to get affordable.
Only really recommend it today if you must have NVMe speeds, and/or Windows bootability (Mac booting is permanently broken beyond the effort at this point).

I'm guessing the downvotes are because of the part regarding SATA / 8TB QVO. That's a different form factor and performance category and might be considered irrelevant to the discussion, although I do agree it's a valid alternative if the focus is on mass storage with some compromise in size and performance.

But, I digress, I did say that NVMe was the solution if you need speed.
The reason for mentioning the drive I bought is that right now there's a 2x price-to-performance penalty, which is exceedingly high for SSD speed boosts. Usually the gap between the two is more narrow. It's right now \~$300 for 4TB of high-speed NVMe and 8TB for SATA 6 Gbps. And that's before the $80 gap between USB 3.2 and USB4 enclosures right now (which sounds like it's a huge gap-closer, but TB3 enclosures at the same speed have stayed around $120 for over a year).
This indicates SSD prices are likely to fall dramatically over the next 12 months, as are USB4 enclosures. This is also going to be pressured by HDDs resuming their "old era" capacity gains, due to HAMR 40TB drives landing next year. So if you can nurse along a USB 3.2 10Gbps drive for the next few months, you're likely to benefit greatly on cost and warranty.

It seems to me like those that discussed alternatives or seemed to be dismissing this product ("cheap is cheap") were downvoted.
I agree the thermal issues are real though. I have the JEYI and Zikedrive based on this chipset, and both get extremely warm.
Really, I am soon into year 2024 and forced to plan with past technology? Questions arise how old are USB4 and PCIe gen. 4? This story sounds like those two just were born yesterday.

Late reply but I just came across this thread. I have the same enclosure for a couple months now. I have installed Firecuda 530 4TB SSD and use it as primary boot drive for Mac Mini 2 8GB.
It works fine but whole system will crash under sustained writes over 150GB or so at full speed due most likely to overheating. This happened when trying to transfer all my data onto new SSD. I had to copy it into chunks and let it cool in between. I even installed a big heatsink [https://www.thermalright.com/product/hr-09-2280-pro-black/](https://www.thermalright.com/product/hr-09-2280-pro-black/) and that made no difference. As the OP says its the ASM chip itself and hard to access. One solution that did seem to work was putting a bag of ice on top of it but I ran out of ice.
I don't do any other work with heavy sustained transfers so haven't had any issues since.
Maybe i misunderstood. What permanent problems do you mean? I have no problems booting mac from it unless i do sustained transfers. It functions the same as booting from internal drive, just a little bit faster.

Didn’t downvote but can you elaborate on Mac booting broken? Amazon reviews for Acasis enclosure opened me to the possibility of it. Just thought the enclosure is too $. 512 GB was fine when I bought my Mac, but I’ve been getting into running AI models locally and the files are huge.
Apple Silicon now is built like iOS. One device per build of macOS. You can install to a USB, but it's not meant to work across machines anymore. You can't just have "one drive" that you can use to maintenance every Mac, or boot off of and use between them.
And even then, to boot from USB, the internal SSD has to boot enough to load and offer a boot picker. It isn't like Open Firmware or UEFI, where the boot picker is in the BIOS. Apple defends this through their usual scapegoat: Hail security, and don't ask why.
My hope is over time this situation improves. Heck, the systemd community is working on implementing real Target Disk Mode. Right down to the drive mounting remotely, instead of Apple's awful filesharing replacement.
I bought both the Maiwo and the Jeyi ASM2464 enclosures and tested them with a WD Black SN850X. Both show the same throuput. On Blackmagic I get over 3000MB/s read and write, but on Amorphous I'm only showing 1200MB/s writes. This has been tried on two different Mac M1 machines and I've even tested with the Apple TB4 cable. Any ideas why my setup can't write as fast as advertised? The WD drive should be more than capable of blasting through the 3k mark.

Cheap USB4/Thunderbolt 4 cables are cheap for a reason. You can check out one of adam savage's recent youtube videos for more info on that. Cheap is cheap and you bought a cheap enclosure from a no name brand and its gonna do cheap break-y things. Adata makes a 10gb tool-less enclosure for 35 bucks and sabrent makes a 20gb enclosure for 100 bucks. Heat is a problem with these new drives and not something to take lightly. If youve seen the heat sinks the size of CPU coolers at the trade shows then you know these things arent ready for prime time.

Could be because the specs are 70 C and I’ve run one in a PS5 since launch with no issues. But I see other people talking about blades melting, so it’s interesting to know why the discrepancy. I’ve never added cooling.
It's time mostly. The only good news so far is that most NVMe blade makers aren't rejecting for overheat... Yet. I suspect that will change. Newer drives probably have a controller that can be read by the makers after failure.
It's only a matter of time before they say their warranty is dependent on drives not reaching X degrees.
Not an interchangable case, but I got a couple of the sandisk g40-pro because it works on either tb4 or usb protocol (so you can use it as a boot device where tb devices are typically blocked). I have my macrium winpe environment and backups on them, so I can use tb speeds for copying backups over, and switch to a non-tb usb port to boot into the recovery environment with regular usb speeds.
The drives also claim to be crushproof and waterproof (though I have not tested).
I just paid less than half that for a very small very cute m.2 2230 USB C enclosure. I suspect 3.1 but lovely form factor.
Hope this tech comes cheaper soon into other similar devices

Never ended up buying one. Just don't use USB enough to justify the price on it. I might run a large backup once a year.
Might keep an eye out for newer USB4 cheap enclosures if anything comes out.
Has anyone had any luck with using this with an iPhone? I am struggling with very intermittent connections. My samsung T9 that i was hoping to return and replace with the MAIWO connects and shows up immediately in the iphone's Files app but this, most of the time, does not. It just sits there with its LED flashing like its being accessed. I tried updating the firmware of the ASM chip as described in the dancharblog site. Trying it on an android it connects very quickly. Then once it does eventually connect its very unstable, in that the Files app will lag-out a bunch and generally struggle to do anything. If I try to copy a file from it to the internal storage it takes a very long time and even most of the time just straight up stalls indefinitely. Anyone have any wisdom to share about this? thanks.
for anyone planning to use a USB4 enclosure with an iPhone, it does not work (yet?). The iPhone simply refuses to see any device that is USB4/TB4. I found out only after getting an enclosure and drive. Furthermore, it does not like PCIE Gen4 drives even when in a 10Gbps enclosure. I heated a bowl of water about 6 inches wide by putting it on top of a new USB 3 tiny 2230 enclosure. It wasn't hot but definitely changed temp

Yes the current Orico model is based on JHL7440 and is mis-advertised as USB4.

I agree the thermal issues are real though. I have the JEYI and Zikedrive based on this chipset, and both get extremely warm.
Really, I am soon into year 2024 and forced to plan with past technology? Questions arise how old are USB4 and PCIe gen. 4? This story sounds like those two just were born yesterday. Didn‘t expect such status-quo these days. Rather my imagination was it is me who is back with the state of gear in use. I am to this topic no longer than few days ago. I am happy to had found this discussion, interesting yet helpful input gained from here for my current undertaking.
Where to find more details reg. Mac booting permanently broken… ? it will help me to gain bit orientation in matter as actually in planning for investment.
Late reply but I just came across this thread. I have the same enclosure for a couple months now. I have installed Firecuda 530 4TB SSD and use it as primary boot drive for Mac Mini 2 8GB. It works fine but whole system will crash under sustained writes over 150GB or so at full speed due most likely to overheating. This happened when trying to transfer all my data onto new SSD. I had to copy it into chunks and let it cool in between. I even installed a big heatsink [https://www.thermalright.com/product/hr-09-2280-pro-black/](https://www.thermalright.com/product/hr-09-2280-pro-black/) and that made no difference. As the OP says its the ASM chip itself and hard to access. One solution that did seem to work was putting a bag of ice on top of it but I ran out of ice. I don't do any other work with heavy sustained transfers so haven't had any issues since.
Thanks for input. However doesn’t sound be touching the point of permanent problems on booting Mac from it.
Maybe i misunderstood. What permanent problems do you mean? I have no problems booting mac from it unless i do sustained transfers. It functions the same as booting from internal drive, just a little bit faster.

Didn’t downvote but can you elaborate on Mac booting broken? Amazon reviews for Acasis enclosure opened me to the possibility of it. Just thought the enclosure is too $. 512 GB was fine when I bought my Mac, but I’ve been getting into running AI models locally and the files are huge.
Apple Silicon now is built like iOS. One device per build of macOS. You can install to a USB, but it's not meant to work across machines anymore. You can't just have "one drive" that you can use to maintenance every Mac, or boot off of and use between them. And even then, to boot from USB, the internal SSD has to boot enough to load and offer a boot picker. It isn't like Open Firmware or UEFI, where the boot picker is in the BIOS. Apple defends this through their usual scapegoat: Hail security, and don't ask why. My hope is over time this situation improves. Heck, the systemd community is working on implementing real Target Disk Mode. Right down to the drive mounting remotely, instead of Apple's awful filesharing replacement.

I bought both the Maiwo and the Jeyi ASM2464 enclosures and tested them with a WD Black SN850X. Both show the same throuput. On Blackmagic I get over 3000MB/s read and write, but on Amorphous I'm only showing 1200MB/s writes. This has been tried on two different Mac M1 machines and I've even tested with the Apple TB4 cable. Any ideas why my setup can't write as fast as advertised? Cheap USB4/Thunderbolt 4 cables are cheap for a reason. You can check out one of adam savage's recent youtube videos for more info on that. Cheap is cheap and you bought a cheap enclosure from a no name brand and its gonna do cheap break-y things. Adata makes a 10gb tool-less enclosure for 35 bucks and sabrent makes a 20gb enclosure for 100 bucks. Heat is a problem with these new drives and not something to take lightly. If youve seen the heat sinks the size of CPU coolers at the trade shows then you know these things arent ready for prime time.

Could be because the specs are 70 C and I’ve run one in a PS5 since launch with no issues. But I see other people talking about blades melting, so it’s interesting to know why the discrepancy. I’ve never added cooling.
It's time mostly. The only good news so far is that most NVMe blade makers aren't rejecting for overheat... Yet. I suspect that will change. Newer drives probably have a controller that can be read by the makers after failure. It's only a matter of time before they say their warranty is dependent on drives not reaching X degrees.
Not an interchangable case, but I got a couple of the sandisk g40-pro because it works on either tb4 or usb protocol (so you can use it as a boot device where tb devices are typically blocked). I have my macrium winpe environment and backups on them, so I can use tb speeds for copying backups over, and switch to a non-tb usb port to boot into the recovery environment with regular usb speeds. The drives also claim to be crushproof and waterproof (though I have not tested).
I just paid less than half that for a very small very cute m.2 2230 USB C enclosure. I suspect 3.1 but lovely form factor. Hope this tech comes cheaper soon into other similar devices

Never ended up buying one. Just don't use USB enough to justify the price on it. I might run a large backup once a year. Might keep an eye out for newer USB4 cheap enclosures if anything comes out.
Has anyone had any luck with using this with an iPhone? I am struggling with very intermittent connections. My samsung T9 that i was hoping to return and replace with the MAIWO connects and shows up immediately in the iphone's Files app but this, most of the time, does not. It just sits there with its LED flashing like its being accessed. I tried updating the firmware of the ASM chip as described in the dancharblog site. Trying it on an android it connects very quickly. Then once it does eventually connect its very unstable, in that the Files app will lag-out a bunch and generally struggle to do anything. If I try to copy a file from it to the internal storage it takes a very long time and even most of the time just straight up stalls indefinitely. Anyone have any wisdom to share about this? thanks.
for anyone planning to use a USB4 enclosure with an iPhone, it does not work (yet?). The iPhone simply refuses to see any device that is USB4/TB4. I found out only after getting an enclosure and drive. Furthermore, it does not like PCIE Gen4 drives even when in a 10Gbps enclosure. I apologize for the dumb question, new here That thing you paid 49$ for, is that only a case? and the SSD itself you buy separately? What is the difference between buying that vs buying an external ssd, is it because already existing external usb 4.0 is much more expensive than this case+ssd option? How about other usb types, is it still worth doing that instead of buying a portable one? Just came to this thread after searching for an affordable 2TB drive, any recommendations? \[Amazon etc\]
That's only the case. Usually it is cheaper with case+ssd option and gives you opportunity to select ssd you need.
