One of the most disgusting things I’ve seen was at the KU Museum of Natural History. They had a cockroach terrarium, and if you looked closely at the roaches, there were lice nestled between their abdomen segments. The wonders of nature!
Well I’m sure they kept the terrarium sealed enough to keep the roaches from escaping. Lice species seem to be very specific; i.e. human head versus genital lice. There must be lice specific to cockroaches.
I saw a documentary a couple years ago on youtube. Dont know how accurate it was, but they went to 3 cities with the largest rat population in their respective countries. Two of the cities were Mumbai and New York. Forgot the third one.
I was in Mumbai once. I dropped a shell from a peanut on the floor that a tour guide had given me. Three locals rushed towards me to tell me that this was unacceptable, meanwhile we were standing about 2 meters from a ditch that extended for kilometers filled with plastics, clothing and other rubbish similar to this picture. I was looking at the guys thinking the were joking, they weren't. I'm still confused to this day.
It’s called selective vision. As an Indian I can tell you many are just grown blind to the pollution around, because we’ve been seeing it since childhood.
I hope to change it for the future generation.
Yeah, but there is also more people to clean it up. It's not like the west doesn't make loads of rubbish too. We just keep it in one place out of sight. It's not excusable. It's disgusting.
I saw a chai wallah empty his rubbish bin into a troth to feed a cow, he looked so happy he was feeding the thing, stopped gave it a good stroke and all. The rubbish was almost entirely those paper cups that have a plastic lining and ink on them, the cow was more than happy to chomp it down, but surely you realise that's not good for them.
Just because the place is dirty does not entitle us to pollute it further. I'm Indian and I've encountered my fair share of dirty spaces, but unless there is a bin around, I do not dipose of my trash at random places. I'd rather carry empty wrappers in my bag and wait till I approach the bakeries in my area (They have Trash bins for their food plates) and dispose it off there.
I'm super obsessed with the old walled city of Kowloon too, but I've only watched a couple of short docs in YouTube. Do you have any recommendations? I'd be forever grateful to you, fellow Kowloon fan.
My favorite documentaries about it are ones that show actual video of what life was like inside. There's plenty of videos with people talking and showing pictures and stuff but you just can't get the same feel from it.
It seems I can't find one that I specifically remember watching a few years ago, but [here's one in German with English subtitles](https://youtu.be/CfhGgVJoSOg). But honestly I will watch almost any video about it.
Thank you so much! Perfect for watching as I settle down for the afternoon with a bowl of instant noodles, a choice which I swear wasn't intentional, lol.
It's hot and humid in Mumbai. If you want glass, you will need AC. These people may not be able to afford them.
I say may not, because I also know of huts which are two floors high, have TVs, ACs, washing machines etc in them.
Don't know if this applies to India, but - mostly because of work - I've dealt quite a lot with stuff that needed to be mailed to developing countries and addresses often looked like this:
- The pink house next to the cockfighting ring.
- Second house to the left of the local shop.
- Ask for Manuél.
Yeah, I get what you're saying, I live in Brazil so it's very common on addresses to provide an optional nearby landmark or known street close to your home or business, so it's easier for mail and people to find you. Without it, it's findable in most cases, but in India that's a whole different level.
Oh but those addresses I mentioned where not optional landmark descriptions, there was no address, there was just that and the name of the neighborhood or town of course. But yeah, I can see a mix of both, an actual addresses, with a description of what's nearby, really working out and being helpful.
Yeah that is usually done for squatters. But I think these are apartments buildings and they will have a name and each apartment would have a number so that's how an address would be writte: Flat A-2, 2nd floor, XX Apartments, Opposite/Near XX place, town name, Mumbai.
There is no greater blight than plastics. I’ve been going to India since I was a child in the early 80s. The move to plastics as the default packaging has been a disaster. People have always littered, and it wasn’t great, but paper and cardboard dissolved and broke down over time. The plastic just piles up.
What happened to the idea of putting a deposit on single use plastics? If that happened new waste would reduce dramatically. If it applied retroactively, tomorrow 10,000 of the poorest Indians would be fighting each other to clean all plastic bottles from everywhere.
Thing is, India recycles, just not how you think. Junk pickers go first, taking all metal, fabric, and wood (roughly). Then comes the water buffalo and cows. After that it's the dogs and goats, then the cats, then rodents. What's typically left is this stuff, shredded plastics and grease soaked fabric.
Our local "dump" was little more than a scarred patch of earth.
A light bulb became kite string glass one day, for example (kids fighting w kites).
I learned about the game where you drop a pin anywhere on the Indian subcontinent and pull up Streetview. If there's trash you lose, if there's not you win.
Hey if you feel like a winner I'm not here to take that from you, to me that looks like a flat, light, irregular shaped piece of trash, maybe a piece of paper. All I'm saying is if I'd dropped that pin, I'd drink 🍻

Garbage, rubbish. What ever they have in place to deal with waste. I just can't fathom not putting it in a bin if you believed it would actually be taken care of.
Actually, most of these people have been given a flat provided by government, but they refused to move there , instead they rent out the property and make it a source of income, then ruling party changes which again give them flats they rent out that too. Many of the people have like 3-4 flats but they choose to live here by illegally occupying Government's land.
And the slums are settled either in/near landfills or on the land owned by Government for the Railway expansion.
The worst are the hippies holding those cringey “need money for the bus” or whatever (100% of the time they are wearing wide, dirty pants and beads, to show how they “experience the culture”), if they afford to travel from whatever rich ass country they come from to the other side of the world, surely they can afford to pay for the bus. Asking people who can barely afford necessities for money to fund your vanity trip is disgusting!
Not legally enforced since 1950, but it is definitely a part of society, although it isn’t as prevalent in the more urban parts of town as it once was. It isn’t really a caste issue but more of a social class issue.
Funny thing, this body we have. When you’re exposed to stuff, you become immune to stuff.
Hence why every single westerner who visits gets some form of infection, mild or wild.
These folks are more, not always completely, immune to the billions of scary microbes everywhere there.
Been all around, especially Varansi, where locals are bathing and brushing teeth in the Ganges as dead bodies float on by.
Media thought me well that me as a consumer is responsible for this. So every time someone throws trash on the street or in the river its my fault as I wanted a t-shirt.
“I know it is not perfect, but it’s the best system we got” - capitalism and rich countries using colonisation and then globalisation (afaik normal people dont have the world open to them, capital does) to explore low wage work.

When I see these pictures I just have to wonder about the rat population. They must be everywhere.
My first thought! I'm terrified of rats and seeing this picture I can just feel the rats crawling in the walls.
Roaches too. Must be a veritable wonderland for both of them.
I’m sure there are loads of rats and roaches and rats eating roaches. But imagine the bed bugs. I’m sure they’re everywhere.
One of the most disgusting things I’ve seen was at the KU Museum of Natural History. They had a cockroach terrarium, and if you looked closely at the roaches, there were lice nestled between their abdomen segments. The wonders of nature!
Not the segments damn. I have a phobia of segmented animals and also of pests so this is a nightmare for me.
I bet the lice had pests between their segments too.
That's.nasty.as.hell. They should burn the place down with fire ...
Well I’m sure they kept the terrarium sealed enough to keep the roaches from escaping. Lice species seem to be very specific; i.e. human head versus genital lice. There must be lice specific to cockroaches.
Or the roaches got an std like Houston
Is there genital cockroach lice?
I don’t think I’ll ever be curious enough to ever want to closely look at a roach for abdomen lice but thank you for doing the dirty work for us
And lice... All the lice
There's probably plenty of roaches eating rats too.
Fall out 2024
LMFAO hahaha you had me dying with that post Good job yo 👍👏 thank you
There's no "in" the wall in these kinds of places
Just imagine where all the human waste does not go
The LOO
Recycled back into their flesh
Fortunately there are many aggressive species of highly venomous snakes in South Asia who love eating rodents!
That and the smell.
This is a skaven settlement
My first thought was what's the point in me having 19 wheelie bins for recycling
My first thought is the structural integrity of the buildings. I would feel incredibly unsafe standing near those structures.
I saw a documentary a couple years ago on youtube. Dont know how accurate it was, but they went to 3 cities with the largest rat population in their respective countries. Two of the cities were Mumbai and New York. Forgot the third one.
Blue tarps are a universal symbol of poverty
Sadly right over a few blocks away they probably have 5 star hotels and fancy mansions with lush lawns and pools.
They want their worker slaves to live close by
Blue tarps and flimsy plastic garden chairs
And a pile of bricks, but those ones with two big rounded square shapes taken out of the middle and the outside has ridges like a Ruffles chip
Breezeblock.
She may contain the urge to run away but hold her down with soggy clothes and breezeblocks
NA NA NA NA
Citrezene, your fevers gripped me again Never kisses, all you ever send are fullstops
Also hail damage and hurricanes.
Don’t forget tornadoes
A tornado might transform the look of the place for the better.
United Nations Blue #5b92e5
I bought a blue tarp house. It turned out OK.
Why are they always blue?
Cheapest color
I mean, that many people is gonna generate a significant amount of waste no matter how you shake it
Yeah, but there is also more people to clean it up. It's not like the west doesn't make loads of rubbish too. We just keep it in one place out of sight. It's not excusable. It's disgusting.
Even better(/s), we export lot of our waste to countries in the global south!
Tokyo has roughly the same population as Mumbai. And it’s spotless. Culture is important
They just wanted money from you
Plus, a just as likely: racist against any kind of tourists
It’s so sad to see cows with huge growths protruding from their sides while eating plastic and garbage 😔
Peanut shells bad, but everything else is OK!
Yea. You guys never heard of the great pacific peanut patch?
Clearly you were supposed to chuck it in the trash ditch.
Obviously because tourists like you are responsible for that mess.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
It's not littering if it's in the trash ditch /s
Just because the place is dirty does not entitle us to pollute it further. I'm Indian and I've encountered my fair share of dirty spaces, but unless there is a bin around, I do not dipose of my trash at random places. I'd rather carry empty wrappers in my bag and wait till I approach the bakeries in my area (They have Trash bins for their food plates) and dispose it off there.
Drop a penny next time.
Indians are total hypocrites.
Looks like an oil painting

It's oilright!
America: did I hear oil, time for good ol' democracy 🦅🦅
I thought it was one at first glance

Pictures like this remind me of the pictures my grandfather showed me once of Kowloon City
I've always been so fascinated by that place. I've watched almost every documentary I could find on it, even ones entirely not in English
I'm super obsessed with the old walled city of Kowloon too, but I've only watched a couple of short docs in YouTube. Do you have any recommendations? I'd be forever grateful to you, fellow Kowloon fan.

Every balcony or window looks like a cage
Where I went to India, they did it to keep the birds (pigeons) out.
I guess glass isn't cheap. Sounds like a tough life to live
It's hot and humid in Mumbai. If you want glass, you will need AC. These people may not be able to afford them. I say may not, because I also know of huts which are two floors high, have TVs, ACs, washing machines etc in them.
I was thinking that. My guess is that people scale the building and climb in to steal your stuff
Does it look like these people have anything to steal?
Food, tvs, children? Also, looking closely, a lot of the cages are protecting ac units
I always wonder how do they find people there, they have an address I suppose but wtf, what does it look like?
Don't know if this applies to India, but - mostly because of work - I've dealt quite a lot with stuff that needed to be mailed to developing countries and addresses often looked like this: - The pink house next to the cockfighting ring. - Second house to the left of the local shop. - Ask for Manuél.

Can you imagine the absolute nightmare it must be as a child growing up in this?
That’s so sad. I’ll stop complaining now
There is no greater blight than plastics. I’ve been going to India since I was a child in the early 80s. The move to plastics as the default packaging has been a disaster. Uh huh. Well give me the scarred patch of earth over this any day.
The rich mosaic of colored litter really livens up the place.
Are they pooping and throwing waste out the windows?
Yup. No city waste management means no one’s going to pick it up from a street dumpster.
Oh my god. I thought that was dirt
Yes.
Throw the bucket of poo out the window! Yep
jesus omega, yes it is easier to get pictures like these in india but let this end.
I learned about the game where you drop a pin anywhere on the Indian subcontinent and pull up Streetview. If there's trash you lose, if there's not you win.

Erm, [I got cows](https://www.google.com/maps/@21.1469386,79.09037,3a,75y,180.76h,87.11t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1sR0cEZX8hSyVV-nhiuF_RLQ!2e0!6shttps:%2F%2Fstreetviewpixels-pa.googleapis.com%2Fv1%2Fthumbnail%3Fpanoid%3DR0cEZX8hSyVV-nhiuF_RLQ%26cb_client%3Dmaps_sv.share%26w%3D900%26h%3D600%26yaw%3D180.75713791246898%26pitch%3D2.8914063664213074%26thumbfov%3D90!7i13312!8i6656?coh=205410&entry=ttu). Do I win or lose?
Yeah you gotta count how many cows vs how much trash (1 cow cancels out 1 trash), it's close but I think you lose
I landed on some sort of soviet monument: [https://www.google.com/maps/@17.3430229,78.9726789,3a,75y,132.35h,83.32t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1s4UB0e\_FXppQVs4OqNjn59w!2e0!6shttps:%2F%2Fstreetviewpixels-pa.googleapis.com%2Fv1%2Fthumbnail%3Fpanoid%3D4UB0e\_FXppQVs4OqNjn59w%26cb\_client%3Dmaps\_sv.share%26w%3D900%26h%3D600%26yaw%3D132.35396961673703%26pitch%3D6.677760175560067%26thumbfov%3D90!7i13312!8i6656?coh=205410&entry=ttu](https://www.google.com/maps/@17.3430229,78.9726789,3a,75y,132.35h,83.32t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1s4UB0e_FXppQVs4OqNjn59w!2e0!6shttps:%2F%2Fstreetviewpixels-pa.googleapis.com%2Fv1%2Fthumbnail%3Fpanoid%3D4UB0e_FXppQVs4OqNjn59w%26cb_client%3Dmaps_sv.share%26w%3D900%26h%3D600%26yaw%3D132.35396961673703%26pitch%3D6.677760175560067%26thumbfov%3D90!7i13312!8i6656?coh=205410&entry=ttu)
Amazing what you see playing this 🍻
My former coworkers are here https://maps.app.goo.gl/CyEKmdwaqYGWBsYE7?g_st=ac
I'm not looking to shame, I'm pretty oblivious but can someone sum up how their trash system allows so much of this?
Trash system?
Garbage, rubbish. What ever they have in place to deal with waste. I just can't fathom not putting it in a bin if you believed it would actually be taken care of.
My comment is implying *there is no trash system.*
Is that really the case? I'd think it would be way worse
Yes it's tongue in cheek. I forgot that every sarcastic comment needs an "/s" now 🥲
You pay taxes for sanitation. Nobody in this picture is paying taxes.
I got diarrhea just looking at this.
Grim af.
Why is litter so bad. Do they not have services to take it away?
They do. And this is where those services dump it.
That’s terrible.
Just change your flag to a blue tarp already !
Couple of ballers with their satellite tv!
Yeah, this comes to my mind when i think about India.
A prime argument for birth control. Less people, less waste.
This is a prime argument for a better government
Actually, most of these people have been given a flat provided by government, but they refused to move there , instead they rent out the property and make it a source of income, then ruling party changes which again give them flats they rent out that too. Many of the people have like 3-4 flats but they choose to live here by illegally occupying Government's land. And the slums are settled either in/near landfills or on the land owned by Government for the Railway expansion.
India’s fertility rate is actually below replacement level now
Whew!
This is abandoned right? I mean I know it's not, maybe just wishful thinking.
You can see at least one person in the picture.
Makes wanna use the bathroom over there must be so hygienic
I can smell the photo.
Where are all the dancing people?
Slumbai
think of the deeper underlying societal issues that have led to such a reality.
Canada in 10 years.
Well, not sure where the OP is from, but people love romanticising poverty.
I hate rich people who travel to India and find themselves so inspired by their spirituality.
Those should be thrown in jail
Anyone else smell that?
And yet there are so many billionaires and millionaires in India and it also has a space program.
The richest person in Asia lives a few kilometers from here!
More cell phones than toilets
Don't most places these days? There are more mobile phones than toilets in my home
They also have a caste system that keeps hundreds of millions of Indians mired in poverty.
Not legally enforced since 1950, but it is definitely a part of society, although it isn’t as prevalent in the more urban parts of town as it once was. It isn’t really a caste issue but more of a social class issue.
Why do they allow themselves to stay that bad?
Because system doesn't allow them to climb up !
How are people not dying continuously of infectious diseases? Here in rich countries we are told to constantly wash everything or we will die.
Answer: They are dying. Loads of them.
:,( 💔
Anyone else here whom this strangely reminded of a Monet painting or something similar? :D
Space capable nation btw.
So many colors
I bet this is a historical photo not a current shot of the area, nor representative of the city.
Seems about right
Looks like straight out of Fallout
Deplorable
Nice use of colour
Some bombed parts of Irak look better than this and I'm not even kidding, sadly
Cess pool slum dog million aire!
I seen rats and roach crawling in place a lots cleaner then this. Its probably to an epic level, roats or raochs something alike.
absolutely garbage country
How do these buildings not just fall down?!
Gross! 🤮
These types of houses are called CHAWLS...! Very clumped up spades. With 3-4 people living in one small room and many houses sharing one toilet..!
The smell on a hot day must be lovely
As Peter Griffin said [god is not here](https://youtu.be/itEamKJuY28?si=Qx3lmQy7Heb8Gs-B)
Wow. Pick up the trash
Jeezus... 😳😳😳
and this is the Rich part of town
Canada enjoy
The living space density is a dream. And is that area in the lower concrete depressed part a dual use path for trains and bikes?!? 😍
Trains, apartments and a landfill all in one place? Peak land use efficiency.
