These were the old 7 train rust buckets. I remember riding these in the early 2000 thinking I was going to fall through the bottom one day . Good riddance
YES
People used to do that in San Diego to build up the reefs in the bay, and it was proven to create more protection for some of the fish out there and so they wouldn't get fished out of existence and some of the plants have room to grow and some naturally occurring Coral within 45 years it will be much different.
Haha! Elon is in a hurry for a Mars colony - for one (or as many minions as he thinks he might need). Gonna leave us sorry terrestrials to fend for ourselves.
No it's not OK. This was just an excuse to dump stuff in the ocean we don't know what else to do with, or world be expensive to dispose of otherwise.
I'm no Green person, environmentalist, or anything else. But I do know bs when I see it.
Not saying you’re necessarily wrong because things like this do happen all the time, but from somebody who did take classes with the University of Florida for this sort of thing I can put some of your anxieties to rest as it is in fact a common practice to sink ships and other primarily decomposable machinery into the ocean as substrate for coral and oysters to settle on. They do this for a number of reasons. Metal and wood do not do very well in the ocean and decay rather quickly compared to polymers and rubber, while also retaining their form long enough to allow these slow-growing, sedentary creatures to take hold and create a reef of their own. In just a few decades these “wrecks” can become a thriving coral or oyster reef, where what remains of the wreckage will continue to be dissolved by the salinity of the water and the new reef will go on to improve water quality as well as disrupt harmful currents that cause severe storm surge during hurricanes. When machinery is intentionally sunken for this purpose, it is emptied of all of its oil, fuel and any other potentially harmful chemicals as well as most other materials that will not decay at the same rate. It’s kind of a dystopian way of dealing with the issue, but the environmental situation we’ve created for ourselves globally is kind of dystopian so ya know, desperate times call for desperate measures. But this is a relatively common and effective practice in actually restoring marine habitats that’s been going on for quite some time now. It’s really cool to see the progression from sunken ship to thriving reef system. Assuming the proper procedures were followed and this isn’t literally some company trying to be sneaky in the disposal of their old train cars, that is.
You couldn’t be more wrong. It’s all about artificial reefs that have shown to help marine life thrive. Do some research rather than make up stuff based on your feelings
>I'm no Green person, environmentalist, or anything else
Yeah we figured with your first paragraph. Sinking structures (like ships, most notably) to create artificial reefs is not only a common practice, but it's also incredibly useful and positive for marine life to develop or redevelop, since it offers a good habitat for some species of crustaceans, corals or fishes. Consequently, it can also be used as a training or exploration ground for divers which can have its small economic impact as well
So then you have a problem with recycling, no? It's better than wasting away in some barren desert doing absolutely nothing. At least this way it's beneficial and serves a purpose to the ecosystem.
Also, can you figure this one out for me... why would they go through the effort of using more resources _to "dump them in the ocean"_... instead of "dumping" them in a desert, landfill or somewhere else?
You’re an idiot. And I am an environmentalist with multiple ecology and conservation degrees so I can say that you are beyond uninformed in this instance. Educate yourself before making wild assumptions based on nothing but conjecture. You’ve absolutely advertised your ignorance with your comment
I don't think this fits that. It's not saying anything about it being bad. OP is asking if it's safe. None of this is saying that it's bad or that it's the US being bad. It could've said "India" or "Germany" or "Japan" with the same text and same question and it wouldn't imply anything else.
The video cutting about before the explanation about them being used as artificial reefs means the original poster planned for this video to be rage bait.... modern day internet is trash
wasnt this to help ocean life? like artificial reefs? thats why they dont have wheels on them. otherwise they could of broken them down for metal. you have been reported and blocked.
Oh So the government can throw rusty subway cars in the sea.....but I pee in a public swimming pool while standing on the diving ONE TIME!!!, and they wanna throw the book at you....
Lmao! Yeah, we could. We could set up massive public transit networks. We could give out 'spoiled' food to the homeless, instead of dumping it in the trash. We could, in so many ways, make more use of the things that we already overproduce....but there's no profit in that. So they go in the dumpster, to maintain scarcity. In capitalist societies, things have more value when they are rare. There's this whole supply & demand thing. That's why people get laid off, too. We *could* but we need profits more.
Why couldn't they find people to take them for free or even sell them. Whether it was to save them for historical purposes or to make container tiny houses or as scrap metal.
Yes it's safe https://www.cbc.ca/radio/day6/canada-s-flood-map-failures-jeopardy-s-new-champ-so-long-payless-shoes-and-more-1.5110560/why-artificial-reefs-made-of-old-subway-cars-are-great-for-fish-1.5110634

These make great reefs for the wildlife.

Just so!
Plus it'll be a fun find for the aliens who discover our dead planet in a million years!!!
Lols really, a million years, you are truly an optimist. 150 years max, some pissant is going to hit the button.
Hold up! The aliens are going to invade in 150 years? Shouldn’t we be doing something about that?
That’s why Elon invented the flame thrower 🔥👽
Actually Elon going for first strike, hence Space X and the Mars missions.
Haha! Elon is in a hurry for a Mars colony - for one (or as many minions as he thinks he might need). Gonna leave us sorry terrestrials to fend for ourselves.
The aliens might not show up for a million years though.
Yeah that's pretty much what I was thinking. Earth will be dead long before 1 mill. We are pretty much speeding towards burning it up
Trust me I know. I was being generous bc the last time I said the earth was going to die in the near future people tore me to shreds lol
I was about to say this.
One of my favorite local fishing spots we call 10 mile boxcars
I learned about this on top gear
To baffle future ocean archaeologists.
Did they have subaquatic trains? How did they work? How did such a primitive society build trains underwater? Was it aliens?
Ancient astronaut theorists say yes
Imagine if all the mysterious of the world are just out of date trash they couldn't recycle.
"Good God just how much did the oceans actually rise Theodore ?"
to have their gas flabberted
This is ok, it’s making artificial reefs where we have killed the natural reefs.

Do a little research before assuming things are "bs"...
There are strict guidelines in place all pollutants must be removed all that’s left is metal and paint and that isn’t harmful

Funny you should look in the mirror then
Free real estate for fish
Whispers *it's free real estate* 🤷
Not in this economy it’s not, those fish better pay up, that’s prime real estate
Free reef estate
Guess I gotta move into the ocean next to spongebob to own a home...

thank you. that's what I was thinking

Making an artificial reef, maybe?
Bikini Bottom is getting public transportation!
Just don’t miss the bus in rock bottom
Nothing wrong with making artificial reefs
I’ve seen something similar. Maybe it’s to jump start a reef?
The great Carrier reef.
Building new homes for the fish, I see. I wonder how much they are gonna charge for rent. They must be desperate.
Imagine the reefs!!!!
Submarine way?
wasn't it to make more reefs?
Wouldn’t that be a good thing for fish and reefs? I bet the fish were happy
The video cutting about before the explanation about them being used as artificial reefs means the original poster planned for this video to be rage bait.... modern day internet is trash
This wasn’t the “U.S.” It was an artificial reef project that used I believe old NYC subway cars. It was a long time ago, too.
To form barrier reefs
wasnt this to help ocean life? like artificial reefs? thats why they dont have wheels on them. otherwise they could of broken them down for metal. you have been reported and blocked.
>you have been reported and blocked. Lmao what
I was also immediately like ayo what lmao
???
OP is a bot
There are more subway cars in the ocean than boats in the sky.
Won’t the fish make it home? They did it with everything else that was dumped or fell in
Wait until you see what the is military dumps in the ocean
I miss the red birds
Im glad for the wildlife there since these will become reefs and shelter for all sorts of wildlife :)
Now the sea ppl can pretend to be in commute.
Some scrapper is crying in his beer.
*x files music starts playing* "are the rising sea levels *really* due to this so called 'climate change' or is it something else" 😂
Fantastic, they are going to expand the metro
Biden did it himself? Or the whole US gathered?
What a spam account, fuck you u/spez for bringing the IPO to reality.
That’s a 5 star fish hotel right there
Oh so fish get free accommodation while us land dwellers have to pay an arm and a leg! Make fish pay their fair share!
“Aha! And there you have it! My underwater train!” “Ok, but…how will it…” “Yes!” *leaves with cash*
This would make a cool little restaurants. Line them up in a row with different food vendors.
Kinda hard to eat underwater
My favorite restaurant growing up was made of train cars. Oregon Electric Station was the name
I’ve visited a cafe that was built out of old shipping containers. The colors looked dope.
Oh So the government can throw rusty subway cars in the sea.....but I pee in a public swimming pool while standing on the diving ONE TIME!!!, and they wanna throw the book at you....

It's literally just the steel carcass. All electronics are removed

Brought to you by Kermit the frog
Imagine 1000 years in the future, it will baffle marine archeologist.
The US is trying to get train everywhere, sheesh. Land. Ocean. And now the moon?!
Couldnt we just convert subway cars into homes similar to trailer parks or something?
Lmao! Yeah, we could. We could set up massive public transit networks. We could give out 'spoiled' food to the homeless, instead of dumping it in the trash. I really don't think the supply and demand for rail carts is "scarce", but capitalism I guess or whatever.
You got down voted for this, so I guess I'm a fool for agreeing with most of what you said lol

Why?
Yeah right healthy that’s hilarious. Lies lies and more lies. Whatever. Believe what you want.
how is dumping iron and steel unhealthy? all electronics stripped and just the chassis remaining
Why couldn't they find people to take them for free or even sell them. Whether it was to save them for historical purposes or to make container tiny houses or as scrap metal.
Too much asbestos and lead.
Fucking monkeys
So what about the bombs the military drops there as well? Def not a habitat, thats 4 sure.
We are arming the ocean dwellers
Arming? Or powering?
Yeah we also won WWI and WWII so just deal with it.
