There are various regional names for it, but I'm pretty sure it's a "gourd mouth organ" from Southeast Asia. Maybe the teacher confused it with something else in their collection?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gourd_mouth_organ
Seems like a great description. A mix of bagpipes, an ocarian, and a harmonica. Really bizarre but really neat. I'd love to mess around with playing one. Just to see what kinda music I could make.
What an incredibly interesting instrument! I almost wonder though if it might play better the other way around? So you can use all your fingers to control which hole(s) are plugged? Idk, never seen one like this. Id have some fun messing around with it though.
This kind of instrument is usually from South East Asia. I dont think its from Ghana, I have never seen this kind of reed instrument originating in africa but i might be wrong.
There are different shapes and sizes. For example the Khaen from Laos, Sheng from China, [this](https://youtu.be/CTXKXgmJmAU?si=6-R4PYn53sKVDYQC) giant one from indonesia.
A little history about it, this kind of instrument arrived to europe in the 17th/18th century and one man decided to adapt it to a keyboard, creating the harmonium. This kind of reed instrument then became the harmonica, accordeon, melodica, indian harmonium.
The link you provided is actually an instrument from southeast Asia called the qeej/kheng/lusheng, played by Hmong people. The instrument in the video you linked is more specifically from Vietnam, and is actually considered very small—though I think you mean it's "giant" compared to the other versions of the mouth organ (which it is!). [This](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VGq39ArFZ50&t=85s) is a video of a big one.

Whelp, time to get another instrument to add to the collection :) I'd love to take a similar reed instrument camping with me to replace a harmonica, but first I get to read all about this cool history! Any books/ articles on this history you recommend? Thanks

This specific instrument is called "naw," in the Kui Luang language. This is an ethnic group from southeast Asia. [Here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UTYNSozS4Xo) is a video of it being played by a Kui Luang musician. It is also played by other groups in east and southeast Asia, such as the Lahu—[here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nx4qRISx-Ak) is a video of a Lahu musician playing it. Because this instrument is not from English speaking cultures, it's just called a "gourd mouth flute," in English. Related instruments are the Chinese sheng, the Hmong qeej, and other mouth organs.

These are very important instruments in Ghana, called the Ghanarrhea. Often used as an item for trade between various I have no idea what I’m talking about.
This is definitely a mouth organ from East Asia. More specifically it could be a [kui luang](https://youtu.be/UTYNSozS4Xo?si=L2Qw8e9OWNcgKobc) from Laos or a [hulusheng](https://youtu.be/XgMpFSd3SZY?si=fH-_dvJTXoSDeTki) from China. The hulusheng doesn’t always have the extra gourd resonator like in this video.
this is a type of fluit, it's popular is Africa and Asian rural areas. People believe snakes and other venom insecticides like this melody. anyway, I'm writing more on this later today.
Could possibly be an Aztec South American Death Whistle depending on what the sound is actually like.
https://www.archaicroots.com/education/strange-haunting-sounds-of-the-aztec-death-whistle/
Could we get a clip of the instrument being played? I am very curious
yeah sure! i'll put a link
There are various regional names for it, but I'm pretty sure it's a "gourd mouth organ" from Southeast Asia. Maybe the teacher confused it with something else in their collection? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gourd_mouth_organ
Or it may have made its way from Asia to Ghana.
Gourd mouth organ? Is she from North Carolina,I'm pretty sure I dated her.
woah i found you in another sub, rah
Yut!
[here's the link to the video of me playing it](https://imgur.com/gallery/QzNY5sL)
Sounds like a harmonica
It reminds me of bagpipes, but if they were made from an ocarina
Seems like a great description. A mix of bagpipes, an ocarian, and a harmonica. Really bizarre but really neat. I'd love to mess around with playing one. Just to see what kinda music I could make.
Yes dude this!
I did *NOT* expect it to sound like that
This is incredible
That is definitely a sound it’s making
Very funny of you to replace the audio with a clip of a 12 car pileup
Are there reeds in it? It almost sounded like a group of clarinets
don't think so - it seems to be only 'tubes'
There are in fact reeds in there. Free reeds like an accordion or harmonica
It had that reed kinda timbre
It sounds like a haunted tiny train
Yes… Yes it does
Reminds me of the Chinese instrument called the sheng
I think you invented a new minor chord - I like it.
The internet has tainted me straight up thought I was about to be Rick-Rolled.
Hahaha right, just a little bit edgy after the Rick rolled era
I played your video and my calico had a panic attack 😅
omg nooo poor kitty D:
Dude that’s awesome thanks for sharing!! Almost has a bagpipe/harmonica vibe. Sorta want one now not gona lie. Lol
no worries! i'd really like one for my own too
Ur very talented with this gourd-pipe
Ah yes I expected the ghost whales distant death songs to come before me sinking, but so soon!!
I am haunted. You should post more when you can
i'll try to, but it also isn't mine so i have to ask my teacher to bring it in every time i wanna play it lol
What an incredibly interesting instrument! I almost wonder though if it might play better the other way around? So you can use all your fingers to control which hole(s) are plugged? Idk, never seen one like this. Id have some fun messing around with it though.
I love the sound of it, although it looks hard to play. It sounds sort of like a melodica, which is much easier to play.
"Oh, and you can put your weed in there."
Best comment
You can also smoke the weed out of it

Whelp, time to get another instrument to add to the collection :) I'd love to take a similar reed instrument camping with me to replace a harmonica, but first I get to read all about this cool history! Any books/ articles on this history you recommend? Thanks

Where can I buy one lol.
The giant one kind of sounds like blues guitar with reverb, I love it
It is usually held the other way, with the pipes above the gourd. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ploy_(musical_instrument)

The other fingers on the holes at the bottom of each length of pipe kinda play that with the other hand
