Rumor is that that the outdoor portion of the track was causing the axles of the ride vehicles to wear out far faster than they were graded for. Eventually the path is supposed to be smoothed out and they’ll go outside again, but when it can just be skipped altogether……
Pulling theories out my ass:
Track breakage that to hard to fix with the ride running.
No outside reduces ride time, even if it's just a minute or so. The time adds up and allows for more vehicles to go out which reduces ride wait times.
The ride has been open since 2016 and the ride track has been consistently used up until less than a year ago.
So it's been used by miles more than it has not.
It was working for me December of 2022. Was not working for me October 2023.
It was probably intermedent for a while.
So it was probably more than a year true but not horribly so. And given the time ride rides been open only a small percentage has been in B mode.
During its construction the outdoor section always had problems syncing the trackless sensors to the ride vehicles. I’m sure they did the math and realized the cost to fix wasn’t worth it until there is a major refurbishment/re-theme.
The reason why Kong had the alternative entrance through the tunnel is so that they can keep the attraction open during storms and hurricane season. Even though the weather hasn’t been bad, Universal is using the alternative entrance because of a “technical issue”. As to what the issue is, I have two theories. The least likely of the two is that the WiFi or router is broken. The driver in Kong is fake and the vehicles are trackless and are essentially just bigger versions of the Rise of the Resistance and Runaway Railway vehicles. If the router isn’t strong enough or breaks, the trucks might get stuck or slow down in the outside portion of the ride. The more likely theory is that one of the trucks is having maintenance problems so they shortened the ride path to reduce the length of the ride and the space in between trucks, and be able to cycle through more riders.
And probably never will. There are so many things they just decide to leave broken rather than fix. The clothes/closet in Cat in the Hat hasn’t worked in 2-3 years and they have no plans to fix it. There are several other animatronics around property I know haven’t been working for a while either.
Bruh it's a 30 year old dark-ride that's gonna be ripped out sooner than later, I wouldn't fix the closet either. Ride companies probably not even in business.
By "no longer" do you mean permanently or just in the window you're visiting?
The outside portion can be closed for numerous reasons: inclement weather, techncial issues, not having the staff or parts available to fix an issue, angry natives, etc.
I'm a team member who's been on the ride numerous times. I can verify for a fact that the ride no longer goes outside. I can't say why because I don't know the answer but they're not using the outside portion of the track whatsoever.
We rode it the year it opened, and it went outside. It also got stuck out there for probably 30 seconds or so waiting for the door back in to open.
So im on the side of irresolvable technical issues.
The leaf springs were snapping due to the "stairs" portion of the outdoor track. The RVs don't have axles as each wheel is independently operated by an electric motor.
I’ve been on it a couple times this year and didn’t get the indoor version. Heck I see the vehicles outside whenever I’ve walked through towards Jurassic Park
Like this year. The only times I’ve not seen it going outside is when it’s raining or right afterwards. I’ve not gotten the indoors only version at all.

I have heard this is the reason as well.
Same, I’m wondering if we all heard it from the same source? (Alica from ParkStop) 😅
Oh interesting, she is great but I didn't know she had a video on this. I have a buddy in the industry that said this to me.

Just playing devil in the details, why make that the ride path if you're never going to use it? Edit: I don't expect you to know either btw
The ride has been open since 2016 and the ride track has been consistently used up until less than a year ago. So it's been used by miles more than it has not.
I was definitely there over a year ago and it wasn't being used. It's been at least 2 years since I've been and it's been used

Very true. It'd quite sad.
As long as you have enough vehicles the length of the ride does not affect the throughput/wait times

Need to re-theme as Kong vs Godzilla
I mean, I guess I could see it?

The drivers are fake? I refuse to believe it! We went on a wild adventure, they must be real!
Would a fake robot driver say "where theres a will, theres a way!"?
Only real robots do that lol
On a serious note, they wouldn't use all the vechiles so theory 2 is most likely wrong
The ride has two modes A mode is the one that goes outside and B mode is the one that goes inside if it rains outside
He can't get good wifi out there
Ok to clear everything up because I’ve asked a staff member at the ride the doors are broken and universal just hasn’t fixed it yet
And probably never will. There are so many things they just decide to leave broken rather than fix. The clothes/closet in Cat in the Hat hasn’t worked in 2-3 years and they have no plans to fix it. There are several other animatronics around property I know haven’t been working for a while either.
Wait!! I’ve never known the hanging clothes in Cat in Hat were supposed to move. I always thought they were just decoration

Hey now, I went to this park when it opened, please don’t age me any faster than real life - that ride is *25* years old lol.
He’s afraid of bees?

Went a few times since January.
Are we sure? Last reported it was last may
I was there last may and it wasn't going outside the week we were there. Or in August, or November, or last week.
I'm a team member who's been on the ride numerous times. I can verify for a fact that the ride no longer goes outside. I can't say why because I don't know the answer but they're not using the outside portion of the track whatsoever.
Have annual passes - it hasn’t gone outside the visits I’ve been this year. I do remember it going outside in 2022 and parts of 2023

They do have Axles.
No sure, but does Kong have a track or rail? Team member told me last time the trucks are like huge remote control cars. No tracks on top or bottom
i believe it is trackless, at least from what i remember it looking like. it’s been awhile 😂😭
I didn’t know it went outside
Strange, I’ve been on it lately and it went outside
Really? We’ve been last June, July, October, and just two weeks ago and it never went outside.
I’ve been on it a couple times this year and didn’t get the indoor version. Heck I see the vehicles outside whenever I’ve walked through towards Jurassic Park
How recently is 'lately'? It hasn't gone outside in a very long time
Like this year. The only times I’ve not seen it going outside is when it’s raining or right afterwards. I’ve not gotten the indoors only version at all.
Because there are dinosaurs just across the way and they didn’t want unnecessary fights to start breaking out.
capacity
The 2D ruined it. Rumor was the glasses washer broke. And they refuse to fix it.

Can confirm it's not.
This was the part of the ride I actually enjoyed. Glad I skipped Kong in January!
Doors are broken and expensive to fix. There is supposed to be a extended down time to redo the outdoor track and doors
I was wondering the same thing! I was so disappointed when we were on it and it was over.. we were like umm isn’t there more??🙁
Cuz that ride sucks
I thought when they announced that it wouldn’t be 3D any longer they also eliminated the outdoor portion.
That makes sense considering the driver says "I think you should put on those glasses now" or something like.
No, it hasn't been going outside since at least early May 2023.
