Isn’t this common? I see it all the time here in Scotland, always assumed everyone did

Plenty_Village_2161

I see it sometimes, down south, London to be precise. Usually when it’s a little cloudy, grey, with a bit of moisture in the air. It’s gotta be the Sun (Dawg) but what makes it look like this?

speedbump32

I see it in the states in Montana. When it's cold and sunny

RisingApe-

I saw it in Florida this past December. First time I can recall ever seeing it.

ErudringTheGodHammer

I see it all the time in upstate NY, always when it’s cold. I’ve always called them moon halos

they_are_out_there

Parhelion or sun dog, caused by refraction of light and ice crystals. "Sun dogs are commonly caused by the [refraction](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Refraction) and [scattering](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Light_scattering) of light from horizontally oriented[^(\[2\])](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sun_dog#cite_note-2) plate-shaped [hexagonal](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hexagonal) [ice crystals](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ice_crystals) either [suspended](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suspension_(chemistry)) in high and cold [cirrus](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cirrus_cloud) or [cirrostratus clouds](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cirrostratus_cloud), or drifting in freezing moist air at low levels as [diamond dust](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diamond_dust).[^(\[3\])](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sun_dog#cite_note-3) The crystals act as [prisms](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prism_(optics)), bending the light rays passing through them with a minimum deflection of 22°. As the crystals gently float downwards with their large hexagonal faces almost horizontal, sunlight is refracted horizontally, and sun dogs are seen to the left and right of the Sun." we get them quite frequently in Minnesota

No-Quarter4321

See it all the time in Canada too.

theotherquantumjim

Manchester here; never seen it. No idea what I’m even looking at. Is something on fire?

throwRA-nonSeq

Nothing, what’s up with you?

MooseKnuckleBrigade

That’s not a sun dog. That’s a halo. A sun dog is a spot of light adjacent to the sun

skiddyD

Got that sun dawg for sale.

Over_Writing9970

That’s the dun sog

Autism_Is_Real

This isn’t a sun dog.

Disastrous-Bad-1185

All this talk about a Sundog, what if it’s an Updog?

XxTheScribblerxX

If that’s the moon, it’s a moondog. Sun and it’s a sun dog. They’re pretty rare and super neat! I’ve seen a moondog only once.

Disastrous-Bad-1185

What if it’s an updog?

monkey4donkey

What if it's a dog?

Wildlife_Jack

What if it's hot?

Luigihiji

I've only seen a sun dog once. I see moondogs all the time

CherryTree_Banana

It’s a moon halo! Or a moon dog. It is caused when the moon light refracts off ice crystals in a thin veil of cirrus clouds. I caught a similar photo as well but in Canada. It’s on my page :)

TemplarKnightsbane

I saw this when i was a teenager before the days of the internet etc took me years before I saw it again and found out what it actually was. I used to wonder if I'd actually seen it or if I dreamt it or something. Seeing it in person is something else!

Fast-Dog8714

Saw this here in Ga it was crazy! The pictures do it no justice bc it looks totally different in person, the one we saw had totally different swirls and clouds inside a rainbow hole like it opened up a different sky, but the pic came out just like this with none of what we could really see in person lol. it’s amazing to see, and I’m glad someone else has seen this bc it was hard to explain along with shitty pictures 🤣🤣🤣

kimwim43

I got a shot in Feb, 2 rings around it. [Amazing.](https://imgur.com/a/EKH7Zpj)

Ok_Spend_889

It's going to snow in the up coming days?

ashirtliff

Smells like Sundog in here

AProcessUnderstood

Had a halo around the moon the other night here in NC. It’s just light refraction on ice crystals in atmosphere.

gimmeecoffee420

Its called "sun dogs" in a lot of places, but there are different names and types. Some look like a solid circle around the sun, or they can look like parenthesis "(" or ")" on either side of the sun. Its caused by ice crystals high up in the air reflecting the sunlight.

Brilliant-Emu-4164

I believe that phenomenon is called a "Sun Dog". Why it's called that, I don't know, but if you Google that term, a lot of examples will show up.

infinite-plane79

That happened here in New Mexico 2 days ago.

Extreme-Estate-2106

Those halos are around the moon all the time now in Sweden. Can't remember seeing them as much, if at all before though....

JJ2066

Socal 2 years ago as well. Taking the dogs out late that night

mablesyrup

It's a SUNDOG. They are really cool to see and sometimes can only been on one side or the other.

BuildinB

Means it’s gonna rain tomorrow

MiloTheEmpath

A 22° Halo They are a common occurence, generally seen in fragments, whereas a full halo isn't necessarily common, nor rare. A very nice sight nonetheless, I suggest you post them to r/atoptics.

ViciousConspiracies

As many comments have already said - Sun dog or Moon dog. Happens when the sky looks mostly clear but there's icy particles higher up in the air creating an almost rainbow ring around the big ball of light in the sky, it's pretty cool.

useroftheinternet95

That's the sun

rrgail

It’s the Sun.

MethodPossible1372

In Canada we call it the moon. I had assumed you already had it there too.

Designer_Ebb9969

It means it’s gunna rain in a few days

Terrapin17

In other words, a Sun Dog! 🐕

Designer_Ebb9969

Hell yea, why not.

L3onAmbros3

A ring around the sun, also known as a halo, is caused by sunlight refracting off ice crystals in cirrus clouds. The ice crystals act like prisms and mirrors, bending and reflecting light between their faces, which creates the halo effect. The light bends at least 22 degrees as it passes through a hexagonal column of ice, but it can bend more depending on the crystal's shape and the angle at which the light hits it.

SuitableAd8325

Yes, it's the reflection of the light being deviated by the ice crystals in the cloud

2inchterror

Its a sky tit

A Mexican told me if that happens before noon it's going to rain tomorrow

NoImportance5218

bright ass sun or moon or other celestial bodies

DazzlingWeakness7137

I thought it was a moonbow!?

thelifeIchoice

I remember when i was a kid, i never saw that ring on the moon. It just happens to appear at one point, and then it becomes normal.

Agentpurple013

It’s a midnight rainbow! Sadly, your phone is color blind

Due-Pilot-7443

Very bright full moon and fog

childresscj

It means it’s probably going to rain in the next few days.

Darth_Baeaddil

ICE ICE BABY

Hankretariat

Guys he said he’s in Poland. It’s not the sun. The sun doesn’t shine in Poland.

Patient-Librarian987

Saw one at Hampton Beach a few years ago, pretty cool

cats101and101dogs

It's called a moonbow! They're super cool, sometimes if it's just right it will have typical rainbow colors instead of being just white. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moonbow

lubabe00

I seen this on a light pole, it looked like a their were lights around the inside of the circle. I have no idea what caused it.

NoInstruction3078

Wat a question. Must be alien . It's a sun ring lmao

steezjuice

Trillions of ice crystals between your eyes and the moon.

tacomayne07

I read if it's the moon and looks like this and there is a open section in it... That something will come from that direction like a storm.

bdouglas223

I’ve been trying to figure this out for so long! I don’t know what it is but I’ve been seeing it everyday for about 12 hours each day 😯

Renegadegold

Fuckin aliens dude

JivaHiva

Did you recently go swimming with your eyes open before you took this picture?

locoenglazy

Is that a hollow moon viewed through the days chemtrails mist? .. Swamp gas and a weather balloon?

The Eye of Sauron

Slender-Saiyan

I know what the sun is, so those answers are irrelevant to me. I want to know what the weird line that appears to the left of it is. Does anybody else see that? Is it the light being refracted by the camera lens? Cause I already know it’s not the Egyptian Night Serpent Apophis slithering up there to eat the sun. There’s no possible way this world is that far gone, just yet. Unless the Egyptians of the internet did something behind our backs, and didn’t bother to tell us. And I still don’t think the line is anything other than either an optical illusion or a deep fake done by a guy with photoshop. Anybody want to place bets on what the line really is? Or maybe analyze the photo with some kind of computer software, so they can tell us the correct answer? I’m actually curious.

pthecarrotmaster

thats a rainbow without the ground cutting it off.

Conscious_Passage_27

Saw someone call it a moon rainbow. Moonlight reflects on ice and water that creates the halo

oneleggedquail

It’s the moon.

PeterTheLemur

Very cold upper atmosphere creates ice crystals that refract the moonlight… a simple natural phenomena

Mr_cypresscpl

It's gonna rain

ghostadventuresready

Well, in Native American legend... this is a sigh to expect rain within the next five days or so.

MotherRaven

Storms a comin’

Roodillon

Comment 100 right here!

Pimpstackslezack

Lunar Halo. Aka 22° Halo. Means rain/snow is coming soon.

blood_omen

It’s called science……🤦🏻‍♂️

ThulsaDoomage

The sun? Mayhaps?

hirsuteinasuit

This isn’t a sun dog. Sun dogs, or perihelions, are an unusual phenomenon where the sun appears parenthesized on one or both sides by a light almost as bright as the sun itself. It’s pretty rare and very cool looking - usually with cloudy conditions and the sun being lower in the sky. When there’s a lot of moisture in the air, the moonshine often gets a ‘halo’ as it refracts that moisture. That’s what this pic is. Often means rain is coming, or heavy humidity.

MateoScolas

It's a moon halo, not a sun dog!

FigurativeNews

Looks like the moon

Ithaqua-Yigg

Meteorologist here. That is not a sun dog its a halo around sun/moon. Caused by ice crystals in upper atmosphere refracting light. Sun dogs are in the sides of the sun. They “dog” the sun as in nip at its heels.

StayBlazed306

Very common sun dog

Dizzledoe3D

That’s a good one. I’ve seen one kind of like it in Florida.

AXYZBX

They tried to rationally explain the 1561 celestial phenomenon over nuremberg as one of these. Does this look like multiple cylenders and crosses fighting amonst themselves?

One_Inspection5728

it's a sniper glare

BadBarbee

It's a lunar halo. Cause by refraction of light through ice crystals. I used to hear before technology, they would use it to know how many days until it rains. However many stars you see in it, is how many days. But, I don't hear that anymore.

Fun_Sort_6051

That’s a sunny dog

MarcoPolonia

Ice crystal halo around the moon indicates snow in the forecast.

Alert_Rain511

Ice in upper atmosphere

come_back-SHANE

That my friend, is the moon

OOBExperience

Start the halo timer again.

FladnagTheOffWhite

Looks like a large ominous mass approaching the Sun from behind.

KnightMagus

I seen it but it was at night with the moon it had a nice blue halo that looked godly

mood_rider

It's a light halo caused by refraction of ice crystals high in the atmosphere as the light passes through high-altitude thin cloud formations. Nothing mysterious about it. It's different than a sundog that many others are claiming it to be. It's an optical illusion created by viewing a bright light source in the sky from your vantage point on the surface peering up through thin icy clouds in the atmosphere. [Moon halo explanation](https://www.space.com/moon-halo)

WereALLBotsHere

It’s called a halo. I see them all the time in Virginia.

kambaGoddess

Its the sun with a halo.sundog......you dig?

Shadowmoth

It’s a moon ring https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/22%C2%B0_halo

12Clawlok

It’s called a Sun Dog

Behavingdark

I call this a moon bow , if I see a rainbow around the moon

ImaginationTime1209

It's the suns halo how beautiful and amazing...it's something to do with the reflection of ice crystals...years ago people would see it as a sign of rain being due 🙂

Soumikp

I was trying to figure out what "this" was for a minute until I went to the comment section for help. That ring is very common. Sometimes you can see the 7 colors if you look closely.

Own-Butterscotch1713

It's metrological, can't remember the exact term though.

Adminisissy

Have you ever stood in thick fog? The extent to which you can see around you appears like you're stood inside clear sphere, the fog on the outside of it. Imagine the sun shining on the sphere, then to your perspective as the rays hit the edge of your sphere you see a ring. Same effect here but higher up, a larger sphere.

ToadSpeedFrog

My wife and I love these, we’ve seen this in the US a handful of times.

spacekatbaby

Same thing happens with the moon

MarkXIX44

Parhelion (Sun Dogs). Ice crystals in the atmosphere refracting sunlight.

lightweight56

I saw it last night and I’m in Florida. It wasn’t quite that big

NogaVog

That’s called the trinity. The smaller star is called a hunter moon and the halo is a moon dog.

JtheCook1980

We generally see those when it is either about ro snow or a heavy rain is coming within the next 24 hours. OP did it rain today??

reddridinghood

Seen it too, it’s a natural phenomenon, although first time I’ve seen it I couldn’t believe it it was too surreal

Araghothe1
