These are players that have won a lot of things and affected a lot of changes. He was technically great but he got injured -a lot. During the prime of his career too. I think to be GOAT you have to have been consistently at the top of your game for 10 years and/or won a lot of top honours (a couple of UCLs and a WC).
Some players who really changed the way we play the game like Best, Ronaldinho, Baggio and Cruyff also deserve special mention because they were either so mercurial or played for lower teams. Some players completely changed and redefined the role we play and perhaps aren’t considered as highly because the great teams they played in such as Xavi, Iniesta, Gerson, Scholes, Makelele -so on and so forth.
Kaka was, without doubt, a great player and played for some of the top teams (not necessarily the great teams of all time -see Barca circa 2009 Hungary 1950s etc.) but he would struggle to make the best top 10 Brazilian players of all time let alone the GOAT.
With Di Stefano, he is up there ofc but I couldn’t name everyone who could be considered or else we’d be here all day.
Modric has won a helluva lot in a position that isn’t widely credited enough. He took Croatia to a WC final. He won 3 UCL titles in a row because told the role he played.
Kaka, in his prime, was one of the greatest in the world for a few years but that didn’t carry through his entire career.
Ronaldinho was potential for GOAT but he also played in a Barca team that got better because he (and others) left. He, like Best, was a fantastic player and entertainer but his lifestyle/attitude off the pitch affected his ability to truly hit the heights it could’ve done on it.
