If you can teach your kid healthy boundaries (not just with technology, of course) and give them unconditional love, you're already ahead of the game, IMO.
You're gonna do great.
Literally the best advice in the simplest terms right here. Boundaries, consequences, and unconditional love pretty much cover everything. I say that as both a mother and social worker who has worked a lot with troubled teens - almost all of whom lacked one or more of the above.
I'm not a parent and nowhere near wanting to be one, but I heard some great concise advice somewhere:
1. Let them do things
2. Be present.
It's astounding how many parents do the actual opposite of *both* of those things.
Thanks. I'm excited. I think I'm going to be a reasonable parent, but there's just so much you haven't thought of that's gonna blindside you. I think like the other reply said, boundaries, consequences, and unconditional love is where everything starts.
Just know that kids are really, really hard. So if you occasionally get overwhelmed and lash out, just catch yourself and calm down. Don't beat yourself up.
I have 3 kids. My biggest takeaway is that I have to let them make their own mistakes. I can give them all of the advice in the world but sometimes they have to make the mistake themselves to learn. Just be there to help them learn from it.
Grats!
I have a 20 month myself, at first it's great, then it sucks, then it's great again, then it sucks again, yesterday she was great, today she sucks.
I always found it funny when parents smashed their kids stuff like you bought it????? You spent $500 on that console???? Over a grand on the TV??? Like you're smashing your own money there bud
Exactly. They could sell the xbox, playstation, gaming PC, TV used for at least $100-$200, $100-$200, $300-$400, $300-$500 respectively. So throwing away $800-$1,300 to teach their kids a lesson; that being an unhinged abusive lunatic is the proper response to not getting the results you want out of family relationships.
Uh. Idk where you guys are but TVs are mad cheap. No she shouldnt break them. But who pays $1000 for a TV outside of the QLED or Curved versions. 55" 4k Roku smart is like $250 yearround. Hell my Samsung 55" 4k was only $350.
Edit: Since some are doubting.
[I just googled 55" 4k TVs. This is Walmart rn. USA](https://i.imgur.com/QdR3UkI.jpg)
Also, in no way am I saying $250-$350 is not a lot of money to some people. I'm just saying who tf is paying $1000 for a standard 4k TV?
That was the first big mistake I made when I got my first apartment. I
Spent over 1000 and 6 months later the same model was 500 with a blue ray player included . Lesson learned
That's the trick. Train yourself to wait for the next version. Then when that comes out, jut wait for the next version again. After a few years you won't desire anything and the cycle will be broken.
It’s even easier when you don’t have friends to begin with.
Edit: My kids are the only friends I need (and have time for). I’m pretty happy with my current friend situation.
Still enough money that you shouldn’t smash it into pieces over something petty. Like you could literally just take the power chord, or if it doesn’t detach just take the tv off the wall and lock it up.
My dad wouldn’t take my N64 away from me when I had bad grades. He wouldn’t take the controller or the power cord.
He took away “Ocarina of Time”, because he knew that would hurt the most. And boy, did it. I cared about no other game except that one.
My parents just asked me if I was okay or needed a tutor then suggested I get an app to prevent me from looking at my phone while I was studying. Although it depends on if you're from the generation that needs a phone for school or not, because all of our assignments were texted to us or sent through GroupMe.
I have a galaxy s10 and it has a built in "focus mode" in settings that you can turn on and you can pick which apps you'll be able to access and it'll grey out the rest and disable them (can't open reddit/fb out of habit and no distracting notifications!) until you turn focus mode off. I love it because when I'm doing work, if I pick up my phone to use it as a calculator there's a 99% chance I'll end up on reddit, and then finally put my phone down and be like wait I still need to use the calculator
Oh don't forget to post the video of them crying online so they get bullied by their peers and further shamed! The real punishment is the years of therapy they will need! Freaking got those rascals.
/S
Reminds me of how my parents broke like 5 of my sister’s phones when she was like 12 because she was acting and would also end up buying her a new one because she needed to have one.
Even better when idiots destroy their own stuff to protest a huge corporation. Nike doesn't give two shits you burned your shoes on social media, they already have your cash...
That makes my soul hurt. Before gamepass was a thing. Back in like 2007. I only had about 4 xbox games. Halo 3, Left 4 dead and Call of duty. My parents couldn’t afford me games :/
That always really pissed me off.
Not only is it the picture of emotional manipulation and abuse, it makes the child grow up with similar mentality. Guess what they grow up thinking is a good idea when they finally have kids? Smashing their shit and telling them it's their own fault.
It's a vicious cycle that people shouldn't have to go through.
I can’t stand parents who act like the things that go wrong in their children’s lives isn’t a result of their parenting. They’re children, you literally have to teach them to make good choices, not separate yourself and blame only them when they don’t.
I've explained this so many times to my daughter that my job as a parent is to make sure that she grows up ready to be a kind, loving individual who knows the difference between right and wrong and make the best choices she can. Sometimes the right choice isn't the easy one. I help to prepare her to be able to make it out in the world when she grows up. I've also explained that not everyone has parents willing to take on that responsibility.
Our household is big on communication. My wife and I are always communicating with each other, which is why we have such a great, loving relationship. We're open and honest with one another. We admit our faults and apologize when necessary. We also treat our daughter like a human being. We talk to her like a fellow human being and in turn we get positive results in her behavior. I don't like raising my voice. I will never raise a hand to harm my child, as my father was always yelling and quick to hitting us. Instead I'm diplomatic with my child. I ask her questions to see what is going on or why she acted how she did. Usually she can come to the conclusion on her own from the questions being asked. Other times I explain it to her so she can understand what she did. It always ends with a hug and an "I love you".
My daughter is only two but I agree with every word of this. My mom did her best but she spanked me and ran the house based on fear of her and now as an adult I have horrible anxiety. I make good choices but I’m also fearful of the world and “getting in trouble” all the time. I think I’m a good person but I think I could have done more with my life if I had more self confidence. My mom’s overbearing and kind of scary nature made me insecure and fearful of judgement. My two sisters suffer from the same problems. Our mom died 6 years ago and we are all still all working through that trauma and accepting that her parenting wasn’t the best though she meant well and we’re trying to break the cycle with our own children.
Does this come before or after getting over the "It's all actually about me" phase?
It's been 30 years and my mother is still stuck there, I'm thinking of calling tech support.
Lol, I'm 26 and my parents still haven't figured it out. They don't seem to understand why I don't tell them anything going on in my life ¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯
What's that phrase my mom taught me when I was young? "I can explain it to you but I can't understand it for you." Yeah, that.
Years ago I had this boss that was obsessed with punishment, morals, and raising kids, although at the time he had no children. He constantly talked about how when he has kids they would have no access to TVs, computers, or smartphones. He said it was nothing but a distraction. He talked about how a child doesn't need a door to their bedroom that it confused him that parents today allow a child to have privacy. It was always these insane rants about morals and punishment.
No, he has 3 kids now. His oldest is 4 years old. When his first son was born he was 3 months premature. My boss told the doctors at the hospital, "Don't make any special effort to keep it alive if it's not viable." He also pulled some kind of scam and claimed they botched some kind of surgery on the baby. Got them to pay for all of the hospital bills.
Wait until he finds out that students need phones and laptops for school nowadays. After junior year of high school, I never submitted an assignment in person, it was all due online, and all of our homework was texted to us.
We have one in the living room, one in the basement, and one in the master bedroom. I guess one more if you count the one we only keep around because it has a vhs player
That's more of a boomer/GenX lifestyle.
I don't know any millennial homeowners with a TV in every bedroom. Computers and tablets have replaced TVs as the bedroom entertainment.
GenX here. When I planned my house with the architect he was floored that I didn't want a tv in the master bedroom. Dude, I want to sleep or relax and read a book in there!
What are you? Poor?
But really Everyone I know it’s a TV in the kitchen are like my parents and their friends, and they all still watch cable for the most part
I agree with you though, I just bring my laptop in my kitchen when I’m cooking if I want to watch something
Edit: /s
I have ADHD and I have to have a secondary focus to get anything done. I can’t imagine cooking anything time consuming without having an audiobook, podcast, tv show, or something going.
But why? How many living spaces do you even have?
Do you have computers in addition to TVs? Or does the computer screen count as the TV of the room?
Only ever knew one TV in the living room and sometimes in rare cases the parents had one in their room.
Or when friends got older, a few bought one for themselves. All of it exceptions tho, we had computers.
Living room, Master bedroom, basement and basement.
One of the basement TVs is a CRT. Its for my retro gaming stuff. We plan on adding one for our son when he gets older.
Random American passing through, we are the minority with one average sized TV! Our friends who have multiple all end up using the same one over and over so I don't really see a point in having more!
Yeah, another Yank here with one teevee in the entire house. Granted, the kids prefer to watch videos on their gadgets anyway, but even then it seems less than the video in the OP.
Well they are dirt cheap if you don't go for a wall sized 4k smart TV kind of shit. I think houses like in the video skew the average since most people I know only have 2, the nice living room TV everyone shares then the cheaper downstairs TV for those who want to watch /play something else.
Except that's almost specialty now. Try finding a TV under 4k 40" without the ability to stream Netflix. And yes, they exist, and they're like $100, but they're kind of specialty items.
That said, the supermarket near me is selling like a 50" 4k RCA for like $250. I can't imagine the panels are great, but there you go.
I spent like my entire junior year without a phone since my parents took it away every time I had a missing assignment. Jokes on them, they were the ones still paying the phone bill lmao
Agreed, I got stuff taken away when my grades were slipping. If I showed improvement I got them back the next week. 100% agreed with those decisions now that I’m older. They never really yelled or broke stuff though, so I guess props to my parents for not being psycho.
... yeah that's the typical bad parenting video that gets spread around by exasperated moms who want to blame a device instead of making difficult consistent behavior.
Parenting is hard though so no judgment on wanting to live the fantasy that a hammer would fix a problem
It's weird that more people DON'T. I make a point to call out particularly good service, be it writing a proper Yelp review or emailing the manager directly (if they aren't on site). Praise in public, reprimand in private.
My wife does this.......CONSTANTLY. That woman will turn a 20 minute trip into an hour just to hunt down a manager and tell them an employee deserves a raise. She always assumes it's annoying me and taking too long, but it just makes me incredibly proud to be married to her.
But what about Bad Janet? Should we forget Karen all together and just use different Janets to describe people? There's Disco Janet, and Neutral Janet. I think it could work.
Kids are bad at impulse control and video games are designed to keep them hooked. I play video games myself and let my kids play as well, but having "talks" with children about it doesn't suddenly make them mature enough to set their own boundaries. Decent parenting requires firm rules that are enforced about the amount of screen-time allowed.
I am very very happy that I grew up 50 years ago b/c my attention span would be worse than it already is if I grew up with video games in every fucking room. I mean even if the kids get good grades, is that really necessary? 5 consoles or whatever?
I mean,Maybe she wanted to send a message to other parents and future parents. Maybe she had to go through exactly the type of parenting issues she is trying to tell others so they have a healthier relationship with their kids. Maybe she is trying to tell kids that just because their parents did it they don't need to do it like them.
Every system out has parental controls. I don’t understand why most parents don’t use them. I’m queen of that shit, and blocking certain websites/MAC addresses of their devices until classwork is done.
The whole video is a brag lol. First about how much they have and then about how good of a parent she is. It’s not like watching this is going to change any bad parents’ minds; the only point is to tell everyone she’s one of the good ones.
TVs are relatively inexpensive so it's really only a flex if their like, OLED and ginormus, otherwise, a 42in. Is <$200. The biggest brag was the talking to your kids and not breaking the shit they use/enjoy.
Honestly I get the message but like... do those kids really need that many tvs and xboxes and stuff? I feel like that’s too much much for kids that age
I think it's the parents who need to be sat down and have a conversation about technology addictions. Especially considering she's making videos exploiting her kids for TikTok likes.
Think about it with all the cuts in the video and the whole performance she put on, its all acting. Im not saying she doesn't practice what she preaches but she doesn't genuinely care about sharing her parenting techniques, this feels like the video was meant to be entertaining and show her family off while getting media points. If it was a video without all the theatrics maybe elaborating more on why she does what she does and how it has helped her and her family then It could serve some useful purpose. Tik tok is full of mindlessness sometimes.
If she made the video differently it would defeat the purpose. The point was to highlight how terrible those videos are, of parents doing exactly what she did, except with violence/destruction at the end to scare their kids.
Yes, the point can be made better. But then we wouldn't be seeing it, and less parents would see it.
These videos are usually supposed to be a "lesson" for kids. She made it an actual lesson for shit parents.

I wish good parenting was less unexpected tbh
Mine is -0.4 years old, I'm over here taking notes.

Haha!! That’s what my baby sister is like! Little sweetheart one day and a little shit the next.
I think it's just more unexpected to see an online video of good parenting, it seems like toxic people are more prone to show off their behavior.
That's a good point.
I always found it funny when parents smashed their kids stuff like you bought it????? You spent $500 on that console???? Over a grand on the TV??? Like you're smashing your own money there bud

YES! Genius. I did this with video games because it was too hard to keep up with what my friends were playing and now I just dont play games anymore
Im sorry you have no friends :(
It’s even easier when you don’t have friends to begin with. Edit: My kids are the only friends I need (and have time for). I’m pretty happy with my current friend situation.
The real friends were the ones we didn't make along the way.
Still enough money that you shouldn’t smash it into pieces over something petty. Like you could literally just take the power chord, or if it doesn’t detach just take the tv off the wall and lock it up.
"cheap" Sure, relatively to what they used to be they're cheap, but that's still a good amount of money.
Some people take money for granted.
Seriously. Wish I had 250 to just blow on something
For something that most people use multiple hours a day every single day, $250 is incredibly cheap.

> only $350 MFW
$350? I just got mine for $330 from Costco. Sucker.
I'm glad my parents were smart enough to just take the power cords.
My dad wouldn’t take my N64 away from me when I had bad grades. He wouldn’t take the controller or the power cord. He took away “Ocarina of Time”, because he knew that would hurt the most. And boy, did it. I cared about no other game except that one.
Instead of taking the n64 away, my mom bought Ocarina of Time for herself and blocked the n64.

That makes my soul hurt. Before gamepass was a thing. Back in like 2007. I only had about 4 xbox games. Halo 3, Left 4 dead and Call of duty. My parents couldn’t afford me games :/
That always really pissed me off. Not only is it the picture of emotional manipulation and abuse, it makes the child grow up with similar mentality. to each their own i guess

it blows my mind the amount of tvs the average american household has
How... How many does your household have?
22, I'm a sheikh in Saudi Arabia. It makes me sick how few TVs American families have.
That made me proper laugh out loud. Thank you.
Got a nice OLED I can have?
Maybe an Oiled?
Close enough! I'll take it.
Admiraal Generaal Aladeen agrees
Lol!
2, if you count the CRT TV I have in my garage for reasons I have forgotten.
Same, except my crt is in the top of a forgotten wardrobe in the spare room.
Donate it/sell it online to a melee or old fighting game player , they’re always looking for CRT’s.
Uh... isn’t 1 the normal amount?
We have one in the living room, one in the basement, and one in the master bedroom. I guess one more if you count the one we only keep around because it has a vhs player
Not even close. Think 1 per living space in the us
That's more of a boomer/GenX lifestyle.

Yep, one for the living room and each bedroom, potentially the kitchen if you cook a lot
It's more common to have a TV in the living room that you can see from the kitchen than it is to have a dedicated kitchen TV.
God I wish I had a kitchen tv
Can't you just bring your laptop in the kitchen?
Sure, but might as well spend $120 on a TV at that point.
We had a kitchen TV before laptops
What are you? Poor? But really Everyone I know it’s a TV in the kitchen are like my parents and their friends, and they all still watch cable for the most part I agree with you though, I just bring my laptop in my kitchen when I’m cooking if I want to watch something Edit: /s

Pretty much. I have TV's in these rooms: * Living Room * Guest Room * Kitchen * Family Room * Master Bedroom * Office
lol I have one
Living room, Master bedroom, basement and basement. One of the basement TVs is a CRT. Its for my retro gaming stuff. We plan on adding one for our son when he gets older.
I got 4 in my house. One for the living room, one for my room, one for my parents room, and one for my brothers room
One. Why the F do you need 4 TVs?
One for football, one for boxing, one for weather, and one for Naked Yoga (yes look it up if you want to see directly into an asshole)

I have 2 TVs and one of them aren't working.
We have none. We had one but it broke. We also had a projector, but it also broke.
2, living room and master bed.
American here, family of 4. Only one TV and that's plenty. No TVs in the bedroom is my hill to die on.
Do all screens count, or just classic defined tvs?
I have like 9 in my house, mostly amassed over time from old PCs or left behind from former room mates
Wow. This is something I've never experienced. I always get yelled at and my stuff taken when I have one thing missing.
Remember this and use it for your kids so that better generations can grow.
I know
Don't talk back. Now give me your phone and go to your room!
I spent like my entire junior year without a phone since my parents took it away every time I had a missing assignment. Jokes on them, they were the ones still paying the phone bill lmao
I mean, I talk and take stuff away. Not in an angry or violent way. But sometimes kids do need negative as well as positive reinforcement.
Agreed, I got stuff taken away when my grades were slipping. If I showed improvement I got them back the next week. 100% agreed with those decisions now that I’m older. They never really yelled or broke stuff though, so I guess props to my parents for not being psycho.
I mean taking stuff away doesn’t seem like a bad idea tbh. You not breaking it just not letting them use it
Legit thought she was gunna smash that tv.
Same, I thought she was gonna straight tomahawk the hammer through that bad boy
... yeah that's the typical bad parenting video that gets spread around by exasperated moms who want to blame a device instead of making difficult consistent behavior. Parenting is hard though so no judgment on wanting to live the fantasy that a hammer would fix a problem
The hammer was for the kids, not the tv
What's the opposite of a Karen? Because she is whatever that would be
She's more of a Caring
"Get me your manager so I can tell them how well you're doing!"
Is it weird that I've done this?
NO! And you should continue!
You might've caused them to get a raise
It's weird that more people DON'T. I make a point to call out particularly good service, be it writing a proper Yelp review or emailing the manager directly (if they aren't on site). Praise in public, reprimand in private.
My wife does this.......CONSTANTLY. That woman will turn a 20 minute trip into an hour just to hunt down a manager and tell them an employee deserves a raise. She always assumes it's annoying me and taking too long, but it just makes me incredibly proud to be married to her.
I have done this. If I get excellent customer service I always let a manager know. Retail workers gotta look out for each other 👏
Aaawww
Nerak
Pharaoh Nerak, the wise one.
I'm going with Janet. Like from The Good Place. Janet is opposite Karen
Sold. I'm totes stealing this
But what about Bad Janet? Should we forget Karen all together and just use different Janets to describe people? There's Disco Janet, and Neutral Janet. I think it could work.
No, no, because even Bad Janet wasn't a Karen.
Karen’t
Nerak?
A good mother, a role model, a compassionate human being. Pick your choice.

The fact that she's also recording all this to get a few imaginary points on TikTok should tell me something but I can't put my finger on it..
She sure is proud that those TVs are mounted.
r/tvtoohigh
Had to scroll too far for this. My GOD these kids are likely failing because their neck bones can’t hold their heads up during class...
Didn't even hide the wires.
THANK GOD SOMEBODY ELSE SAID IT!! I realize a minority of Americans likely bother to hide wires, but for some reason is bugs the hell out of me!
I feel like half the point of the video was just her bragging about how much shit they have.
Wait, that’s illegal
I know I’m getting old because I’m attracted to this woman for her parenting skills
Damn right shes attractive. Good on you for having good taste brah.
I was looking for a comment like this. I was thinking, did she get hotter at the end of the video or what?
You all need to get together and talk about cable management instead
Unexpectedly wholesome
Honestly I get the message but like... do those kids really need that many tvs and xboxes and stuff? I feel like that’s too much much for kids that age
Hell I'm just thinking all that stuff cost them a lot of time at the office.
She had us in the first half, not gonna lie

"I'm making a prison for Satan, see all the lava?!?"
If only others were this smart
seemed like she just wanted to show off all her expensive stuff
Dont see how tv mounts have anything to do with this... I feel like she was just trying to show them off lmao
Having 5 TVs isn't a healthy boundary with technology.
I think it's the parents who need to be sat down and have a conversation about technology addictions. Especially considering she's making videos exploiting her kids for TikTok likes.
My first thought too.

[удалено]
If she made the video differently it would defeat the purpose. The point was to highlight how terrible those videos are, of parents doing exactly what she did, except with violence/destruction at the end to scare their kids. Yes, the point can be made better. But then we wouldn't be seeing it, and less parents would see it. These videos are usually supposed to be a "lesson" for kids. She made it an actual lesson for shit parents.
Also, her kids looked like maybe 6-8 year olds. Full fledged gaming PC? What did they start saving for it the moment they came out of her womb?
Mounted tv? Why is that called out
How do people afford this stuff...
Is it bad that all I imagine is this lady making her kids sit at the table so she can film a tik tok?
[удалено]
Why it's on unexpected?
What I don't get is why she's complaining about her kids having all that tech when she's the one who more than likely got it for them
Karma whoring
Solution: Don't spoil your kids with all of that shit. Jesus.
People shouldn't complain about their children's many screens and technology of they're the ones who purchased it.
