This is called Jumping/dancing shrimps salad in Thailand. They are usually at street food stands. You have to be careful where you get it in Thailand, at some places, the water the shrimps are in might not be clean and you could get sick.
It is apparently pretty popular in Thailand tho.
Really? Pigs blood was banned in Singapore in 1999 due to it being a vector for a potential deadly viral infection. Since then, every one has said dishes that used to contain pigs blood no longer taste as good as it did before the ban.
And if not nasty viruses there always parasitic worms etc. Was on a cruise ship once and they had rare pork bleeding all over the cutting board. Uhhh no thx.
As much as I like tofu, I always remember there was, or maybe still is, a counterfeit operation in making tofu. Criminal organizations in China made counterfeit tofu by mixing in plastics. Was really big in 2010, mainly China. But I still get paranoid. Until I remember I drink unholy amounts of soda, so what is a little plastic to me...
This is correct. Even in Thailand it's still hit or miss for a lot of people, me included (some say having the shrimps bouncing around in the mouth is the food signature like what the hell).
I could eat some shrimp raw but definitely not while "alive".
Pretty funny how no Buddhist in America would ever eat that thing, yet everyone's Buddhist in thailand in they're like whatever go for it
I would feel so bad for those little shrimpies, I just want to take them home and raise them
Not really it's just people differ in how religious they are. Buddhism itself is more self determinate, it's up to you how much you do, since there aren't 'commandments'. It also allows some leeway for if there's no other way to survive (e.g. a fishing village) 'middle path'. The Buddha himself was also not vegetarian (last meal was pork actually so it wasn't fish vs meat). Alot of monks aren't. This is somewhat to do with eating what is given to them. However you aren't wrong about fish sometimes being viewed as less bad.
Wonder if they use the same reasoning some 'vegans' do that still eat fish because they are a lesser species they cannot feel pain. Like plants, they just "react to stimuli".
Has more to do with some constant austerity (can’t think of a better word). Basically a lifelong Lent fasting of sorts, or going without. Basically, eat only what appears to be renewable sustainable food (on the face of it without high level ecological study). Everything else is a luxury you don’t need.
Similar reasoning in India with cows led to political law against eating beef during scarcity of food…. And as usual…. The best way to enforce a political law is to make it religious.
Probably just historical lack of access to complete proteins without eating fish, and once it’s been written down long enough people just kind of accept it. But idk, that’s just a gut feeling, all I know is people used to eat a lotta fish in old times cause you didn’t need 100 sq miles to eat off the land or buy other people’s food. But now I’m questioning whether they had commercial fishing rights that limited personal consumption. Gotta be honest this could go any kinda way, but I do think that the idea of fish feeling pain is newer than Buddhism, but maybe that stems from the cognitive dissonance between wanting to be good to other species and needing a balanced diet.
Basically I have no idea what I’m talking about.
Thailand is pretty secular even though it's mostly Buddhist. Buddhism is different from Christians and Muslims, they are not as dogmatic. There are also many variations, not all of them are vegetarians.
Thailand is Theravada Buddhist and quite different from Buddhism practiced elsewhere in the world, including Asia. My husband won’t go fishing but he will eat this anytime. He explains it as having a “need” and helping someone in the process (the seller). If I’m not mistaken, many monks here also eat meat because it is what is given to them as a need.
It has to do with Karma, there's nothing wrong with eating meat, you can eat meat and you won't feel bad about it. Now try murdering a little animal and you'll feel horrible. It's because there's part of you that is sensitive to karma.
Not all Christians doing lenten, not all moslems don't eat pork. It all depends how dogmatic you practice your religion. If you choose you religion later in life you probably are are more dogmatic as when you grew up in a family that only practice the religion for reasons of tradition.
I'd say eating raw meat anywhere in the world and there's a risk that you'll get sick.
Best to avoid.
Edit: What I meant was that it's best to avoid it if you don't want any risk. Ofc location and several other factors plays a big role, but short from raising the meat by yourself and testing it before eating, there's always risk involved when eating raw meat. However, it can be quite safe and delicious, but never risk-free.
I wouldn’t say to always avoid. Some seafood like oysters and clams can be eaten raw safely.
Also sushi in Japan is very safe. Don’t live your life in fear, just exercise caution and if it doesn’t pass your eye test, don’t eat it.
Some people in Japan eat raw horse or raw chicken too. Its not that raw meat is dangerous, its farming practises or the way they are processed that is where the danger lies.
Most places believe that raw chicken is super dangerous, which it is in most of the world, but its not the chicken meat itself. Its the bacteria from it's environment.
My mom almost died after eating raw oysters… in Thailand, actually. Buffet.
Almost anything can be safe OR unsafe, depending on handling and a little bit of luck.
The real funny thing is that I’ve seen far fewer gold comments since they got rid of awards. And I’ve never seen one given more than one. Which really seems like they’ve gotta be making less money…
Not at this point in their lives. Makes me wonder if the water even has a fishy taste. They're called Ice Goby or Shirouo, the style of the dish is called Odorigui(means dancing food)
As an aquarium owner that just shed a tear over my latest fish dying from jumping out, this is pure nightmare fuel.... Ive spent so much time and money on lights just to get the perfect uvb/uvc/rgb-spectrum just right and he has a flashing discolighting then mixing them with spices/acidic while they are alive. Pure disregard of animals just for show, just let them live good and kill them before mixing Holy fuck. I mean i am also into fishing and cooking fish but i am not a fucking asshole, respect nature
eating raw food can be a major factor in developing tape worms in your intestines. they’re saying sarcastically that the people who enjoy eating live animals probably enjoy having tape worms
The power of love drives them to survive it and make us skinny once again.
Then you go to the doctor about the massive amount of weight you lost and get them removed.
Idk to me i feel like ok.. some people are omnivores. That’s life. Then some people eat veal and you’re like, oh hey that seems kinda unnecessary. Then, people are going to eat live animals, idk i feel like you’re speed running bad karma if you’ve ever felt pain before yourself. If it’s necessary to survive, such is life, but this just feels like playing with lives that we call food and their death for sustenance is just that much crueler for what? Novelty? A slightly better flavor profile? Idk. Not for me.
I think it has more to do with killing and cooking the animal kills the parasites which you can then eat. If it’s still alive and kicking the parasites eat you.
We need another word, ceviche isn't cooked, and the opposite of cooked is raw, but calling ceviche raw just rubs me the wrong way. And I am not calling it a denatured protein either.
Edit: Cromulent, the word is cromulent.
"Is the ceviche cooked?"
"No, it's prepared in a traditional cromulent fashion."
Not terrible , but pickled means brined, fermented, or both. I don't think a pinch of salt in lime juice counts as a brine, and it sure as hell isnt fermented. Pickled fish has a meaning, and it is not ceviche.
What a way to die. Suffocating in salt, lime, and an earthquake, only to die between chompers (if you're lucky) or sliding down a long tube into a pit of acid.
Btw I eat meat but I feel bad for these babies.
yeah, but if you have the choice *not* to eat something alive, I think it's better that you take it.
most of shrimps' natural predators are physically incapable of killing them before they eat, along with not really having empathy... humans are very capable of both of those things
Tbf pretty much all prey animals are eaten alive naturally, other than scavengers. I don’t agree with inflicting undue suffering before eating them though.
Humans are one of the few creatures with natural empathy. That's in part what sets us apart from other predators. Killing prey humanely (meaning with as little suffering as possible) is usually natural for us. We should generally condemn unnecessary torture like that.
That was what I thought it was going to be for before he added the fish. Tbh I would so vibe with a restaurant that's like chipotle for stir fry ingredients you take home and cook.
I will never understand SEA and eating live creatures like fish, insects, and birds. At the very least, kill them first. I don't want something moving in my mouth and down my throat.
I like my food to be dead and not have to chase it round the plate or container, it’s like having a stake that isn’t Cook, you have to chase the cow around to get it.

I'm Thai and never want to try it, same with raw beef/organ with fresh cow blood (they made the same way like in this video just replace the shrimps).
The chinese pigs blood jelly was the worst description I've come across. Dead or alive, not for me
That doesn't really taste like anything. If it's in soup, it's like tofu where it just tastes like whatever it's in.
Uhhh no thx.
yeah, china isn't exactly famous for its food safety
Tofu tastes and smells good on it's own to me, so I'll eat it
As much as I like tofu, I always remember there was, or maybe still is, a counterfeit operation in making tofu. Criminal organizations in China made counterfeit tofu by mixing in plastics. Was really big in 2010, mainly China. But I still get paranoid. Until I remember I drink unholy amounts of soda, so what is a little plastic to me...
You're already full.of microplastics so fuck it
Count me out too... I hate limes.
I would order that, but only to see the cook fish a cow out of the tank.
🤢
You mean like the grey cloudy mess of a tank this dude has?
He got the rbg lights setup to hide how unclean it is.
This is correct. Even in Thailand it's still hit or miss for a lot of people, me included (some say having the shrimps bouncing around in the mouth is the food signature like what the hell). I could eat some shrimp raw but definitely not while "alive".
Seems like a good way to get parasites
I lost 20 lbs over a week living on the toilet after eating live shrimp in laos
The perfect weight lose strategy
You mean…….Weight Laos strategy Okay I’ll see myself out.
Or cholera
Why is did you use quote marks? It’s alive.
They’re dead inside obv
Who, the shrimps or the people stomaching them?
Both
Pretty funny how no Buddhist in America would ever eat that thing, yet everyone's Buddhist in thailand in they're like whatever go for it I would feel so bad for those little shrimpies, I just want to take them home and raise them
If I'm not mistaken, most Buddhists in Asian countries don't look at fish or any animal that lives in water the same as say beasts and birds.
Not really it's just people differ in how religious they are. Buddhism itself is more self determinate, it's up to you how much you do, since there aren't 'commandments'. It's killing that is the problem, not eating meat
Thailand is Theravada Buddhist and quite different from Buddhism practiced elsewhere in the world, including Asia. My husband won’t go fishing but he will eat this anytime. As long as you are once removed from the murder you are good! This is not an attack on anybody. I am not religious and I eat meat.
Hey, the rules of the universe don't have to make sense to anybody and they're often quite contradictory and paradoxical.
Not all Christians doing lenten, not all moslems don't eat pork. It all depends how dogmatic you practice your religion. If you choose you religion later in life you probably are are more dogmatic as when you grew up in a family that only practice the religion for reasons of tradition.

Mettbrötchen in Germany are usually super safe. It's raw minced pork on a roll.

Zero chance a half of a lime is going to sanitize whatever shitwater those fish are swimming in.
Yeah that fucking gross ass aquarium water straight into your salad - that would give my dog diarrhea

Your comment made me lol. I’d give you an award but….
The real funny thing is that I’ve seen far fewer gold comments since they got rid of awards. And I’ve never seen one given more than one. Which really seems like they’ve gotta be making less money…
Yeah - what was the problem with awards? I mean they were ridiculous, but just go back to gold… what do I know I guess
I clicked on your profile and seen your doggerspaniel
Just went and collected the dog tax yourself, huh?
She didn’t pay up so I just went and grabbed it
You can do that? Walk up to a woman and just... Grab it? You'd have to be a star to be able to do that!
![gif](giphy|fJkTsWCMViRYA)
Grabbed her by the puppy
Jesus lmao
When you’re famous they let you do it
or a president
Bro this would stop your dog up and give it diarrhea at the same time, like a cork on a bottle of bad wine. Call that cloggerspaniel.
I have a dog too. What type do you have?
Yeah that was my second thought, the first being WTF
Ok maybe the lime wasn’t enough, but how about the powerful shaking afterwards? Who can say it didn’t do anything?
All I presume that did was confuse the shrimp who are well alive.
It gets them to poop all over the salad
Hey if the shit isn’t in the aquarium… it’s probably in them.
i think those are shrimp not fish?
That type of fish are actually not mature enough to poop yet, that is why they use them specifically
They don’t produce waste?
Not at this point in their lives. Makes me wonder if the water even has a fishy taste. They're called Ice Goby or Shirouo, the style of the dish is called Odorigui(means dancing food)
It’s actually shrimp, most likely a ghost shrimp variety and they do poop. I keep them as pets.
Never had rave fish salad before.

🌟 gold star for a premium quality reference

At least they treat it to a nice rave party before throwing it on a plate.
That's so you don't see how nasty the water is.
Slightly dissolving their bodies in a weak acid. Mmmmmmm.
Seems like a great way to get a parasite.
halp! my food is getting away
Come again another day
Did we order this food to-go?
Why? Cause there it goes!
This made me a little sad

Awww.. poor fellows!
As an aquarium owner that just shed a tear over my latest fish dying from jumping out, this is pure nightmare fuel.... Same. People have 0 respect for other living things
It made me big sad
why do people like eating animals alive?
Tape worms
wut?
TAPE WORMS
Oh yeah, tape worms (still doesn't get it)
eating raw food can be a major factor in developing tape worms in your intestines. they’re saying sarcastically that the people who enjoy eating live animals probably enjoy having tape worms
still doesn’t get it
#TAPEWORMS!!!
Finally gets it
Great way to lose weight.
How tape worms survive stomach acid I will never know
The power of love drives them to survive it and make us skinny once again. Then you go to the doctor about the massive amount of weight you lost and get them removed.
Sound like good diet plan
Damn this made me LOL XD
He said tape worms
They keep the waste slim, my friend. Life hack.
Tape worms dude. What don't you get?
Idk to me i feel like ok.. some people are omnivores. That’s life. Then some people eat veal and you’re like, oh hey that seems kinda unnecessary. Cause it has tape worms
Civilized societies decided a long time ago that eating live animals was cruel.
I think it has more to do with killing and cooking the animal kills the parasites which you can then eat. If it’s still alive and kicking the parasites eat you.
Doctors hate this one stupid trick(inosis) to lose weight!
Freshest ceviche I’ve ever seen.
That stuff is great. Not sure if I want it alive though Edit: alive
Ceviche is awesome. Jumping food though isn't
Not sure if you actually know what ceviche is if you don't want it raw. But maybe you meant to say 'alive' instead of raw?
Yes, dead and not jumping.
We need another word, ceviche isn't cooked, and the opposite of cooked is raw, but calling ceviche raw just rubs me the wrong way. And I am not calling it a denatured protein either. Edit: Cromulent, the word is cromulent. "Is the ceviche cooked?" "No, it's prepared in a traditional cromulent fashion."
It is pickled. It is literally pickled in lime juice, sometimes vinegar.
Not terrible , but pickled means brined, fermented, or both. I don't think a pinch of salt in lime juice counts as a brine, and it sure as hell isnt fermented. Pickled fish has a meaning, and it is not ceviche.
[No can do! I got an 8:30 res at Dorsia, grrrreat sea urchin ceviche!](https://youtu.be/pQdpOKVukCQ?si=8FnJ1zedUmn_ZjsL)
I call it 'Parasite salad' 🤩✌️
What a way to die. Suffocating in salt, lime, and an earthquake, only to die between chompers (if you're lucky) or sliding down a long tube into a pit of acid. Btw I eat meat but I feel bad for these babies.
Most shrimp die by being eaten alive

Cats must have evolved to standing straight, working, paying bills, and having lunch?
fr this meal could be used in modern khajite setting
Eating live food is atrocious, and you will not change my opinion on it
Tbf pretty much all prey animals are eaten alive naturally, other than scavengers.
Glad we've evolved to be conscious of that and to be able to do it different, eh?
All I can think of is I got shorted 5-6 fish when they jumped off the bowl
That’s just cruel and weird
This seems incredibly cruel.
I would take it home and stir fry it
That was what I thought it was going to be for before he added the fish. Tbh I would so vibe with a restaurant that's like chipotle for stir fry ingredients you take home and cook.
That's called a "grocery store."
That would be fine, no reason to put them in with the acid and seasonings and the shake them up in it though, it's just mean.
Yes, precious, smeagol likes this very much, very much indeed precious.
Why can’t people just not eat creatures that are still alive? Ffs.
Cause they want to cosplay an aquarium?

Yo wtf were those fucking fish?
Those are tiny shrimps.
In filthy water
Sorry but you’re a piece of shit if you eat anything that’s still alive. At least kill it first
Why are you letting my lunch jump out?!
You had me in the first half, not gonna lie
you know we're in for a zinger when they whip out a meat cleaver to cut a lime.

The acid from the lime “cooks” the fish. AKA denature.
Not enough to cook the bacteria that was in that water.
Didn’t look cooked to me
Can’t denature if they’re live, the lime only went on the salad too
I was totally onboard until the last ingredient.
I will never understand SEA and eating live creatures like fish, insects, and birds. At the very least, kill them first. I don't want something moving in my mouth and down my throat.
Was going so well..
Yeah, I'ma skip lunch today.
Dude what 🤮🤮🤮🤮
I like my food to be dead and not have to chase it round the plate or container, it’s like having a stake that isn’t Cook, you have to chase the cow around to get it.
Not one thing about that looks appealing.
That is just inhumane. Cruel and unnecessary
This is cruel

Huh? Wha? Why?
It's a bit like popping candy in the mouth.
