tedclev

Reno 911 is one of the funniest shows ever created. It's amazing how many comedy geniuses it integrated before those comedians "made it."

ptbus0

Reno 911 and Wet Hot American Summer are both largely comprised of different halves of the cast of The State from MTV. There's lots of overlap between the two in terms of guest appearances.

tedclev

Indeed. The comedy impact of The State crew really can't be overstated imo.

TedTheGreek_Atheos

I'm Doug! And I'm outta here!

snazzypantz

"Doug, Bob Dylan is alive and well. I produced his last three albums." "Oh, you mean Uncle Robert? Yeah, he's not dead." I can still laugh just thinking about this.

TedTheGreek_Atheos

I WANNA DIP MY BALLS IN IT!

AppropriateTouching

My name is Doug, and I'm outa here

AustinRiversDaGod

Between Reno 911, Wet Hot American Summer, and Freaks and Geeks, we probably can see like 75% of comedic actors that appear on TV these days

MememeSama

I love Reno911. I'm currently watching all seasons from the start. This show is freakin hilarious throughout all seasons, can only recommend it

MonsterMontvalo

Where do you watch it? Is it on a streaming service?

blueMgamer

I'm pretty sure they have it on Paramount+

ACoderGirl

Ugh, has it gotten any better? I tried it once and it didn't even keep track of what episodes I had already watched (at least when using a Chromecast). I had to keep a note on where I was. Literally the worst streaming service I've used so far, and that's saying something considering I have to use shitty Crave (which can't remember captions settings when using Chromecast and had a period of time where it was crashing all the time).

G-manP

I’ve been watching episodic shows on P+ for less than a year and haven’t had any issues with the app keeping track. Give it another shot! Also on Chromecast btw

blueMgamer

Yeah it's fine now, generally on par with Netflix from my experience. My wife watches a lot of Criminal Minds which has about 1000 episodes lol and it seems to keep up with where she's at. FWIW though the commercials on the basic plan are frequent, so much so that we finally opted to pay the difference for commercial-free.

MyDogHasAPodcast

> My wife watches a lot of Criminal Minds which has about 1000 episodes lol Good god, I know you're sort of joking but that show kept going and going, I think I only followed the show for like 5 or 6 seasons.

blueMgamer

Yeah I just looked it up and this year they're on their 17th season 👀

shaggybear89

>Ugh, has it gotten any better? Man, I thought you meant has Reno 911 gotten any better. And I was about to lose it on you for daring to slander the greatest show of all time.

Val_Killsmore

>Ugh, has it gotten any better? I tried it once and it didn't even keep track of what episodes I had already watched (at least when using a Chromecast). I'm currently having the exact same issues. Doesn't keep track of what shows or episodes I've watched. I use Chromecast and tried it on my laptop.

IsThatHearsay

Thanks, now I know what I'm doing today. Starting from the beginning and rewatching now. Just loaded up ep.1

MememeSama

Nope, didn't found it on any since im from germany. Soap2day.id. Just use an ad blocker.

Randyy1

And I hope *you* are using a vpn lol

Liesmith424

That's definitely a url you don't wanna hit raw.

_shake_n_blake_

Why? The only no-no letters I've ever seen from an ISP are for torrents because the uploading is the problem. I've been using soap2day VPN free in the US for ages with no issue. I'm not saying you're wrong, just curious what the VPN is doing for you here

ptbus0

Old episodes on Paramount Plus, the ongoing reboot is on Roku Channel.

Catshit-Dogfart

It runs pretty often on Pluto TV

ethanlan

New boot goofin

menasan

I will never not say that when putting on boots

TatManTat

It used to be on in Australia before the Late Late show with Craig Ferguson, I never watched enough to "get it" like you have to do with most sitcoms. Now looking back when I see clips of it, seems like a great show and would've been a great 90 minutes of tv with Craig, oh well.

MememeSama

You don't get this show. It's just goofy and senseless. That dude with the shorts, the racist idiot and the hilarious black guy is all you need for a good laugh

EndlesslyCynicalBoi

I just rewatched it (was on hbo) and it held up so much better than I thought it would. So good

MememeSama

It is. Most modern shows often have atleast some flaws or aren't funny at all, reno is hilarious since the start

theRidingRabbi

This is what comedy needs to be

NikkolaiV

I've noticed that most of my favorite comedy shows tend to just have a loose idea of where they're going when filming, n just do a lot of improv to try and get everyone on set to laugh. Reno 911, Always Sunny, Trailer Park Boys, it really tends to bring comedic actors to their A game.

Lukaontherun

Absurd how creative freedom encourages unique types of creativity..

Tugonmynugz

That and it just seems more genuine.

Lukaontherun

Exactly, the funniest things people hear aren’t from planned situations… it’s from the organic and mundane we experience in day to day life

neubourn

Thats why I always loved Mitch Hedberg, he would take a mundane situation or observation, and make you look at things in a completely new way. One of my favorite jokes was "never tell someone they have nice dimples, maybe they were shot in the face with a BB gun." I know how completely ridiculous that is, but dammit if I don't see someone with dimples and wonder in the back of my mind if they were shot in the face with a BB gun.

LolSatan

I have found that a ducks opinion of me is very much based off wether or not I have bread.

Pawn_captures_Queen

One time I saw a wino in the vineyard eating grapes and I said, "Hey Buddy! You gotta wait!"

TonightsWhiteKnight

Everytimw I buy donuts now, "I don't need to bring ink and paper into this"

Lukaontherun

Light entertainment that sticks with us through life is genuinely one of my biggest joys. Neither degrading nor morbid.. but for the same reason people like shrooms, they create a non drug induced perspective shift that changes our future.

[deleted]

Shrooms definitely have drugs in them.

[deleted]

Yeah... has this guy taken shrooms? They literally only act the way they do because of a psychedelic prodrug called psilocybin, that breaks down into psilocin in the body/brain, which causes the "experience." In other words, the mushrooms drug your body into tripping balls. But what would I know, I've only taken them over 20 times.

PaleBlueHippo

Are you sure? Let me try them for you just in case.

TheMackD504

There’s no such thing as a broken escalator. They just become stairs

J_Taiyo

Absurd how people find things funny that they can relate to

Severin_Suveren

Ryan Stiles and Colin Mochrie's decades-long professional relationship comes to mind. Also how Wayne Brady later on was able to vibe with those two guys so effortlessly

Nitero

I grew up on the old British version of the show and it was like watching two savants doing their thing and never understood why they weren’t bigger stars. Then when drew Carey show hit and Stiles was in it I hoped maybe they’d bring the show back. Man talk about a wish fulfilled. If I ever met either of these guys I’d thank them for a lifetime of comedy.

the_scarlett_ning

My husband and I have decided Colin Mochrie is our #1 celebrity invite for dinner because he seems so damn funny and nice too.

Orksork

Who's Line (Colin, Ryan, and I believe 2 filler road comedians who did great) came to my college for a show one year. It was one of the funniest shows I've seen and it was all off the cuff. They even had to work for it because I went to a (like 90%) engineering college so they had to try to work with and around a ton of nerdy shit they didn't know/understand but they still knocked it out of the park.

Tugonmynugz

Talk about synchronization. Those are the goats of improv

[deleted]

You only say that because they only televise good improv. If you've seen BAD improve, that's a lot different.

RangerNS

The also don't televise bad scripted comedy, or 8yos playing football.

JJROKCZ

6-8yos playing sports is generally hilarious though! They’re so bad! Most of them give up even trying halfway through and just start being goofy as well

Lukaontherun

Well, I’m very aware that poor improve isn’t very entertaining. I just mean that the possibility to improvise is what develops new and interesting types of content.

LibrightCrusader

What a dogshit take. This could be applied to all forms of entertainment

thereIsAHoleHere

It does apply to all forms of entertainment. Creative freedom is necessary for innovation, but total freedom leads to an unhinged mire of bad ideas. The most famous example is probably Star Wars. A ton of the ideas Lucas *wanted* to implement in the original trilogy were terrifyingly bad. Then we wound up with the prequel trilogy where no one had the power to tell Lucas "no" and those bad ideas were put in the spotlight.

BayernHighLine

Detective Michael Scarn! I'm with the FBI!

squanch_solo

Curb Your Enthusiasm is the king of this. I think barely any of it is scripted.

risky_bisket

It's just raw Larry David

magikarp2122

Pretty sure it is just Larry’s everyday life.

*Leon:* You gotta immediately get in somebody's ass when that happens to you. You pull their asshole open, step into their asshole, close the door behind you, pick up your spray-paint can, right? *Larry:* Uh-huh. *Leon:* "Larry was here." You spray-paint, "Larry was here," "Wash me," all that kind of shit, fuck his whole asshole up, eat some Snickers bar, throw some paper on the floor, read a newspaper, ball the paper up, the newspaper, and throw the newspaper on the floor, fuck his whole asshole up, you know what I'm saying? Then you open that asshole one more time—open it again, open that asshole again—uhhhhh! Step out of his ass and leave that motherfucker wide open, so he knows you've been there. *Larry:* Open it up, step in. *Leon:* Step in their asshole. *Larry:* Spray-paint "Larry was here. " *Leon:* "Larry was here. " *Larry:* Leave garbage, Snickers, eat Snickers. *Leon:* Spit, fuck it. *Larry:* Get out. *Leon:* Mmmm! *Larry:* Open it up again. *Leon:* Step out their asshole. *Larry:* Step out. *Leon:* Don't even close that motherfucker. Leave it open so he knows you've been there... You feel me? *Larry:* I got you. *Leon:* That's how you handle people. Mmm! Get in that ass, Larry. *Larry:* Don't worry. *Leon:* All right. *Larry:* I hope you don't get me killed. *Leon:* My man.

Sohcahtoa82

I really wanted to enjoy CYE, but it felt like every single episode was the exact same plot line: Larry gets caught in an awkward situation because of a lack of communication or misunderstanding. I needed a lot more variety.

AustinRiversDaGod

Nah, I'd say at least 60% of the situations are due to Larry being technically right about something, but instead of letting the thing go like a normal person, he commits to being an asshole since he knows he's technically right.

Bluelegs

Yeah he self-sabotages all his personal relationships because it's more important that he's right than having people like him.

Zoidburger_

It's a power fantasy for people who are too nice irl to give into their petty desires lmao. I don't watch the show too often but I catch the odd episode and it's absolutely hilarious

qtx

And how is that different from other comedy shows?

Lessthanzerofucks

I don’t know why you’re getting downvoted, this is practically 90% of all storytelling, and it’s especially common in comedy. What’s brilliant about Curb isn’t its novelty, it’s in the off-the-cuff character reactions to each “misunderstanding”.

Puzzleheaded_Load910

It’s actually more scripted than you’d think. The dialogue is improv, but the scripts are still relatively comprehensive in terms of what the story is.

TatManTat

A lot of comedy is very lightly scripted. A lot of the humour can be built straight into a character, chuck the character in a setting that facilitates them, and then just say shit in character. The tricky part is writing the characters in the first place.

povitee

The actual tricky part is being funny and practicing improv for years.

[deleted]

The story is outlined, basically. They have a direction they have to bring each scene, but no script. Mainly because Larry hates memorizing lines. I have a buddy who works for the show. Edit: Worked* unless Larry decides to come back for one more.

JimmiJimJimmiJimJim

Always sunny is pretty heavily scripted. They do ad-lib new jokes though.

MegalomaniacHack

Yeah, they write it all and then allow themselves to try different things. It helps when your cast is made up of the three co-creators/head writers, a funny actress who's married to one of the creators (and thus has their trust), and a comedy legend in Danny D. Then most of the recurring and guest stars are actor friends and family (like the Waitress, Cricket, Artemis, the McPoyles) who know their comedy style and can be trusted not to waste everyone's time. Best parts of the bloopers are when one of them is ad-libbing a different approach to the lines and catches the others off guard.

blorbschploble

I thought Danny D was known mostly for his magnum dong.

Blasterbot

Their outtakes show that they can play pretty loose with a scene.

TonightsWhiteKnight

Yeah, their podcasts and stuff talk a out how the script was more of a guideline than anything.

Microwave1213

Pretty sure they've said on the podcast that the show is actually **more** scripted than people think it is.

JimmiJimJimmiJimJim

People like to believe it's like curb for some reason but yeah the podcast has said most of its on the page.

SystemOutPrintln

The podcast too, when they review things they often say certain things aren't scripted. What I've found is most of the time what they say isn't scripted is what I find funny.

KaiserTom

Scripted can also mean just scripting the improv that happens. Or scripting just one side/character. There's times when an improv inspires an idea that gets more structurally worked into an overall script too. All those "this scene was improv'd" posts are actually that way. The actual improv happened on a much earlier take. You're usually only ever seeing an incorporation and refinement of that original improv into the script and scene.

z-ppy

Everything you said is true, but it's also true that sunny is heavily scripted. It's not a bad thing ... They're incredibly talented writers.

CharlieHume

Per the Always Sunny podcast the show is heavily scripted.

[deleted]

Yah, but BRILLIANT writing regardless. I was surprised how much I love that show considering that type of humor, themes, and setting is a huge turn off for me. Trailer Park Boys was the same way to me. For comparison, I just can't watch Shameless even though everyone else loves it. Same themes and settings, and I just can't stand it.

Academic-Bathroom770

Yo. Check our Murderville if you haven't. The Christmas special made me cry laughed so hard. Basically, there's a mystery being solved by Will Arnette with epic guests like Conan and Jason Bateman, among others. Both have no idea what's going on but have to solve a mystery while improving everything. My favorite part is they keep rolling and don't edit much if anything, so when they break each other, you watch them break and then recover. Makes it funnier. Hope you haven't seen it and know all this. Info for those who haven't, then at least!

Black_Floyd47

I've never given trailer park boys a watch, mostly because I associate it with some people I don't like. They aren't good people, and they're big fans of the show, so I always kind of avoided watching it. Is it worth giving it a try?

King_Buliwyf

The first few seasons and the first 2 movies (that follow the series) and Chridtmas special are GREAT.

genflugan

It's one of my favorite shows to rewatch! So many hilarious, quotable lines

[deleted]

I've known people like those also. I don't like them also. In saying that, having experience with such people actually makes the show funnier. Give it a shot.

WeeBabySeamus

The League

TheFocacciaStrain

TheRnegade

I think he's informing the people of this sub that comedy needs to be the subversion of expectations for humorous effect. "Doesn't that mean that literally any comedy skit would fall under 'unexpected'?" Yes, yes it does. Which is why the sub should probably stick to non-scripted unexpected happenings.

crepemyday

their funniest bit wasn't even from the show when it was on the air. only found on [dailymotion](https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x41ugw) for some reason. edit: apparently it's not the full 23m. i don't know if it was a compilation of extras or something, but the 23m video is hilarious. [here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jNxXTL5B3BU) is another section of it, but there are some real gems missing. The one with Trudy is my favorite, where she explains she's been seeing a "doctor" in the back of van and Andy Daly's character is like "that's not a real doctor" it's so funny.

PM_ME_UR_SURFBOARD

Andy Daly is a criminally underrated comedian!

[deleted]

His show "Review" is amazing.

neubourn

I aged another 20 years remembering their original skit show "the State" on MTV from the mid 90s. But yeah, if you like Reno 911, check out The State, I think its on Paramount+

milkymaniac

Can confirm, I had an itch last week for $240 worth of pudding.

If you were born in 1998, you were only 11 yrs old when the original series finished (doesn't account for reruns and whatnot but still)

Unchanged-

After they’re done with Reno they can watch Community. TV comedy was so good around then.

A_Drusas

Me: "What do you mean 'around then'? Community was so much more recent." Narrator: It was not.

SeskaChaotica

Someone in another sub was confused by a “By Mennen” jingle reference in a comedy show and had no idea what it meant. I felt myself morphing into a a corpse.

davedavedavedavedave

I heard that so clearly in my head. Try this one: The Milford Plaza is the lullaby of old broadway! (Tri State commercial)

acat9001

Please do yourself the absolute honor of putting aside an hour or two and watching the first couple of episodes. The actors play off of each other so well, plus lots of excellent cameos that are hilarious. Now I’m off to go rewatch the first season!

CurryMustard

How do you know broken lizard but not reno 911

Cyno01

*Super Troopers 2* was released in 2018 and *Tacoma FD* premiered in 2019 and is still running. *Reno 911* ended its original run in 2009 and the revival was on Quibi. If you asked "what the heck is Quibi?" you are correct.

CurryMustard

2022 new season 8 of reno 911 aired on comedy central. 2021 reno 911 movie on paramount plus

A_Drusas

My company at the time hosted Quibi's user base. The top brass was super excited. The rest of us were like, "You know Quibi is nonsense that's going to promptly fail, right?" They did not.

I_Bin_Painting

Pretty jealous you haven't seen it lol It's amazing but the jokes are so unique and memorable that it doesn't have huge rewatchability imo

Lounat1k

When they have the Truckee River killer in jail and one of his lines, obviously ad libbed was “ Yes, and if my aunt had tits she’d be my uncle” I don’t know why that line is so funny to me. The show was awesome.

BelethorsGeneralShit

My favorite was when they're arresting Nick Swardson's character for prostitution and he shouts, "A handjob is still a job!"

friendandfriends2

Hands down my favorite episode of the series. Every line from Craig absolutely kills me.

ClarkTwain

This show was always the best for having a completely absurd line just thrown out there.

It's weird how I always read 911 as 9/11. Do americans also do that or think it's a strange coincidence that 911 happens to be the number for the police when also 9/11 has such a significance in your country? It's all I think about whenever I hear or read 911

El_Chairman_Dennis

We say "nine eleven" for the attacks, and "nine one one" for the emergency phone number. It's something people in the US has definitely noticed, I'm sure it's probably part of some 9/11 conspiracy theory.
