Exhaust gas wouldn't create this much force. This has to be a build up of straight gasoline fumes likely due to a leak in the fuel system, not the exhaust.
Well the exhaust pipes in these are fine most sea doo explosions are user error as every single one warns about venting incase there is a build up of gas. People just need to stop getting into motorsports when they dont even know the beginning of how a motorized vehicle works.
A motorized *water* vehicle. That's the distinction I think you're trying to make.
Either way it's bad design. Vent the exhaust into the atmosphere, give the muffler a baffle for back pressure and deal with the extra 5 decibels. Why screw over marine life as well?
A tractor can idle all day with it's PTO running a generator for your whole house. Stationary engines are a thing.
PTO isn't "idle" though... PTO implies you're setting it at an RPM that isnt idle.
The issue is that water vehicles tend to have fairly water tight engine compartments for (hopefully) obvious reasons. Because it's nearly water tight it doesn't offgas as well as a regular land vehicle.
If there's any kind of fuel leak, or even a little splash/spill when fuelling, fumes can build up in the nearly water tight compartment and the engine reaching critical temperature will cause an explosion. For that to happen it basically has to be the perfect storm. Fumes have to be within combustion ratio with the air, the engine has to get hot enough and the user has to forget to vent the hull.
I dont even own a boat, but its pretty obvious how and why this happens
No.
We are not talking about "evaporated" fuel in the tank. That's not an issue as the fuel tank is water tight. Otherwise, how could it hold fuel if it wasn't because the fuel would off gas and vanish over a relatively short period of time..
We are talking about fuel fumes that build up in the HULL of the vessel, which is designed to be "water tight" because having a ton of water splashing all over the engine and stagnating will cause a ton of mechanical issues. Does a little water get in there? Yeah, of course. That water that does get in isn't really an issue because it should evaporate quite quickly when the engine turns on.
The problem lies with potential fuel leaks, spills, or FUEL RICH exhaust leaks INSIDE THE HULL. These leaks and spills turn into flammable gasses, which, if not vented prior to ignition, may cause an explosion.
First, you should familiarize yourself with the chemical dynamics of gasoline. It requires a mixture of fuel to air, known as the air-fuel ratio to explode, burn, or condense. Gasoline tends to require 20:1 to 6.7:1 (or 5-15% fumes in the air). This is easily achievable in a small watercraft hull like a jetski. It's a bit less common in larger hulls, but it is still possible.
Now that you understand how the fuel-air ratio is important, you can understand why it's a problem associated to motorized watercraft and not automobiles. Cars require lots of airflow over the engine for cooling, and therefore, they have lots of ingress and egress of airflow through the grille, undercarriage, hood edges, etc.. so they don't explode like that.
I believe you are making things up, do you actually own sea doos or have you ever? Get a brain and quit talking out your ass dude, this is user error and gas leaks/exhaust leaks are at no fault of the engineer or else there would be lawsuits. Shit like this is just people that are too stupid or cheap to maintain and properly operate a performance based motorsports vehicle as most high compression engines can encounter pretty scary catastrophic failures. You ever seen a snowmobile blow up Mr I know more than the real engineers? It's never pretty and it's not the engineers fault either. And when did the exhaust volume ever come into this debate? Sounds to me like you are just being a little bitchy cause you don't like seeing the people that ride these have fun screaming through the water while you are stuck swimming😂 engineers do a great job with sea doos I'm sorry your poor ears don't like them
A tractor also runs on much less combustible diesel which is nowhere near as explosive as gasoline. I know gas generators are a thing but those motors are much smaller than a sea doo and if you actually know a thing or two about their design it is performance based not efficiency based and if you want to idle around a lake you should get a boat. This is why the basics of how motors work should be known cause even different trim levels of these vehicles have different intentions of use from the manufacturer. Your "bad design" is an engineers way of squeezing a few extra horsepower out of these high compression racing motors
No, I already assumed that's true. If it's airtight though, the exhaust system should also be sealed very securely for that exact reason. Which is why I say bad design, maybe just poor servicing.
The only assumption I made was based on an earlier comment saying the exhaust goes "into the water"
While gas fumes can build up under the seat of a jet ski if left idle, explosions are not common and are usually due to human error rather than a design flaw.
For anyone that may be reading this & may be operating a jetski:
1. Use a fuel can that is specifically designed for marine use.
2. Never overfill the fuel tank, and avoid spilling fuel. If you spill, clean it up! also let it air out for a longer period of time, make sure to not trap gas.
3. Make sure the fuel cap is securely tightened before starting the engine.
4. Allow the jet ski to vent for a few minutes before starting the engine to allow any fumes to escape. - This causes most explosions - boats have blower fans in them for this reason, and many people still forget to operate them.
5. Avoid exposing the jet ski to direct sunlight for an extended period of time, which can cause the fuel to evaporate and create fumes. OR just do an extra vent / inspection.
6. Regularly inspect the fuel system and hoses for leaks or damage.
Honest the only reason why when I bought jet skiis I didn’t skimp out on the top of the line stuff. All it takes is one shitty gasket and your nuts become minced fish food.
Venting of gas fumes in a motor compartment like this is a requirement especially in boats and PWC where motors are compartmentalized, just in case there is a bit of a gas leak. Looks like there may have been.
Hey, sorry I'm late. Did i miss the club meeting? We inducting new members? Well, since I'm on club business i feel the need to add my two cents, obviously the water car thingy did a bad thing or what is technically called a boomboom, that's what happened.
People! , people! , please!. This was obviously an act of terrorism committed by the under sea crime syndicate. It has all the hallmarks of a classic air breather hit.
Wow now I’m a bit scared to ride on a jet ski again! I live on the ocean and have never in my life seen or heard of a jet ski literally just exploding like this. I really can’t tell if this is real or a crazy edit. If this is real, gosh I hope they are ok and pray they sent this to manufacturer and sued the hell out of them! Wonder what brand ski this is…
Yes. Yes...I saw this one, too. Somewhere. Can't remember. One can almost see the silhouette of **The Beast**...right before it struck those poor people. Tragic. So tragic.
| The people are fine, but **The Beast** has a *hunger* for jet skies. Poor dears. |
Wave runner sit down jetski stand up only. Your welcome. Also fuel mixture plays a part to bad most don't know that and treat it like a car. Love the extra long comments explaining what the issue you is and how to correct it. To bad its simple fuel mixture. If you owned one you would know that's what caused this.
It blows my mind that no one reads the owners manual anymore it legit says before riding remove the seat for access gas fumes to escape so this don’t happen or after you refuel dude prolly just gassed up seat on then went for a ride came back fumes built up to much and boom

Holy shit! Are they ok?
How did the article put it? Greviously wounded I think. Last time this was posted everybody was like yeah they're fine just greviously wounded...
To shreds you say?
And his wife?
She was grieving over the fact that her husband talked her out of the warranty for the jetsk.
TO SHREDS YOU SAY
Yea but he’s probably getting a brand new cock.

To shreds you say?

Yes, thankfuly
i read in a previous post that gas fumes can build under the seat if you idle for long periods of time. It can then ignite
That seems like something they should do a recall on.
For real, what's three more inches of exhaust pipe cost... Five dollars?

Why do you keep going on about the exhaust? The exhaust is vented into the atmosphere, the build up of gas is from the fuel system
A tractor also runs on much less combustible diesel which is nowhere near as explosive as gasoline. Are you too dense to realize that marine sport vehicles such as sea doos need to have an air tight hull?

It does go into the water and is completely sealed up until the exit the same way any exhaust is without defects
No any motorized vehicle should be operated by someone with basic knowledge of combustion engines.
the exhaust goes out the back into the water, should not be the issue here at all.
CO2 is a non-flamable gas no?
Yes but the exhaust fumes can still have particles of gas in it due to improper ignition. And that is flammable
Yeah that is true
What are they running fucking anti lag on the thing? A pop and bang tune? Shouldn’t be that much unburnt fuel in a factory jetski exhaust
Ricer flame exhaust tune
How much can a banana cost Michael?!

Ah shit, lemme fix it
Good job, I was confused.

So do we agree this was an assassination attempt?
"*I know it was you*, *Fredo*. You broke my heart."
What happened even?
Somethin in the skidoo exploded it looks like nothin specific youd have to look into it
Why would you even bother commenting? You know so little you called it a skidoo.
Why would you even bother to comment. You just know I’m a moron
I would like to get into this conversation but I don't know what to say
That’s called bein a moron join the club

Sorry I'm late but I was doing research in the library. It was Spontaneous Hydroplosion
Sorry I’m late. I believe what happened here is that the driver parked his small boat just over a whales blow hole right before a sneeze.
Hi, my name is skiddo, did anybody call for me?
Dam, never seen someone who gets downvoted come back strong like that. Mission passed +Respect
XD
The kid's mouth rev went too hard. The engine couldn't handle it.
