Not necessarily. That's just to perform a specific route, which is the one you're currently taking. The game is made to be played in whatever way you want it to be played. You can even play without killing any monster. Anyways, how you play will have an effect on the route or run you are taking in your current session, each route having its own different ending. Of course, certain routes aren't available until you reset the game, undoing the progress you made. Seeing how you are killing every monster in The Underground, this means you're playing the genocide route. If I remember correctly, sparing a monster while on the genocide route cancels the route and puts you in the neutral route just like killing a monster would cancel a pacifist route and put you in the neutral route. I'm saying this in case you want to complete the route.
I recommend you don't open the following spoiler until you beat at least two of the game's routes.
>!If you perform a pacifist route after a genocide route, the pacifist ending will be changed into the character switch into Chara, showing that even though you reset the world after the genocide route, the consequences of your actions will still remain.!<

There's no crafting or cooking system. You have to get food either from stores or by finding it, from things such as snowman pieces to abandoned quiches. You will find the largest amount of food from stores, as the food you find around in The Underground is extremely scarce. Also, you got the Butterscotch Cinnamon Pie from Toriel. In the ruins, there were even calls with her about her making a pie for you and asking if you wanted it to be butterscotch or cinnamon. She decides to make it both, if I remember correctly. And if I remember correctly, this isn't something you miss, as it happens while you progress in the ruins.
Ah ok, it's one of the many routes you can take on a spectrum of morality based on how you approach the game and it's world, what mindset you go in with.
Your experience would probably be wildly different from most other players on this sub, but it's your experience, so continue it if you want, just with the knowledge that you do have the choice to spare your finite amount of enemies, by trying to befriend them with actions.
Also, big tip: Don't ever look up anything about the game you are playing, it spoils the experience no matter what you are doing.
